Our masthead for this issue features the
icon representing the Buffalo Clan / Cexji
Hikikarac. The Buffalo Clan held many functions within the tribe. Most notably they held
the responsibility of acting as town-criers to
the Chief, carrying out and reporting decisions and instructions in the Four Directions.
They were orators for the people, assisted
in law and order, and acted as intermediary
between the chief and his people. The Buffalo Clan is one of the eight Earth clans. For the
HoChunk people, the land and the buffalo
are inter-related, and the land is associated
with the Four Directions. Families within the
Buffalo Clan include: Snow, Frenchman,

[Winnebago, NE] On Tuesday, November
12th, 2024, Winnebago was visited by the
U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary,
Deb Haaland. The trip to Winnebago was
kept under wraps to allow the Secretary
to come to Winnebago with a minimal staff
contingent and was not announced to the
general public until that morning. “We are
extremely honored and excited to host Secretary Haaland.” Winnebago Tribal Council
Chairwoman, Victoria Kitcheyan stated.
Secretary Haaland is the first Indigenous
person to serve in a Presidential Cabinet
position. A member of the Pueblo of Laguna
in New Mexico, Haaland was appointed as
Interior Secretary by President Joe Biden
in 2020 following his sweeping election.
Prior to the appointment as head official
for the Department of the Interior, Haaland
was elected to Congress, representing her
district from the great State of New Mexico.
At a reception held during her visit she addressed the capacity crowd stating, “I am
extremely honored to be here and accept
the invitation of the [Winnebago] tribe.”
The Secretary spent several hours in
Winnebago beginning her day as part of the
group witnessing the bison release that was
previously scheduled in coordination with
the Winnebago Wildlife & Parks Department
and the Inter-Tribal Buffalo Council. Several
new buffalo were introduced to the Tribe’s
existing bison herd early that morning. “We
have witnessed something monumental. It
was exciting, breathtaking, and humbling.”,
one on-looker said as the 13 new head of
bison stormed from their gates into the open
pasture.

Educare students took a local
field trip to the Little Priest Tribal College’s library. A storytelling group
from Chicago put on a play called
“Bookworm” for about 50 students.
[Winnebago Reservation] This month
of November saw the bison herd of the
Winnebago Tribe grow with the addition of
several new members to the tribe’s overall
head count. These 13 new bison came to
the Tribe from the Niobrara National Wildlife
Refuge. A release event was planned and
held at the rural pasture area located to the
East and North of the town of Winnebago.
“Today is a momentous occasion for the
people as we continue to open up the homelands back to our four-legged relatives.”,
said one member of the Inter-Tribal Buffalo
Council. That group was on-hand to witness
the release of the new members of the herd.
Alongside the ITBC, U.S. Department of
the Interior Secretary, Deb Haaland, was
also onsite for the momentous occasion.
Haaland commented, “I’m so honored to
be with you as we celebrate the expansion
of the Winnebago tribe’s bison herd, which
for generations has endured, thanks to the
dedication of many people throughout the
decades.”
The day’s events were jampacked with
activity. The bison release began those
events in grand style. Local drum group
New Breed sang honor songs as the herd

The Tribal Council hosted a reception for the Secretary and her staff inside the Veteran’s
building at Veteran’s Memorial Park. Winnebago’s Dual Language Class also attended
the day’s activities, offering prayers and well wishes to the new bison and the visiting
dignitaries. The Secretary was joined by members of her staff and Assistant Secretary
Bryan Newland. As Haaland addressed the crowd she made mention of the struggles that
tribal people have overcome and spoke of our perseverance in the face of adversity. “Our
efforts matter.”, she stated while remarking on the work done by tribal people to further
the interests of our nations.
Secretary Haaland is the first Cabinet member to visit the Winnebago Reservation
since the pandemic. Her presence indicates the dedication the Biden Administration
has toward Indian people, not just with our inclusion in policy making, but also through
self-determination. Winnebago tribal member, Ann Marie (O’Gorman) Bledsoe-Downes,
who is Deputy Solicitor for the Department of the Interior’s Indian Affairs Bureau was also
in attendance. She [Bledsoe-Downes] has served with the U.S. government for many
years, most currently under President Biden, but also served under President Obama.
The Winnebago Tribe was honored to host Secretary Haaland and her staff. The meeting
culminates years of cooperation and coordination among the sovereigns under the auspices
of growing our tribal footprint through the addition of 13 new bison and speaking of how
we have no intention of going backward in any of our joint efforts. Thank you for coming
to Winnebago, Secretary Haaland. May our trailblazing work clear the path into our future.

became united. Both Chairwoman, Victoria Kitcheyan, and Vice-Chairman, Isaac Smith,
spoke at the release event, offering comments about how impactful the day was. “We share
our gratitude with all who had a hand in making today happen. Not only those working
today, but also those who’ve been involved since our beginnings.” Kitcheyan told the crowd.
The visual of watching the bison race for the open grasslands was a spectacle indeed.
Transported to the Winnebago Reservation via small livestock trailers, when the gates were
opened the buffalo bolted toward their new home here. One observer said, “I’ve never
seen anything like this in person. The way they stampeded into the prairie was a kind of
homecoming I thought I’d never see. It was very, very moving!”
Later, at a reception planned for the Secretary’s visit, Haaland told the capacity crowd,
“Of all the losses this continent has suffered the destruction of the great plains is among
it’s darkest. When the federal government began its conquest of indigenous peoples, it
surmised that the quote ‘Indian problem’ [c]ould be solved by destroying our food sources
and our livelihoods. The near desecration of sacred bison herds across our nation’s prairie
grasslands was an intentional attempt to eradicate native peoples across our country.”
Secretary Haaland went on to address the Tribal Council and gathered crowd of tribal
members, “our efforts matter. [O]ur efforts mean that these beautiful creatures have a
fighting chance.” A member of the Pueblo Laguna [New Mexico] people herself, Haaland
is the first Indigenous person to serve in any Presidential cabinet. Appointed by President
Joe Biden in 2020 she has served as Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior.
She was accompanied by Assistant Secretary Bryan Newland and several staff members.
Haaland continued to comment, “[b]ison are resilient. Because native peoples are resilient.
Because the Winnebago tribe is resilient. We aren’t going anywhere.”

Wildlife & Parks Staff.

In Re:
I.E (Born 04/2007)
“Use these words to lift up hearts”
‘Use these words to lift up each other’s hearts.’ What words lifts up hearts
that are troubled or broken? Where
does one find them? I will answer these
questions in time.
Recently I learned that people who
post videos on tic-tock or other social
media post the thrill at the start of the
video for a few seconds and then the
video that leads up to that thrill is played.
It is like watching a television show or
a movie that begins with the climax and
then flashes back to what leads to that
point. Both of these approaches attempt
to have one intrigued so that they will
watch the whole video.
In our lives, we seldom consider the
climax of what is to come. That climax
will no doubt come. We are not able
to stop it. And what is to come? The
climax of one’s life is when one meet
one’s Maker.
For those of us left behind as one falls
asleep we are often overwhelmed with
grief. At times, it seems that nothing will
comfort our broken heart.
We are often in doubt what will happen once we take our final breath. Will
we live on after our hearts stops beating? No one that I know has come back
from death in my lifetime. So I have no
first hand knowledge of what to expect.
Some teach that when one dies he/
she returns to the dust of the earth, from
which Adam and Eve were formed.
Some teach if one is evil - that wicked
individual will never be content or satisfied in the next world; others teach that
such evil people will be annihilated!
There are others who say that eventually everyone will end up in paradise.
Some teach that one has to dwell in a
long term ‘time out’ or ‘penalty box’ in
By: Pastor Ricky Jacob
order to suffer for his/her misdeeds but
will enjoy paradise at a much later date.
There are still others who teach that
where one ends up, living in paradise
with Creator, His Son and the angels depends on whether your good outweighs
the bad. If one falls for this teaching
then one will live in despair wondering
whether he or she has done enough?
Or one will live with a what’s the use attitude since there is no way to make up
for one’s past rebellious wo-wonk ways.
All of these above ways of thinking
are not based on God’s Sacred Word.
They come from man’s way of reasoning
and/or the lies of the devil.
So now we come to the climax of
one’s life - when Jesus the ‘Honored
Chief’ will return. We read from the
Apostle Paul’s first letter to the church
of the Thessalonians:
‘What we are telling you comes from
the words of our Honored Chief. We
who remain alive until his coming will
not come face to face with him ahead
of the ones who have walked on. For
our Honored Chief himself will come
down from the spirit-world above with
a war cry. The voice of the chief spirit-messenger will join with him, and the
eagle bone whistle will sound. First, the
ones who died trusting in [Chief] (the
Anointed One) will rise. Then, together
with them, we who have remained alive
will be taken up into the clouds to meet
our Honored Chief in the air. Then we
will always be with him. Use these words
to lift up each other’s hearts’ [1st Thessalonians 4:15-18 1st Nations Version
[slightly altered].
Here we see the glory of Christ Jesus’
victorious return - the climax of one’s
life. Having visualized this we can travel
down life’s journey with uplifted hearts!

Question of the Issue:
With the Thanksgiving holiday approaching, what are
you grateful for this holiday season?
EDITOR'S MOVIE REVIEW:
TRANSFORMERS ONE
“More Than Meets the Eye"
Garan: I will start my answer with a quote “Being thankful and not express-
ing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” – William Arthur Ward. That
made sense to me, so I am thankful to be blessed with my job, family and
friends.
Brian: There have been many changes for me this past year, even the past
4 years. Being grateful for many things comes easy, especially for things like
my family, my health, and being surrounded by good music, good food, and
good conversations. … oh and, Nebraska volleyball! #GBR I’ll leave you with
a favorite quote: “Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have
into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger
into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and
creates a vision for tomorrow.” - Melody Beattie
Tyler: I’m thankful for the memories I’ve made with my son and family this
past year. As I get older, I realize that making memories together is what
makes me happy.
Kevin: I’m thankful for my family and friends.
Christina: I am thankful for my health and my supportive friends and family.
There’s really a lot to be thankful for but we’ll be here all day listing them.
Bethani: I am most grateful for my family; they keep me going. I’m grateful
for my boys, they bring all the love & light to my life. I’m grateful for my friends,
my health, my career, & can’t forget to mention my fur baby Yoda! There are
just so many reasons to be grateful, I could go on & on. As said by Eckhart
Toll, “acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance.” <3

When the world came to know
the Transformers back in the early
to mid-1980s, they took the world of
toys by storm. Action figures were
now transformed into a combination
of vehicles, weapons, and other
cool items using the ingenious
engineering that gave their young
owners both. For the first time beloved toys could be morphed into
two separate worlds. Happy to say,
I was part of that revolution. The
Hasbro / TOMY toy line grew from
a modest first offering into a whole
genre of subsequent groupings
that just kept going and going.
Originating in Japan, the brainchild
of Shoji Kawamori took on a life of
its own. The Transformers reached
America and took the rest of the
world from there. Now more than
40 years later the iconic toy-line
continues with the latest feature
film – Transformers One.
Taking the step to return to full
animation, Paramount Studios
planned the movie nearly a decade
ago. Story writers were hired, movie
directors were courted, and actors
were discussed with a wide range
of options for the lead characters.
With the natural slowdown caused
by the world-wide pandemic, this
film was finally set for release in the
late summer of 2024. Opening to
worldwide success, first debuting
in Australia, Transformers One has
paced box office sales globally,
making it the latest in the string of
hits for the franchise. Along with
the totally awesome 80s era toys
there was a library of comic books.
These stories have served as the
basis for the long-lived saga of the
Transformers. The 2024 release of
Transformers One is just the latest
in the popular lineage using that
storyline.
Beginning as a prequel to all
the other stories, both animated
and live-action, Transformers One
returns us to the planet Cybertron.
The Primes, who were the de facto Titans of the living mechanical
world have all but disappeared,
save one. Sentinel Prime is the
sole survivor of the original race of
Transformers. Their society has lost
the all-important Matrix of Leadership. The loss creating havoc
amongst the remaining residents of
Cybertron as their source of energy, Energon, has stopped flowing.
KWTN 100.9 FM
The Official Radio Station of the
Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska
The story begins with two pals in
the sub-race of robots working in
the mines that seek their precious
Energon. The hijinks of the pair
give the whole movie a buddy-flick
feel. Soon however the plot twists to
force them both into the spotlight.
The main characters are voiced
by Marvel movie icons, Chris
Hemsworth, and Scarlett Johansson,
who are joined by Keegan-Michael
Key, Brian Henry, Steve Buscemi,
Jon Hamm, and Matrix star, Lawrence Fishburne.
At first the story lumbers along in a
non-thrilling way. The layout seemed
typical, and I was afraid the usual
bite of conformity would sink its teeth
into this movie. But once the ample
introduction is complete, the characters take on the lives of their writers’
imaginations and the absolute state
of the art CGI animation begins to
engage. The imagination within the
story is bold enough to keep the
characters fresh, while also giving
them a growing depth – a characteristic often missing from most action
movie animations. The deviation in
the pathways of the pair of friends
isn’t hidden, but the way it unfolds
is quite unexpected, and I’ve been
watching this franchise for decades.
Meaning to reignite the franchise,
Transformers One tells a great original story, that ultimately sets up the
yet untold sequels. Watching the new
take on legacy driven characters,
like Megatron and StarScream was
a real delight. They also had good
scenes with my personal favorite,
Soundwave. Yes, the cassettes make
their appearance too. The cast’s
jokes landed when they needed
to and didn’t seem overly corny.
The hierarchy of what we all knew
from the other movies, comics, and
animation series is established perfectly. The birth of both the Autobots
and the Decepticons comes to be
known, and yes there is a gem in the
after-credits, so keep watching until
the very end.
Overall, Transformers One does
its franchise proud. Excellent CGI
animation. On our world-famous
HaazZaat scale I’m giving this One
an Energon cube dripping solid 4
Haazs. Prime popcorn gorging fun!
Go see this one, even if you’ve never
seen any of the others. I can’t wait to
see the next episodes.
