Greetings relatives,

I hope this message finds you safe

and sound. We continue to find

ourselves at the mercy of several

severe weather events and as a

result, another State of Emergency

was declared on April 26, 2024.

The Emergency Declaration was

included in the previous newsletter

along with contact information

and a form to be completed by any

members (nationwide) that were

impacted. If you were impacted

by the recent storms or know of

someone that was, please reach

out to the Tribe via your local office

so that we can document all the

immediate needs across Ponca

nation and assist where we can.

Please be sure to follow our official

Cemetery Cleanup provides opportunity for honoring ancestors

On Saturday, May 18,

members of the community partnered with staff

from the Ponca Tribe

Culture Department for

the annual Ponca Cemetery Cleanup in Niobrara,

NE. This gathering allowed family and friends

to share stories of their

loved ones who have

During this event, participants came together

to clean up grave sites

by pulling weeds, mowing the grass and picking up trash. Various

offerings were set on the

graves such as socks,

handkerchiefs, tobacco,

and flags for Veterans,

and new flowers. These

items served as gifts to

the ancestors to show the

love and honor bestowed

upon them.

Following the cleanup, the

Elders Committee provided a meal in the Community Building, cooked by

Do you have a medical billing concern?

In the event that Ponca Health Services cannot provide the needed specialty care, the PRC program may

be available to pay for care administered by private or external healthcare providers. The PRC Program is

considered the payer of last resort and Federal Regulations require patients to exhaust all health care resources

available to them from private insurance, state health programs (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid) before the PRC

program can provide payment. There are several requirements before a patient can be authorized for the

program. Please call 402-371-8834 for more information about the PRC program.

Questions to ask yourself when you are referred

to an outside doctor:

1. Did your Ponca Health Service provider submit a PRC referral?

2. Did you consult with the PRC Department about your referral?

3. Did you inform the outside doctor’s office that you are PRC eligible?

4. Did you provide your insurance card to the doctor’s office

during your visit?

Steps to take when you receive a medical bill in the mail:

1. Call the phone number that is located on your patient bill:

• Inform the office that you received a bill in the mail.

• Provide account number and any other information they request.

• Inquire if they have your insurance information, if not provide it.

• Inform them that you are Ponca Health Service PRC eligible.

Facts to know about PRC Funds:

1. PRC receives yearly funding. It is used

from October 1st to September 30th.

2. All PRC patient referrals must be approved,

otherwise PRC funding will not be applied

to your patient bill.

3. PRC patients must apply for any alternate

resources for which you may be eligible

(Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance etc.)

4. PRC funding is a Payer of last resort. It

pays only for costs not paid for by your

alternate resources.

2. Submit your bill to the Ponca Health Service PRC Department:

• PRC does not always know that you have an unpaid medical bill.

• Please contact a PRC Staff member to discuss your bill.

• Please submit your most current updated insurance card,

so our system can be updated accordingly.

Member's Corner

Baker grateful for welcome and experiences in Lincoln

Megan Baker

I recently had the honor

of participating in the

UNL April Powwow as

one of the 2024 graduates. I have attended

Powwows but this was

my first time participating in one, and it deeply

impacted my sense of self

and created a lifelong

memory. Claude Iron

Thunder danced for me

at my request, and I am

incredibly grateful for his

presence. I met him at

the Lincoln office during my internship for the

Environmental Program.

Since I am originally from

California, the ample support and genuine interest

in my future plans from

the people I have met

since moving here means

so much to me. I took a

risk traveling so far to be

closer to the tribe, and

looking back on my time

in Lincoln I can confi-

dently say it has paid off.

I want to thank everyone

I have met along this

journey who has made me

feel welcome during this

complex time in my life.

Integrating into the community here has changed

me for the better and

molded my future plans

in ways I’d have never

expected. Considering my

positive experience attending UNL and working for the tribe, I also

want to encourage other

tribal youth to follow in

my footsteps. Our unique

background is becoming

more and more valued

in academia, which can

make higher education

both possible and worth

it through tuition assistance and scholarships.

The powwow was hosted

by the University of

Nebraska Inter-Tribal

Exchange club (UNITE).

I highly recommend any

Native American students

to join no matter their

year in school or level of

connection to their family

history.
