COMMUNITY
SUICIDE IN INDIAN COUNTRY PART 32
Knowing how others made it through can help you learn new ways to
recover from your own suicide attempt.
It’s estimated that more than one million people attempt suicide each year in
the United States, from all parts of society. In other words, you’re not alone.
However, it can be hard to know how other survivors recovered because
suicide is a personal topic that often is not discussed openly and honestly. This
can leave those affected feeling like they don’t know where to turn.
Shame, dreading the reaction of others, or fear of being hospitalized are
some of the reasons that prevent people from talking about suicide. This is
unfortunate, because direct and open communication about suicide can help
prevent people from acting on suicidal thoughts. Hopefully, reading about the
experiences of other survivors will make it easier for you to talk about your own
attempt, learn ways to keep yourself safe, know when to ask for help, and most
importantly, find hope as you think about what happens next on your journey.
It’s okay if you feel conflicting emotions right now. Other suicide attempt
survivors know that what you’re experiencing is normal. They understand that
your concerns are real. Going on won’t be easy, and finding a way to ease your
emotional pain may be challenging, but this can be a time to start down a new
path toward a better life—to start your journey toward help and hope.
Those who have recovered from a suicide attempt want you to know that:
You are not alone. You matter. Life can get better. It may be difficult, but
the effort you invest in your recovery will be worth it.
Right now, moving forward may seem impossible. And while it probably won’t
be easy, many other survivors will tell you that they’re glad they held on and
worked for a better life. By taking a few steps now, and then a few more when
you’re ready, you can regain your strength.
Sometimes it can be helpful just to take a few steps forward, even when you
don’t feel like it. In fact, you might start to remember that others care about you.
You might discover that suicide is not the only way to relieve your pain. You
may find that your feelings will change, either on your own or by working with a
counselor. You could wake up one day surprised to feel less pain than you do
today.
“Life became like an endurance test. That’s really how it felt. It felt like life was
an endurance test for me. And making it to the next day and to the next day
and to the next day was truly…it was just a fight for survival.”
“It felt like there was still a hole inside of me, and I couldn’t figure out why I had
a lack of motivation to get out of bed, why I was randomly crying. So when I
was 16, I was going to school with a mask on my face, acting and pretending
as though I was really happy with things that were going on around me.”
“I could not feel hope; I did not even care if things would get better; I was in
pain and I wanted it to stop, period.”
“I thought, well yeah, maybe, the family’s better off without me. So the entire
day this thought began to build and dwell and it escalated very quickly…and
when the pain got real bad I was going to do what I needed to do, not thinking
that they loved me.”

JESUS OUR SAVIOR
LUTHERAN OUTREACH
“Do not trust deceptive words”
“Reform your ways and your actions,
and I will let you live in this place. Do not
trust in deceptive words and say, “This
is the temple of YAHWEH, the temple of
YAHWEH, the temple of YAHWEH” ‘ [Jeremiah 7:3-4 NIV]!
The above words come from God’s
Sacred Word as spoken by YAHWEH, (the
Name that Creator God had given to Moses). They were spoken in love and truth to
those who had been deceived. They were
words of WARNING to those who foolishly
thought that they were God’s chosen
people and that they could get away with
MURDER, among other things including
stealing, sexual immorality and lying.
The above words apply also to those
who are deceived into thinking that merely
by attending an all night prayer service, or
a sweat, or a mass, or a worship or divine
service, that all is good between him or her
and one’s Creator. Many believe that no
one should judge their ways and actions
- including one’s Creator. Do not trust in
deceptive words.
YAHWEH continues, “If you really
change your ways and your actions and
deal with each other justly, if you do not
oppress the alien, the fatherless or the
widow and do not shed innocent blood in
this place, and if you do not follow other
gods to your own harm, then I will let you
live in this place, in the land I gave your
forefathers for ever and ever. But look, you
are trusting in deceptive words that are
worthless’ [Jeremiah 7:5-8 NIV].
Some promises of YAHWEH are conditional such as Him allowing the tribe of
Israel to continue to live in the promised
land. If you know the history of the tribe
of Israel then you know that YAHWEH
allowed them to be taken from their land.
Can there be lessons learned here that
apply to other tribal people?
Now take time to honestly reflect on
your own life and your motives. Do you
oppress those who don’t speak your
language, who have a different color of
skin, or who are of a different tribe? Do
you oppress or bully the fatherless - those
whose father had died or is not around to
protect or defend them? Do you oppress
the elderly, especially the widow who has
no husband to stand up for her?
Jesus, the Son of YAHWEH, is a friend
to one and to all. Jesus spoke to the Samaritan woman who had not led a virtuous
life, having been married to five men and
was living with a man she was not married to, (one of our Vacation Bible school
stories from John 4). This woman came to
trust in Jesus as the Messiah (the Christ),
God’s promised ‘anointed one.’ Jesus
would go on to suffer and die for her detestable ways, and not only her detestable
ways and deeds but also yours and mine
too. Jesus provided a way back to a good
relationship to one’s Creator through faith
in his bloody sacrifice.
We return one more time to YAHWEH’s
words, ‘ “Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury, burn incense to
Baal and follow other gods you have not
known, and then come and stand before
me in this house, which bears my Name,
and say, “We are safe”—safe to do all
these detestable things? Has this house,
which bears my Name, become a den of
robbers to you? But I have been watching!
declares YAHWEH’ [Jeremiah 7:9-11 NIV].
YAHWEH reminds the men of the tribe
of Judah on what basis He will judge them.
His standard is based on His Ten Words,
also known as the Ten Commandments.
There is not one man, woman or child
that has kept these commands perfectly.
None, that is, except the Son of God, Jesus
Christ. The Spirit of God brings one to faith
in Jesus’ saving work as he suffered and
died on a cross for the sin of one and all.
Jesus sacrifice was acceptable by
our Creator as he rose victoriously from
the dead. You too can join him in victory
through saving faith in Him. Then, by the
power of the Spirit of God, one is able to
amend or reform one’s despicable and
detestable ways and deeds.
Do not trust deceptive words, rather
trust in the Word of Creator God!
