appearing high, looks to, be in lire when it is considered

that they. have guaranteed this still for a working pressure

of 500 Ibs. with a factor of safety of 4. We have checked

up weights of iron for the shell and the head, and find they

are ample, and, since they seem to be very confident that

the still they manufacture will meet. our requirements, I

believe we are warranted in going ahead with the rest of

the design for .ais apparatus, and I would be glad to get

together with you and other parties interested at an early

Dear Sir: a ys

ye. A ° ‘

We have developed a need for special flanges, elbows

and return bends, for 2 in. pipe to withstand:-a working

pressure of 500‘Tbs. per sq: in. at a temperature of 800 .

degrees Fuhr.

‘It is preferred that the bolts in these flanges be spaced

in the open, if practical; that is, to space them sé that none

will be directly under the bend, as it is our intention to

connect;a series of rows of pipe together, and for repair-

ing, desire an accessible connection. ' |

We are desirous of any recommendations proposed by

any of the pipe manufacturers, with a full description of

the joint, accessibility, kind of material, location, and

number of bolts used in the fittings they are able to fur-

7 7 Pipe—Fittings. ape cee

Mr. ALS. Bailey, — - carts pas

~ Port Arthur, Texas. a

| Deg r Sir: \ | -

A letter on the above subjéct, addressed. to Mr. R. G.

Dawson, dated December 14th, dictated by R. C.K. of your

department and signed by yourself, has been referred to

us for notation. eg ae <e

We beg to state that the question of fittings required for

O00 pressure at a temperature of 800° F. is one that has —

been worrying us for sometime, and we do not seem to be

able to do better than having cast steel fittings offered for

this service. It appears to us that the forged steel screw

fittings, as outlined on pages #362, 363 and 699 of Crane's

Catalog 250 are best.adapted for working pressure and

‘temperature above noted, although their safe workilig pres-

sure is far in excess of our requirements. We have had

from time to tine conversations with salesmen of the vari-

ous pipe and fittings concerns, and have sounded tliem as

to the probability of special erade of ‘iron being used where

fittings are to be used in connection with high temperature.

distillation, but apparently this question has not been de-

bated, by any of the manufacturers as vet, nor are we ae-

quainted with the practice of other concerns who are ‘using

high pressure distillatiow: processes whieh may or may not

require a special grade of cast iron or steel fittings in

connection with their pipé work. — | :

In connection with the Five Vertical Stills, which are

heing installed under Estimate 2025, it was our original °

intention to use Crane Kxtra-heavy Cast Tron Fittings for

DX 692. a |. 2647.

a working pressure, which ortginally was not to have ex-

ceeded 1254 per square inch, and temperature of.700° F.

Quite recently it was decided to increase working pressure

to 200% per square inch; this*pressure being limited to

= the safe working. pressure of the stills themselves.

4486 In this: connection, Mr. R. C. Holmes advised that

- all fittings. direetiy in contact with the most extreme.

heat, such as elbows on vapor lines, charging. lines, reg-.

ulating lines, ete., should be of east steel. These fittings,

under ordinary conditions, you, are aware are good. for safe

working pressure up to J2005 per square inch, or more

according to their size.” With fittings of this type, we

feel reasonably sure that-no amount of stress due to shrink-

~age or expansion ‘of lines will canse them-to break, as

certajuly the internal pressure will tot be in-anyway near

~@nough to even bring them anywhete near their bursting

Rmit. . Nhisteaves the only ‘unknown factor—that of the

effect of \extreme high temperature jon: the texture of the

material combined with high internal pressure.

As we have said before, we pati not been able to get

anv information along this line from any of the manufac-

turers furnishing us with fittings, and-it looks as though

we are left to experiment with the various kinds of fittings

of standard-inannfacture and select from them such fittings -

“ds we find best to serve our purpese. Of course, on-small

installations the question, of economy. would be negligible,

but should, any of the hig. pressure processes,-new being

sed or experimented with, prove to be economical as well

s adaptable, no doubt Inrge installations would be con. .

emplated at our various refineries, in which case it would

appear that, the’ question of economy would be one to be

consiuered. In this connection, it is entirely possible that

a grade of fittings could he found which would be -satis-

factory and considerably less expensive than either

4487 cast or forged steel. 5 : ae

* In this connection, we bee to state that we have just

received’ a quotation on a comparatively small quantity of

east steel fittings for use in the installation of the Five.

Vertical Stills on the Westside, which amounts to ap-

proximately $3,800.00; Iut.in order to be absolutely Sure

that every precaution has been taken to avoid bursting of

fittings. we were compelled to purchase at this. price.

Should) you in the future *develop any information,

through personal conversation or otherwise, relative to

no a DX 692.

high pressure type temperature fittings, we will be glad

to have you furnish us with information regarding same,

as we have about given up this question and decided ‘on

using the best gradé of fitting’ procurable on: any future.

installations of this kind which may be contemplated. —

Making Gasoline, of which the following. is a specifica

tion:

4492 This invention relates to metheds aiid appar-

*. atus for making condensable light oils, such as gas.

. oline.:

More particularly it relates to certain. novel improvements

in the - ‘cracking of -hydrocarbons whereby higher boiling

hydro- °° .

carbons are decomposed info those of lewer boiling point.

In prior methods of cracking hydrocarbon oils,

considerable difficulty has been experienced on account of

oe formations, which occur on the sides of- tubes and

tills

exposed to the heat required to car rv on the niwaiiae opera-

tion. It is a novel feature of the herein disclosed process,

Ahat the cracking operation oceurs ina veasel to’ which

no ex-

ternal heat is applied, except at times ; that are necessary to

overcome heat radiation, the oil prior to its introduction to

such vessel having been subjected to a high degree of neat

and

the excess heat of the oil itself being used to effect its own © |

“decomposition. As a consequence, we avoid carbon forma-

- tions - :

of the destructive character which have proved such: an

impediment |

to prior systenis. The removal of the ‘cracking operation

from the | Seay it ee

- 4493 heating’ zone also reduces the danger’ from thie such

as fre-

quently oecur where cracking | is carried on in highly heated

stills and coils exposed to direct heats . |

Our process embodies a nov el circulatory sys- .

tem.m which a ring of oil-is canstantly maintained side

varying liquid and vapor phases. . The oi! to be treated on

entering this ring ‘is subjected to a high degree of heat, |

but the time element is so controlled that there is compara-,

tively little decomposition while it is exposed to this ex-

‘ternal heat, the oil being rapidly@emov ‘ed frony the- ‘heating

zone and conducted to the cracking zone, where without

. being’ ; ¥

subjected - ts additional heat, it t Mfderzoes a moleenlar

ition whereby carbon and light. products are formed.

. e@ + " e o

bulk of the carbon is removed from the ring by withdrawing

from the cracking zone portions of the residual oil. The

light products continue the cycle, leaving the cracking zone .

in the form of vapor and gas. These vapors and gases are

then subjected to a reduction in temperature, whereby the

heavier constituents thereof such as kerosene, are con-

densed, Ve | ¥ a

The condensate is combined with the charge of oil entering

the heating zone thns completing thé cycle. The constit-

uents ; ah Pye

of the desired volatility are removed from the ring and con-

densed. The dutlets from the ring are so controlled that the

entire system is-maintained under a pressure sufficient to

* insure the desired molecular transformation.

Our process is to be distinguished from those _ er

of the prior art, in which a ring of liquid residuum is kept

in circulation. When such oil is kept in circulation, con-

siderable quantities of carbon are fprmed, owing to the read-..

iness with which this type of oil carbonizes when exposed to

— == : . ci

4494 a temperatures, the carbon forming in fine par-

ticles in

the oil, and wherever it comes in contact with heated metal

surfaces, it attaches itself thereto and builds up deposits,

which often cause the choking of tubes and coils. Tt also

ervystalizes the metal surfaces, therebv decreasing thé ten-

sile strength of the metal and-causing the bulging and break-

ing of such snrfaces. Any residual oi! resulting from the

cracking operation will necessarily contain a considerable -

amount. of carbon held in suspension in the oil and to cir- .

culute such a residue through heated tubes is to continual-

ly pass into such tubes a large amount of free carbon. In

our system awe do not circulate a residuum, but instead keep

the residual oil removed from the application of external

heat and withdraw the heavier pottions thereof (which con.

‘tain the bulk of the earhon} from the evele at the cracking

ane, and continue the cvele by means of the vapor gener-

ated, Liar

which contains the condensable product desired and also

certain : ; ee

— constituents which*are used to complete the cycle.

the rin

free ie this source ‘of carbon formation, and sincé we con- -

duct the actual cracking in a vessel unexposed to external

heat, we are thus able to effectively remove - carbon

formed.

In cracking oil for gasoline, there is spiel.

ly formed a considerable quantity of vapors heavier than

= which may be generally designated by the term, .

kerosene:

- We employ these heavier vapors as a carrier for the lighter .

vapors; they assist in maintaining a current of vapor by

- which

the gasoline is’ removed from the eracking zone toa

separator

where the kerosene vapors are condensed. and removed

from the |

gasoline ‘vapors which pass on to ‘the condenser. The

kerosene condensate preferably at a tempera-

a . =

into

‘the oil charge eintering the heating tubes, whereby a hater

mixture ,is -produced, which accelerates the circulation in

_ the hedfing tubes thereby preventing oe oil from) being

over- ee

heated, and also k ing the tubes wept free me any

carbon |

formations. These kerosene conatituents are an excellent

mechanical conductor of heat, and there is thus produced a

heat cycle which maintains the proper temperature in the

cracking zone. By maintaining these bodies in constant cir-

_ enlation, the kerosene constituents, which under existing

methods have been found so difficult to deegmpose into light-

er products, Be in our system, ultimately reduced to gaso-

line.

‘We have devised certain novel apparatus which ~

_ is adapted for carrying out our process, and illustrate the :

preferred form thereof in the drawing which represents a

used in carrying out our process. .

The coil 1 is located in. the furnace ) having

the burner 3 and the staek 4. A’ janet brick baffle 5 hav-

ing the openings | 6 may serve to distribute the heat evenly

“over

the coil. The idceaiiens line 7 # having the jet 7*, extends to

the pump 8, which is ——— toa suitable source of -oil

.supply not shown. The pipe 9, having the vaive 10, extends’

from the heating coil 1 to the cracking’ drum i1, within Ww hich

it terminates in the distributor 9°. The eracking drum is

preferably heavily insulated against heat radiation and is

equipped with the valved draw-off 12, and the vapor outlet

13. . ;

It may also. have an oil gauge 14. The vapor outlet 13 -

- extends oak . |

to the separator ‘Ws ), having the \ vapor outlet 16, and the con-

as

4496 densaté outlet 17. The vapor line 16 terminates. in. the

water-cooled condenser coil 48, ‘having the outlet 19

equipped with the valve 20. If desized the vitlve 20

may be placed in the vapor line 16,. The outlet 19 ter-

Thinates in the collecting drum 21, having the valved ga

outlet 22 and the valved condensate outlet 23. The con-

detisate line 17, which is preferably insulated, is equip-.

ped with a v: lve 17 -and is connected to the charging

line 7 ¢ at the jet 7"

In conducting the process with. the appara-

tus illustrated, the oil to be treated is foreed through :

the charging line 7 under considerable pressure, and is

rapidly circulated through the héating coil 1, where it

is heated to the desired temperature. -Fhis temperature

is higher than the temperatures at which it is desired to con-

duct the cracking operation. The oil’ on being cireulated

through the coil acquires considerable heat, but on account

of :

the rapidity of its flow, dec -omposition is only j in the insipient

stages, the oil being withdrawn inte the outlet .9'as eracking -

develops and.is passed into the cracking drum 11 where a

constant? |

body of oil is maintained at.a cracking temperature. The

distributor. §* serves to discharge! the oil. into the crack-

ing druin ina wide stream, thus spreading out the vapors

and gases in the str-am whereby their heat.is diffused -

throughout tlie body of oil in the dru. This: heat dif-

2

fusion is materially aided by using a distributor with

serrated edges. The rapid circulation of the oil having -

been suddenly ‘Suspended, and the oil having: entered a

chamber .

4497 of ample lana, the excess heat of the oil operates to _

maintain the body of pil at the desired cracking

temper-

ature and molecular. ‘decomponition i is carried on vigorous-

dy, the higher boiling hydrocarbons continually breaking

up into hydroe arbons of lower boiling point. The vapors

and gas generated gather in- the upper part of the cracking

drum and pass out through the vapor outlet 15 to the sep-

arator 15, where there is-effected a separ ation of hydro-

‘arbon of desired volatility from those of less volatility

. than desired. The hydrocarbons of the desired volatility

pass out through the vapor line 16, by which they are con-

ducted to the condenser 18, where ‘they are conde nsed and

the condensate is either intermittently or continuously’

allowed te run into the collec ‘ting drum 21.

The temperature in the air condenser .is - =

such that the less volatile hydrocarbons are condensed and

dropped into the conduit 17, by which they are conducted to

the jet in the charging line. The separator is preferably

somewhat elevated so as to give a considerable head of_li-

quid in. the pipe 17, which preferably contains-a U bend as —

illustrated in order to form a liquid seal therein. This

head of liquid, together with the high pressure-at which=-

_ the oil in the charging line passes tie jét, this pressure

being ordinarily from 50 to 100 pounds higher than the pres-

-sute in the drum, insures that the condensate shall be con-,

stantly drawn into the charging line and forced into the ,

coil 1. The introduction of.this condensate into the charg-

ing line increases the volume of oil in the heating coil

thereby accelerating the flow therein so that the coil is

swept free from any carbon formations. - This condensate

composed into lighter vsiniliani without the erdduction of’

large amounts of carbon. This condensate reaches the jet

ina heated condition, preferably at a temperature not mat-

erially below its boiling point, so as to heat the charge.

of oil entering the heating coil. The heat eyclé formed by’

the kerosene constituents enables the maintenance of the

"proper cracking temperatures i in the cracking drum. By in-

jecting this condensate into the ‘heating coil we increase

the volume of oil flowing therein. withoat increasing the

total amount of oil in the system at any given time. .

_- A considerable pressure is maintained through-

out the system, which pressure is regulated by means of the

valve 20 or the valve on the gas outlet: 22. The pressure

used varies with the ¢haracter of the oil operated on ard on

- the character of the product desired. Ordinarily the decom- ©

position in the eracking drum i is carried on under a pressure

of from 100 to 400 pounds. :

The oil to be decomposed is ecnistantty forced

into the heating cecil thereby causing a steady stream of

heat- —_.

ed oil to enter the cracking chamber. The, residuum is

withdrawn =<

preferably at such a rate that there is maintained a constant.

-body of oil in the cracking zone.

It is desirabie to equip the apparatus with ;

the valves 10 and 17* so that in case there is a break in the

heating coil the effect of any. fire resulting may be localiz-

ed by closing said valv es whereby the bulk of oil in the sys-

tem will be retained i in the cracking drum 11. It is under-

- stood that in the normal operation of the — these

. valves

are.open.

‘It.is sometimes necessary to apply an auxiliary '

heat to the eracking drum. A convenient -method of

providing ~ iri Dian. |

4499 this auxiliary heat is to insulate only ‘ties upper part

-of

the drum and enclose the lower portion in a furnace. In-the’

early stages of a run, since there is no danger of overheat- |

ing a éarbon-free surface, the drum may be heated freely:

until the necessary heat cycle has been generated and decom-

- position has begun. But when decomposition begins, with a

~ consequent deposition of carbon, the fire must be reduced as

.

+ DX 696." 2

otherwise the carbon wéuld accumulate on the hot surfaces

and build up tenacious formations thereon, thus preventing

the effectual removal of the carbon and asphaltic bodies.

As the run continues only a moderate heat is-applied, suffi- -

cient only to offset the loss of heat due to radiation. If

desired: the drum may: he heated by means of waste heat.

The product obtained by the herein disclosed

_ process ‘is, for a cracked product, remarkably sweet,

“in other words, low in unsaturated compounds.

It is understood that we use the terms ‘‘Gasoline’’

and -‘*‘Kerosene’’ fest this application in a somewhat

broader sense

than they are ordinarily used in -the art. By the term

‘“‘Gasoline”’

as used herein, we mean the volatile product desired whieh

under the temperatures and pressures used is a vapor’in the

‘separator 15 and is condensable in the cooling coil 18. We

designate by the term ‘‘kerosene’’ those constituents which

under

the temperatures and pressures used enter the vapor ‘jine

13 in

the form of vapor and are condensable im the separator

15. It’ 2

is te be noted that the character of the constituents which we.

have found convenient herein to refer to as kerosene may

Pre-Heater

Mr. F. B. Capen,

Port Arthur, Texas.

Dear Sir: . pee ala

We are forwarding to-day by. Ww ells Fargo Express, two

2” ammonia return bends, 8” center to center. One-of these

bends is made of malleable iron, and is.furnished by the

York Manufacturing Company. This’ bend is supposed to

be for 300# working presse and is painted grey.’ The-

second bend, painted. red, is that regularly ‘furnished ‘by

the Vilter Mfe. Co. for their extra heavy class’ of goods,

and is also for 300% working pressure... The companion

flanges on this latter bend are dropped forged steel. Both.

bends are equipped with male and female fiange connections

-and were supposed to have been furnished with corrugated

copper gaskets, but we note that one has been furnished

with rubber gaskets and the other with lead gaskets,

neither of which, of course, will be suitable for our require-

ments.

We would like to hate these flanges tested for both: heat

and pressure combined, if this is possible, There is no

doubt in our mind but what either of these bends would be

suitaole for.any pressure they would be called upon to

stand in connection with-the experiments which are to be

conducted, but as to whether the combination of heat and

pressure will affect them any, we do not know and would

like to determine: “We regret very much that we have been

unable to.secure these return bends at an earlier date but

it was only vesterday that we received the one from the

Viitet Manufacturing Company. We had hoped to have

secured information and samples from the Crane Co., Clow

& Co. and the National Tube Company, but we have been

‘advised through the Purchasing Department that these

people have not in stock a class.of goods which they could

2674 DX 699.

recomniend for use in connection with high pressure, ‘high

temperature work; so it will be necessary to do what. we

~can with samples.on hand. , © Peat hose

In making the pressure test, it might be well to build up

pressure as much as the small feed. pump, which you-have’

recently installed at the West Side stills, will give-them. If -

we remember correctly, this pump is suitable for pressure

of about 700% with. 100% steam pressure. - a

We are also enclosing herewith a. pencil-sketeh showing

two types of coils, either of which would be ‘suitable for a

pre-heater ~f the kind-we have in mind, if it is possible

to assemble with ease and on which we may take up bolts

in flanges that may develop leaks after heat and pressure |

have been applied. Sketch ‘‘A’’ cutlines the use of

‘4012 8” center to center return bends and will provide one

and one-half 2” pipe tubes per foot of width per coil.

Sketch ‘‘B’’ outlines the use of .6” center to center return

bends which will provide two full pipes per foot of width

“per coil. The only feature in either of these voils which

will be undesirable is that of the apparent difficulty which

would be encountered in taking up bolts between each layer

of coils Of course, we can design a flange in which all bolts

could be reached with a socket wrench but it would take

considerable time to get such fittings and we doubt if under |

existing conditions we conld even persuade manufacturers

to go to the trouble of running any specials thru their shops.

Will therefore thank you to put this question to Messrs.

Fox and Witherup with the view of ascertaining, if pos.

sibie from samples on hand, whether we eould uke. steck

fittings and make provision to take up leaks after coil had

been put in,use, should the coils’ be installed as outlined |

on either one of the sketches on attached drawing.

We personally prefer the scheme as outlined’ inusketch.

‘“‘B"’: that of using the 6” center te. center return bends: on

horizontal runs and an 8” return bend for # cross-®ve;y be-

tween end pipes of each run, but we await your reply as. to

the possibility of taking care of leaks with the arrangenient

as we. have it outlined. We will also have to have an ex. '

pression from you as to Which sample of the return bends -

stand up the best under test in order that we may arrange

to purchase the one which will best serve our purpose.

Gentlemen: .

ca ‘Kindly advise the writer if you are able to supply a Jet

Pump with a capacity of handling from ten to fifty barrels

per hour of oil at 400°-F. against a pressure of 200: pounds

per square inch and pick up in.addition 79% of the ten to

: fifty barrels per hour. : 2

Also kindly advise the maximum lift the pump is capable

of raising the pick up. gee

We will require a stee] pump for this work because a

chemical reaction would soon render brass worthless.

Gentlemen :. |

Ba ae Referring to.vour inquiry of the 23rd ult. concerning a

“Jet Pump to handle oil at 400° -F., we would like some

additional information inorder fo arrive at a clearcunder

standing of vour problem. -

+2676 ie is DX7

Do you désire to supply oil wollen a pressure of 200 to

the Jet Eductor (yes) and entrain 75% of oil against a cer-

tain counter pressure, the value of which will depend on

whether the apparatus can be submerged in the iiquid to

be lifted or whether a suction lift has to be taken care df—

(yes).- We normally figure on obtaining a counter, pressure

equal to-one-fifth of the available pressure-of.the entrain-

ing liquid in which case, the volumes of pressure oil and

entrained oil are about equal. Kindly include in your re-

ply the specific weight (33 B) of. the oil to be handled and

| state whether the liquid to be entrained will also be at a

_tempetature of 400° F. (F. 600-700).

We shall be pleased upon receipt of same, to submit

recommendations for suitable equipment, and in the mean-

time, remain -
