Winnebago, NE – Last Saturday, The
Winnebago Indians High School Football Team earned their way into the All
Nations Class A Championship Game.
This game was held at the Dakota Dome
in Vermillion, South Dakota and was
against the #4 Ranked Todd County
Falcons.
After 4 quarters of action, the Winnebago Indians won with a score of
62-12 and earned all the awards which
included MVP Defensive Player, Javon
Price, MVP Offensive Player, Antrell
Harlan and the Jim Thorpe Award,
Zaiden Bernie.
The Indians came into this season
with a chip on their shoulder after losing
the spring season championship game
to Tiospa Zina.
The Shortened Spring Season?
Due to the pandemic it was decided
by the All-Nations league to have a
spring season to let the 2021 seniors
play. Some schools decided not to play
in the spring but Winnebago wanted to
test their skills in the 9-man football
realm. Traditionally, Winnebago plays
either 8-man football or 11 man. Some
of the South Dakota Athletic Directors
decided to start a league with only Native Nations high school football teams.
This would give them a chance to play
against each other and also develop
more interest amongst the high school
players. Winnebago launched a 9-man
offensive and defensive scheme that
worked from the start. Winnebago only
lost 2 games in the spring, both to TZ.
After the spring season ended, the
Indians only had about a month to rest.
The fall season would see more teams
enter the All Nations league and they
divided into Class A and Class B. Winnebago decided to go into Class A. “We
are the smallest Class A team in the
league by student population” said Head
Football Coach Adam James. “I think
it’s great because before we couldn’t
qualify for playoffs but now the boys
have something to play for”.
Indeed, the Winnebago team decided
early on that they would put the petal
to the medal and had the goal to win
the championship game.
“The only team that can beat us
is ourselves” said Junior Wide Receiver, Destin Vargas. That statement
proved true because of the 8 teams
that played against Winnebago, none
were able to win. The Indians went
undefeated and nobody came close
to beating them. It was a great statement by the Winnebago Indians to let
other league schools know that they
have arrived in the All Nations Football League. This historical season is
something that every tribal member,
every fan, and every player should be
proud of.

substance abuse, and help deal with
historical trauma through exploring
traditional cultural practices. By providing workshops in regalia, instruments, and tool making the goal is for
the program to become an outlet for
native youth empowerment. Additionally, a Ho-Chunk language component
will be introduced to support ownership in traditional ways. WPHD Mental

Kids 5-11 Vaccination
All kids 5 and older are now eligible to get vaccinated.
This is a safe and effective vaccine. It has undergone rigorous review, and
now has been authorized by FDA and recommended by CDC for kids ages 5-11,
after thorough testing for safety in thousands of children.
This is a landmark moment in our fight against the virus, one parents have
been eagerly waiting for – and it means 28 million kids ages 5 through 11 are
now eligible for the lifesaving protection of a vaccines.
The COVID-19 vaccine is the best way to keep your child safe.
The best way to protect your child against COVID-19, including the Delta
variant, is to get them vaccinated.
Kids are being infected with COVID-19, and some are getting seriously ill or
sadly even dying. Even if your child doesn’t get severely ill, they could face longterm health consequences or pass the virus to others.
Question of the Issue:
November is Native American Heritage Month.
What are you doing to recognize this?
If your child gets COVID-19, the negative health effects can be serious and
last months; but the most common side effect of the vaccine is a sore arm.
We know that many parents are trying to decide what is right for their child
and their family. If you have questions about your child and the COVID-19 vaccine, talk to a pediatrician, school nurse, or another trusted health care provider.
Finding a vaccine is easy, and getting vaccinated is free.
Vaccines are starting to arrive in locations across the country now as the
program ramps up. Starting the week of November 8, the vaccine for kids will be
available in more than 20,000 sites across the country, including thousands of
pediatricians and family doctors’ offices, pharmacies, community health centers,
children’s hospitals, and community-based sites and schools.
Parents will be able to find available vaccines at vaccines.gov or by contacting their health care provider or local pharmacy. Sites are beginning to upload
their inventories, and the updated vaccines.gov will be fully up and running by
the end of the week.
Vaccines help protect your child, your family, and your community.
15 million adolescents have already been vaccinated.

Personally, I am boycotting...I will
never attend an Atlanta Braves baseball game or Kansas City Chiefs NFL
game until they get rid of that stupid
chant called the tomahawk chop.
I watched in disbelief during the
opening ceremonies of a chief's game
when they sang the song "Lift Every
Voice and Sing", had people holding
hands and showed jerseys that said
end racism then right after the song
ended, they started the tomahawk
chop. So in the words of Jerry Maguire "Who's coming with me?"
I personally don’t have a specific thing
to do in the month to celebrate, I think
having Native American heritage is
using and practicing the traditions you
were taught & your own beliefs yearround. But in the future I would love
to participate in Rock Your Moccs Day!
When I was in high school at SouthSioux Native Americans were among
the smaller minority groups, so it was
cool seeing the few who did participate
stand-out on that day!
The vaccines offer lasting protection to prevent your child from getting infected
or, worse, having severe outcomes. The vaccine is more than 90% effective.
Getting vaccinated will help keep schools open, sports going, and help our
kids maintain a more normal lifestyle, thanks to the comfort and protection
provided by the vaccines.
Q&A:
Kids aren’t getting severely ill from COVID-19, so why do they need to get
vaccinated?
Kids are being infected with COVID-19, and some are getting seriously ill or
sadly even dying. Even if your child doesn’t get severely ill, they could face longterm health consequences.
The best way to protect your child against COVID-19, including any long-term
health effects it causes, is to get them vaccinated.
How should my kid get a vaccine?
Pfizer vaccine is available and recommended for everyone 5 and older. Parents
can get their child vaccinated at trusted vaccine providers.
We know that many parents are trying to decide what is right for their child
and their family. If you have questions about your child and the COVID-19 vaccine, talk to a pediatrician, school nurse, or another trusted health care provider.
Vaccines are starting to arrive in locations across the country now as the
program ramps up. Starting the week of November 8, the vaccine for kids will
be available in more than 20,000 sites across the country, and you will be able
to find available vaccines at vaccines.gov or by contacting your health care provider or a local pharmacy.
Can kids get any of the other vaccines?
Right now, Pfizer is the only vaccine authorized for kids ages 5 and up.

To recognize Native American Heritage Month, I am planning to dedicate
time in my daily life to learn more of
our Ho-Chunk language and practice
speaking it more regularly. I’d like to
be a fluent speaker one day just like
my Choka Ihler “Shorty” Redhorn
was.

Personally, I will be participating in
Rock Your Moccs Day as well as the
Hinuk Waje Day. As an employee
of HoChunk Renaissance, I will be
participating in some of the various
cultural activities they are co-hosting
with the Angel DeCora Museum.
How do we know this vaccine is safe for kids?
The vaccine has been through rigorous testing and thorough review by the FDA
and CDC, and is specifically formulated for kids ages 5 through 11. Thousands
of children were in the clinical trials that found the vaccine was more than 90%
effective at preventing COVID-19 with no real safety concerns.
What side effects might my child get?
The side effects for kids between 5-11 are largely the same as those for adults.
The most common is a sore arm.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
20 Years of Service
JESUS OUR SAVIOR
LUTHERAN OUTREACH
"I press on toward the goal"
Do you have any goals in life? People
have many goals in this world. Some set
out to get a good education - maybe to
be first in their family to obtain a college
degree. Others have set their plans to
obtain a scholarship in order to assist
in paying for that degree. Others have
plans to enlist in one of the branches
of the military - like many of their relatives who had gone on before them. A
few set their goal on marrying the love
of their life and to have a family so that
they can live happily ever after. These
are good goals but should not be the
ultimate goal.
Many think that life in this world is all
there is - so they live for today and the
hell with tomorrow. They live for today
and don't consider the consequences
of their actions - especially on others.
Now how about for the Christian.
What is the goal of a Christian? The ultimate goal for a Christian is out of this
world! Paul urges Christians to press on
toward the goal of receiving life everlasting in the new heavens - in paradise.
Paul writes to the saints at Philippi:
'Not that I have already obtained all this,
[i.e. the righteousness of God] or have
already been made perfect, but I press
on to take hold of that for which Christ
Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do
not consider myself yet to have taken
hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting
what is behind and straining toward
what is ahead, I press on toward the
goal to win the prize for which God has
called me heavenward in Christ Jesus'
(Philippians 3:12-14 NIV).
On October 31st, at Jesus Our Savior
Lutheran Church, we heard the Good
News that one is saved by grace alone,
through faith alone, found in Scripture
alone which points to Christ alone. To
The Winnebago Tribe would like to congratulate Mary Merrick for 20 years
of service! She has helped and supported the HoChunk Renaissance Language
Department and the WTN Enrollment department over the years. On November
10th her co-workers had a surprise luncheon and gifted her a blanket & plaque.
Thank you Mary, for your service to the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska. Currently she serves as a HoChunk Renaissance Language Instructor.
God alone be all glory. That is awesome
Good News!
In the above reading Paul is now
challenging the Christian to press on
toward the goal. It sounds like it is back
up to him. However, Paul is not saying
that you must play a role in your salvation. No, he is saying that you can turn
your back on God and join the enemies
of the cross. You have that freedom heaven forbid! He is saying that with
the assistance of the Holy Spirit you
can strive to hold on to your faith and
to walk in God's ways.
Why do I refer to enemies of the
cross you might wonder? Paul goes on
to write: 'Join with others in following
my example, brothers, and take note of
those who live according to the pattern
we gave you. For, as I have often told
you before and now say again even with
tears, many live as enemies of the cross
of Christ. Their destiny is destruction,
their god is their stomach, and their
glory is in their shame. Their mind is
on earthly things' (Philippians 3:17-19).
If we are honest, we all have lived
our lives as enemies of the cross. For
the Christian we have turned from
these ways and turned back to God.
Paul urges us to forget what is behind.
Do not be overwhelmed by your past
waywardness. Jesus has paid with His
blood for your sin. Rather press on to
live your life in the way of honoring
your Creator.
I close with these words of Paul: 'But
our citizenship is in heaven. And we
eagerly await a Savior from there, the
Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power
that enables him to bring everything
under his control, will transform our
lowly bodies so that they will be like
his glorious body' (Philippians 3:20-21).
Our goal truly is out of the world and is
ours through faith in Jesus our Savior!

Kathleen Cue, Nebraska Extension Horticulture Educator in Dodge County
November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month
The Black Walnut Tree
Billy is 18 years old. He’s
a senior in high school, plays
sports, and has lots of friends.
He doesn’t think about it but he’s
in the prime of his life. He feels
he can do anything, he’s invulnerable, indestructible with no
thought for the future. Billy is
offered a cigarette from a buddy.
He takes it. He wants to be part
of the group, to fit in, to be cool,
to show he’s an adult. His buddy
hands him a lighter……
Billy is now 63 years old and at
the doctor’s office getting checked
out for some breathing problem
he’s been ignoring. Billy’s wife
sits with him. She looks after
him and made him see the doctor today. The Doctor enters with
the test results in hand. He sits
down with Billy and his wife, “I’m
sorry Billy, but you have stage
4 lung cancer.” Billy, shocked,
looks to his wife. The fear he
sees in her eyes suddenly made
it feel real to him. He turns back
to the doctor, “But, I quit smoking 15 years ago”. The doctor
nods saying, “Yes, I know, but
you smoked nearly a pack a day
for 30 years before that. Add to
that any second hand smoke,
indoor and outdoor air pollution,
radon, industrial and household
chemicals - they all add up over
a lifetime, Billy”. As the Doctor
continues to talk, Billy’s mind
races, “I didn’t know. I didn’t
realize”. His plans for retirement
vanished in his mind. Now what
will it be? Have my last year’s
been reduced to endless treatments, surgery, and medication?
What about the medical costs?
What will happen to my wife? My family? He hears the Doctor
still talking and refocuses on the
conversation….
…..Cigarettes alone contain
thousands of chemicals, where
at least 70 are known to cause
cancer. Tobacco companies add
menthol to make cigarettes seem
less harsh and more appealing to
new smokers and young people.
Menthol cigarettes are not less
harmful. They are just as dangerous as non-menthol cigarettes.
Together with the added Nicotine
produces the effects in the brain
that people are looking for and
gets you hooked. Then all the
chemicals you inhale and don’t
realize it. Things like Tar, hydrogen Cyanide, Formaldehyde, lead,
Arsenic, Ammonia, Polonium-210,
Benzene, Carbon monoxide and
so many-many more. All that
bombards your lungs with each
and every puff. This assault on
your lungs and body has so many
side effects that show up slowly
over time. Your skin ages faster.
Increases the feeling of stress and
anxiety from the nicotine induced
release of adrenaline and increasing the heart rate. Makes it
harder to fall asleep, causes vision
and eye problems like cataracts,
macular degeneration, and loss
of night vision. Smoking shortens your life. One study done by
the University of Bristol, England
gives a statistic that each cigarette
you smoke reduces your lifespan
by 11 minutes. How many cigarettes do you think you smoked
in your life, Billy?.... Billy?.....
Billy?.....
A Flash of light! – And Billy sits,
staring into the lighters flame. His
unlit cigarette wedged between his
lips. He blinks, snapping out of
his daydream. His buddy standing next to him, saying his name
again trying to hurry him up.
“Come on man, light that thing,
you’re wasting my lighter fluid”.
Billy blinks again, pulls the cigarette from his mouth and calmly
hands it back to his buddy, – “No
thanks man, I’m good”. His buddy
looks at him funny, shrugs and
says, “OK, whatever”. Billy sits
silently in his own thoughts, wondering if this one decision might
have just altered his future…….
~ Kurt Lyons - Air Quality, Winnebago Environmental Protection
Department.
Urban dwellers either praise or
curse the black walnut (Juglans
nigra). Some find the tree troublesome because of the nuts they drop,
the juglone (a natural herbicide)
secreted into the soil to kill nearby
plants, and the increased number of
squirrels in the neighborhood. Supporters of black walnut like the tree
because it is native, well adapted to
the precipitation and temperature
variations of Midwest weather, is
stately, grows valuable wood and
nuts, and provides food for wildlife.
No woodworker’s material commands higher values than black
walnut. It is not unusual for people
with a bit of underutilized land to
grow walnut trees, referring to the
eventual sale of the trees as their
“retirement fund”. It turns out that
black walnut rustling is a thing,
with thieves cutting down trees on
public and private lands, sometimes
in broad daylight, to sell to lumber
mills. Theft, unfortunately, centers
on the stately older trees.
Both the husks and hulls of black
walnut are used to make stains for
baskets and wood. Interestingly,
the wood of black walnut is already
a dark rich brown and requires no
stain.
Nuts of black walnut are delicious and nutritious but if you’ve
ever husked and cracked a black
walnut, only to be confronted by
multiple chambers inside, you’ll
know the tedium involved in getting the nutmeats out. Consider
growing one of the newer cultivars
trialed by UNL’s Professor emeritus
Dr. Bill Gustafson and available
through the Nebraska Nut Growers
Association (nebraskanutgrowers.
org). These newer varieties have
just two chambers inside the nut,
making it possible to remove the
nut in two large chunks.
A black walnut problem causing
tree mortality, thousand canker
disease (TCD), has foresters and
tree pathologists monitoring its
spread. This is a disease complex,
combining feeding by the walnut
twig beetle (Pityophthorus juglandis) with the canker-forming fungal pathogen Geosmithia morbida.
The walnut twig beetle carries the
fungal pathogen, unintentionally
inoculating trees as it feeds. The
Nebraska Department of Agriculture enacted an exterior state
quarantine of walnut in 2010
and presently, thousand canker
disease has not been found in
Nebraska. More information about
TCD can be found here: USDA
APHIS | Thousand Cankers Disease.

The Winnebago Tribal Council is 100% AGAINST Meth. Not only is Meth
harmful to the individual, it destroys families and our community. Meth
use is not the HoChunk/Winnebago way of life. On 12-30-19, during the

publish all meth related offenses occurring on the Winnebago reservation,
in the Winnebago Indian News.
