Welcome October! Another month gone by. Fall is here and
winter will be soon upon us as these months are going by
fast.
I hope the small gift bags that were given to our elders here
in West Segment were enjoyed. It was a small gesture to
show our appreciation to each of our elders here in our
community. If you didn’t get a gift bag please see Loretta and
she will make sure you get one.
As you can see on the front page of this month’s paper, we
recently had speed bumps installed on Ridge Road. Which
will help with drivers slow down on this roadway, since we
have children and elders who live on this street. You can see
more pictures of the TAT transportation on page 4.

Believe In The Love of God
To believe in the Love of God we
have to have an open mind and
heart to receive Gods love and
be open to the fact that we are
his creation.
He loves his

Smithsonian Magazine Selects Tessa Holds The

We must come to believe that he
is in charge, he is always near
and close to us. So many times, I
have gone off track thinking I’m
in charge or all alone in my thinking and in my actions.
Yet God is always there with a loving and forgiving
heart ready to lift me up with his loving presence.
I have to remember there is one that would want to
ruin that love for us and that is the evil one. He would
want me to be caught up in self-doubt, selfishness, and
self-centeredness. It is so easy to get caught up in
things that take me from the loving presence of God. I
have to remember that “God is Love” (1 Jn 4:8).
“Love” the key word: “Love is patient, love is kind, it
does not envy, it does not boast it is not proud. It does
not dishonor others. It is not self-seeking it is not
easily angered; it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does
not delight in Evil but rejoices with the truth, love
always protects, always hopes, love always
perseveres” (1 Corinthians 13:4-7) because God is
Love.

Every Day, Every Class, Present and
On Time!
Submitted by Mrs.,. Bluestone
Daily School Attendance Critical To Success
Regular school attendance is a challenge every year. The
challenge is even greater as we battle through the pandemic.
A day out of school is a day out of school regardless of the
reason. When a student is not present in school an “Absent” is
recorded. The State and Federal reporting the District is
required to do does not differentiate between an “excused” or
“unexcused” absence. It is reported as a day absent. That is
reason that language was removed from the Student
Handbook.
In order to meet the 95% Average Daily Attendance Rate a
student can miss no more than eight (8) days per school year.
That is about two (2) days per quarter. That is definitely a
challenge during these COVID times.
The District will assist every student to meet this goal. When
absences occur the District will reach out and provide
families the support needed to make up the days missed.
Days absent need to be made up as soon as possible so there
is no lingering consequences such as non-crediting a class.
It is in your child’s best interest to get absences made up as
soon as possible.
There will be a three (3) week window at the end of each
quarter to focus a strong effort to get the days made up from
previous quarter.
This is so that it will present a reasonable and doable goal.
Waiting until March or April to worry about absences creates
undue stress on families and teachers.
Things To Do
1. Attend school every day unless you are sick.
2. Make up missed days as soon as possible.
3. Be kind to those around you.

Obituary
Arnold Good Bird Sr., “Walks Along Side of the Hill”, 77 made his journey from this earthly world on September 26, 2021 in
Poplar, Montana surrounded by his loving family. He was born on July 18, 1944 in Elbowoods, ND to Benjamin and Helen
(Blackhawk) Good Bird. He was a member of the Knife Clan and child of the Waterbuster Clan and a member of the MHA
Nation.
Arnold or “Arnie” as many knew him by, was born and raised in the Elbowoods area of the Fort Berthold Reservation until
the flooding of their homelands at which time they relocated to Mandaree, ND. He attended Mandaree Public School and
graduated there in 1963. He participated in basketball. He enjoyed horseback riding and the outdoors in his younger years.
Arnie married Eleanor (Walking Hawk) Good Bird and seven children were born to this union; Denise, Byron, Arn, Twyla,
Felicia, Calvin and Kristal. They made their home in New Town, ND and then in April 2012 they lost their son Byron.
Arnie enjoyed firefighting, where he served as crew boss. He also worked for the BIA for thirty-five years before retiring.
He later moved to Poplar, Montana where he lived with his companion Ida, until his time of his passing, but he was always
making trips back home to New Town to see family.
Arnie enjoyed hunting with his brothers and nephews in the Mandaree area. He also would be loading all the kids up to go
fishing or hiking with dad, uncle and grandpa. He was at all the gatherings teasing and joking with everyone. Everyone
was “Jack” if he knew you, you had a nickname. Just to name a few, you know who you are; Wieners, Yellow Socks, Wood
tick, Tweeter, Hound dog man, Sneeze, etc. His laugh was one of a kind and unforgettable. Soon as you heard his laugh,
you knew he was nearby.
Arnie treasured his Montana and North Dakota families and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Also we
all know his dog Tuffy was waiting at the rainbow bridge for him. His heart was broke when his dog passed away, now they
are reunited .
Arnie is survived by his children; Denise Good Bird, Twyla Good Bird, Felicia Good Bird, Calvin Good Bird, Arnold Good Bird
Jr., and Kristal Good Bird, all of New Town, ND. Sister; Marva Doris Spotted Bird-Brockton, Montana and Ina Mae DriverFour Bears, ND, Brother– Leonard Good Bird-Rapid City, South Dakota. His companion-Ida Cantrell-Poplar, Montana. His
many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom he loved dearly.

Obituary
Monica was born on April 19, 1951, in Elbowoods, ND to Olivia Two Crow and George Fox Jr. She attended Mandaree
School, then transferred to St. Joseph Indian School in Chamberlain, SD. She graduated from Marty High School in Marty,
South Dakota. She then went on to Beauty College in Jamestown, ND. Monica was a hard worker, she worked at the New
Town High School for nine years, then later worked at the Aging Services for six years. Monica had a passion for making
star quilts and sewing. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, family and friends. Her home away from home
was the Four Bears Casino where she was always with her sister, Zandra Fox, trying to win the big bucks. Monica and
Sandy, also known as the Little grandmas were inseparable, if you saw one of them the other was not far behind.
Their humor was unfiltered and hilarious to say the least. If you were in the room with them, you would certainly leave
with a belly ache from laughter. They had the ability to make light of even the hardest situation. They were honestly one
another’s better half.
Monica enjoyed watching old Western like Gunsmoke, Bonanza and the Rifleman. She loved to dance to Motown and
Western music. Her sense of humor always left everyone with a smile and the stories she told were unforgettable and
heartwarming. She always left a positive mark on everyone that crossed her path and helped others when it was needed.
Monica had a special place in her heart for her grandson David, their bond was an unspoken love but showed in many
ways, they always took care of each other. She was always there when David needed anything. He can recall to when she
would tuck him in snug, reassuring him he was safe, and he was loved. She loved feeding him his favorite egg sandwich and
ice tea. She was always his biggest fan, his defender, and his confident.
Monica had a unique way of caring for each one of her grandchildren with her warm love and silly nature. Little grandma
never missed a special occasion, birthday or holiday for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She took special care
of her youngest granddaughter Heaven Grace, she was grandma’s little boss and kept her on her toes.
Monica will always be remembered as a loving and caring mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and friend to all. She will be
greatly missed by all who knew her and loved her. Monica Kaye Fox (Good Medicine “Xubaari Caagic) 70, of New Town,
passed away on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at St. Alexis Hospital in Bismarck, North Dakota.
