July 25th, at Veterans Memorial Park in

Winnebago, NE. In this photo, you can see

the Color Guards posted with their colors,

along with dancers passing by as they all

danced in the afternoon session for Grand

Entry.

Winnebago Tribe Secures 381 Acres Near River Bluffs

On July 15th, the Little Priest Tribal

College held a ribbon cutting for their new

pergola. The new addition incorporated the

HoChunk language from Velma Alaniz by

incorporating words ontop of the pergola

and words by Chief Little Priest “Be strong

and educate my children” on the wall.

[Winnebago, NE] In a historic step

toward its ultimate objective of tribal

land reclamation, the Winnebago Tribe of

Nebraska officially finalized the purchase

of 381.95 acres of bluff-side property on

June 15, 2026.

The land, purchased from the Olsen

family in Homer, Nebraska, was

previously known as the Thomas Ashford

Scout Camp. It features sprawling timber,

scenic lookouts, and preexisting event

centers. The purchase also includes

a residential home on the site, which

was verified to be in good condition by

Construction Management prior to the

closing of the deal.

This acquisition carries profound

historical weight, as this specific area of

land has a long and complex relationship

with the Winnebago Tribe. Following

the Treaty of 1865, the tribe established

its reservation boundaries, only to see

more than two-thirds of its tribal land

base splintered and stripped away

following the General Allotment Act of

1887. For generations, this bluff-side

region bore witness to the trials of forced

displacement, systemic land loss, and

the separation of our people from their

ancestral territory.

By successfully buying back this

property, the tribe is actively reversing a

century of painful history. This purchase

acts as a bridge to heal past chapters,

transforming a landscape once marked

by historical separation into a place of

tribal unity and a powerful physical

homecoming.

“Our main goal is to reclaim our land

back and to serve our tribal membership,”

said Fannie LaTray, Land Management

Coordinator for the Winnebago

Tribe. LaTray, who took the lead on

negotiations under the direction of the

Tribal Council, noted that this purchase

represents a monumental milestone for

the reservation’s expansion. During the

closing process, traditional tobacco was

placed on the property by Winnebago

Veteran and Elder Larry Payer to honor the

land and ask for blessings for its future.

While the main entrance point to the

property is currently accessed through

Homer, the Roads Department is already

planning to build an internal access

road connecting the property directly to

the neighboring Scotts farm purchase.

Once the ongoing fee-to-trust process is

complete to transition the area into official

trust status, the land will be managed

directly by the Wildlife and Parks

department to preserve its natural beauty

for generations to come.

On July 9th, as a result of a past storm, the

WTN Roads Department and Winnebago

Volunteer Fire Department crews worked

on the demolition of a damaged grain bin

located across from the Land of Wellness.

Procedures were taken place to ensure no

hazardous mineral or debris affected the

air. Other affected areas such as the Land of

Wellness are still open, except for the softball fields until repairs are finished. Thank

On July 8, 2026, Winnebago Tribal

Council members and Environmental Protection Department staff traveled to Salix,

Iowa for the city council meeting. The

city of Salix recently annexed 900 acres

for a proposed data center. During public

comment, Chairman Coly Brown stood up

to voice the Winnebago Tribe’s opposition

to data centers, “The Winnebago Tribe opposes the construction of a Data Center on

or near the Winnebago Indian Reservation,

ceded lands, and Treaty-protected areas.”

Brown spoke to the significant demands

on water and energy resources consumed

by data centers. He continued stating, “The

Winnebago Indian Reservation is situated above the Dakota Sandstone Aquifer

and the Missouri River Alluvial Aquifer,

two essential groundwater resources that

sustain our communities.”

He emphasized the need for government-to-government consultation with the

tribe.

Trisha Rivers, the Water Resources

Technician for the Winnebago Tribe’s

Environmental Protection Department,

shared that the proposed data center would

be approximately four miles away from

the newly returned land in Iowa. The area

in question is Snyder Bend Park, which is

home to various species and Native plants.

A large-scale data center would prompt

questions as to what water resources will

be utilized and how that will impact ecosystems downstream.

The public comments were split

regarding the data center. A petition was

presented by city residents with just under

a third of Salix residents opposing the rezoning of the property for the data center.

The population of Salix, Iowa is about

300 residents. The meeting concluded

with the Salix City Council voting 3-2 to

draft a proposed 1-year moratorium to be

voted on in August. The Winnebago Tribal

Council plans to attend the Salix City

Council meeting in August to support the

moratorium.

The tribe is working with the Braveheart Society for a teach-in about the

environmental impacts of commercial

data centers with a date tentatively set for

mid-August.

The Winnebago Wake & Burial Program has been selected as the 2026-2027 HoChunk Way recipient. Donations will support improvements to the Ho-Chunk Center, a

vital gathering place in Winnebago where families come together to honor loved ones,

celebrate traditions, and support one another. Funding will help begin building improvements, including installation of drainage systems, exterior lighting enhancements, and

upgrades to the kitchen and bathrooms. Plans also include creating a dedicated play area

for young children to better accommodate families using the center. These improvements will enhance the facility for the community and help preserve it for generations to

come.

As Program Director David “Kunu Dave” Russell shared that he is thankful HoChunk, Inc. employees take it upon themselves and donate to support needs in the

Winnebago community.

‘Take everything with a grain of salt’

As I studied a reading from 1st Kings

chapter 19, I noticed that the prophet of

YAHWEH by the name of Elijah was

experiencing a drastic change in his life.

Soon the members of Jesus Our Savior,

as well as myself, will experience a major

change upon my retirement.

Talk about major changes have you ever

asked AI a question?

As I was reflecting on this Bible story I

decided to ask AI this question: With the

influence of social media is it more or less

likely that users will be open to serve God

as teachers or pastors?

At the conclusion of this article I will

share with you AI’s answer. Now I was

taught - probably by my mother - ‘to take

everything with a grain of salt.’

So I asked AI: What does ‘take it with

a grain of salt’ mean? To take something

with a grain of salt means to view information or claims with skepticism or caution,

rather than accepting them as completely

true. It suggests that the source may be

unreliable, exaggerated, or unverified, so

the listener should maintain a degree of

reserve.

Then I asked AI ‘Should I take AI with

a grain of salt?’ AI responded: ‘Yes, you

should take AI-generated information with

a grain of salt, as current models are prone

to generating plausible but inaccurate “hallucinations” and lack true understanding or

accountability.

AI concluded: ‘While AI is a powerful tool for idea generation and creative

brainstorming, it should be used to aid decision-making rather than replace human

expertise, with all critical outputs factchecked by qualified professionals.’

The Bible reading I was studying included these words: ‘As (they) [Elijah and

Elisha]were walking along and talking

together, suddenly a chariot of fire and

two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven

in a whirlwind.

Elisha saw this and cried out, “My

father! My father! The chariots and

horsemen of Israel!” And Elisha saw him

no more. Then he took hold of his own

clothes and tore them apart. He picked up

the [mantle] that had fallen from Elijah

and went back and stood on the bank of

the Jordan’ [2nd Kings 2:11–13 (NIV84)].

In our Lutheran ways, when a man is

ordained into the ministry - as a pastor - an

under-shepherd to the Good Shepherd - the

Good Pastor being Jesus the Christ - he

is given a stole. In a way, a stole is like

Elijah’s mantle. This Bible story tells how

God is at work in raising up leaders to

follow in the place of their called servants.

Now back to my question to AI: ‘With

the influence of social media is it more or

less likely that users will be open to serve

God as teachers or pastors?’

AI’s answer: ‘It is less likely that users

influenced by social media will be open

to serving as teachers or pastors, primarily because the medium fosters a culture

of impulsivity, outrage, and superficial

engagement that contradicts the biblical

qualifications for church leadership.’

AI concluded: ‘The pursuit of “influence,” followers, and likes encourages narcissism and self-promotion, which

undermines the humble, servant-hearted

character required for pastoral oversight. Many leaders undermine their own

witness by vying for attention rather

than serving others.’

God has a way of raising up leaders as He raised up and prepared Elijah and

Elisha to His prophets. Today we will

once again pray that God would raise up

a faithful, Spirit fed and led teacher/director to serve in our preschool; as well

as a faithful, Spirit fed and led pastor under-shepherd to point people to Jesus

our Savior!

Give us a recommendation for a native song and a

contemporary song?

GARAN: I will do a two for one response. I would recommend Brule and a song

called Buffalo Jump. It’s a contemporary Native American Band, thus my two for one.

Back in my rock star days, I would perform this song with Brule as a drummer and

singer. The song has great dynamics, very uptempo, and makes people want to dance.

BETHANI: I enjoy listening to our Winnebago Singers, so I say go on YouTube and

check out the New Breed Drum Group channel. As for contemporary, I am going to

have to say, Safe to Say by BigXthaPlug and Ro$ama. This song gets me out of my

head and is sampling a throwback song by Ice-Cube.

CHRISTINA: For a Native Song I would say "Happy Days are Here...Again!" by

Northern Cree because its groovy and a like to jog to it. For a contemporary song, I

would say, "Watermelon Sugar" by Harry Styles because it my summer banger.

GAYLA: I’ll kill two birds with one stone and recommend “Believer” by Deer Lady,

a Brooklyn-based Indigenous band that blends shoegaze, Indigenous gothic, and folk.

The band’s singer and bassist, Mali Obomsawin, is from the Odanak Abenaki First

Nation.

The song is melodic, atmospheric, and deeply personal, with lyrics that feel like

pages from a diary. It’s refreshing to hear Indigenous artists creating in genres

we’re rarely associated with, challenging expectations of what Indigenous music is

“supposed” to sound like.

My favorite part is the repeated refrain, “I still wanna believe.” It’s simple but

powerful, capturing the feeling of holding onto hope through doubt and hardship. I

first discovered the song on a playlist accompanying Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, and

Lakota artist Cannupa Hanska Luger’s 2025 exhibition at The Joslyn, “Dripping

Earth”, and it’s stayed with me ever since.

[Winnebago, NE] Grounded in the

foundational truth that “water is life.”

The Winnebago Tribe’s Environmental

Protection Department (EPD) alongside

the Water Quality Team have stepped up

efforts to protect their local environment.

Through community forums and

the For the Love of Water (FLOW)

Symposium, tribal members, elders, and

conservation partners came together to

build a watershed-based plan aimed at

safeguarding local water resources for

future generations.

For the Ho-Chunk people, water is not

merely a natural resource; it is a living

entity and a sacred relative. Culturally,

the origin stories of the tribe are deeply

intertwined with local waterways. During

the FLOW Symposium, Winnebago

Tribal Member and Water Resource

Board Member Kellie Snow shared

traditional knowledge highlighting the

sacred responsibilities of tribal clans.

Traditional Ho-Chunk teachings dictate

a deep reciprocity with nature, passing

down the belief that human spirits come

from the water and return to the water

when they pass away, the Cycle of Life.

The FLOW Symposium featured

presentations by JEO Consulting,

Papio-Missouri River NRD, Iowa

Environmental Council, and a live visual

representation from Natural Resources

Conservation Services displaying the

relationship to water quality and soil

quality. The Winnebago Reservation is

divided across two primary watersheds:

the Blackbird Soldier watershed and the

Logan Creek watershed. The community

relies heavily on shallow sand and gravel

aquifers, specifically the Missouri River

aquifer and the Dakota sandstone aquifer.

Because surface actions directly affect

this shallow groundwater, the EPD Water

Quality Team routinely tests 12 localized

sites, including nine streams, a pond, a

lake, and the Missouri River, monitoring

for parameters like pH, turbidity, nitrates,

metals, and phosphorus.

Community members and

environmental experts have identified

several pressing ecological threats to

these areas which include agricultural

runoff, upstream industrial pollution, and

siltation and damaged infrastructures.

High levels of nitrates from industrial

farming fertilizers, alongside pesticide

and herbicide drift, represent the single

largest looming threat to Nebraska’s

groundwater. Agricultural runoff

contamination compromises both safe

drinking water and the safety of wild

medicine plants like mahinč (cattails).

Heavy pollution from commercial

factories and coal plants just north of

the reservation in Woodbury County

represents a major point of concern.

Airborne chemical fallout and industrial

discharge heavily impact regional

lung health and regularly seep into

surface waters with upstream industrial

pollution. Flooding events along the

Missouri River have consistently

deposited heavy sediments into local

bodies like H Lake, harming fish habitats

and decreasing mature fish populations.

Concurrently, historic water structures

at Samson Springs and Hensley Springs

face continuous structural damage and

heavy algae growth.

In response to these challenges, the

tribe is aggressively pursuing structural

restorations, stricter sovereignty codes,

and regional partnerships. To restore

community recreational spaces, the

tribe recently purchased a half-milliondollar dredger to remove sand and silt

from H Lake so families can safely

swim. Plans are also underway for the

multi-phase Kelly Pond Project, which

aims to stabilize shorelines, clean fallen

timber, restore the western wetlands,

and build safe walking trails for local

neighborhoods. EPD has also deployed

continuous 15-minute data loggers and

specialized algae sensors at Kelly Pond

to send out automated public safety alerts

during harmful blooms.

Beyond physical restoration, the

community is looking toward longterm legislative and legal battles to

cement tribal sovereignty over their

environment. The tribe is currently

locked in litigation to regain direct

management assets of their water

systems. Looking ahead, leaders are

aiming for federal “primacy” status

to secure absolute legal say over all

water within reservation boundaries.

Tribal advocates are also exploring the

integration of Rights of Nature directly

into the Winnebago Tribal Code, legally

establishing that the land and water

possess inherent rights to exist, thrive,

and be protected.

Through collaboration with federal,

state, and academic partners, including

the USDA, Ducks Unlimited, and the

University of Nebraska, the Winnebago

Tribe is ensuring that the community

remains fully educated, organized, and

prepared to fight for its homeland. As

tribal leaders noted, the path forward is

about building a better, cleaner world

for future generations so that the water

feeding both the people and the land

remains pure.

WHF Announces 2026 Scholarship Recipients

Winnebago, NE - The Winnebago Health Foundation is proud to announce

the recipients for the 2026 Foundation Scholarships. These winners have

demonstrated outstanding academic achievements, community involvement,

and a strong commitment to their future careers. These scholarships aim to support their educational journeys and empower them to contribute significantly to

the Winnebago community.

Tyresha Romero (Wayne State College)

As an enrolled member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, Tyresha Romero

is currently pursuing her Master of Business Administration (MBA) with an

emphasis in Leadership. She has actively served her community through work

on the Pow Wow Committee, Tribal Housing Committee, and Enrollment Committee, where she currently serves as Vice-Chairwoman. Tyresha is dedicated to

strengthening her leadership skills to continue serving the Winnebago Community, with the long-term goal of advancing into leadership roles that support

community growth and development.

Anpao Petite-Fowler (Nebraska Indian Community College)

As an enrolled member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, Anpao Petite-Fowler is currently pursuing a degree in business, with an employee

healthcare focus, at Nebraska Indian Community College. She is an entrepreneur and founder of Mani Petite LLC and the Joe Painter Foundation, where

she is developing a 20-unit assisted living and behavioral health facility focused

on culturally grounded care for Native Communities. Anpao’s goal is to create

a local healthcare solution that keeps Winnebago Community Members close to

home.

Audreianna Levering-Galvin (Wayne State College)

As an enrolled member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, Audreianna Levering-Galvin is currently pursuing a degree in Human Services at Wayne State

College. She holds an

associate’s degree in human services and is dedicated to continuing her education. Audrienna actively contributes to the Winnebago community, including

being a Qualified Expert Witness in Indian Child Welfare (ICWA) cases and a

certified facilitator for the

Fatherhood & Motherhood is sacred programs. Her long-term goal is to integrate cultural awareness and traditional healing practices into healthcare for

generations to come.

Mia Regalado (Western Iowa Tech Community College)

As an enrolled member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, Mia Regalado is

currently pursuing an Associate of Applied Science in EMS Paramedic. She is

actively training to become an EMT and is committed to advancing her education in emergency medical services. Mia aims to build a career that strengthens

the health and safety of the Winnebago community.

Sinya Harlan (Little Priest Tribal College)

As an enrolled member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, Sinya Harlan is

currently pursuing a business degree. She is actively engaged in her community through working with the Big Voice radio station, where she connects with

community members. Sinya is

passionate about using media to strengthen community engagement and looks

forward to future opportunities to collaborate with WCHS.

Sadie Littlethunder (Little Priest Tribal College)

As an enrolled member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, Sadie Littlethunder is currently pursuing a degree in Indigenous Health Science, while

also working toward her CNA Certification. She has actively been involved in

cultural, youth, and community programs. Sadie is dedicated to a career in nursing and aspires to join WCHS, where she can help improve healthcare through

compassionate, patient-centered care.

Anna Berridge (UNMC College of Public Health)

As an enrolled member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, Anna Berridge is

currently pursuing graduate-level studies in Health Administration. She previously earned her

Bachelor of Science from Creighton University, where she balanced full-time

work while completing her degree. Anna is committed to advancing equitable,

community-centered healthcare systems and developing leadership capabilities

to strengthen health outcomes for the Winnebago Community.

Amanda Sanem (Post University)

As an experienced Registered Nurse, Amanda Sanem is currently pursuing

her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). She has worked across many different settings, including inpatient, wound and infusion, primary care, and supporting dialysis patients. Amanda’s long-term goal is to support expanded dialysis

services at WCHS, while continuing to

provide exceptional care.
