Volume 54, Number 9

Our masthead for this issue features the icon

representing the Snake Clan / Waka Hikikarac.

The Snake Clan is of the eight Earth clans.

Waka also translates to ‘holy’, which may

have represented that at one time the clan held

responsibility for some religious functions. The

Snake Clan holds responsibilities related to

sanitation and community service. Snake Clan

warriors, along with the Fish Clan, served as

defenders of the village. Families within the

clan include: Snake, LaPointe and Whitesnake.

Our thanks to the HoChunk Renaissance Department for providing their guidance with the

information shared here.

May 7th, Liberty National Bank hosted

a meet and greet for their new ATM. The

new addition is located across the street

from the Blackhawk Community Center/

Post office entrance, at 100 S Bluff Street.

The event gave the community a chance to

talk to a personal banker and open a new

account with the bank. Some convenient

features include checking deposits, cash

withdrawals, fund transfers and balance

Reminder to new and returning Vendors

of the Ho-Chunk Village Farmers Market:

aquire or renew your safe food handling

training. The Winnebago Comprehensive

Healthcare System and the Winnebago

Public Health Department are currently

scheduling classes in the month of May. For

more information on dates and times, email

Monica.cleveland@wchs.health asap.

April 30th, the Winnebago Comprehensive Healthcare System’s Health Education

Department held a ‘Protecting Generations’

Walk. Attendees completed a 1 mile+ walk

from WCHS’s parking lot to the BIA. Upon

completion a Health Ed design sweatshirt

was provided.

[Winnebago Reservation] The Winnebago

Gaming Development Corporation (WGDC)

has been busy. Busier than normal, that is. The

Winnebago Tribe’s Class II gaming company

that operates the Iron Horse Bar & Casino in

Emerson, NE, and the Native Star Casino in

Winnebago recently announced new updates

to each of their gaming floors. “We have been

working very hard to finalize our arrangements

that will bring new games to our patrons. With

the support of our board, these games will

come online and be available to the public at

last.” Sharon Redhorn-Chamberlain, CEO of

the WGDC told the WIN.

The new gaming floor will have dozens

of never-before-offered titles from gaming

manufacturers that are also new to the Class II

gaming mix for the tribe. “We have been working for a long time now to make this change a

reality. The legalities related to bringing in new

games are far more complex than most people

realize.” Redhorn-Chamberlain stated. “It has

been our goal for some time now to offer these

new games. Plus, they are just more fun.” she

continued.

The Iron Horse Bar & Casino is located in

Emerson, Nebraska. Opening in July of 2004,

that Class II casino began as a small operation

designed to help ward off the threats of the day

that included the potential loss of tribal lands.

“Those days are seemingly behind us, thankfully. But we haven’t forgotten why we are

here. We are still here to help meet the other,

more important goals of the tribe. The main one

being to provide employment opportunities for

our own people.,” Redhorn-Chamberlain stated

during the final stages of their preparations.

“We always want to ensure our own people

have a chance to work and gain experience toward achieving advancement opportunities, especially within our own operations.” She went

on to say, “When we can build and promote our

own people, the tribe grows in strength.”

Concurrently, the Native Star Casino is

located in Winnebago, Nebraska. It was opened

in December of 2005 based entirely off the rev-

enues of the Iron Horse operations. “The management of our businesses kept pushing for the

growth of Class II gaming. Winnebago benefits

from the two smaller casinos through the jobs

we offer and amenities we create for the local

economy.,” the WGDC CEO said. Native Star

recently faced substantial challenges with its

operations, as the local access road was placed

under heavy construction for resurfacing and a

full bridge replacement. “Those two [projects]

really hit us hard. They cut us off from the local

patrons and made it difficult for our travelling

customers to come here too.,” their CEO added.

The Winnebago Gaming Development Corporation was established by the Tribe following

legal proceedings of the U.S. Supreme Court

and District Court for related suits involving

Class II gaming within the State of Nebraska.

Those lawsuits provided a legal pathway for the

Winnebago Tribe to enter the Class II gaming

field. The WGDC is a wholly owned entity

of the Winnebago Tribe and boasts management comprised entirely of Winnebago tribal

members.

LITTLE PRIEST TRIBAL COLLEGE EXPANDS

[Winnebago, NE] On the main campus

of Little Priest Tribal College, the Board of

Trustees and College President held a Grand

Opening of their newly constructed science

building. Dedicated in name to the late, Louis

LaRose, the new campus addition saw the

community of Winnebago come together over

two days to help usher in the new era and

growth of the tribe’s esteemed higher educational institution. “We are honored to have the

Winnebago community present as we dedicate

this new building to the late Louis LaRose.”,

LPTC President Manoj Patil stated.

The new construction was brought to the

LPTC campus following years of coordination

by the leadership of the college. Coming in

at a cost of over $6 Million dollars, the new

facility will be home to the institutions STEM

(Science, Techology, Engineering & Math)

offerings, as well as other much-needed spaces

for the faculty, staff and students. President

Patil stated during an over the air interview

with The Big Voice Radio, “We want everyone

to know that Little Priest is continuing to grow.

We hope to keep moving forward to offer as

many opportunities as we can to our students.”

He continued, “[w]hen I first began we offered

[many] degrees. Today, it makes me proud to

say we offer even more and this will continue.”

The new building was presented to the

campus and the Winnebago people via a

two-day celebration that took place on May

1st & 2nd, 2025. Full tours of the facility were

available and included staff comments for each

of the participants. “Congratulations! Seeing

our college grow is amazing.”, one spectator

said during the celebration. On hand for the

official dedication, Winnebago Tribal Council

Vice-Chairman, Isaac Smith addressed the

capacity crowd. Smith also offered the opening

invocational prayer that was followed by honor

songs from local big drum group New Breed.

Being dedicated to the late Louis LaRose,

several members of his family had the opportuCon’t. on page 2...

nity to tour the building that will bear his name. His wife, Anita LaRose, was present at the ceremony that honored her husband. LaRose was involved at the dawn of LPTC making the choice of

this dedication in his name clear. LaRose passed away in the Autumn of 2023.

Several other tribal officials were also in attendance at the dedication ceremony, including Tribal Council members, WTN Administration, WinnaVegas Casino Resort Management, and even

Sioux City Chamber of Commerce members.

In related news, LPTC recently held groundbreaking ceremonies for their new carpentry

building. That facility is scheduled to open later next year. Little Priest Tribal College will also

graduate its largest class ever later this week at its Spring Commencement Ceremonies to be held

on Saturday, May 10th, 2025. Congratulations, Graduates!

And Congratulations, Little Priest Tribal College! Keeping the dream of your namesake alive

and well – Be Strong and Educate My Children.

JESUS OUR SAVIOR

LUTHERAN OUTREACH

‘Testing one two three’

I do not know how it was at your schools

- whether elementary - middle school - high

school or colleges/universities - but I for one

was often given tests. Most times, those tests

and the dates that they would be given would

be well known - weeks or even months in

advance.

That way - one was able - if he or she so

chose to be ready and well prepared to pass

the test. However, some teachers would give a

‘pop quiz’ or a ‘test’ when least expected. Most

students do not like to take such ‘pop quizzes!’

When one gets out in the ‘real world’ - one

experiences such ‘pop quizzes’ on a daily basis.

How do you respond when things go wrong?

When for example you go to cook something

up and find out that a necessary ingredient is

not in your pantry? Maybe you forgot to add

it to your shopping list. Or maybe someone

raided the refrigerator.

Or how do you respond when you had some

outing planned - and then something came up

and you had to cancel it? You might be tempted

to . . . cuss or swear. The devil is tempting you

- and at the same time God is allowing you to

be tested.

My question for you is: ‘How is God testing

you today?’ In the Gospel of John we read:

By: Pastor Ricky Jacob

‘When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd

coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where

shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” He

asked this only to test him, for he already had

in mind what he was going to do.’ [John 6:5-6

NIV84]

Each and every day you are being tested. Sad

to say - each and every day - I fail! At the end

of each and every day I have to admit to my

failure to put God first and to trust that He will

see me through.

Each and every Sunday - God invites us to

sit - so that we can hear him speak to us. So

that we can place him first and foremost in

our lives. So that we can be reminded of our

baptism and hear that our sin has been forgiven.

And so that we can, along with our brothers

and sisters in Christ, pray and encourage one

another.

Each and every Sunday, as well as each and

every day - God invites us to draw near to Him

and to receive His blessings that never run out

and that never end until we feast with Him in

paradise where all of the testing will be in our

past.

One has the freedom to go it alone. Or one

can pass God’s testing and receive blessings

now that strengthen one’s faith and that reassures one of the hope of life everlasting!

Question of the Issue:

You have been selected to choose the motivational motto for

graduation. What message are you sending out to the people &

your fellow graduates the Class of 2025?

GARAN: The pressure is on! I read somewhere that a motto should be short and

sweet. I like this one: “The tassel’s worth the hassle.” It brings me back to when my

parents said that people can steal your car, steal your wallet but one thing they can

NOT steal is your degree. Once you achieve your diploma you will always have it,

thus it is worth the hassle. Congrats to everyone that earned their right to walk across

the stage!

BRIAN: WHS Class of 1990, was this our motto? “What lies behind us and what lies

before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” – R.W. Emerson. Well,

IDK if that’s the one we used but it has stuck with me all these long years. Its message

focuses on the individual self-awareness we all need to have as opposed to the musings

and distractions that surround us. Always remember to be yourself, because those who

mind, don’t matter and those who matter, don’t mind.

TYLER:Hmm this one had me thinking. I didn’t really get into the graduation vibes.

I didn’t attend my own graduation either. I was over high school. lol. Sooo, I checked

out famous leaders’ quotes. “He who is not courageous enough to take risks will

accomplish nothing in life.” by Muhammad Ali stood out to me. Taking those first

steps towards a goal is always intimidating, but very rewarding. I hope the upcoming

graduates find and follow their true passion.

CHRISTINA: I have a personal collections of motivational quotes I have come across

over the years and it was hard to choose just one. While keeping the young, brilliant,

and adventurous in mind, I chose the following motto: "Don't make excuses for why

you can't get it done. Focus on all the reasons why you must make it happen." by unknown. Sometimes the details between the start and goal line are overwhelming but if

you keep moving along and focus on the goal and what it will feel like once completed

it will come faster than you may think.

KEVIN: : I have always been told by my dad, and I like that, "you can do anything

you set your mind to."

BETHANI: : "The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every

time we fall." Quoted from Nelson Mandela. I chose this quote because life can be full

of ups & downs. You can stumble, trip, or fall along the way, but grow through what

you go through. Get back up & keep going, no matter what.

33 Years Ago: Our conversation with one of the Originals

PT. 2

As begun in our last issue, the Winnebago Indian News sat down recently

with another special tribal member for our

exclusive Storytellers column. She is one

who is among a class of folks that sees

itself declining in number, yet beholden of

a literal treasure trove of experiences. The

person we’re speaking of is Kellie Snow.

Kellie was sought for this interview

because of her status and experience with

our main casino, but also because it is that

time on the calendar when the tribe marks

another year for that workhorse of an

operation – WinnaVegas Casino Resort. In

April 2025 they will celebrate 33 years of

business.

Kellie Snow is a proud member of the

Winnebago tribe. She has served our peo-

ple in various capacities over her career,

including becoming a member of BIA

Law Enforcement as an officer of the

law. With other positions and activities

throughout our community as well, her

experiences are definitely not one-sided

or singular. While at WinnaVegas, her career began in the pits of the Table Games

Department but soon branched out in

other areas of the operation. Always

one to take on an untried challenge, the

performance of those duties led to some

intriguing stories – many which were

shared with us as we talked.

Kellie was one of the first tribal members who filled a supervisory role at WinnaVegas, and she also became one of the

first tribal members to head a shift and a

department. Long known for training and

promoting our own people, WinnaVegas

became a catalyst for many tribal members over the long years of its existence,

and Kellie is certainly one of us. Given

the nickname “Keets”, as her late father,

Jim Snow, used to call her, she’s always

known where she comes from and helped

ensure the pathways forward never left

our own people behind.

The WIN will employ a standard

verbatim dialogue throughout this printed

interview to preserve as much as possible the original intent and context of our

discussion. However, some editing has

been done for clarity. The original transcript remains in the WIN’s possession.

Kellie’s appearance in the WIN is entirely

voluntary and her perspectives are hers.

So, please enjoy this conversation as it

is meant to describe her points of view

on the life she has, and the experiences

she’s lived. We are so glad she generously

shared them with us. The WIN appreciates her ability to open-up and share so

much of her story. Ladies and Gentlemen,

please allow me to introduce our third

Storyteller in these issues of the Winnebago Indian News: Ms. Kellie Snow – in her

own words.

We rejoin our Storyteller in Part 2 of

her amazing tale.

Early Tribal Members

(W) So, the days before that, going

back prior to [WinnaVegas] opening, one

thing that I’ve always kind of surprised

people with is, most tribal members do

not realize the decision to get into gaming

was not unanimous at the council table.

Of course, a lot of the council members

who were at the table at the time they’ve

either passed on or there’s just no one,

absolutely no one is still involved with it.

None of them. But that was a split decision at the table.

(K) I couldn’t even tell you who was on

there.

(W) Yeah, we found a newspaper that

had the minutes of those meetings. The

people who were there. It was a very

much, what you’d call a principal based’

decision. [That’s] my term. The ‘traditionalists’ voted no. So, those were the older

members of the council and those that

[believed] we shouldn’t get into this. [It’s]

not for us and stuff. But again, because it

was a split vote, it came down to it, and

it was if I remember correctly, it was five

to four. And so, and I can’t remember

who the chair was at the time. I cannot

remember, pretty sure it wasn’t John

[Blackhawk].

(K) Was it Louis (LaRose)?

(W) Perhaps. I’ll have to go back

and look at them [minutes]. Because it

[WinnaVegas] opened in April of ’92. So,

these decisions were in either late 1990 or

1991.

(K) I remember the non-native dealers.

A lot of them stayed in the business, and

the native dealers didn’t.

(W) Yeah. I mean, I did. I stayed in the

gaming business, like going on 30 years.

(K) I think Jules [LaRose] is probably

the one that’s stayed in it the longest. He

was continually dealing poker in Washington. Myself, I stayed in gaming. I went

when we moved [from] the new trailers, I

continued working as a shift manager and

then I got interested in surveillance. There

were no native people in surveillance. So,

I kind of liked it. That I would be in there

doing that. There were [other] natives

in there, but then being Winnebago and

being in there, I wanted to do that for us. I

knew the tables and they didn’t have any

experts in that. There were a lot of smart,

[table games] floor people. Heather Russell’s very intelligent and knowledgeable

and um…

(W) Mamie [Redhorn-Brownrigg].

(K) Yep, Mamie was in there. And

there’s still, you know, natives that are in

the business but not managing. I never

worked with Mayan [Beltran], but he’s

managing another property somewhere.

And that’s to me, that’s hard to do because I just could never leave Winnebago. My family was too important - my

grandmother and my aunties. So even

though I had a lot of good opportunities,

I just thought I can’t leave, you know?

I just don’t want to leave. And it sounds

great, but I can’t imagine leaving Winnebago and not being here close to home.

So, I say hats off to all those that do go

off and do stay in gaming and work in

other properties. That’s a big, that’s a big

commitment.

(W) Yeah, it is. Because WinnaVegas

will be celebrating, is it 33? 33 years.

Because like myself, my [gaming]

career was 30 years. And it’s like a lot

of it [being at WinnaVegas] Of course

that’s where I started – at WinnaVegas.

Like yourself, and so many others. But

transitioning, my path was onto the

regulatory side and it took over that part

of the industry with it. Then all the other

transitions and stuff like that. So, it is,

it’s a very open field. It was at that time

as well. Because again, most people

don’t realize or they don’t remember or,

whatever, is that those days were very

unscripted. The casino was open. Those

trailers were just, in my phrase, “buck

wild”.

Early Surveillance & Law Enforcement

(W) Oh my gosh, I’m sure you could

tell the stories and stuff, especially from

your experience in surveillance, which

was definitely longer than mine. But the

parking lot stories and so many other

things. Because what you think is like, oh,

we’re gonna go there and gamble. That’s

probably the lion’s share of what happens,

but there’s so much other [happenings].

(K) You don’t think on that part, on that

side of it, the parking lot. More cameras

are everywhere. Every house has a ring

camera. I mean, you can’t walk down the

street without saying, hey, I’ve seen you

on my ring camera, you know? But back

then it was I don’t even really remember

the cameras like, on the craps table or it

just didn’t cross my mind like, oh, they’re

watching us. But they did and then when

I transferred into surveillance, I mean,

geez, there’s so much the cameras can

see. And then the outside cameras, that

was huge I mean, there was a lot going on

in our parking lots. Let’s just say we kept

law enforcement busy. (laughs)

(W) And then, of course with that story

too, back in the day because of Iowa,

when Vegas would employ the off-duty

Woodbury County Sheriff’s department

employees. So, they would constantly

be on the property because somebody

had to be there with at the time quote

unquote ‘arrest authority’. So, getting to

know those guys. Because I don’t believe

the current sheriff was there. I think he

may have just been too young or just not

involved. But all the previous ones.

(K) Yeah. There was [Deputy] Kjos,

I think he was the one that really got it

started. And you know, the other ones

when I see them. Recently one retired

[Drew]. And I see Bentsen every now

and again. But, you know, they just had a

lot of respect for what WinnaVegas was

doing, and it was always a good relationship with Woodbury County. Everything

from having them on site to when we

started getting into the big concerts. Just

having that presence there really helped.

You know, kind of tap things out. You’re

in the middle of a cornfield. You got

millions of dollars in your facility. But we

were fortunate to have that coverage and

nobody ever tried anything. 33 years so

we did something right in that early stage.

And as much was going on in the parking

lots, we were lucky to have Woodbury on

property. To me, it was a good choice, a

good decision.

And actually, when I was a police

officer from 97 to 2002, we had to, part of

our monthly rotation was to cover WinnaVegas. For a short time when we were

transitioning from Woodbury to where we

are now, we would have to go over and

provide coverage. We called it the Eastern

District. [laughs]

(W) Going all the way over there and

stuff, how many cars have you gone

through?

(K) Well we had I think I just went

through two. We had an old Caprice

Classic.

Oh my God, I mean, embarrassed to

say that (laughs). But then we had moved

on to Crown Victorias like a Ford. So,

we never did have as a police officer, we

never had like four by fours or, you know,

we just had to cut around in the Crown

Vics, or the Caprice Classics.

They were souped up or really, really

the Indians’ [cars] were souped up and but

yeah, we just would cut even in the worst

blizzards and storms. We were just always

around. You know I got stuck a few times.

(W) That was always one thing, even

today. Iowa does an amazing job on

Saturday, May 10, 2025 • Winnebago Indian News • Page 7

the interstate. It’s usually great, unless

you’re in the middle of the white out and

whatever. Of course, no one’s gonna do

it then. But that three-mile stretch. From

the casino to the interstate, oh my god.

You wanna talk about a horrible, horrible

stretch of road. That’s where you’re gonna go in the ditch somewhere there.

(K) We’ve had a few go in. Yes, but

it’s not, you know, I can’t even remember

when they paved the road. It had to have

been before we opened the renovated

bingo hall.

Building the road

(W) It was after [that]… not long after.

Because it meant you had to go around

and then you literally drove through the

cornfield for a couple of weeks. You went

to the south and then came up from the

south in that cornfield. Now it’s a parking

lot area but the road is still there. Yeah.

But I remember that because the car that

I had at the time was that huge old boat

and it was muddy and it was just really,

really bad.

And it was kind of funny because

we’ve said that now a couple times unfortunately, because of the flooding that’s

occurred. It hasn’t come back, and it took

all those years [to return]. But at the time

I remember my dad [Keith Chamberlain]

was involved with the gaming commission and then, of course, always paid

attention to tribal politics. But there were

members of the council and people in the

community who were just livid [saying]

that road cost how much?! Because it

was over-engineered. It went deeper than

it needed to. But come to find out, that’s

what saved it.

(K) Yeah!

(W) All those years later, that build up.

That’s what saved the road. Because, the

huge, huge flood that occurred, and then

a couple of years ago, or a few years ago

but that road could have easily washed

away and WinnaVegas would have taken

even longer to reopen. But when was

that, 2019? Is that when it was? The most

recent one. Well, it happened last year.

But when the massive [flood], when the

ducks [were used] was that 2011? Is that

when that was?

(K) I believe so. Yeah. Because it

happened again, I wanna say like 2019 or

something. was that? The ducks were in

2011, yeah, yes.

(W) Oh yeah, I was a council member.

(K) And we had this one last year,

it just surprised the heck out of me. I

thought, it can’t flood again. You know,

like with the [river] channels and but

there was just a lot a lot of dynamics that

get into that that, you know. That we

don’t always look into. And just like regular workers and not being in surveillance

or in gaming, then you don’t really think

about those things.

Working Within Regulations

(K) Like how it all affects us at the

casino. And just when we first opened

the doors, and all through the years, you

know. What the gaming commission

looked into, and I always say this is, I

think Indian gaming is more regulated

than some nuclear facilities. Because it

seems like everything has, um everything

is written down and you have to do it the

way it’s written, you know? So, like with

the casino with the steps that they take to

ensure the safety and that the show must

go on, you know? That sometimes starts

with [the] gaming [commission]. Because

they’ll ask the question, are you ready for

this or where are your protocols on this?

So, we see the upper management. They

have to be ready for those things.

And so, they all tie into each other and

they all kind of make each other ensure

that we’re still, you know, open every

day. So, without the, I think a lot of times

without the gaming commission or that

regulatory [oversight], casinos can go

willy nilly, you know?

(W) Like to the south.

(K) Yeah. And it’s good that we have

that. That oversight. It makes it run

smoothly. Because you know you can’t

just go from A,B, C and D and forget

everything else in the middle and go right

to [the next] You have to do the steps as

they’re written and I think that makes our

casino strong.

(W) Oh, definitely, yeah.

(K) We have good gaming commission

protocols and they’re, know how they

control what we do and, so we always try

to um keep that in mind, so.

(W) Yeah, the establishment that was

required under the IGRA. Of course, the

tribe had really not any kind of actual experience in gaming. You know, a handful

of individuals had some kind of exposure,

but the tribe in general, and definitely the

leadership, they knew almost nothing.

And to that point, it’s not against them in

any way. They had to learn, and they had

to learn quickly. And I think a lot of them

did because of the regulatory portion of

that.

I’m not sure if he was the first, but he

was definitely involved in the beginning

of it, Victor Bird was part of the Gaming

Commission. Of course, he got elected to

the council and became its treasurer. His

story is definitely dynamic. Underrepresented or you know, not a very well told

story that men like him helped create everything that we’re still standing on today.

And then, of course, you know, there are

other individuals involved. My dad was

the Chair of [the gaming commission] for

many, many years. And we just continued

to move on and all that kind of stuff. So,

there’s a lot of people that did a lot of

good work with almost no experience.

But the intention to make sure that the

tribe was taken care of, and so that’s a lot

of good stuff there.

Early Casino Management

(W) Do you remember who the first

general manager was?

(K) I thought, … um I do not. I

wasn’t… we really didn’t have one. We

had, um the slot manager. Was it Milton?

And then we had Bobby Dunning that

overseen the tables. He was kind of the

[manager] but, you know, I think a lot of

the work was done by GNS or Stewart.

He seemed to be the one that was there

more than the other ones, in my opinion.

And if I remember right, their office

was like straight back from the bar. But

I don’t think we had one in the trailers. I

think it was just GNS and them. Directing

secretaries or, however. They ordered

goods and supplies. So however that

came about.

The first one in the [renovated] casino,

did we have a new [GM] after Bobby

[Dunning] left? We had Kaminski.

(W) Tom? I don’t remember their actual

position, though. I remember Glenn Korn

came in for a while. There was Tom

Florio.

(K) Maybe it was Florio.

(W) Was it? I don’t remember their

positions. I don’t remember what their

titles were.

(K) I remember them there and they

definitely, they were like the head honchos. But I don’t remember if they held

the title or how that all worked.

Early Competition Comes

(K) There was a time in there when it

wasn’t too many years after [opening]

when the… was it did the boat come first

or did or was it the boat action?

(W) The boat was first.

(K) Yeah, yeah. And that was a big

[change] I mean, that’s when we first

kind of seen all the competition coming

in. Because we paved the road over and

everybody seen what could be done and

you know, the rest is history, so.

(W) Yeah, because the Omaha [tribe’s

casino] opened here in August afterwards.

August or September, I think it’s August.

So, there was obviously some time WinnaVegas had, there was months of being

the only game in town and that kind of

stuff. Then maybe it was afterwards the

original boat in Sioux City. But that boat

was so little and tiny and just nothing.

Back then, too, they still had to float on

the water.

(K) So, I think my parents went on a

cruise, you know, I never did myself.

(W) No, neither did I.

(K) I don’t like boats.

Opportunities Passed & Taken

(K) I always felt that we made a mistake when we didn’t put the [first] hotel

right next to the casino. You know, being

up on the interstate it just didn’t serve us

well. I felt if we would have connected

them. I think we would have took a different [direction] We would have been better

served if it was right next to us, connected

to us. It would have been a game changer.

We still did well. We still took a lot on.

We built the hotel, and it was finalized in

16 years to finally get the hotel connected.

(W) They finished after the flood.

(K) They were able to get it open. But

we could have I thought we should have

put it right next to the casino [initially].

That would have been awesome, but it’s

good now, how things are.

(W) Yeah, and it’s iterations. Again, the

transition portions of it. I kind of wish

that at some point in [time] it’s all time

gone, water under the bridge with it or

however, but if there was actually like a

photographic storytelling of it. Because

the trailers were the trailers. There are a

handful of photos out there. You shared

a few of them last year and stuff like that

on your social media. And the people who

remember them. They remember what it

was like, small and cramped but packed

and really exciting. Because no one had

ever seen anything like that unless you

actually went to Vegas or New Jersey or

wherever. Reno, whatever.

And then moving and transitioning. I

remember that I was an employee at that

point and then making the decision to

close and cart it all over. It’s like, do you

remember that? The actual move from the

trailers to the renovated building?

(K) So, it was in winter time?

(W) Yes, it was cold.

(K) The slot machines they had to like

just put them on old fashioned dollies

and drag them over one by one. I mean,

it was a huge effort. All the employees

were there. I can’t think of anyone who

worked that didn’t [show up]. That wasn’t

there at least doing something. Just lifting

and pulling and of course, setting the

machines, the chairs, the stools, all that

kind of stuff, getting them into the new

building. Because I remember, and it’s

one of those things I remember the smell

of the carpet in the new building.

(W) Wow!

(K) Do you… I don’t know if you [remember] the pattern of it? It was kind of

like this fanned out multicolored cards.

(W) Yep.

(K) Shoot, there’s probably some in

our warehouse. You know we don’t throw

anything away. There’s always a little box

of it here or something of that. [gestures]

Oh, God, we still have that? But I mean,

that was then of course.

(W) Do you remember the T shirts?

“Just Moved It.”

(K) No.

(W) Yeah, it was like a Nike symbol

was - just do it. And then we just moved

it! [laughs] That would be so cool. Tom D

[DeCora] said he saved all those shirts.

(K) Simon and Patti?

(W) Yeah.

(K) Don and Vic [Snow] used to have

a lot of old ones. They had all their cool

T shirts and of course the drop crew ones.

The double XL

(W) We re-did that at the Iron Horse

specifically based on that because, I

remember those, and people would wear

them. I like that thing. When we first

started Iron Horse I re-did that design for

us.

And then like you said, there was a lawsuit and all that kind of stuff. I don’t really remember how that got settled, but the

tribe won. We were able to re-utilize the

building, then they started the renovation.

A lot of people don’t remember where

the buffet is, that didn’t exist originally.

The north wall was the north wall. The

restaurant came afterwards. The offices

and then many years after that the bingo

hall was added on to the south side. Then,

of course, all the other renovations that

occurred again, years and years later. So,

if there was a pictorial history that would

have been nice. I don’t think anyone ever

did, though.

(K) No, and I think collectively people

probably have like a few cam pictures,

like just throughout the years of some.

But you couldn’t really take pictures in

the casino anyway. Just because the gaming or surveillance just trying to protect

[the casino]. We lightened up quite a bit

on the casino floor. You can take selfies

and stuff like that.

We actually have people that film their

play, like the poker players. On the video

they have these blogs, and like push this

button here and push, you know, like a

little sequence. I didn’t even know that

existed, but yeah, it’s really a thing. It’s

like, well, as long as you’re putting money in there and pushing buttons, go for it.

More Table Games and Management

(W) I know, right? So, the casino it’s

been through so many different things and

that’s why I was trying to remember, like

some of these early individuals. Because

Tom Florio and Glenn Korn and Glen

Costales become…

(K) I can’t remember Costales. I may

have moved on to law enforcement by

then.

(W) No, you were there. I think you

might have been in surveillance then,

though. Because he was very, very table

oriented. He was actually in the pit with

us. and stuff, so, and he was at the time.

Because I was like... was I 21… not

even? Right in there, though. And he was

a younger guy. I don’t even think he was

30. So, he and the other guys they seemed

old at the time, but they’re probably

younger than me now. But yeah, it’s just

kind of crazy remembering some of these

people.

Because Glenn [Korn], of course, was

basically over the pit and the table games

area and poker and all that kind of stuff.

When the shifts changed and that kind of

stuff, you became the shift manager for

grave. I think the day manager was either

him, and I can’t remember who. Patty

[Nemesio] would get thrown in there

every now and then, but I don’t know if

she actually held the title. And then, Kris

O’Connor. She became the swing shift

manager.

So, what was that guy’s name? He was

on grave with you. Not Lyle [Archer],

but he was… he kind of had like blondish

hair. But he was losing it on top. Oh, what

was his name? Oh, my God, I can’t…

really I can totally see his face. He had

a mustache. Anyway, but because you

guys…

(K) You ask Paul [Hobbs]?

(W) No. You guys became kind of that

first official round of shift managers. I’ll

say it that way. Cause then others came

along. Mamie [Redhorn-Brownrigg] became the day shift manager. Tiffany Snider, she was… she floated between both.

Then, of course, myself and others. But

I, just kind of sometimes try to remember

some of the names of these people.

(K) I remember Patti Nemesio. Jerry…

Jerry uh Cooper. And then we had a Jerry

Fields. He was an old craps guy. He came

in and worked with us. There was another.

Jerry Carter, who was in surveillance,

who brought me in.

When people spend time and tell you

things like this is why we do this. When

we are changing layouts or we’re doing

[something] this is why we do it. Those

are the ones that I remember, like having

an impact on me. So, like telling you

things about gaming or where they got

started and that was really, a few of the

managers that were like that. Kaminsky. I

don’t know if he was the manager, but he

worked with us and tables and he was like

that. Always sharing information and why

we do this. He taught us roulette. Him and

his spouse. His, I think it was his wife,

they came in and specifically taught us

how to deal with that.

The general managers that I worked

under, that really had an impact was Lou

Rehwinkel. [He] was one of… I think he

really came in at a time where we were

transitioning into the bingo hall was being

built. And just really encouraging.

You know, the management [wanted us]

to own it. And he was one of those that

really did that. Throughout the years he

had a big impact on me. I’m still close

with him and Bobby Dunning. They still

call me. Actually, Lou wanted me to go to

Florida and run his… he had three ships.

He wanted me to run their surveillance

and get them started and train them. I

said, I don’t even like the water. He’s like,

you don’t have to go on the water. Just set

it up and train them. It was a great opportunity out of Saint Petersburg [Florida].

But I just couldn’t leave my Aunt Dot.

So, I said just things like that. I remember Heather [Russell] and how there

wasn’t anything that she couldn’t handle.

We started out and remember we used to

have keno? And pull tabs. And Brenda.

Brenda Warnock they just, those ladies…

they could do it all. There’s others. Other

individuals that were there too.

Our story with Kellie Snow will conclude in the next issue of the WIN.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

WCHS Welcomes Baby Girl “Neo Naylee”

By:Erin McElroy, WCHS Communications Manager

Winnebago, NE – On April 15, Winnebago

Comprehensive Healthcare System (WCHS)

held a special baby shower to welcome its newest

team member, a high-tech baby mannequin from

the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP). This

event introduced staff to new NRP equipment

and provided Twelve Clans Unity Hospital’s

Emergency Room and Inpatient nurses with

hands-on neonatal emergency response training.

WCHS does not offer labor and delivery

services. The majority of WCHS’s patients

deliver their babies at UnityPoint St Luke’s in

Sioux City where the same specialists who host

WCHS’s Family Medicine Specialty appointments can assist with the delivery. The NRP

mannequin ensures that nurses are prepared to

effectively respond, care for, and treat newborns

in an emergency. During the training ‘baby

shower’, WCHS staff learned how to properly

tend to an infant using the new mannequin and

equipment. As part of this “Baby Shower” cele-

bration, nurses participated in a drawing to name

the baby mannequin. The winning name, “Neo

Naylee,” symbolizes the hospital’s commitment

to readiness and compassionate care in all

situations.

“This baby shower brought energy and engagement to a vital training session,” said Sheryl

Steuk, WCHS Nurse Educator. “Our goal is to

ensure our nurses are confident and prepared for

any emergency that may arise, and Neo Naylee

will be an important part of that mission.”

The neonatal resuscitation training is one of

many continuing education opportunities provided at WCHS throughout the year. At WCHS,

staff members regularly participate in training

programs such as MOAB (Management of

Aggressive Behavior) classes, fire extinguishers,

NRP, and so much more. These consistent classes

help maintain a safe and skilled environment for

both patients and employees of WCHS.

WCHS remains committed to delivering

high-quality care by investing in its people, its

training, and its community.
