Closure of Dollar General in Winnebago Calls for Community Support

[Winnebago, NE] The Winnebago

Tribal Council recently addressed the

community following the temporary

closure of the local Dollar General due

to an electrical fire. Recognizing that

this loss, paired with rising fuel costs,

creates a significant burden, especially

for the elders and those with limited

transportation. Tribal leadership is

mobilizing resources across multiple

departments to ensure every household

maintains access to food, water, and

essential supplies.

To bridge the gap left by the store’s

closure, the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska

Transportation and Human Services

departments have launched community

grocery runs. Every Tuesday and Friday,

a shuttle will depart at 9:00 AM from the

Neola Walker Building, (located at 218

On May 5th, the 5th grade Dual

Language class, ESU1 Staff, and Mr.

Women/ Relatives and the families

affected. WPS students wore red in

remembrance. On May 4th, Red Sky

Nation also held their 5th annual

MMIR March in Sioux City, IA.

On April 18th, Ho-Chunk, Inc.

Access to clean water and affordable

food remains a top priority. A water

distribution event took place on Thursday,

April 30, and Friday, May 1, behind the

Blackhawk Community Center parking

lot. The WTN Procurement department

distributed two cases of water per

[Winnebago, NE] In the Ho-Chunk

tradition, Wazoki means kinship. It is a

word that carries the weight of history,

the warmth of family, and the promise of

a future where no mother or child walks

alone. Today, the Wazoki Program is

turning that ancient concept into modern

action, revitalizing Ho-Chunk culture

through maternal and child health.

The program recently celebrated

reaching a full team status. Each

member brings a unique connection to

the community and shares dedication to

the families they serve. Charisse Bass

(Project Coordinator) is a member of the

Winnebago Tribe, is from the Water Spirit

Clan, and has been with the program for

nearly two years. She is the daughter of

Jean Redhorn and Dan Owen. She views

Wazoki as a bridge between modern

healthcare and Ho-Chunk traditions,

focusing on bringing ceremonies back to

the birthing journey.

Mimike Dolezal (Doula/Case Manager)

is a member of the Winnebago Tribe,

a member of the Bear Clan, and is the

first point of contact for mothers in the

program. Since starting in February, she

has already enrolled six mothers, acting

as the vital link between families and

their doulas. Nannette Cline (Doula) is

an enrolled member of the Omaha Tribe,

from the Bear Clan, and the daughter

of Idelle Freemont and Henry Cline.

Nannette provides hands-on support for

mothers before, during, and after birth.

Shalise Cline (Doula) is also enrolled in

the Omaha Tribe, a member of the Bear

Clan, and is the sister of Nannette. Shalise

recently transferred from the Cherishing

Families program; she brings a wealth of

experience in family dynamics to her new

role as a doula. Aaliah Curry (Doula) is an

enrolled member of the Winnebago Tribe,

from the Bear Clan, and daughter of Alicia

Whitebear and Aaron Curry. She has been

instrumental in the program’s recent event

planning, including the Autism Acceptance

walk/chalk, movie night.

This past April, Wazoki made history by

hosting the community’s first-ever Autism

Acceptance event. The team focused

on creating a space where families on

the spectrum felt truly seen. The event

featured a walk and chalk at the Land

of Wellness, where families gathered to

draw and walk together. To ensure the

environment was inclusive, the team

carefully planned for sensory sensitivities

which included bubbles and glow sticks,

providing tactile and visual engagement.

A sensory-friendly movie screening was

held at the big screen to accommodate

those sensitive to loud noises. Local

mothers expressed deep gratitude, noting

that for many, it was the first time they felt

comfortable bringing their children to a

public event without fear of judgement or

sensory overload.

Wazoki’s reach extends beyond infancy.

The program is rolling out several “Safe

Sitter” courses to ensure safety across

all ages. The Safe Sitters course is for

6th graders and up to learn the basics

of childcare. They also offer Safe at

Home, this course is for 4th through 6th

graders staying home with siblings. A

special course for grandparents includes

a grandma/grandpa Refresher, helping

fresh produce and ground beef, including

eggs, milk, fresh fruit and vegetables, and

loaves of bread. Also located in Ho-Chunk

Village, a five-gallon water refilling

station is available at the HCI Distribution

Building. For a small fee, you can refill

your water containers from 8:00 AM to

12:00 PM, Monday through Thursday.

For those looking to save on travel,

there is an option to explore Walmart+

Grocery Delivery. This service provides

free delivery of essentials directly to

your door, and those receiving SNAP or

Medicaid may be eligible for membership

at a discount. Furthermore, WTN Food

Distribution is preparing to host a popup food pantry (dates to be announced).

Eligible residents who meet FDPRI

income guidelines and do not receive

SNAP can apply for regular assistance by

calling (833)568-5989.

While the community adapts, the

Winnebago Public Health Department

(WPHD) is working closely with

Dollar General’s corporate office. The

facility is undergoing strict remediation

and thorough cleaning. Tribal leaders

emphasized that the store will only reopen

once the Environmental Health team

conducts a comprehensive walk-through

and confirms the building meets all tribal

health and safety standards.

“During times like these, the strength

of the Winnebago people is most evident

in how we care for one another. We want

to extend our sincere appreciation to

those who have already stepped up to

help. We encourage everyone to continue

checking on your neighbors, relatives, and

especially our elders. Whether it’s sharing

a ride, picking up extra supplies, or simply

checking in, your effort to assist one

another makes a tremendous difference

while we work towards a solution.” Shared

in the statement by Winnebago Tribal

Council.

grandparents brush up on modern safety techniques. Dacia Gorrin (Administrative

Assistant/Training Officer) is in partnership with the Wazoki program to coordinate the

Safe Sitters course and helps with anything that is needed.

The Wazoki program is open to families living on the reservation. To qualify, the

mother or father must be an enrolled tribal member. To get started, reach out directly if

you are expecting or have a newborn. Family referrals are accepted; grandparents, aunties,

or uncles are encouraged to reach out on behalf of their loved ones. Connect with the

Wazoki program at the upcoming Health Fair on May 29, 2026, as they will have a booth

set up for recruitment information and to meet the team in person! For more information,

you can call (402)747-3950 or visit the Winnebago Comprehensive Healthcare System

website: www.wchs.health

As the program enters its second year, the focus remains on collaboration. By working

alongside WIC, the Public Health Nursing (PHN) team, and Cherishing Families, Wazoki

is ensuring a warm handoff of care as children grow. Whether it’s through music bingo,

elder portraits, or prenatal group classes, Wazoki is proving that when the community

comes together, it stays strong. For those living on the reservation, the program is an open

door to support, culture, and kinship.

PLEASE CALL BETHANI OR TYLER TO GET YOUR AD

PLACED IN THE NEXT WINNEBAGO INDIAN NEWSPAPER!

‘The Only True Comfort’

And you [singular] will say on that

day, “I will give thanks (to) you, O

YAHWEH, [Hebrew: Creator God] for

(although) you were angry at me, your

anger has turned back, and you have

comforted me” [Isaiah 12:1 Andrew

Bartelt translation]!

‘On that day’ - you might be

wondering - on which day? I do not

think that Isaiah is referring to one and

only one day. Time and time again, we

have lived our lives in direct opposition

to Creator God and to walking in His

ways, doing His will.

Time and time again, Creator God

becomes angry with you and with me.

We should on a daily basis come to Him

humbly and repent of our sin. We are

encouraged to gather with other brother

and sisters in Christ and enter in one of

Creator God’s houses each week.

When one comes to the realization of

his or her sin - and how angry Creator

God is with you and with me - one

should give thanks that Creator God

is merciful. Since we heard the Good

News from Isaiah: ‘and you have

comforted me.’

Isaiah lived and served Creator God

as one of His prophets from about 742

to 690 BC. It was in 722 BC, during

his days, that the Assyrians would

descend upon the ten northern tribes of

Israel and massacre them. Those who

survived were taken into captivity and

intermarried with people of various

nations; as well as Assyrian captives

of other nations would be driven to

the land of Samaria (northern Israel).

It appeared that there would be no

reason to comfort a people who had

worshipped false gods, idols and even

sacrificed their own children.

And yet, did you hear the words that

Isaiah proclaimed about Creator God’s

anger being turned back. In fact, while

Creator God’s anger was turned back

from punishing you and me, it came

down unmercifully upon His one and

only Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus endured

the FULL FORCE of the WRATH

of God as he completed his combat

By: Pastor Ricky Jacob

mission. Jesus, the spiritual warrior that

he was, gave the ultimate in order that

those who believe in him would be set

free.

This is what Isaiah goes on to write:

“Here is the God of my salvation. I will

trust and not fear! For my strength and

[my] protection is YAHWEH! And he

has become my salvation” [Isaiah 12:2

Andrew Bartelt translation].

‘My strength and my protection’ sure

sounds like a warrior to me. Jesus is

the one in whom one has the blessed

assurance and the true comfort of

salvation. It is not up to you or to me. It

is whether one has a relationship with

one’s Creator.

Now when it comes to one’s

relationship with Creator God is to

place one’s faith in Him and in the

One he sent, Jesus our Warrior Savior.

You should realize that one is either

walking with Jesus leading as a Warrior

Shepherd; or you are going against

Creator God. When one rebels against

one’s parents, or those in authority, then

one is also going against Creator God.

When one lies, or steals, or covets, or

has malice or envy, then one is going

against Creator God’s will.

Such rebellious ways - although

allowed by Creator God - does not ever

bring one to find comfort or peace.

It is the opposite - when one in his

or her independence - that is allowed

by Creator God - one will never find

comfort.

When one is overwhelmed by

anger, or by grief, or by heart ache,

or brokenness - seeking comfort in

anything outside of God’s mercy and

grace will only add to one’s insecurity,

anger, emptiness, despair and turmoil.

On the other hand, Isaiah points

you and me to the only source of

true comfort. This comfort comes as

one draws near to Creator God. The

good news is that Creator God offers

His comfort in spite of our past. This

only true comfort is a blessing that is

extended to you and received through

faith in Jesus the Savior of all those who

trust in him.

Question of the Issue:

April showers bring May flowers.” They say to give

people their flowers while we still can. Who would you

like to give flowers to and why?

GARAN: I’m giving flowers to every mom I know. They spend years making sure we

don’t ‘wilt’ right? Happy Mother’s Day!

KEVIN: If I could give flowers to anyone, it would be my mother Mary LeedonMcKeegan. I haven’t seen her alive since January 11, 1989. More than anything, I’d

want to give her a big bear hug and just hear her voice one more time. She was my

everything growing up — my biggest supporter, my motivator, the person who always

knew exactly what to say when life got heavy. Her talks didn’t just sound good… they

hit my soul and stayed with me long after the conversation ended. I still remember her

graduation speech, I wasn't doing well my senior year and wasn't going to graduate she

told me the only thing she ever wanted from me was to graduate high school, she said I

don't care what else it is you do, I just want you to graduate for me.

I ended up getting a scholarship to DWU in Mitchell, SD, and played football for

them. Even though I didn't play much, she only missed one game, but my stepdad was

able to make it to that one.

CHRISTINA: Well of course my mother, she always enjoys when people bring her

flowers.

BETHANI: I am giving two sets of flowers, to my two little brothers, Bradley and

Bronson Redhorn. Growing up, my mom would always stress being here for each

other and having eachothers backs. As adults, I could not be more thankful that we do

just that. They held me up during the hardest times of my life, I will forever have the

most love and respect for them. They have blessed me with the most amazing nieces

and nephews, they’re the best Tegas to my boys Ethan & Frank. They’ve been through

so much in their lives and they deserve the best, I am proud of the men they are today

and I am so grateful I get to be their cool big sister! =)

TYLER: Since it’s almost Mother’s Day, I would like to give flowers to all mothers

and guardians. Taking care of children is a job in itself and sometimes a little

recognition means the world! <3

GAYLA:I’m giving my flowers to all the Indigenous students and graduates out there:

college, high school, junior high, preschool, vocational/technical school. Navigating

colonial systems while dealing with struggles at home, intergenerational trauma, and

the pressure of being a cycle breaker is not easy. Every diploma and certificate earned

by our people represents resilience, survival, and perseverance. When I graduated

high school, my Cōka, a Hōcąk veteran, gifted me an eagle feather. At the time, I

didn’t feel deserving of it, but I understand now that navigating school as wą̄kšik is its

own kind of battle worth honoring.

Seeing our Indigenous youth and adults continue striving for a better future makes me

incredibly proud and hopeful for the generations coming after us.

QUINCE: My answer to that question has an easy answer. I would definitely give

my dad, Greg Bass Sr., my flowers. I’d rather have my dad see and receive some rare

but beautiful flowers. He’s planted hundreds of thousands of flowers in his lifetime to

make our community and his home a pretty place to see with your own eyes. Not to

mention, he has an obsession with bringing my mom fresh bouquets of flowers. I feel

he deserves the best of the best.

WCHS Strengthens Emergency Preparedness Through

Trainings

By: Halle Murray, Marketing Specialist

Winnebago, NE – Winnebago Comprehensive Healthcare System (WCHS) recently took part in emergency preparedness

trainings aimed at strengthening response

efforts. These trainings help ensure staff

stay up to date on best practices and are

prepared to respond effectively in emergencies, supporting overall community

health and safety.

Last week, over 30 employees participated in a Regional Medical Response Surge

Functional Exercise, placing teams in a realistic scenario involving civil unrest and a

sudden influx of patients. The exercise

focused on testing emergency response

plans and strengthening communication.

Departments also worked through simulated challenges such as staffing shortages,

security concerns, and resource management in a real-time environment.

This past month, WCHS also facilitated

a Hospital Decontamination workshop,

which combined virtual learning with

hands-on training. Participants gained

critical skills in

identifying hazardous materials exposure, properly using personal protective

equipment (PPE), and establishing decontamination zones. The training also included a live scenario where teams practiced

setting up decontamination equipment and

safely responding to mock patients in a

controlled environment.

“These trainings are essential to ensuring

our teams are ready to respond quickly

and effectively in high-pressure situations,”

said Jesse Padilla, WCHS Safety Officer.

“We are strengthening our collective ability

to respond to a wide range of emergency

scenarios.”

Both exercises highlight an ongoing

commitment to preparedness and patient

safety. By investing in these exercises,

WCHS continues to build a stronger, more

resilient healthcare system ready to respond

to a wide range of emergency scenarios.
