Wins National Golden Gloves
Bronze Medal
Jimmie Perez III fought in the New Mexico
State Golden Gloves Tournament in March
22-24 in Roswell NM advancing him to
fight in the 2024 New Mexico/ Colorado
Regional Golden Gloves, in Longmont
Colorado on April 13, advancing him to
fight 2024 National Golden Gloves, in
Detroit Michigan- May 13-18, 2024, Jimmie
Perez III came close to the championship,
reaching the semifinals in his weight class
and earning a bronze medal after receiving
a bye in the first round, he defeated Hser
Htoo of the Upper Mid-West team by
unanimous decision, then lost by split
decision to Cleveland's Marcellus Smith
in the semifinals where he won a National
Golden Glove Bronze medal.
He had this to say about his achievement“I am eternally grateful to our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ for the strength and
guidance he’s given me that has carried
me through this incredible journey
to winning a National Golden Gloves
bronze medal. To my family, friends, and
community, your unwavering support has
been the foundation of my journey. Your
encouragement, love, and belief in me has
fueled my determination and resilience
to win a National Golden Gloves bronze
medal. I hope my achievement serves as an
inspiration to the youth. Showing them that
with faith, hard work, and a great support
system, they too can reach their dreams
and conquer any challenges standing in
their way. Next year I will take gold, but
bronze isn’t a terrible achievement in my
first National Golden Gloves, so I accept it
humbly and will use it to push me further
rather than define who I am in and out of
the ring.
Thank you all for your support with my
fundraising and being my champions, but
most importantly inspiring me to pursue
my dream.”

TRUANCY
June Greetings!
The Truancy Department would like to send
out a BIG CONGRATULATIONS to all students
who have graduated, from Head Start on up to
High School as well as College. We hope that
those who are moving up in to different schools
and grades are ready for exciting and positive
experiences in their new environments. Many
will be amazed with the changes, new faces and
new routines when they enter into the next level
of their education. For now, they get to enjoy
their summer vacation with their families and
friends. We wish them the best of luck and we
continue to stress that daily school attendance
is important for their success.
Head Start graduates will soon experience
new routines and schedules when they enter
Elementary School! They will get to learn new
skills that will continue to help them as they
move up the educational ladder. At times, it
may be challenging but we know that they have
all the wonderful support of their parents and
siblings.
Some students will soon be freshmen entering
High School. There will be many fun and
wonderful moments as well as some exciting
and challenging times; remember that many
people surround you and are rooting for your
success. Do not be afraid to ask for help
and reach out to those who care about you - your parents, family, teachers, counselors,
community elders, and community resource
providers within the community. Remember to
surround yourself with positive peers and stay
focused on your goals. We are cheering you
on!
As many of our students have graduated from
High School and have successfully completed
their 12 years of education, some may move
forward to enhance their education by attending
college and working on becoming doctors,
lawyers and engineers. Some students may be
ready to start the work force and be successful
with their goals. We know that whatever it is
that they decide to do, it will be rewarding to
them as well as their parents.
Congratulations College graduates! When you
started in preschool or Kindergarten, I know
that many of you had dreams of your college
education and becoming teachers, police
officers, architects, or even airplane pilots!
You have done a great job by pursuing your
goals and dreams; you will represent the Isleta
community with pride!
Last but not least, thank you to all the parents
who have supported and spent many tireless
hours with their children - - doing homework,
projects, cheering them on in extracurricular
activities, or just letting your children know
that they are doing a great job with reaching
milestones and accomplishing goals. YOU are
doing an awesome job!
Now comes a time in June to enjoy your break
from school and enjoy family and sibling time.
Taking a vacation might be on your mind, a
weekday gathering with your peers, or just
staying home and relaxing might be on your
agenda. Whatever it is that you plan on doing,
remember to be safe and enjoy!
HAPPY SUMMER TIME to you all!

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
This spring the Department of Education
has been abuzz with both anticipation and
excitement as we recognize the academic
accomplishments of our students. The
Department is excited to mark this
milestone with celebration, reflection, and
action. The Department has looked to
celebrate our Isleta students and JohnsonO’Malley eligible students at these
momentous occasions. The Department
along with Tribal Administration, and
the JOM Indian Education Committee
presented Native American students with
Cultural & Perseverance Awards. Each
of these students received a stole and a
cord. Jeanette Ferrara, Pueblo of Isleta
community member, handcrafted each
stole: stitching a prayer for a good life in
each and every stole.
Good Road Series.” The goal of the first
event was to: celebrate the end of the
school year, educate and share available
resources for summer wellness and
cultural programming, build relationships
and trust between the community youth
and Pueblo services. The meeting hosted
representation of students between the
ages 13-20. The evening began with words
from Governor Zuni. He started by warmly
welcoming the students and congratulating
them on finishing the school year. The
night featured a mobile gaming truck
where students learned the dangers of
cyberbullying. Students enjoyed a wide
variety of games. They were also able to
play against officers from Isleta Police
Department. Students thoroughly enjoyed
the gaming center and interaction with
Police.
Century High School
The Department of Education experienced
the Rose and Robe Ceremony of Century
High School. Special guests, 1st Lieutenant
Governor Jiron and Indian Education
Committee
Chair
Ryan
Hickman,
demonstrated their devoted and continued
support of Indian education by attending
the ceremony. The special guest along with
the Department presented the stoles and
cords to Native American students during
the ceremony. This public presentation
allowed for Native American students
to be recognized before their teachers,
peers, and family. The robing portion of
the night highlighted the pride of parents,
grandparents, and guardians as they
robed their student. The rose portion of
the night allowed students to give their
parents a rose symbolizing the student’s
growth, accomplishment, and blooming
potential. Many of the students presented
the rose to a family member, mentor, or
favorite teacher. The ceremony created an
atmosphere of astonishment and marvel.
Los Lunas High School
The Department hosted a Native American
Awards Assembly. Governor Zuni welcomed
students and their families with warmth
and sincerity. Along with Governor Zuni
the Department was joined by special
guests, Chairperson Hickman and Native
American Liaison Tish Howard. At this
assembly Governor Zuni praised students
for their academic accomplishments.
Governor Zuni also encouraged students to
pursue a good life. Governor Zuni warmly
encouraged students through storytelling,
acknowledging, and listening. Governor
would award each Native American student
a stole and cord. Students heard stories
from Governor Zuni about how students
should choose a path that makes waking
up a blissful moment. Governor Zuni
continued acknowledging the outstanding
accomplishments that have been made
by graduating students. The Department
provided a lovely dinner featuring warm red
chile posole and soft airy bread. As students
and families enjoyed dinner Governor
Zuni talked to students. As Governor Zuni
listened to student expectations and hope
his eyes were warm and twinkling behind
his glasses. He displayed a gentle smile
listening to the future that awaits the
Native American students. The awards
assembly provide a moment for Native
American students and families to look
forward toward the future.
Valencia High School
The Department would journey to Valencia
High School for its Robing Ceremony.
Valencia High School introduced each
student. Governor Zuni and Chairwoman
Hickman joined Valencia High School and
Los Lunas Public School administration
on stage. Both Governor and Chairwoman
Hickman were both excited and happy
to see the outstanding accomplishments
made by Native American students. At this
ceremony Valenica students were presented
with various cords and scholarships that
they had earned during their high school
career. Students were honored for their
decision to enlist in the military. Governor
Zuni handed out cords, stoles, and
awards to Native American students. He
encouraged them and praised them on their
accomplishments. “Celebratory” effectively
describes the essence of the night.
The Department of Education continues
to hold a sense of awe and wonder at the
academic and personal achievement of our
Native American student population. With
tremendous efforts made by both students
and families the Department looks forward
to a future community guided by Native
American excellence. The Department also
continues to look toward another school
year where families, community members,
and our Department can collaborate and
innovate support for our Native American
students.
One focus of the “Good Road Series” is
language and culture. For this first meeting
Michael Jojola and Faron Candelaria spoke
to students about the importance of Tiwa.
Ta-Ta Jojola spoke to students about the
timelessness of Tiwa. He told students
of how our language has been with us
since the beginning and defines who
we are as a Pueblo. He told of how Tiwa
helps us understand our culture and the
world around us. Ta-ta Candelaria spoke
about how our language connects us as a
community. He encouraged students to
simply greet people in Tiwa. He continued
encouraging students to practice Tiwa. Both
men shared with students a grave concern
about Tiwa: the extinction of Tiwa. The
men shared that they do not want Tiwa to
disappear from our Pueblo. Students were
encouraged to learn Tiwa. Students were
also informed that together our community
can maintain the timelessness of Tiwa if
we speak it.
Mental Health will also be featured in
the “Good Road Series.” Students learned
about self-care. Students learned how
small activities such as taking a walk,
drinking water, and doing nothing can help
you maintain your mental health. Students
also learned how we must learn to think
positively about oneself. Students wrote
affirmations about themselves. These
affirmations helped students to learn to
see the positive in themselves rather than
always focusing on the negative. The selfcare feature truly helped students in their
pursuit of becoming the best version of
themselves.
The “Good Road Series” will continue to
have meetings throughout the summer.

SPORTS SECTION
We just finished up another Corn Hole
League in May and much like last year, it
was an exciting year. This year we had a
Couple’s League and there were 7 teams in
this league, the Wanna Bees (Lucas Jiron
and Miranda Yalch) were crowned the
champs of this league this year. In our Open
Division we had 9 teams and the Sicarios
(Cubathee Montoya and Brian Lente) were
the champs of the open division this year.
It was a fun and exciting Corn Hole season
again this year.
Our Youth Basketball Teams are going
strong. This year we have two youth co-ed
teams, a 9–10 year-old team and a 11–12
year-old team, and both of these/our teams
are competing in the Bernalillo County
Youth Basketball League this year. The
competition has been tough so far, but
our youth are playing tough, learning and
having fun competing. Playing in this
league has been and is going to be a very
good experience for our kids to see, the
competition level is a little higher than
what they have seen in the past, but we
feel that is a good thing for them. I want
to thank our volunteer coaches Cubathee
Montoya and Edmond Lucero, these
individuals are putting in their own time to
help teach, guide and cheer on the players
on our teams, it’s awesome to have them
help coach our youth. We have also started
this year’s Men’s basketball League; all
our games are played on Sundays from 10
am to 3pm. If you’re not doing anything
and you want to see some good basketball
games, come out and watch these games,
we would love to see you here. This year
we have 11 teams competing in our men’s
basketball league, along with the teams we
have from here, we also have teams from
Laguna Pueblo, Santa Anna Pueblo, Sandia
Pueblo, Bernalillo, Albuquerque and Los
Lunas. Once again, we would love to see
you here on Sundays to support our men’s
basketball league.

Attention Pueblo of Isleta
residents: Update from POI
Environment Department
Asbestos Program
Goals of the Asbestos Program
To educate the community about asbestos and
to prevent releases of asbestos-containing
building material (ACBM). Environment
Department performs building materials
inspections for demolition and general
renovation projects for homes within Pueblo
of Isleta reservation.
Protecting Your Health and Those
Around You
What is Asbestos? It is a natural mineral
fiber that is mined from the Earth. It was
used in many common building materials
for its strength and durability, insulation
properties, and fire resistance. Asbestos
is hazardous to human health and the
environment. Microscopic fibers are released
into the air when the materials are disturbed.
These fibers can enter the lungs when inhaled
and can damage the lung tissue.
Renovation or Demolition? What You
Need to Know Before You Start
This is a reminder to all households that a
building materials inspection is required
prior to any renovation or demolition
work. The purpose of a building materials
inspection is to rule out the presence of
asbestos-containing building material.
Asbestos is found in many building
materials, including but not limited to:
Window Glazing
Adhesive Material
Insulation
Roofing Material
Plaster and Stucco
Ceiling/Flooring Panels & Tiles
Penetration Sealant
Joint Compounds
Drywall Material
FUNDING NOW AVAILABLE
Tribal Council approved a budget using ARPA
funding to assist households with building
materials inspection, asbestos abatement
(if necessary), and demolition. The deadline
to get a household project on Environment
Department’s list is July 15, 2024.
If you are interested, have questions, or
would like to request a building materials
inspection, contact Environment Department
at 505-869-7565. At this time, properties in

MEDIA RELEASE FOR FREE MEALS FOR CEP
National School Lunch/Breakfast Program
School Year 2024-2025
The Isleta Elementary School announced today it will operate the
Community Eligibility Program (CEP) under the National School Lunch
Program and School Breakfast Program for the 2024-2025 school year.
Schools qualifying to operate CEP serve breakfast and lunch to all
children at no charge and eliminate the collection of meal applications
for free, reduced-price, and paid student meals. This new approach
reduces burdens for both families and school administrators and helps
ensure that students receive nutritious meals.

St. Augustine Religious
Education Program
Congratulations to our High School students
who received the Gifts of the Holy Spirit
through the Sacrament of Confirmation on
April 25th, and our children who received
the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist on April
27th. Father Milton Thomas and our
volunteer Religious Educators are honored
that we had the opportunity to teach
our Catholic faith to the children of our
community.
The students participated during each
Mass as readers and during the offertory
as gift bearers. We had 5 students receive
Confirmation, and 18 boys and girls receive
Holy Communion.
We were blessed to have Archbishop
John Wester celebrate the Mass for
Confirmation.
Archbishop Wester also
took time before the mass to speak with the
confirmation students and their sponsors.
We were very pleased to have Second Lt.
Governor Juan Rey Abeita say a few words
to the confirmation students before Mass,
and also Governor Max Zuni who spoke at
the First Communion ceremony.
We would like to express our sincere
gratitude and appreciation to our priest
Father Milton Thomas. He is not only
here for our children, but also for the whole
community. His door is always open for you
to visit.
Photographs have been snapped. Family
and friends have celebrated together. Gifts
have been opened. The signed, stamped

certificate has been presented. Years of
preparation are complete – culminating
in the holy sacrament of Confirmation or
Eucharist. The Eucharist is “the source
and summit of the Christian life,” for in the
blessed Eucharist is contained the whole
spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ
himself. As a family continue your faith life
and maintain a healthy balance by being a
part of the parish community each Sunday.
Remember, once a young person has
received Eucharist, he or she is eligible for
altar service. This ministry is a great way
for young people to learn more about the
Mass. Altar servers are also exposed to the
vocation of the priesthood and diaconate.
And young adults who have been confirmed
are encouraged to think about joining a
parish ministry like the choir or becoming
a lector. We welcome your participation in
our parish community. We will post dates
and times of ministry classes once they
have been scheduled.
Prayer for Kids
Honor your father and mother,
as the Lord your God has commanded you,
that it might go well with you on the land
which the Lord,
Your God gives you.
Father, open the eyes of our children.
May they know Your Will
and evade worldly deception.
Give them grace to follow Your Will.
Show them how to honor their parents,
that Your blessings may follow them
in this land.
Grant them good health and longevity . . .
Amen

JUNE – 2024
The sixth month of the year
is now upon us and where the
time has gone is beyond me.
A reminder the days have
become hotter, the winds
intermittent and gusty and
the children are out of school
and now……. let the summer games begin!
Motorists be aware with the release of
school children, young and old, are out and
about walking, biking, riding and/or driving
so please be cautious and conscientious
driver. The youth are so excited for vacation
time, they may forget the safety rules and
could cross your path so be ever vigilant
of your surroundings and avoid distracted
driving. If you are not paying attention to
the roadway but instead checking your cell
phone, you will not see the child darting
across the road for a stray soccer ball or
basketball.
The first day of summer is marked for June
20, 2024 and the summer solstice which
starts the beginning of the astronomical
summer is June 20-21. As we have been
noticing increasing temperatures in May,
one can be assured those temperatures will
continue to rise and there are precautions
to be taken. A few tips/reminders on staying
safe in the heat:
Law Enforcement. When I went to college,
I wanted to be Forensic Pathologist but I
decided that was not the career for me
because I wanted to be a first responder. I
am excited to start my career with Isleta
Pueblo and serve my community well.
Becoming a dispatch has been a dream come
true and I am truly honored to be here.
Thank you and have a wonderful day!
We welcome Collin Massey to our law
enforcement family.
Collin is excited to join the Pueblo of Isleta
Police Department as a Behavioral Sciences
Clinician. He is a licensed therapist in New
Mexico and has worked in mental health for
twenty years. Collin lives in Albuquerque
with his wife and three children. In his
spare time, Collin says he changes a lot of
diapers and attends church.
Hi! My name is Patrick Chavez and I’m
a new dispatcher here for Isleta Police
Department. I’m originally from here in
Isleta and my personal goal is to learn
my position and help the community. I’ve
always wanted to go into law enforcement
and I want to help my community as well.
My hobbies: I like to play my video games
on my days off to help me focus and take
my mind off things, I do like to cook as well,
and go to the gym when I have down time.
We welcome all of you to the “blue” family.

WELCOME TO THE LAW
ENFORCEMENT FAMILY
The Isleta Police Department has added a

A few fun facts about me are I love animals,
the color purple and Mexican food. Aside
from that I have always been interested in
Field Day at the Isleta Elementary School was held on May
15, 2024 and SRO R. Yzquierdo organized a few officers to
challenge the elementary students to a basketball game.
The students rallied valiantly but were no match for the
much older, taller……IPD team. Fun was had by all and
we look forward to the challenge in coming years.

Helping Your Adult
Family Member
Who Has an Addiction
Although you may be tempted to rescue, bribe,
pamper, scold, or threaten your adult family member
who continues to use and abuse alcohol and/or drugs,
this is not a helpful approach.
Families share experience, strength, and hope at
Al-non meetings. These meetings teach you how to
stop “enabling”. The word enabling means “allowing,
permitting, or aiding” the alcoholic/addict to stay in
their sickness and enabling keeps you, the family,
trapped in the problem. Enabling can make you
physically and emotionally sick and cause increased
stress with you and your home environment. Addiction
is not something that affects just the alcoholic/addict
but has a negative impact on the entire family and the
community.
No one wants their adult family member to suffer with
an addiction and your intentions to help are out of love
and concern. When enabling turns into an intervention,
things begin to change. It is time to take your focus off
the adult family member’s addiction and place it onto
yourself and your family. You regain power to make
meaningful choices about what you will do and what
you won’t do. Enabling does not teach responsibility.
You can contact Al-non at (505) 262-2177 and find out
the nearest location from your community to attend,
(IBHS does not provide transportation).

Task Force Releases New Breast
Cancer Screening Guidelines
Dr. Hadley Pope, Isleta Health Center Physician
Phone: 505-869-3200
On April 30th, 2024 the USPSTF (United States
Preventive Services Task Force) released new
guidelines for breast cancer screening in women.
The USPSTF is an organization made up of doctors
and disease experts who look at research on the best
way to prevent diseases and make recommendations
on how doctors can help patients avoid diseases or
find them early. The USPSTF is a highly respected
organization and their recommendations are used by
primary care providers all over the US to ensure our
patients are receiving the highest quality screenings
and medications, while also reducing the risk of
unnecessary screenings and medications.
2024 Fire Season
Pueblo of Isleta Fire Department
Fire season is here! The Isleta Pueblo Fire Dept. will be available to
assist and stand-by for community members with agricultural burns. Burn
permits are required, instructions on burn permit must be followed.
For more info contact the numbers listed below.
Fire Chief 505-869-9724
Isleta Dispatch 505-869-3030
The newly released USPSTF guidelines for breast
cancer screening recommend that women begin breast
cancer screening at 40 years of age. They recommend
mammogram as the best screening tool for breast
cancer and that women get mammograms done every
2 years through 74 years of age. The guidelines do not
make recommendations about continuing screening
in elders 75 and older, screening for women who
are at increased risk of breast cancer, or additional
screening, like MRI or ultrasound, in women who have
dense breasts. Instead, the task force recommends
that women 75+, those with increased cancer risk,
and women with dense breasts talk to their primary
care doctor to see what screening is best for them and
how often they should be screened for breast cancer.
Contact the Isleta Health Center at (505)869-3200 to
set up an appointment to talk with our primary care
providers about your breast cancer risk and breast
cancer screening.

CATARACT AWARENESS MONTH
Dr. Ryan Holiday, Optometrist, Isleta Health Center
Phone: 505-869-3200
JUNE IS CATARACT AWARENESS MONTH! It is
the perfect time to learn more about our eyes and how we
can maintain healthy, clear vision.
WHAT IS A CATARACT?
A cataract is a clouding or opacification of the natural lens
that sits inside the eye. This natural lens is responsible for
bending the light entering the eye to focus on the retina
for clear vision. When a cataract forms, the lens becomes
cloudy limiting and dispersing the light entering the eye.
This process can result in blurry vision, haloes around
lights, glare, difficulty driving at night, and sometimes
needing more light to see or read.
HOW DOES A CATARACT FORM?
A cataract usually forms naturally for everyone due to
natural aging processes and UV exposure from the sun
throughout one’s life. Sometimes a cataract can form
early due to trauma. Certain risk factors can increase the
chances of faster cataract progression including diabetes,
smoking, using steroids for long periods of time, and
certain eye conditions. In very rare cases, some cataracts
can occur in children also known as a “pediatric cataract.”
HOW IS A CATARACT TREATED?
Luckily, cataracts can be treated and vision restored in
the vast majority of cases with cataract surgery. During
surgery, the natural lens is removed and replaced
with an artificial lens. In most cases, cataracts can be
monitored on an annual basis till determined surgery will
be beneficial. However, waiting too long for surgery can
make the surgery more complicated if the cataract is far
progressed.
This is a reminder to have your eyes examined every
year or as recommended by your eye care professional to
maintain healthy eyes and vision!
Yolanda K. Olguin Chavez
12/16/1957-03/24/2024
The family and Husband of Yolanda would like
to thank everyone for their support in the loss of
someone very special who will be missed. She loved
her community and through her massage therapy
tried to make everyone better. Again, thank you to
everybody.
I asked God to send me someone
You drove down my road and never left
Ups and downs we went through
But we always made it
Your health took a turn for which there
Was no coming back
Twenty nine years later
I held your hand as you left me
The glimmer in your eyes
A sign that Heaven was waiting for you
We will see each other again

Stephanie.Barela@islclinic.net
Phone: 505-869-4479
The Isleta Health Center has collaborated with
Roadrunner Food Bank for nearly a year, since July
2023 and we have offered 10 Healthy Food Express
Food Distributions. These monthly food distributions
offered at the Chical Reception Hall on the 1st Friday
of the month has provided free, fresh food to families.
Since July 2023, these 10 Health Food Express Food
Distributions have provided food to at least 929*
households, affecting more than 1922* people. The
Healthy Foods Express is set up like a farmer’s market,
with fresh produce and other food items available
for individuals to select. At each event, any new
participant will fill out a Client Intake Form for their first
attendance and then in the future after the participant
registers 1 time, they will no longer have to register
again. Road Runner Food Bank needs participants to
register in order to show the need for the program and
to maintain state funding. If you have completed this
form before, then you are not required to complete this
again, unless the information was incorrectly input into
the computer or your information has changed. There
is also a Pick-Up Authorization form that is needed if
we are distributing food from TEFAP (The Emergency
Food Assistance Program), in order for you to pick
up food for other households. Food from TEFAP is
not always distributed, but it would be good if you are
planning to pick up food for others, to have this form
completed in case we are distributing TEFAP food that
day. The pick-up authorization form will be provided at
each event, or you can access the form in order to fill it
out before the distribution either on our website, www.
islclinic.com or from the Isleta Health Center.
Everyone is welcome to come to the Healthy Foods
Express Distribution at the Chical Reception Hall, so
