Youth Council

Reel Mentors help get Ponca youth hooked on fishing

Becci Sullivan

Youth Council Advisor

On Sunday, June 2, 2024, the

Osni Ponka Youth Council collaborated with the Reel Mentor's

program for their annual event for

D2 youth. The event occurred at

the Platte River State Park in Louisville, NE. The participants and

their families started with donuts

and juice. The first activity for the

youth participants was to use metal

detectors to find coins that the

Reel Mentors had thrown all over

a grassy area. And, the kids got to

keep all the coins that they found!

The Reel Mentors then showed the

kids how to cast and they practiced

trying to get their bobbers in hula

hoops. The group then headed inside to learn fishing safety and knot

tying. Everyone then headed to the

agdíwį

creek for some FISHING! Every

kid caught at least one fish! For

some, it was their first catch! After

fishing, everyone came back to

the lodge for lunch. The kids then

met with a park naturalist for the

Crawdad Creek Expedition where

they found critters and creatures in

the creek. And, we finished the day

with a tour of the Park's Nature

Center.

Special thanks to tribal member,

Ronnie Suverkrubbe and his Reel

Mentor's team for collaborating on

this event every year. And, special

thanks to Candy Schott for assisting with the event and to youth

council members, Maci Schott and

Ben Schott, for helping make the

day a success.

Environmental

What is radon, and what to do about it?

The Environmental Protection Department at the

Ponca Tribe of Nebraska

is offering free radon

testing for tribal members

and employees within

the tribal service delivery

area. Please contact us

at cbarta@poncatribe-ne.

gov or by calling or texting 402-358-6290 to set

up a radon appointment

today!

What is radon? Radon

is a naturally occurring,

odorless gas that is constantly being released

from the ground. It

comes from the radioactive decay of underground uranium. It can

build up in lower levels

of homes due to pressure differences between

indoors and outdoors.

Is radon dangerous?

are higher than the EPA

action level, which indicates that actions should

be made to minimize the

high levels. The only way

to know if your home has

high levels of radon is to

test for it!

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer,

behind smoking. When

we breathe radon gas into

our lungs it has the potential to release alpha radiation while in the lungs.

The main concern is that

after years of exposure

to high levels of radon

there is an increased risk

of developing lung cancer,

especially in combination

with smoking.

Does Nebraska have

radon? Nebraska has the

3rd highest average radon

levels of all the states,

with Minnesota and Iowa

being the only states with

higher levels. 59% of

Nebraskan homes tested

What can I do about high

radon levels? Depending

on levels and the source

of the radon entering the

home, there may be a

few easy fixes to change

the pressure differences

between the lower level of

the home and the outside

ground. Sometimes this

involves installing a fan in

the basement and running

a pipe from the basement

to the outside air. In

other situations, simple

changes in ventilation or

air conditioning can fix

the problem.

Adopt a buffalo today!

You can help our buffalo to prosper by adopting one or more members

of our herd. Our Adopt-A-Buffalo program is open to both Tribal

members and Non-Tribal friends. You will receive a photo of your

buffalo along with an official adoption certificate.

Just choose from the three categories of yearly

support listed below:

$25 for the Yearling Group

$50 for the Buffalo Herd Group

$100 for the Head Herd Bull Group

LAW AND ORDER CODE REVISION

Discussion on August 6, 2024 at 4:00 p.m.

During Tribal Council Meeting

**** NOTICE: All Tribal Members****

The Ponca Tribal Council will be reviewing proposed amendments to the Law and Order Code.

The revisions are being considered because the Tribal Council wants to increase the autonomy

of the Tax Commission by changing the composition of the Commission and granting the

Commission the authority to determine whether or not a Commissioner should participate in an

action due to a potential conflict of interest.

There are changes being proposed to Title XII. The revisions being considered include but are

not limited to the following:

•

•

•

•

Section 12-2-2 Changes the composition of the Commission by removing the Vice-Chair

of the Tribal Council and increases the number of Tribal members who serve

Section 12-2-3 Changes the qualification of the Commission

Section 12-2-8 Requires the Commission to elect a Chairperson and Secretary at its first

meeting each calendar year or earlier if a vacancy occurs, and prohibits Chairperson

from voting unless there is a tie

Section 12-2-10 Gives the Commission the authority to determine by majority vote

whether a Commissioner is able to participate in an action due to a potential conflict of

interest.

A complete copy of the proposed amendments is available at the tribal offices, or one may be

obtained by contacting Jan Colwell, Executive Assistant to Tribal Council at 402-857-3391 Ext.

5016 or janc@poncatribe-ne.gov.

There will be a discussion by Tribal Council that is open for public comment on August 6, 2024

at 4:00 p.m. or as soon thereafter as it may be heard.

Written comments will be accepted until July 31, 2024 at 10 a.m. The written comments may

be emailed to janc@poncatribe-ne.gov or mailed to

Jan Colwell,

P.O. Box 288

Niobrara, NE 68760
