Governor’s Report
Ma-gu-wam,
I hope this newsletter finds you well. As we
move into September, we are still dealing
with the COVID-19 virus. The pueblo has
worked diligently to provide services for the
community. We are now able to vaccinate
children 6 months and older for the COVID-19
virus. Contact the COVID-19 team to schedule
an appointment for vaccinations. We continue
to monitor COVID-19 positive patients and
provide the oral antiviral Paxlovid. If you
test positive with an at home test, please
contact the COVID-19 team at 505-869-9720
for notification and further treatment such as
the Paxlovid antiviral. Please stay safe and
continue COVID-19 safe practices.
On August 11, 2022, five different pueblos,
tribes and nations were awarded grants
through the NTIA competitive grant process.
The following Pueblos and tribes, Kewa,
Santa Fe Indian School, Mescalero, and
Jicarilla were awarded grant funding for
broadband. The Pueblo of Isleta was awarded
26 million dollars for Broadband connectivity.
New Mexico Senator Ben Ray Lujan, New
Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan-Grisham
were present along with other dignitaries
from the awarded pueblos and tribes, along
with the announcement from NTIA Special
Representative, Andy Berke from Washington
DC. We look forward to getting broadband to
the entire community.
On August 20, 2022, a community meeting
was held about water resources and water
rights. This was an informative meeting for
the community. We will continue to do our
best to provide the community with water
issues and the progress of quantifying our
water rights.
We understand there are
many topics when it comes to water issues;
however, we want to share with you some
policy initiatives. 1.) Restore fallow historic
lands to agricultural production. 2.) Protect
our historic agricultural lands by identifying
other Tribal lands for development, including
housing. 3.) Expand water uses on lands
that have not been historically irrigated. The
Pueblo of Isleta Water Work Group have
drafted a strategic plan for the Pueblo of Isleta.
The Plan includes 4 Goals with Objectives
and Actions to achieve of those Goals.
Goal 1: set policies for water resources and
agricultural lands, and provide administrative
support.
Goal 2: educate leadership and the community
about our water.
Goal 3: protect, conserve and develop Isleta’s
water rights and water resources.
Includes developing plans for:
•
Water Rights,
•
Irrigation Operation and
Maintenance, &
•
Irrigation Infrastructure
Improvement.
Goal 4: expand agricultural production
through targeted programs.
Includes developing plans for:
•
Reclaiming Fallow Lands,
•
New Agricultural Development,
•
Enhancing Conservation/
Enterprise,
•
•
Indigenous Food Sovereignty, &
Youth Farming Program.
If you have any questions, comments, or
concerns, please email Lt. Governor Blane
Sanchez at blane.sanchez@isletapueblo.
com.
We would like to thank everyone who came
out for the Village Clean-up. We appreciate
everyone’s hard work and dedication to
keeping our community clean. We will have
a Cemetery clean up scheduled here in
September. Please lookout for the flyer for
the date and time for the clean-up.
On August 28, 2022 the St. Augustine Feast
Day was celebrated with vespers on the 27th
and Mass on the 28th. We celebrated with
a procession of St. Augustine and St. Kateri
within the plaza area. I ask the community
that we all pray to the creator to see and fulfill
our full celebrations with dances, food, and
festivities within our community.
Please keep our community in your prayers.
May the creator keep you all safe and provide
you with a long and prosperous life. We thank
the creator for plentiful rain, which we have
received.

Vernon B. Abeita

•
•

the impact of Trujillo’s successful challenge to the New Mexico

September 2022
My name is Jonna Toledo and I work out of the Goodwill
store in Los Lunas. What I do is help people find jobs in
the community. This is a FREE service that Goodwill offers.
I do work by appointment. The first appointment I just get
the information to help with your job search. Example: What
you are looking for, your availability, experience, etc…we
do meet weekly until you find a job. Just because you find
a job does not mean we are finished! I will stay in touch
with you about once a month for 3 months just to make
sure everything is going well. We want to make sure you
are being treated well and that the job is a good fit for you.
I can give job leads, help fill out applications electronically,
make resumes, and we can also practice interviewing skills
so you feel comfortable in an interview. I do know lots of
hiring managers in the area to help set up interviews. We
participate in job fairs as well as organize them and set them
up at Goodwill in Albuquerque and Los Lunas. Because
we are a non profit there is no charge for this service. It
is FREE to the community. Not a lot of people realize that
Goodwill does FREE services because they are not really
advertised. They just know that the store is a good place to
go and get good deals on merchandise. It doesn’t matter
what type of job you are wanting, I can help! There are
several different fields in the area including administrative,
custodial/janitorial, retail, daycare, eldercare, warehousing,
production, retail and food services. Soon landscaping and
outdoor type positions will be opening up. Please contact if
you need help. It is always my pleasure to help with your job
search. Just call me to set up an appointment! Thank you!
TRUANCY
Greetings from the Truancy Department!
Los Lunas Public Schools has provided information
regarding Parent Portal, which you can use to monitor
your student’s grades and attendance. You can access
the directions for Parent Portal on the School District
Website at www.llschools.net. Click on the Parents
section and then click on the Parent Portal Directions.
Los Lunas High School, Valencia High School and
Century High School have a new Native American
Liaison, Andrea Evans. Los Lunas Middle School and
Valencia Middle School also have a new Native American
Liaison, Tanesha Howard. Ms. Evans and Ms. Howard
are excited to work with your high school and middle
school students and offer any assistance they may need
this school year. So do not hesitate to contact them.
The Truancy Department has also started the Incentive
Program for our students. If your student has high
attendance and grades, they may be eligible to receive
a gift card from our department. In order for your child
to be eligible to receive an incentive, you must fill out
a Release of Information Form and return it to our
office. This form is necessary so that we can request
reports directly from the school. Keep in mind that this
incentive program is slightly different from the program
we currently have in place for Isleta Elementary School.
As the school year continues, the Truancy Department
will be sharing more information. If you have any
questions, please contact our office at 505-869-3870.
Start the school year off right… attend school daily!
Thank you,
Isleta Truancy Department

VETERANS ASSOCIATION
On August 16, 2022, a 15-Member Committee comprised
of current Indian Health employees and Veterans Services
came to visit our Isleta Veterans Facility. The committee
from 12 regions, including Hawaii, wanted to visit a
veteran’s facility located on an Indian reservation. Also to
make any necessary changes to the health systems both
with Indian Health and Veterans Administration. We were
chosen due to our ongoing projects and our active activities.
We answered many questions regarding the duties we
perform for our pueblo.
Hopefully, we made a positive impact. We are currently
working on a Health and Wellness Symposium to be held

ENVIRONMENTAL
Thank You From

Start of the 2022 Environmental Fair.
Rio Metro mascot Trax saying hello
to the camera.
We would like to thank everyone who attended the
2022 Environmental Fair! It was amazing to see
friends and families talk with exhibitors and learn
about their programs. We had over 40 exhibitors
participate including several Pueblo of Isleta
Departments. There was a variety of table displays
ranging from environmental educational materials
to live insects! It had been over 3 years since we had
the last in-person Environmental Fair. Although
the drive-thru events were okay, nothing compares
to seeing the community in person where you can
ask questions, have conversations, and just catch
up. Regarding COVID-19 safe practices, we would
like to thank everyone for wearing masks and social
distancing at the event. We hope you enjoyed the fair
and learned something from all the environmental
experts and exhibitors. If you by chance missed this
event, do not worry because the Environmental Fair
will return next year!
Special thanks to the Following POI

Recreation, Animal Control, Isleta Police, Human

ISLETA FIRE DEPARTMENT
Pueblo of Isleta Volunteer Fire Department
Member of the Month
Hello, my name is
Randy Jaramillo. I have
enjoyed being a member
with the fire department
since December 2018.
I am grateful for the
opportunity
to
help
the
community
and
challenge myself. I look
forward to continuing
as long as I am able.
My experience with the
department has provided
me specialized trainings
that I can apply in all
areas of my life.
On August 18th, 2022 the Isleta Pueblo Volunteer
membership participated in a CPR class to bring our
members current on their CPR. The course was taught at
the Wellness Center at the Tribal Complex.
PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
Fall will officially be here on September 22nd. It’s time to start
preparing your plumbing for colder temperatures. The use of heat
tape, pipe insulation or a light bulb can help protect pipes from
freezing. Properly installed skirting around modular homes will
greatly help protect the water and sewer lines from freezing.
Locate your water isolation (shut-off) valve. Many homes have a
main shut-off inside the home, usually located near the hot water
heater. Modular homes may have an isolation valve located under
the home; be sure to have an access panel to make reaching the
isolation valve easier.
Each residence has a water main line shut-off. Public Works does
NOT have mapping that will show exactly where each shut-off is
located. Homeowners need to locate the main shut-off to their
properties in the event Public Works is called to shut off the water in
an emergency. Time spent attempting to locate the shut-off means
the water will continue to flow. If the emergency is a burst water
line that is flooding the home, this means additional damage will
occur to the property while Public Works employees are searching
outside for the main shut off to the home.
Please take the time now to get prepared for winter. Remove swamp
cooler lines from spigots or frost frees. Turn the spigot or frost free
off, remove the swamp cooler line from the fixture and allow the
water to drain out of the line to prevent freezing. Remember to
drain the swamp cooler itself; water left in the unit over the winter
could cause damage to the unit itself.
We would like to thank Capt. Johnny Leyba and Capt.
Harry Croneberger from the Isleta Casino and Resort
Safety staff for taking the time to bring our members up to
current CPR standards.
Frost frees are designed to “drain” any water in the frost free
pipe out the bottom of the unit through a weep hole. If this weep
hole becomes clogged with debris, the water will not be able to
drain out. This may cause the frost free pipe to crack and break.
Homemade exterior faucets do not normally have any method to
drain themselves. If the homeowner did not provide a device to
drain the pipes, the piping may crack and water will leak out.
An isolation valve should be installed prior to ANY frost free or
homemade faucets in order to isolate the device so repairs can be
made. If a separate isolation valve is not provided, the main shut
off to the property will need to be located and turned off to stop the
flow of water; causing the loss of water to your home as well. Be
sure to install an isolation valve prior to any frost free or homemade
spigot/faucet and have a turn-off key available to turn the water on
and off as you need to.
Public Works main office line is 505-869-5170. After hour
emergencies need to be called in to the Isleta Dispatch nonemergency number, not 911.
Isleta Dispatch can be reached at
505-869-3030.

stopped by for a visit. Peralta Playhouse
chooses the library each year as a field
trip destination and we are happy to
accommodate them. Due to the COVID
pandemic this field trip hasn’t taken place
for the last two years. During their visit
we do a story time followed with a craft
and activity. We provided all the supplies
and we try to make a little gift bag for a
field trip souvenir. The library would like
to invite any child care providers or groups
that would like to plan a field trip/ visit to
the library to give us a call. We ask for a
couple weeks’ notice so we may prepare
for your visit. To schedule please call the

RECREATION SECTION
Welcome back students!
The After
School program is going strong here at
the Recreation Center, we are once again
offering after school activities for the enrolled
participants. We have students from Isleta
Elementary, Bosque Farms, and S.O.D.A.
enrolled in the program this year. Students
are involved in homework time or reading
when they arrive to the center, then into
an activity for the afternoon that consists
of gym play, arts & crafts, swimming, board
games etc. For more information regarding
the After School Program, please call the
New Isleta Recreation for more information
505-869-9777.
We are hoping to hire some additional parttime staff to help us with our afterschool
program this year. Once we get those
individuals on board, then we will be
in a position to take more afterschool
participants. If you are interested, in having
your child, grandchild, niece, nephew,
brother or sister attend our after school
program this year, call and get them put on
our waiting list. As I mentioned earlier, as
soon as we are able to hire additional help
we will get them in our program.
Here are some insights of the classroom
setting activities. Students learn a little
history about the activity for the day. One
of the activities the afterschool participants
worked on was on Ice Cream.
The
participants were asked to list their favorite
ice cream flavors and the majority of them
chose chocolate, vanilla and pink bubble
gum! Here are some facts about Ice Cream
that we learned while students made their
own ice cream in a bag.
Ice Cream Facts:
Did you know that….
1. The top 3 countries that consume
the most ice cream is United States,
Australia and the Norway.
2. Vanilla is the #1 flavor and Chocolate
is the second favorite.
3. 90% of Americans have ice cream in
their freezers.
4. Chocolate syrup is the most popular
topping for ice cream.
Another activity we did with the
participants in the after school program was
to learn about and make clay pots. They
learned a couple of different techniques on
forming a pot; those were the coil and pinch
techniques. We also had a small discussion
on a pottery wheel that they can make
an assortment of any size of pots, plates,
cups and much more. The students were
able to use Air-dry clay to make different
clay art like coil pots, animals, and flower
candleholders and they were able to paint
them after their work dried.
SPORTS SECTION
This is what is on deck in the sports section;
we are having the Corn Hole Tournament
on September 11, 2022, which is tentatively
scheduled to start at 9am. We are trying to
get some food vendors out for this event so
if your team is in or you want to come out to
watch it. This event will be held across the
Street from the Rec center.
The Hitting Challenge will be up next on
September 25th and will be held at the
Chical Park. The event starts at 10 am, if
you haven’t signed up there’s still time as
the deadline is September 19th.
It is almost time to sign up your team for
the Volleyball League; information about
the volleyball league will be out soon.
We are working on the Pueblo Harvest run/
walk and we are looking to start a Pickle
Ball League as well, so if any of you are
interested in learning about or want to play
Pickle Ball, contact the recreation center
and speak to George Waquie for more
information.

NEWSLETTER
ISLETA POLICE DEPARTMENT
September - 2022
Two-thirds of 2022 is GONE! Time seems to be flying this year with Labor Day just around
the corner, followed by Halloween and very soon Thanksgiving, Christmas and
New Year’s Eve into 2023!
The Third National Night Out was held August 5, 2022 and it was definitely a
success! The Isleta Police Department hopes you were able to come out and join
the fun. Many departments had booths providing information and games for the
members of the Pueblo to enjoy. Raffle prizes, food and games were provided and it
was just a “good old-fashioned” get together for law enforcement, departments and
the community to help build a strong and cohesive relationship to work together to
address community problems.
Thank you to all the departments that participated making the event such a
success. A special, deep heartfelt thank you to the Police Department’s Organizing
Committee taking over for last year’s Police Department organizer. This mighty
trio took the reins and worked hard to bring it all together.
Although these three were
not the only persons who
made this event a success,
the department recognizes
with great appreciation all the
individuals and businesses
who contributed to this event
with donations, their time and
all their efforts.
Additional photographs will
follow in the next newsletter.

NEWS FROM ANIMAL CONTROL
(Labor Day), however, the Traffic Division
is asking drivers to drive sober every day.
Last month Isleta Animal Control took
part in National Night Out and the
Environmental Fair. During these two
events, Animal Control handed out
information about the Rabies Virus and
our new upcoming changes to the Animal
Ordinance. Both events had a great turn
out and gave the community a chance to
meet the Animal Control Team.

Highway Traffic Safety Administration

While the weather starts to cool down and
fall approaches, it is still very important to
keep your pets’ water bowls filled with fresh
water. Dogs and cats can easily overheat
and it is important to keep your pet
hydrated. Here are some tips to keeping
your pets’ water bowl cool and refreshing:
•
•
•
Keep your pet’s bowl in the shade
whenever possible
Freeze a water bottle and put it in
your pet’s bowl (mini water bottles
work perfectly)
Use a clay or ceramic water bowl
We are out of all dry and canned food. We
will update the community when we get
another shipment of food in. Please call

you are needing service.
IHSP TRAFFIC DIVISION
This division’s never-ending challenges
detecting and dealing with traffic violators,
DWIs and crashes are met head-on daily,
365 days a year. The “Driver Sober or Get
Pulled Over” mobilization began August
17 and continues through September 5
Drivers are making riskier decisions when
they’re behind the wheel. In 2020, 1 1 , 6 5 4
people died in drunk-driving crash – a 14%
increase from 2019.
During the Labor Day holiday period, we
typically see an increase in drunk-driving
deaths – and that’s why you’ll likely see more
law enforcement on the roads. Drive Sober
or Get Pulled Over, which runs August 17 –
September 5, aims to educate people about
the dangers and consequences of driving
drunk.
One person is killed about every 45 minutes
in a drunk-driving crash, totaling more
than 11,000 lives lost each year.

•
Before drinking, plan a safe

•
Don’t let someone get behind

If you’re hosting a gathering,

Keeping our People Safe Suicide Prevention
Orion Zuni,
Experiential Educator
B’eeh-K’oo-ee Wellness Center
(505) 869-5482
orion.zuni@ISLCLINIC.net
September has arrived! This time of year brings
many things including seasonal change, the start
of a new educational year, and for many people it
can be a major change in our mental wellbeing.
Keeping this in mind, September is Suicide
Prevention month. According to the Centers for
Disease Control, suicide is considered a death
caused by injuring oneself with the intent to die.
While a suicide attempt is when someone harms
themselves with any intent to end their life, but
they do not die as a result of their actions. Suicide
can be the product of violence, trauma, and even
injury. This is a major public health issue that
severely impacts Native American populations
across the United States, especially those who
identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual. CDC data
shows that 90% of individuals who attempt suicide
and survive will never go on to die by suicide.
Although suicide is a stigmatized and often taboo
subject, it is still preventable and we can all play a
role in saving someone’s life. It isn’t always obvious
if someone is in distress, but most individuals
who are suicidal will show some signs that they
are considering harming or killing themselves.
Unfortunately, adults are not the only populations
that are at risk of suicidal inclinations. Today we
are seeing younger generations experiencing
hardships that lead to suicidal behaviors.
Signs of suicide within older and younger
populations may differ in some instances
depending on the individual’s environment. Signs
can include speaking about death or suicide,
seeking methods of self-harm, and/or talking about
being hopeless or having no reason to live. Other
potential signs could also include an increase
in alcohol or drug use, increase in reckless
behaviors, uncontrollable anger, changes in sleep
schedules, social withdrawal, and obtaining lethal
weapons (guns, sharp objects, etc.). If one or more
of those warning signs is observed, especially if
they are new behaviors, or seem to be in relation
to a painful event, loss, or change, please step in
or speak up.
Intervening in these types of situations isn’t easy,
and can be very concerning for all involved. But,
you are not alone! If you or someone you know
is in an emergency call 911 immediately. There
are also other free options for those who may find
themselves in crisis, and may include dialing 988
which is an active suicide and crisis lifeline that
provides 24/7, free and confidential support for
people in distress. Sometimes it takes just one
person to take action and save a life. If you find
yourself or someone you know that is struggling
with their mental health please feel free to reach
out to B’eeh-K’oo-ee Wellness Center (AKA Isleta
Behavioral Health) at 505-869-5475 and set up an
appointment with one of our counselors.
