Winnebago Village Installs New 911 GPS Addresses throughout Winnebago

On September 3rd, the Winnebago Senior

Center served a drive-thru brunch to the

community due to Winnebago Tribe going

on Labor Day holiday. Thank you to the

staff for preparing and handing out meals

to our community.

Keep an eye out for information about

the farmers market giving away fresh

produce again! Last Wednesday squash,

green & orange tomatoes were up for

grabs. Pictured above (to the left) is Stuart

Fischer & Blake Frenchman holding the

watermelon they had for sale. Produce

was grown locally with Tribal Farms!

On September 4th, the Boys and Girls

Club of The Hocak Nisoc Haci took their

youth to the Nebraska Huskers’ football

game in Lincoln, Nebraska! The Huskers

were playing the Fordhams Rams with

a final score of 7-52, Nebraska up! This

was a good experience for our youth to be

a part of a win like this in person. Thank

you to the Boys and Girls Club planning

and organizing this event. (Photo courtesy

Winnebago, NE--There has been a

lot of confusion and frustration in the

Winnebago community with the new

address changes.

This change has been in the works

for years, but it as of recently the community is seeing the change.

Back in 2000, the acting sheriff

and the board at that time decided to

have Thurston County update their

911 system. Unfortunately, none of

the communities in Thurston County

were involved in these decisions.

Throughout the years, this project

went through many departments but

stayed at a standstill. During 2011

through 2015 emergency managements started learning the new na-

tional GPS system.

The GPS system determined the new

addresses based upon the front door

and where the home is located on the

block. These updated addresses are

locked into the national grid. This is

the same system used in the entire

world.

The starting point for the new addresses begins on the Southside of

town which is the 100 block then

moves Northward into the 200 block

and 300 block.

The address changes were officially

approved by the Village Board in 2014

then approved by Tribal Council in

2015.

As of this year, the Village has been

putting up the new addresses.

In case of an emergency, emergency

services such as the fire department,

ambulance or police can find the location they are being called to, the GPS

system gives them the exact location.

Gene Gilpin the Village Street Tech

Supervisor said “it has been a work

in progress. Hopefully everyone understands that this has been years

in the making. We are trying to catch

up where this project was left off. The

Village staff would appreciate the communities’ patients and understanding

through this process. This is to help

the community.”

Winnebago Public School has introduced

a new team! This isn’t your regular sporting team you’re used to; it is Esports so it

focuses on competitive video games. This

is the Esports team first season competing. They will be playing various different

competitive video games over the course

of the year. The teams schedule is opening up to play Kearney Catholic.

Winnebago, NE—On September

10th, 11 vendors participated in the

local Farmers Market located at the

Ho-Chunk Village Market under the

outside canopy.

Vendor tables consisted of fresh

produce, arts n’ crafts, and food with

music entertainment in the background.

The farmers market will continue as

V i s i t

long as the season can go. The venue

is open to anyone who wants to attend

or participate as a vendor, this also

including business entrepreneurs.

Tony Wood Financial Services Coordinator shared “this is your market,

it is open to the entire community. I

would love to see the farmers market

used more.”

Weather permitting the next sched-

uled ‘Fridays at the Farmers Market’

events are:

October 8th with a tailgating theme

October 29th a costume crafts fair

Anyone can be a vendor and if interested in being a vendor contact: Tony

Happy Fall Everyone!

Question of the Issue:

There was the water bucket challenge and now it's the

popular crate challenge. If you had to make a challenge,

what would you have people do?

Garan Coons

Winnebago Communications

Officer

Winonah Leader Charge

WIN Editor

If I had to create a challenge, I would

call it the Ultimate Warrior Challenge.

Must film it and do 4 things.

Ride a horse with no saddle

Must kill a deer with a bow and

arrow

Must make a dish using only what

mother earth provides and no preservatives

Must sing or play a love song with a

flute or hand drum

When I worked at Nebraska Indian

Community College we did one of

these at the Santee Powwow. Every

part had a meaning. Ride a horse,

meaning that you were able to go

back and forth to work. Kill a deer,

meaning you could provide for your

family. Make a dish meaning that

your able to survive and not starve.

Be able to sing or play a love song

meaning that you were able to express yourself to a companion.

I would give it a try but to be honest

I know I couldn't complete all of them

haha! It would be crazy to watch

though.

I would create a challenge for everyone to be a source of positivity and

happiness in their own life and the

lives of others. For example, changing negative thoughts into positive

ones and complimenting or saying

something nice to someone at least

once a day.

The challenge I would create is aimed

towards my people with furbabies!

This would be a 7 day challenge

and each day would be something

different. You would need to create

a short video of something new, fun,

and exciting that you did with your

pet that day. For example, I have an

American Bulldog and he LOVES to

go for walks or taking trips to the dog

park; I would create one video for

our walks, one video for the dog park

trip, a trip to Starbucks because he

loves his whipped cream, and even

have one day where we are lounging

around, watching movies. The idea

behind the challenge would be to promote healthy relationships with our

furbabies, we don’t realize how much

we mean to them when we are their

whole world! :)

I would create a challenge that would

help the planet, like planting a tree in

your neighbor's yard (with approval

from them first of course), fastest to

fill a large dumpster with litter garbage, figuring out a creative way to

recycle the disposable masks.

Ho-Chunk, Inc. employees awarded Little

Priest Tribal College scholarships

Two Ho-Chunk, Inc. employees were recently awarded scholarship letters to

Little Priest Tribal College.

Terri Lee Medina, Culture and Youth Education Coordinator, and Santita

Medina, Office Assistant with All Native Solutions, were each chosen through a

dedicated committee process.

“I want to express my deepest gratitude for being selected as a recipient of

the LPTC scholarship,” said Terri Lee. “I am very humbled, and this award will

help empower me to focus on my education with a less financial burden. My

three children are my motivation to further my education, and I want to set the

example and be a role model for them.”

Employees must be in good standing and with the company for at least a

year to be considered.

“I am grateful to be awarded the LPTC Scholarship and want to express my

appreciation to the Ho-Chunk Scholarship Committee,” added Santita. “I am

thankful for the opportunities provided to us employees and am happy to be a

recipient.”

Scholarships are awarded up to three times per year through a partnership

with Little Priest Tribal College that is intended to emphasize the importance

of education.

JESUS OUR SAVIOR

LUTHERAN OUTREACH

"The Secret to Happiness Part 2"

In the last issue I asked the question

'what is the secret to happiness?' Dr.

Norman Nagel preached: 'The greatest

folly is to fool oneself into thinking that

in fact we can earn or deserve salvation

(and thereby we deserve happiness)'

[Selected Sermons of Norman Nagel London 1955 (205-6)].

Some use the Law to demand that

God owes them happiness:"Look at me

God - I am praying to you - often, at

every meal, when I raise up and when

I lay down my head! Look at me - I put

money in the offering plate each week.

Look at me I assist at funerals - tending the fire, preparing meals, donating

food or money, or cutting the cake or

offering up a prayer. Or look at me - I

am not like those who get drunk, or who

steal from others, or those who bully

or slander or who tell lies, or who are

sexually immoral."

'Some people go so far as to take

the Law and annul the Gospel. They

replaced God's way of promise and gift,

as if there was another way, a way in

which to earn God's favor. They would

transform the gracious, giving God into

the role of a spectator who should applaud their achievements' [Nagel (205)].

To insist on one's merits is to rob

Christ of doing it all for us. If we can do

it, then Christ died in vain. Paul brings

home to us the peril of diminishing or

rejecting the completeness of Christ's

redemption, for if our reliance is not

completely in Christ, then it is in ourselves and it is all up to us. If we are

unwilling to receive all as a gift from

God and would claim our due, then we

shall receive the wages we claim, which

is being left to ourselves by God, which

is hell. [Nagel (206)].

The secret to happiness is not in our

doing at the rejection or the expense of

what Jesus has done.

'The secret to happiness is in God.

He has nothing to get; He has only

everything to give. In giving away His

gifts, God has His happiness. Here is the

true happiness that lives not in getting

but in giving. So He might give, God

needed those to whom He could make

His gifts. There must be somebody to

receive them. Therefore, God created

us. He designed us as the recipients

of His gifts. Thus God would fulfill His

happiness. This happiness was not for

Himself alone but for His creatures

whom He created and equipped for

similar giving, for similar happiness'

[Nagel (203)].

'So God created the complementariness of husband and wife and the way

of oneness. God designed the giving

of themselves to each other, the one

flesh, the shared happy life of mutual

giving. This giving, which is the action

of love, is never static but ever growing.

The more that is given, the more there

is to give, the greater the happiness.

Therefore, God ordained that children

should come from the giving of husband and wife to each other. In children

are opportunities for further giving, for

further happiness. Marriage, family,

and society place us amid many provocations to giving, that is, to happiness.

There is God's design. There is God's

happiness that He wanted to share with

us. All He asked of His creatures was

that they should receive His gifts from

Him, allow themselves to be given to,

and find their happiness as God finds

it in giving' [Nagel (203-4)].

'The greatest gift from God is His

Son. Here is the height of giving. For

those who rebelled and refused His

gifts, God gave His Son to die and rise

again so to us He might give forgiveness

achieved by Christ's atoning death and

the risen triumphant life victorious

over sin, death, and hell. From all the

wretched unrest of getting and wanting and getting and wanting again, we

have been made free. We are God's own,

living from the gift of His hand. From

our glad and grateful hearts we sing,

"Thanks be to God for His unspeakable gift!" There it is. Is it yours? Do

you receive it, that is, do you believe'

[Nagel (206)]?

Fall Armyworm

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, is a pest of row

crops and lawns, preferring

Kentucky bluegrass above other

types of lawn grasses grown in

the region. The caterpillars eat

the blades of grass, to the point

of turf thinning and browning.

Sixth instars, the largest they’ll

grow as caterpillars, are 1-¼

inches long with 3 stripes extending along their length and an

inverted “Y” shape on their head.

Pupation takes place in the turf,

with the adult moths emerging to

mate. Sources differ on the number of eggs each female produces

but it is many, ranging from 100

to 1000. Egg masses can appear

on buildings, fences, plants, and

outdoor furniture. Eggs develop

into first instar caterpillars in

just 2-5 days. Initially, feeding

is minimal, owing to the caterpillar’s small size, but as they grow,

their appetite increases and the

damage they cause more readily

apparent.

The FAW is a tropical pest,

overwintering where winters are

mild, in southern Florida and

Texas, and blown to northern

locations via storms and the ac-

companying winds in summer.

The “fall” in its common name

refers to caterpillars becoming

prevalent in late summer and

early fall and “armyworm” references the caterpillars moving

across the lawn in a line, eating everything as they go. FAW

has no diapause, a suspension

of development to successfully

overwinter harsh winters like

some of our native insects do.

The FAW will be active until

the first freeze at which time

all feeding and activity by the

FAW ends—at least until next

year’s storms blow moths into

our region.

Insecticides will be most effective when caterpillars are newly-hatched and damage is not

noticeable. To monitor for the

FAW, mix a container of soapy

water and dump it on the lawn.

If the caterpillars are present,

they will move above the lawn’s

surface. Insecticides containing

one of these active ingredients

are effective against the fall ar myworm: carbaryl, chlorantraniliprole, azadirachtin, Monterey

B.t., spinosad, and bifenthrin.

Once the lawn is free of the FAW,

overseeding may be necessary to

fill in thin areas.

The Winnebago Tribal Council is 100% AGAINST Meth. Not only is Meth

harmful to the individual, it destroys families and our community. Meth

use is not the HoChunk/Winnebago way of life. On 12-30-19, during the

Winnebago Mid-monthly Tribal Council meeting, a motion was passed to

publish all meth related offenses occurring on the Winnebago reservation,

in the Winnebago Indian News.

The following individual(s) has been arrested for a meth offense…

As of 09-14-2021, there are no recent meth arrest(s) to report.
