Featured on our masthead for this second

issue of 2025 is the icon representing the

Eagle Clan / Caxsap Hikikarac. The Eagle

Clan holds many important responsibilities

within the tribe, including those being related to assisting the Thunder Clan as well as

other political and social functions. Eagle

clansmen held the responsibility to serve as

bodyguards of the chiefs. They also served

as soldiers in warfare. The Eagle Clan is

one of the four sky clans. The warriors from

this clan were known as the special forces

of the HoChunk army. The arm and ankle

bands worn by Eagle clansmen would signify

deeds a warrior accomplished during battle.

Families belonging to the Eagle Clan include:

Armell, Baker, Brown, DeCora, Hensley,

Hinman, Houghton, Hunter, Johnson, Little

Thunder, Little Walker, McKee, Rainbow,

Rice, Ricehill, Walker, Whitewater, and

Yellowbank. Our gratitude to the HoChunk

WTN HIRES NEW CEO

By Brian Chamberlain / Darla LaPointe

[Winnebago, NE] The Winnebago Tribe

of Nebraska would like to announce the

hiring of its new Chief Executive Officer,

Ms. Darla LaPointe. LaPointe is from Winnebago and is a member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska. Coming onboard

with the tribe just prior to the holiday period

in December of 2024, LaPointe is the third

person to fill the position since it was created in 2015. One tribal council member

from that period stated, “We created the

position so the tribal organization could

have a leadership role filled at all times.

It’s interesting to note that each of the

tribal members who’ve held the post have

been women.”

The CEO for the Winnebago Tribe oversees the daily operations of the organization and is directly responsible for leading

the hundreds of staff members who work

for our people. Each of the programs and

departments that are a part of the tribal

entity cover a wide range of areas. As

they carry out their various duties serving

the over 5700 tribal members, the overall

direction of the tribe is partly determined

by the CEO.

As part of our story for the new selection

of a Chief Executive Officer, LaPointe has

written her own introduction below.

Hello! My name is Darla LaPointe, and

I am a member of the Winnebago Tribe of

Nebraska. I belong to the Snake Clan. My

parents are Daryl LaPointe Sr. and Mary

Greaves. I have lived in Winnebago most

of my life, where I attended HeadStart,

St. Augustine Indian Mission, WPS, and

NICC. I am the mother of 6 boys and the

grandmother of 6 - 3 boys and 3 girls.

I currently hold an Associate of Arts

Degree in Liberal Arts, from NICC, a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration

from Wayne State College, and a Master

of Science in Education - School Administration, also from Wayne State College. I

have spent the last six and a half years as

an elementary teacher at the Winnebago

Public School. Prior to teaching, I served

a 3-year term on the Winnebago Tribal

Council, served as the Education Director

for the Winnebago Tribe, Dean of Admissions and Records & Director of Financial

Aid at Little Priest Tribal College.

I enjoy living in Winnebago with my

family and friends and have seen many

changes that have taken place over the

years. As CEO, I hope to move forward

and continue to support the growth of

our Winnebago community as well as our

tribal members in a positive and respectful

manner. I believe we must work together

to provide a better future for the next

generations so our people can continue

to thrive and prosper.

Thank you.

Darla LaPointe

[Editor’s Note] Welcome aboard! We

look forward to working with you.

A new Eletronic Health Record (EHR) that

will transform care.

Winnebago, NE – Winnebago Comprehensive Healthcare System is excited to announce

that its new, modern, WinnHealth Record will

launch on February 1st. WinnHealth Record

will be WCHS’s new electronic health record

(EHR) software, boosting collaboration and improving consistency to create a better patient

experience for our relatives.

“As we looked to upgrade our EHR, in

every phase from vendor selection and

building to testing and training, our Health

System has been focused on creating an

electronic health record that best aligns

with our strategic direction” explains Austin

Schanzenbach, Chief Transformation Officer and Project Lead. “Launching WinnHealth

Record will mean significant improvements in

functionality, collaboration, automation, security, and patient safety across all services

creating a better patient experience.”

For the past year, WCHS’s project team

has been working with a healthcare information systems company to setup a new EHR.

Among other critical phases of this process in

December and January, WCHS completed the

“mock live” and “integrated testing” phases,

where a wide variety of different patient

scenarios impacting all departments were

tested from scheduling, registration, and

orders to discharge and billing. These phases

allowed the team to discover issues or discrepancies and resolve them before going live.

These phases are critical because they will limit

the number of problems that will come to light

in the first few weeks of an implementation

as significant and multifaceted as this one.

“I am sure I speak for the entire project

management team when I say that we are

very grateful to everyone who is playing

a role in this project, it has been and will

continue to be a significant team effort as we

bring it over the finish line,” says Susan Lowery,

Clinical Informaticist and Project Manager. “This

has been a long time coming for our health

system and we are excited to share it with

the community.”

After launch, the optimization phase of the

process will take several months as all employees become proficient in this new system. In

the first few weeks WCHS will have limited

appointments to accommodate the change.

While WCHS is striving for a seamless transition they would like to request that patients

and relatives with appointments in the first

couple of weeks of February come with

updated insurance and tribal ID Cards, plan for

potential delays, and/or don’t hesitate to call 402745- 3950 with any questions, follow-ups, or

concerns.

in his ways are called ‘Christians’ ‘ones with Christ.’ [Note well: not every

so-called Christian walks in the ways

being led by His Spirit; nor is there

any Christian who walks perfectly in

the Jesus’ way].

The apostle Paul continues: ‘Now

our tribal law can never have the say

over the ones who walk in the new

ways of the Spirit, and not in the old

ways of our broken humanity. The ones

who walk in these broken ways are

still thinking like weak human beings,

but the ones who walk in step with

the Spirit are thinking like true human

beings’ [Romans 8:4-5 FNV].

One does not have to walk in step

with the Spirit. One can follow the

desires of one’s body that opposes

one’s Creator and His ways. The apostle Paul informs us where this leads,

more importantly he goes on to tell us

the good news of the power and the

blessed work of the Spirit.

He writes: ‘If we set our minds on

the broken desires of our bodies, we

will see only death. But if we look to

the power of the Spirit, we will have life

and walk the road of peace. For the

thoughts of our weak human minds are

against the ways of the Great Spirit.

These thoughts will not and cannot

surrender to Creator’s law. The ones

who follow only their broken desires

are not able to please the Great Spirit’

[Romans 8:1-8 FNV].

So as not to end my article on one’s

inability to please the Great Spirit - the

way to please the Great Spirit is to be

blessed with faith in Jesus the Anointed One [Christ]. Jesus suffered in our

place and rose as a victorious spiritual

warrior so that all who believe in him

will have life, now and in paradise.

Along with the gift of faith comes the

power of the Spirit to guide one down

the road of peace, the road of peace

that leads through the doorway of

death to everlasting life.

Page 6 • Winnebago Indian News • Saturday, February 1, 2025

Question of the Issue:

The Lunar New Year is on January 29th, 2025. Welcome in

the Year of the Snake. Which Chinese zodiac sign are you,

and do you feel it captures your spirit?

Garan: So, if my calculations are correct, I am a rooster. 1981 was the year

of the rooster, I believe. Hmmm how does that capture my spirit? Well, I dance

chicken dance. “Cock-a-doodle-doo-doo!” don’t mind me if I say that all the

time.

Brian: In this zodiac I am under the Year of the Rat. Part of their definition

includes being quick witted, imaginative, resourceful, generous with family, observant, charming, diligent, and fun. I think I could go with those. … haha… ;-p

Back in High School a quote came to us “rats” though. It was – ‘The cornered

rat bites the cat.’ - Yup! Happy Lunar New Year! #dontmesswithus!

Tyler: My Chinese zodiac sign is the rabbit. The characteristics are defined

as quiet, kind, polite and thoughtful. Other traits were hesitant and cautious. I’d

have to agree, I’ve always been timid before feeling comfortable with others lol.

Kevin: **crickets**

Christina: I was born The Year of the Dog! The dog is described as a “he”

which is first off unagreeable lol. He hates any sort of injustice or unfair treatment and will do all in his power to help those less fortunate than himself. I

myself have thought about if I was financially free what would I do? I think

I would volunteer with the Red Cross or some international charity group.

Audrey Hepburn was very inspiring to me when I found out she did something

similar in her older ages.

This characteristic hit home… despite his friendly and amiable manner, the

Dog is not a big socializer. He hates having to attend large social functions or

parties and much prefers a quiet meal with friends or a chat by the fire.

Crazy to find out some fellow “Famous Dog People” are Elvis Presley and

Donald Trump

Bethani: Like Garanteed, my Chinese zodiac is also the Year of the Rooster. I was born in 1993 & according to the internet, I would have to agree with

some personality traits associated with the rooster. We are said to be very

hardworking, independent, & ambitious, as well as natural entertainers & artists. Our compatible signs include those from the Year of the Ox, the Snake,

& other roosters! Pretty interesting reads when you start checking out other

Chinese zodiacs.
