Christmas Party

What a great turn out for the community Christmas party! It been a long while since

the hall has been this full. Community members and their children, grandchildren,

friends and family, you name it they were all here to enjoyed a great meal. Along with

gift giving and candy bags, photos with Santa and much more! West Segment Events

sure out did themselves organizing Christmas! All of the West Segment employees

were awesome elves in working hard in preparing for this event. All their hard work

was worth it to see the people happy who came to enjoy themselves and have fun!

Councilwoman Turner-Lone Fight Update

Thank you all for coming to our community

Christmas party, what a busy day full of

friends and family. The planning and

cooperation of everyone involved in these

events is always important. Thanks to the

school for having the winter concert a little

earlier. I would like to say thank you A&P for

catering our dinner from Bones BBQ. Thank

you to Brunton Architects for donating some

of our door prizes. Also thanks to enerplus for

always bringing some community gifts every

year. You are all part of our community and

we would like to say we appreciate you and your participation in these

events. My staff has been working hard to ensure we all have a great

time. Walking Shield donates gifts every year to the community but

their shipment was delayed so we will be distributing gifts when they

arrive next week to make sure everyone receives a gift. My elves have

been running the sleighs back and forth to the North Pole and have

spent $45,000 for gifts and more door prizes. We also are giving away

$18,350 in prize money. Thank you for all the commitment you show to

us all.

This is what happened with our generators for instance.

As you might have noticed we have a new addition to our daycare.

This house is for toddler us so they have space to more around and

the existing one will be for the babies so they aren’t disturbed.

I am so excited for all the new developments that Mandaree is getting

and making plans for even more great things to come. Maybe a

hotel??

Again, I want to thank you the community members for joining us for

our West Segment Christmas party. I would like to also inform you

that those who read our West Segment News the editor won’t be here

during the month of January. So no January issue we are sorry for the

inconvenience.

For the new upcoming year of 2024, I would like to wish everyone a

safe, healthier and prosperous New Year! We can all look forward to

all the construction and positive changes we have going on in West

Segment. At the bottom there is an announcement from the West

Segment Transportation Department that our community members

need to know about. Thank you.

Thank you for being a good reader

I am happy to announce an upcoming project I have been working on

and is approved under West Segment Housing will be purchasing ten Go wits

homes for delivery this summer and will be ordering an additional ten West Segment Representative Gladys Sherry Turner-Lone Fight

for fall delivery. Please contact Shanna Fox for applications. These

houses are targeted towards the young families and young adults who

need a place of their own. In order to get these homes and new

developments I had to look closely at our infrastructure and what we

needed to help Mandaree grow. First, we needed water, working with

Joe Silveria and Dallas Osborne we were able to get a grant for 25

million to build a new water depot and water holding tank. Second, we

needed electrical grid upgrades so negotiating with the oil companies

that are in our community who will pay for the expense, we will be

getting 3 new power plants to increase the electrical load throughout

Mandaree. We are also monitoring our lagoons to make sure we are

not over capacity.

Our wellness campus is on track for completion in early 2025! These

projects have taken years of planning. I would like to thank Brunton and

A&P for doing an amazing job on our projects. Total cost to build the

wellness campus is estimated at $183 million, this includes the sitework

and infrastructures that is needed to create any new project.

The race track will be started this spring with dirt work possibly starting

this month if this beautiful winter stays this way. Lloyd Vigen

spearheaded this project.

I have tried to help all of our community members with their needs from

electrical, heating and plumbing. It is hard to get trustable companies to

come out to Mandaree. When they do, we end up having to get

contracts and payment requirements that take some times months to

complete before they can get paid. So we either lose their services or

we have to wait until the contracts are signed and payment is issued.

Everyone was in the Christmas spirit, some were dressed as elves while

others had their Christmas sweaters on. The parade of lights was a

grand success with many community members who participated in the

parade. We had community members who parked and watched the

beautiful floats drive through out the West Segment community. It was

an evening full of Christmas cheer! Pictured below was an ATV from the

For Your Information

Watch!

What are you watching? We all

watch something: we watch the

weather, we watch sports, we

watch movies, we watch the

news. We watch our health, we

watch our income, we watch our

home, we watch our family. Most

of the things we watch influence

our lives in some way or another.

If we were to rate the things we

watch from the most important

to the least important, which one

would be at the top of the list? I

would think most of us would

tend to list the things associated with family and loved ones at

the top.

Jesus also has an opinion on what we are watching.

Every year the Advent season always starts with a scripture

passage where Jesus talks about the “coming” of the “Son of

Man” (Mt 24:37, Mk 13:35, Lk 21:27) and uses words like

“Stay awake!” (Mt 24:42), “Watch” (Mk 13:37), and “Be

Vigilant” (Lk 21:36). With these words he advises us to move

from watching worldly things to watching spiritual things.

Jesus tells us that life in the world will come to an end

someday but life in the spirit will never end.

In the Gospel of Luke Jesus describes vividly some of the

ominous things to watch for that will precede His coming. For

some who really watch for these ominous signs, they believe

we are currently witnessing these events unfold. Jesus, by

describing these events that are to happen prior to his

“coming,” is not telling us these things to frighten us, He is

preparing us so we will not be frightened. “Beware,” he says,

“that your hearts do not become drowsy from … the anxieties

of daily life, and that day catch you by surprise like a trap” (Lk

21:34-35a). In other words, we are not to spend all our energy

and time “watching” those worldly things in our lives, but we

are to spend a lot of our energy and time on why he is

“coming,” that is, for our redemption: “when these signs begin

to happen,” says Jesus, “stand erect and raise your heads

because your redemption is at hand” (Lk 21:28).

The “redemption” of our families and ourselves must be

our priority. To “watch” what our children are being taught in

school and to steer them away from things that are not of God

towards things that are of God is preparing them to receive

“redemption.” To “watch” how much time we spend on

worldly things such as sports, social media, entertainment

versus spiritual things such as attending Mass, listening to

spiritual podcasts, studying scripture is preparing us to

receive “redemption.” Our hearts are made for

“redemption,” made for life eternally in heaven with God

the Father, Jesus His only begotten Son, and the Holy

Spirit. This will be the only place where we will be fully

satisfied – where there will “be no more death or

mourning, wailing or pain,” where “the one who sat on

the throne said, ‘Behold, I make all things new’” (Rev

21:4-5).

The influence in our lives to “watch” for the

“coming” of the “Son of Man,” just as we “watch” for what

is best for our families, has eternal consequences. Should

we be, or not be living in the times just prior to the

“coming” of the “Son of Man,” our watchfulness on

spiritual things will replace fear with hope. This year, let

us use the Advent season to examine our list of what we

are watching so we may replace fear with Christmas

hope.

May God Bless you always, Merry Christmas & Happy

New Year

Have a great day with Jesus Christ

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:

Hello to all Good People of MHA;

Respiratory Viral Season is Here! Please take proper precautions to care for yourself and your family.

COVID & Flu are all “VIRUSES”, and are commonly spread from person to person through contact of airborne droplets.

The best way to protect yourself against a virus is by vaccination. A vaccination will help the body learn how to fight off viruses and avoid

contracting more severe symptoms. Please be advised, the vaccination will not completely prevent a virus, but if you do become symptomatic

your illness will be milder.

All clinics have COVID Vaccinations available for distribution to the public. You can call your clinic and schedule an appointment.

If you test positive at home please remain home. This way you are not exposing other people who could be compromised or our elders.

If you need a confirmation letter for work or school, you need to call the front desk security at (701) 627-7652 and schedule a test.

After they test you, please let them know who your primary care provider is or walk in provider at the clinic and they will notify the nurse for

medication if needed. Please remember medication is only effective within (5) five days of your first symptoms.

AGAIN: Your best protection against a virus is the vaccination.

As always you should be following these precautions:

1. wear well-fitted masks

2. Avoid large crowds

3. Use good hand washing techniques

4. Use hand sanitizer often. Always carry a portable hand sanitizer with you.

MHA Nation Emergency Information

REPORTING POWER OUTAGES:

Please do not report outages through your electric cooperatives Email or Social Media pages as they are not monitored 24/7, and it may delay

response time.

IF YOUR POWER GOES OUT FOLLOW THESE INITIAL STEPS FIRST:

1. When your electricity goes off, check for blown fuses and tripped circuit breakers at the meter pole and service panel. Call neighbors to see

if they have power.

2. Call your rural electric cooperative. Report the outage as soon as possible to the representative answering your phone call or follow the

automated answering service prompt given. This helps their line crews find the issue and restore power more quickly. When reporting a

power outage, be sure to have your account number ready as you’ll need it to report your outage. You can find your account number on any

of your bills or within your account login through your electric cooperative website.

3. After you have reported the power outage, and are waiting for service to be restored, turn off or unplug appliances. This will help avoid

possible damage when power is restored.

4. Do not wire an emergency generator into your home electrical system. Back feed into power lines could injure or kill a lineman working to

restore electricity. Use your generator only to run specific appliances and locate your generator outside to keep poisonous carbon monoxide

fumes out of your home

5. Use a cell phone or plug a telephone that has a cord into a phone jack, so you have phone service. (Cordless phone don’t work during

power outage.)

6. Get updates on timeframes or power restoration from your electric cooperatives power outage map from their website or mobile app. Most

electric cooperatives will also have a toll free number to call and/or will update their social media pages with updates. Leave one light or

radio on to let you know when you have service again.

7. Stay warm, dress in layers. Check on your neighbors and Elders. Most power outages are restored quickly, but if the power outage is

expected to be a few hours or more and in colder temperatures, it is recommended to go to a family member or friend’s house or nearby

business/public facility that does have power and wait to go to a local warming shelter.

8. Be sure you understand service disconnection and restoration as they relate to natural disasters or identified hazards. You can find more

Power Outage Emergency Preparedness information through your local Emergency Management.

9. If you’re experiencing an emergency, call 911 immediately.

10. On page 27 of the West Segment News are warming shelters for your local areas.

MHA Education Grant Program

The MHA Education Grant Program is now accepting Spring

2024 applications. I want to remind everyone we have

transitioned to an online application, and have been

overwhelmed with the impact it has made. In the Spring

2023 term, we processed 567 applications. After launching

the online application in July of 2023, we

processed 840 applications for the Fall 2023 term. In other

words, our applicant pool is up 110%, which I believe is due

in part to the online application process. This means MHA is

busy getting educated! What a wonderful thing! Please

share with your offices and loved ones. This flyer is on the

Sage Coulee Facebook as well, if you wouldn't mind sharing

it there to help us reach more members, we would

appreciate it.
