COUNCILMAN SPOTTED BEAR’S GREETINGS

SS

Tashka’nito’sha Aame,

Greetings to All,

1 would like to start by giving my

condolences to all those who have recently

lost loved ones. Iam also thinking of

those who might be struggling or facing a

challenging time. I offer encouragement to

you. Iwas taught that in the spring time of

‘the year the Earth is pushing up new life, all

the grass and growing things are moving and

growing like a baby when they are teething,

‘When we say our morning prayers and

remember our Earth mother in our prayers it

brings relief. Each day we walk on the earth

‘we feel those same feelings too. Sometimes

‘we go through challenges and other times

‘our days are bright with sunshine and calm

and peaceful. Our community has alwayss

been known to be helpful and encouraging

towards each other.

‘We have recently made it through two severe

spring storms with so much snow! The first

storm was light snow that blew into the

cracks and crevasses of everything. High

winds caused blowing and drifting and

low visibility. It sounds like we got about

30 inches of snow in a two day period in

the first storm. The moisture was nice to

receive but we all had to hunker down and

make it through the storm, The second

storm the ground was already starting to

‘warm and thaw. We had no frost in the

ground and the wet and heavy snow melted

and penetrated into the soil. This will give

usa lot of green new growth on the land

this spring. Our community members had

to once again settle into place and wait it

‘out. We lost power for about 16 hours or

so. We were lucky. Others were without

power for days and even a week. With ice

accumulating on everything the freezing

rain touched. Many trees and power poles,

as well as power lines were broken. There

‘were stretches in western North Dakota that

‘went for miles and miles with all of their

power poles broken and collapsed from the

‘weight of the ice caused from the freezing

rain. The wind was severe too during this,

storm and I was told we received nearly 30

inches of snow again in the second storm.

Fortunately our new community center had

aback up generator that powered portions,

of the building so community members

had a warm place to stay and wait out the

storm and power outage. Many things

were learned during these storms so we will

be even more prepared for severe winter

conditions in the future.

was out on the land with my children and

nieces and nephews this past weekend and

seen all of the signs of spring. The ducks and

waterfowl were mated up and sitting in the

ponds and water holes. The small birds are

back and the wild turkeys are courting and

in “full regalia” throughout the hills of Twin

Buttes. One of the signs of spring I enjoy to

see are the beautiful purple crocus flowers.

‘They are the fist flowers to blossom in the

spring. [have seen them push up through

the snow to tell us spring has arrived. The

pastures are filled with little ealves and colts

and there are many little red bison calves in

the Hans Creek bison pasture, In Mandan

language we call bison “pti tkush, the “true

animal” or the “real buffalo.” When beef

cattle came to this part of the country about

140 years ago, or 50, we had to distinguish

between the two.

For so many years we have had to travel

‘many miles for basic services. Today we are

generating services and making them local,

‘That means more jobs are being created,

‘more opportunities to stay in Twin Buttes.

Our elders are cared for and out children are

Tooked after and have well-deserved facilities,

to participate in their favorite activities. 1

hope we continue to plant trees and get our

‘community to look like Elbowoods again

someday with beautiful cottonwood trees

and fruit trees our kids and community

‘members can stop by and grab handfuls of

healthy snacks right from the land!

‘The fair grounds project which includes an

indoor rodeo arena, outdoor rodeo arena,

Indian relay race horse track, powwow

arbor, RV parking, camp ground, and

shower building, will be nearly 100 percent

complete by this fall. This area that consists

of about 4o acres will serve as an economic

stimulus package for our community. We

willbe able to host many quality events and

rive our economy and local opportunity.

(Our children will grow up with these

‘opportunities and learn about horsemanship

and engage in our culture. We are the

“Home of the Champions,” because a

handful of our Twin Buttes cowboys and

cowgirls won national ttles and went on to

become professionals and make names for

a piece about the origin of the “Home of the

Champions” ina future newsletter.

‘The Twin Buttes roads department will

get a new building and a new location this,

summer. Richard “Ricky,” Hank, and Julian

have been working out of an old out-dated

facility for many years. The old building was

moved up from Elbowoods when the River

bottom was flooded in the the early 1950's.

mn season is upon us!

‘We have many exciting projects to look

forward to this season. A big thank you to

the members of the MHA tribal business

council for supporting our efforts in Twin

Buttes to build services and offer local

‘opportunities to our community members.

‘The new building will have everything the

roads department will need run a successful

roads department.

February was a very fun month for us at the Twin

Buttes Elementary School. We celebrated the 100th

day of school on February 1th with a 100 Minute

Scavenger Hunt. We ended the day with and ice

cream with 100 different toppings!!! Everyone had a

lot of fun doing the 100th day event. February 14th

we celebrated Valentine's Day in our classrooms with

parties, There was a Valentine's Day box decoration

competition as well. All the students did such a

wonderful job on their boxes! Have a look at how

wonderful they did!!!

Wonderful job to all of the students! They all looked

so wonderful!!! We started off March with Music

Madness with Mrs. Barcena. Students get to vote

on the teacher's favorite songs as they were growing

up. March oth was an early out day as the teachers

had a Professional Development day. In an effort

to be proactive and keep our kids safe, Twin Buttes

Elementary went virtual for a few days in January.

All the students who completed their work on time

received an exciting reward on March uth. March

11th the students who did their work got to go to Sky

the pictures of the Sky Zone Trip. We are very proud

of our students who put in the hard work and got

their assignments in on time!!

March 14th to March 18th was the Twin Buttes

Buttes Elementary was excited for the break and were

able to enjoy family and friends.

Twin Buttes Elementary received a special gift on

Friday, March 25th from the Enerplus Group from

Dickinson ND. Enerplus Inc. purchased a year

subscription of the Imagi Native Roots Magazine

for each of our students, This magazine is written

by six native women and includes things like Elder's

Corner, Imaginative Gallery, Student Spot Light,

Current Events, Indigenous History, Quotes from our

students and much more.

A special thanks to Enerplus for their investment in

our students. Parent-Teacher Conferences were held

COUNCILMAN SPOTTED BEAR’S GREETINGS

(Continued from Page 2)

There will be a couple paving

projects this summer. Our BIA

22 heading west of Twin Buttes

will get paved this summer to

the Mossett Bay (Charging Eagle

Bay) turn off. BLA 22 East to

Beaver Creek will also get paved.

There are many families down in

the Beaver Creek area that have

been waiting for a paved road for

many years. Our fair grounds

thru-roads, and parking lots will

also get paved this summer,

The round homes are scheduled

for completion this summer.

The homes are about 85 percent

complete and are waiting

finish work in the interior as

well as some final grading and

landscaping in the area. About

six other homes are being

constructed this summer as well.

Fort Berthold Housing Authority

(FBHA) has teamed up with

the Twin Buttes segment and is

building six new multi-bedroom

homes this summer. Five of

them with attached garages will

be built near the school and one

will be built in west housing.

The new Clinic and ambulance

garage is near completion and

is set for opening this summer.

A Twin Buttes assisted living

and elders care campus is being

planned for construction and

as soon as we have a location

pinned down construction will

begin. The Bison handling

facility is near completion and

we will soon be able to work and

manage the bison herd in the

new facility. An elk pasture is

planned out near the Mahto Bay

area of Twin Buttes and will get

fenced as soon as a pasture lease

is secured for the project.

One of the largest projects on the

list to begin is an unprecedented

Twin Buttes High School.

Planning will soon begin to

construct a high school. We have

never had a high school and

after 8th grade our children have

historically left the community

to seek a high school education

off the reservation at nearby

boarder town schools. Our

children travel up to 80-90 miles

round trip per day to attend

the nearest high schools. Some

of these schools have no bus

routes forcing parents to drive

these distances each day to get

their high school age kids to

school. The plan will be to begin

construction on the new high

school the spring of 2023.

More housing will be planned

for 2023 construction. A large

25-35 homes subdivision

initiative will be planned with

all the infrastructure laid for

a new housing area. With the

development of new services

and jobs being created will

require more homes to be built

to accommodate the growing

community. Manufacturing of

some kind will also be planned

for job creation and more local

opportunities. We want our

children to graduate high school,

attain advanced college degrees

and vocational training and

consider returning home to twin

buttes to start their careers and

families because there will be

an opportunity here for them to

come home to.

One of the projects I am most

excited about is a renewable

energy grid system in twin

Buttes. We will incorporate

solar, wind, and other renewable

energy sources to generate

electricity and work towards

energy independence in our area.

With the global uncertainty of

climate shift and climate change

it is important that our tribe

and community move further

towards self reliance and food

and energy independence. It is

a long term goal and vision. We

will get where we are going and

we will move in the direction

we point our feet. There are

many exciting initiatives to look

forward too. I look forward to a

healthy and productive season

ahead of us. It is important to be

kind and encouraging towards

one another as we navigate

towards an uncertain but

promising future. I look forward

to writing and updating more

in a future edition of the Twin

Buttes Times. Thank you to all

those who submitted and made a

contribution to this edition.

Thank you, that is all for now.

On a sad note we want to send a special

mention to two amazing teachers who

at Twin Buttes Elementary for a long

time. She is a wonderful woman with

a beautiful heart and the students and

staff will miss her very much. She is

retiring at the end of the year and we

want her to know that she is amazing

and we will miss her!! Also, Mr. Kilwein

will be moving on and wont be with us

next year. He also will be missed. He is

MAY 2022

Congrats

to our

hometown

girl,

Chloe

Fredericks!

Gratitude is at the core of who the Fredericks

family is. As this article is being written, our

hometown girl, Chloe Fredericks, is appearing

on the finale of the newest singing competition

show called, “Americas Song Contest”, Chloe

would finish in the top ten out of representatives

from all 50 states, four territories and

Washington D.C. The festivities kicked off with

performances from the show's two hosts, Kelly

Clarkson and Snoop Dogg.

After the show Casey Fredericks, Chloe's dad,

took to social media to thank Chloe's Many fans.

Chloe herself went live in her socials again to

show her appreciation and gratitude to all who

helped vote her to the finish.

Kami Fredericks, Chloe’s mom, said in an

interview, “We have always known that Chloe

was special from the moment she was born! She

truly has been blessed with an incredible soul

and an incredible voice! She would hum and sing

tunes constantly as a child and still does! As a

Child Chloe was completely artsy she was good

in paints, sculpting, drawing, not to mention all

of her writing ability. She was playing a guitar

at the age of four, she loved horses and ranch

life. I have always called Chloe ‘my little singing

Birdie’. Chloe wanted to be a Dentist growing

up! We have told her now to have fun and just

be who she was born to be! We know that this is

what she was destined to do!”

As a community we are grateful to you Chloe,

thank you for showing and inspiring native

youth that dreams really do come true and that

anything is possible...we are very excited to see

what Chloe does next!!

Melanie Angel Moniz

(Mapaakookohka'miihe)

It is with good intentions and a humble heart

that I share with you all that 1, Melanie Moniz,

am a candidate for the North Dakota Public

Service Commission.

My relatives | accepted this nomination for

Public Service Commission because it is

imperative that we act now and identify a

strategy for the best possible future for North

Dakota.

lam a parent of four beautiful children, and I

believe that our children and future generations

deserve a healthy clean home to live and

thrive. We must prioritize long term goals that

transition us toward clean energy solutions,

solutions that center equity, justice, and the

collective well-being of all North Dakotans.

My background in advocacy on local, state, and

federal levels has always been for equity, equity

for the most vulnerable, equity for families,

equity for our children, and equity for workers.

True equity requires diversity, and that means

having Indigenous representation at the table.

When I'm in office, 1 will work to strengthen

tribal and state relations, do all I can to ensure

our children have a healthy future, see to it that

public input is what drives the work, put public

safety first and make energy democracy a reality

for all North Dakotans.

I have been called on to stand up and I've

answered the call, but I cannot do this alone

relatives, your support is needed, Together we

can change the future of North Dakota for our

little ones and those yet to come, please join me

and vote Moniz for PSC.
