Summary
Observations were made of the stores operated by Von,
by Shopping Bag and by Alexander in the Los Angeles
area. The following report gives details of the study which
was undertaken to define the desirability of these groups as
a basis for entry into this market.
As a result of the information obtained the following
recommendations are made:
Von’s is generally desirable from a merchandising
viewpoint (in spite of a number of stores which need
remodel or relocation) because of its stature in the
area, actual coverage of the market, and current
money-making strength.
Shopping Bag is likewise desirable because, in the area
where it is found, it has generally excellent physical
facilities and they offer a potential for growth.

Alexander’s, although several stores are first-rate, is
less desirable because of overlaps with Shopping Bag,
so the contribution of Alexander’s would be small.
The following pages carry details of the study showing:
1, The market ia general and ratings of the chains.

3. The stores, their layout, their competition, a descrip-
tion and summary for each.
4. Photos of some personality traits of the chains.
The Market in General
The grocery chains of the Los Angeles area topped one
billion dollars in sales for the first time in the calendar year
1956. $1,017,256,400 or 55.83% of total grocery sales, accord-
ing to the Los Angeles Examiner. Attached is their break-
down of the figure into “share of market” for the 34 leading
chains and the percent to total of each chain. Von’s appears
as third with 4.5%, Shopping Bag fifth with 3.7%, and Alex-
ander thirteenth with 1%.
Likewise at‘ ached is the continuing home audit of the Los
Angeles Times, showing where the customer “bought the
majority” of her purchases separately for groceries, for
meats, and for produce. This covers 18 leading chains and
is not share of market, but gives a comparison of individual
chain strength. Von’s is most frequently third, Shopping
Bag fifth or sixth and Alexander ninth.
The Market as Seen by Informed Individuals
A limited number of informed personalities in the food
industry were questioned about the relative rank of leading
food chains in the market. Following are some of their com-
ments :
Mr. Tom Virgil of Star Kist, tuna packers, rates the
leaders as follows: Safeway, Ralph’s, Von’s, Market
Basket, Shopping Bag and Alpha Beta. He indicates
that Safeway’s strength is in the rural areas. Up until
the last eighteen months Safeway had been described
a

as a sleeping giant but today is considered the most
aggressive on national brands.
Ralph’s he describes as the price leader. This was es-
tablished about three years ago when Ralph’s held all
volume items to 6 percent markup for about three
months.
Von’s, in third position, reportedly follows Ralph’s
closely on price; is described as outstanding on pro-
duce.
Shopping Bag is best known for excellent meat and
produce as well as friendliness of employees. A new
central bakery has just been completed which will
eliminate on-premise bakeries.
Mr. Bill Massey of Brown-Massey Associates, food
brokers, describes the market as follows: Safeway is
No. 1, followed by Ralph’s, Von’s, Market Basket,
Shopping Bag and Thriftimart in that order. He be-
lieves that Safeway’s current reorganization will help
but that the time has gone past when it could have
owned the market. Mr. Massey discussed the Cali-
fornia Milk Marketing Act of 1935 which has resulted
in enormously profitable dairy operations. Safeway,
Ralph’s, Von’s and others are enjoying profits from
dairies.
Mr. Meyer Lewis of Flotill Products, food canners,
puts Ralph’s in #1 spot, followed by Von’s Safeway,
Market Basket, Shopping Bag and Alexander in that
order. He likewise emphasizes the importance of
dairies and dairy profits in grocery operations here.
Mr. Lewis commented on some small chain mergers,
stating that Roth Markets ($10,000,000 sales) has re-
cently purchased Fox Markets ($18,000,000 sales).
Likewise Food Giant ($22,000,000 sales) is reportedly
purchasing Hiram’s ($12,000,000 sales).
Charles Rose of the Los Angeles Times rates the chains
in the following Order: Safeway, Ralph’s, Von’s,
Market Basket, Shopping Bag, Thriftmart. Safeway is
reportedly on an aggressive program of store location

which involves razing old buildings in well settled
neighborhoods to get a modern store, rather than going
into new growth areas where there is new competition.
An example is their new market at Sunset and LaBrea.
A & P is said to have been run “at the end of a tele-
type”, accounting for its absence in the above ratings.

A Comparison of Retail Prices
Von’s retail prices, as reported by Grocers’ Weekly
Guide, were studied for the week of August 14, 1957.
2435 retail prices were selected for comparison with
like items as priced by Ralph’s.
1550 items were priced the same. Of this list, 1520 were
grocery items and 30 were meat items.
600 items were higher at Von’s. Of this list 565 were
grocery items and 35 were meat items.
285 items were lower at Von’s. Of this list 256 were
grocery items and 29 were meat items.
The above comparisons were made with Ralph’s, because
it is generally considered to be the price leader in the mar-
ket. Differences between Ralph’s and Von’s usually were
not large, being pennies to fractional parts of a penny.
Similar data is not gathered for Shopping Bag or Alex-
ander. However, general observations indicate that their
retails are slightly higher than either Ralph’s or Von’s.
Ratings of Stores
Each individual store described in this report has been
rated in the following manner:
First-Rate: A growing store with a future—desir-
able.
Second-Rate: A store with a qualified or limited out-
look as described.
Third-Rate: A poor store without a future—unde-
sirable.
On this basis, Von’s rates as follows:
First-Rate: 12 stores
Second-Rate: 13 stores
Third-Rate: 1 store

Second-Rate: 8 stores

First-Rate: 4 stores

Summary: This is an old store with a face-lift. It continues to have a good
hold on the trade but rates as second grade because of physical limitations.

$40,000 per week. Uses 2 grades of beef, liquor and complete non-foods
including housewares, stationery, soft goods.

Ses ey Ha 7th and Montana, about one mile away, is small, four
outs, and old. © Lillywhites at 14th and 17th on Montana are small
and appear to be concessionaire rations. There is also a Baer’s on 17th.
None of these constitute a threat. Hope is that Von’s #2 is overhauled before
a sharp new operation drops in on the area.
