NEWS FROM THE CONFEDERATED TRIBES OF COOS, LOWER UMPQUA & SIUSLAW INDIANS

Three Rivers Health Center

Grand Opening Celebration a Resounding Success

CTCLUSI Tribal Council and Three Rivers Health Center staff and partners begin to cheer in the moment the ribbon is officially cut at the Grand Opening

Celebration on Saturday, June 1, 2024.

Coos Bay, OR, June 14, 2024 - The Confederated Tribes of

Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians (CTCLUSI) celebrated

the grand opening of Three Rivers Health Center with a vibrant

community event on Saturday, June 1, 2024. The occasion marked

a significant milestone for the community, with over 300 attendees

joining in the festivities. View the Grand Opening Recap video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2oswwIFqjg.

The celebration commenced with a festival of booths hosted by

various CTCLUSI departments including Administration, Tribal

Council, Community Health, Emergency Management, Tribal

Court, Housing, Education, and Social Services. Three Rivers

Health Center staff showcased Medical, Behavioral, Pharmacy, and

Dental services and enrolled over 160 new patients, underscoring

the community’s enthusiasm and support for the new health center.

The opening ceremony began with a warm welcome from

CTCLUSI Chief Doug Barrett, followed by Council Chair Brad

Kneaper, CEO Lee Ann Wander, and Health Administrator John

R Reeves III, each sharing their vision and appreciation for Three

Rivers Health Center.

Highlighting the significance of the health center for the

community, CEO Lee Ann Wander stated, “This is a lot more

than just a health clinic; this was a promise we made to the Tribal

membership when I came in. To lead with a good heart; to listen to

the tribal membership and what their needs were. Healthcare was

at the top of the list and this is a promise fulfilled.”

Attendees were treated to a traditional prayer, followed by singing

and drumming by Jesse Beers, Chief Doug Barrett, and other

Tribal members, creating a powerful and emotional atmosphere.

Christina Garcia, CEO of MGMT 88, who manages the pharmacy,

remarked, “The prayer and songs were very sacred. That meant

so much to me. As a leader of my own company, it gave me a

different inspiration.”

After the ceremony, attendees moved to the building entrance,

designed to resemble a traditional plank house, for a formal ribboncutting led by the CTCLUSI Tribal Council, symbolizing the official

opening of the brand new facility.

In addition to the festival, ceremony, and ribbon cutting, attendees

enjoyed delicious Indian fry bread and entered the health center

lobby to view the Three Rivers Health Center Grand Opening

The Curation and Cultural Programs are reaching out to all Tribal Families to

seek artisans to create cultural works of art, including bead work and jewelry,

weaving, cedar works, painting, wood working and carving or historic family

photographs. Your contributions will be featured in various displays in many

Government properties, such as Three Rivers Health Center, CTCLUSI’s True

History Gallery Lag̣auwiiyat’as, and the Administration Offices located in Coos

Bay, Florence and Eugene.

The focus of these displays has multiple purposes. The Tribe wants to feature

the contemporary culture of our Tribe, as well as illuminate and celebrate the

skills of our Tribal members. Visitors, including Tribal families, staff and

members of our communities will be able to view the art and rich cultural

displays and hopefully learn and appreciate CTCLUSI origins, history, and

continued artistry.

Interested artists should submit their project ideas to Tribal Historic

Preservation Office, thpo@ctclusi.org, and a workgroup of cultural knowledge

holders will evaluate project ideas based on various factors and display needs.

All selected artists will be offered fair and consistent compensation for their

submissions. Donations or loans of pieces of work will also be accepted with

agreements available.

Your submission of artistic work or photographs will be displayed with

acknowledgements of you and any other relevant information.

Know the facts. Complex, interrelated

have experienced trauma from wars, loss

of land, genocide, and forced removal from

Ask and listen. Be an active part of your

Vaccines

Vaccines protect us from diseases like the flu and measles. Each vaccine goes through several rounds of testing, which takes

years and thousands of volunteers. During vaccine testing, important questions are considered, like “Is the vaccine safe?” and

“How does the body react to it?”

Once a vaccine is approved, everyday people who got the vaccine share how it made them feel. This is an important part of

making sure that vaccines are safe for everyone.

How vaccines work

Within our bodies, each of us has warrior cells

that stand guard and attack diseases. Vaccines

help our warrior cells see and fight disease.

For example, when we get the flu shot, the

ingredients in the shot tell our warrior cells how

to recognize and fight the flu. That is why if you

get a flu shot, you are less likely to get sick with

the flu. Getting vaccinated can also reduce the

seriousness of illness if you happen to get sick.

and Native people have helped at

every step in fighting against diseases through

doing things like participating in vaccine

trials. At Lummi Nation we participated in the

Novavax vaccine trials. We are proud to have

Side effects

You may experience side effects from vaccines, like fever or soreness. Most side effects are mild and go away within a few

days. Mild side effects are a good sign that your warrior cells are preparing to be able to recognize and fight disease.

is so much misinformation out

“ There

there. I would urge our relatives to arm

themselves with updated knowledge

about vaccines, their safety, and their

effectiveness.

”

– Dr. Jeffrey Henderson, MD, MPH, Lakota & Cheyenne River Sioux

Tribe, President and CEO of the Black Hills Center for American

Indian Health

Sometimes people make the mistake of thinking that

having mild vaccine side effects means that they

are “getting sick with the disease.” This is not true.

Vaccines do not make you sick with the disease you

are getting vaccinated against.

Protecting our future

Acting in ways that honor our past, present, and

Where to get vaccinated

To get vaccinated contact your local Tribal clinic, IHS facility, or visit a local pharmacy or clinic.

Elders Corner

Elders Trip Summer Kickoff!

Contributed by Kimmy Bixby, CHR and Jodi Beesley, Elders Coordinator/CHR

June 12th was officially our first “Elders

Overnight Trip” for the Summer of 2024.

Joining us was our Elders Coordinator CHR, Jodi Beesley!

With the bus leaving from Coos Bay,

and the vans loaded and taking off from

Eugene and Florence, we hit the open road.

Destination; Seven Feathers Casino Resort

in Canyonville. Lots of fun conversations

and playful banter took place along the

way. The group on the bus and vans met

up with Elders that drove down themselves

for a quick reunion as hotel room keys were

passed out. With new maps and agendas in

hand, everyone was able to find their rooms,

and freshen up before heading across to the

Casino for the evening’s festivities.

The Dogwood Room had been reserved

for the gathering. The Cow Creek catering

staff did a phenomenal job of preparing our

food. We were welcomed into a spacious

room filled with beautifully set tables, not

too close together. A coffee, iced tea, and

lemonade bar was waiting to quench our

thirst. The evenings blessing was given by

a Cow Creek Elder, followed by the giving of

necklaces to the CTCLUSI Elders. Dinner

was a feast for the eye and the belly. The

salad was crunchy, the asparagus was

highlighted by a cream sauce, the baby

potatoes filled out the colors of the rainbow,

and the chicken shared the main stage with

the most amazing salmon. The quality of the

food and the quick service of the staff made

it seem effortless.

A bountiful table covered with several

different cheesecake delights dazed and

distracted the room as is was transformed

for BINGO fun. Cow Creek really knows

how to do it. Bingo sheets and dabbers

were dispersed, the microphone tested and

the big screen turned on. Some epic rounds

of BINGO followed.

“Bingo!” after “Bingo!”, beautiful prizes

were given out to our CTCLUSI and Cow

Creek Elders. Our very last game was a

blackout, with the prize being a beautiful

garden gazing ball, won by one of our

CTCLUSI Elders.

The evening offered still more options.

Join Jodi for a ride by bus back to the rooms,

go for a soak in the hot tub, or try your luck

on the gaming floor. Oh, what a night.

The morning on Thursday, June 13 started

out just right with breakfast at the Cow

Creek Restaurant. We enjoyed our last bit of

each other’s company visiting, and seeing

who the big winners were before saying our

goodbyes and departing for home.

Thank you to the Cow Creek and Seven

Feathers Staff for working with us and

creating this memorable event. It was lovely!

Thank you Elders, for your participation.

Looking forward to what’s next!

THE VOICE OF CLUSI

July 2024

Bee Friendly, Bee Safe

Contributed by Leslie Thompson, Housing Assistant

Oregon is home to an astounding variety of bees, more than 600

species from 55 genera in 6 taxonomic families are known to occur

here. Bees are essential to our ecosystem, but sometimes they

can create big problems. Here are some solutions to deal with

those buzzing bees during your summertime fun.

1. Make a Mixture

Take a banana peel, cut it into thin strips then insert the strips

into an empty 2-liter bottle. Combine 1 cup of sugar with 1 cup of

vinegar, stir, then pour the mixture into the bottle. Fill the bottle up

with water that lands at 2 inches below the neck. Tie a piece of

string around the neck and hang it from a nearby tree branch.

2. Mothballs

This is another effective repellent for bees. Cut the feet off of a few

pairs of pantyhose and fill them with mothballs. Tie the pantyhose

off and hang them around your picnic area. The pungent odor will

discourage bees and also keep other insects away.

3. Keep Food Separate

Set up the food table away from where everyone will be gathered.

4. Keep Food Covered and Sealed

Keep your food items in closed containers as much as possible.

Use lids for your food containers and your beverages, or cover

them with a plate, foil, or plastic

wrap, in order to prevent the bees

from climbing into the food. If you

can hide some of the aromas of your

meal, the bees may not pick you up

as quickly on their radar.

CTCLUSI Tribal Housing

The Housing Department offers five housing

assistance programs for low to moderate income

Tribal families.

5. Marigolds

Use a pot of marigolds as a

centerpiece on your table; they serve

as an attractive decoration, and they

naturally repel bees and other bugs.

Bees and other bugs find the scent

unpleasant.

FIRST

TIME HOME

BUYERS!

UP TO

$15,000

6. Cloves

Place 4-5 cloves on the food table.

Bees hate the smell and should

steer clear while you’re eating.

7. Mint Leaves

Sprinkle mint leaves around your

eating area. This plant will help to

mask the sweet smell of your food

to keep bees from noticing all of the

delicious grub they are missing out

on.

8. Avoid Bright Colors

Bees notice bright hues and sweet

smells; essentially anything that

reminds them of a flower. Avoid

bright colors and floral prints for

your tablecloth or picnic blanket. Be

careful when selecting plates and

napkins, and make sure they are all

white or another non-floral color

9. Keep Trash Away and Sealed

Keep the food and trash bins tightly

covered when not in use. This will

help reduce the enticing aromas that

might attract these pesky insects.

10. Dryer Sheet

Fold a fresh dryer sheet and put it

in the pocket of whatever clothing

you are wearing. If you are carrying

a purse or beach bag, throw a few

fresh sheets in that as well.
