We gave twenty five Easter baskets out and one elder

about integrating environmental justice with other EPA priorities and initiatives.”
Lisa is a co-founder and creator of grassroots group the Fort Berthold Protectors of Water and Earth Rights (POWER). She serves
on the Dakota Resource Council (DRC) Board of Directors. She served on Western Organization of Resource Council (WORC)

For Your Information
Reminders
Greetings! Would you consider
yourself to be the type of person who
is easily distracted? Or maybe you are
the type of person who has that laser
focus to not be distracted at all. Either
way, there are pros and cons to both
characteristics. If for example, you are
easily distracted, you may miss the
point of a discussion or presentation.
Whereas if you tend to be laser
focused on the point of a discussion or presentation, you may
miss the details leading to that point. Okay…so what? What is
the point of this example? There isn’t a point to this example.
Just a subtle reminder that we as human beings have been
created with varying behavioral characteristics. All be it created
in the image and likeness of our Creator (God). Created,
nonetheless, with individual characteristics. Creation just would
not work if we, as created human beings, were alike. God knows
this, after all He is God. This may be the reason why God has
given us “reminders”. Reminders to help us remember who God
is and what God has done and is doing for us. Reminders to help
us remember that God is very much alive and present here with
us. Regardless of what distractions may exist in our lives. So
then, what of these “reminders”; what are they and where can we
find them? Well, they are all around us. We can and do
experience them to varying degrees, during various situations
whether we are aware or not. Here are just a few examples of
“reminders” given to us…the stars in the sky, the sands on the
seashore, light, dark, wheat, weeds, rain, fire, wind (everyone’s
favorite reminder), fruit, bread, fish, thirst, stones, rock (my
special favorite reminder). There are many, many more. Should
you be inclined to check out the source of these and the many
more reminders given us from God the Father, you will need to do
this one thing…read bible scripture. Yes, read bible scripture.
Contained within the words of scripture are these “reminders”
that existed when scripture was first recorded and continue to
exist today. The hope is when you look at the stars in the sky or
see a field of wheat or you are thirsty, that you will be reminded
of how God is very much alive and working in your lifetime. And
that that should result in a closer personal relationship with God.
Message From Veteran Dawn White
Powwow/Celebration Season is fast approaching
and after these past years looking forward to the
celebrations at home.
As a Veteran and former Flag Bearer for one of our
celebrations I want to address this:
When we as Veterans get chosen to be Flag Bearers
for our respective celebrations on Fort Berthold one
of our responsibilities is to ask families to raise the
flag of one of our dear departed comrades.
This is an honor for that flag to be flown at the
celebration. To hear their songs being sung, hear the
announcer tell stories of the ones being flown and
the list of their deeds as a warrior and how they were
as a person in life. It’s to always remember our
WARRIORS and their legacy. My Grandmas said to
never forget our Warriors...
Our modern day celebrations have evolved from our
Warrior Societies and the teachings of those
societies. One of the teachings is generosity to the
people, especially the vulnerable of the tribe. Our
Warriors always provided protection and meat to
those very ones.
Today when these Veterans come ask to raise the
flag of our dear departed Warriors it is an HONOR!..
My Grandparents would tell me when ones come
ask you to do something you should never say no
cause it takes a lot for them to ask.
Families donate or feed, some families don’t know or
were never taught the ways of our respective tribal
ways to honor and will ask what should I do? I
always say the best that you can do for people.. if all
you have is one blanket than that’s the best for you,
cause your family will always help you.
More and more I’m hearing from fellow Veterans
how hard it is to ask families or flags lost. Some
Veterans their flags have never been flown. Families
just out right refuse. Sad that our ways are eroding
and these honors are fading.
But I will say this; ALWAYS REMEMBER OUR
VETERANS, OUR WARRIORS!!!!
When these Flag Bearers ask, please don’t refuse to
Deacon Dan Barone
honor our Warriors!
