GOVERNOR’S REPORT
Gov. J. Robert Benavides
Ma Gu Wam,
Administration thanks the people who
showed up for the Community Meeting on
Saturday, October 14, 2017. The meeting
was quite informative however we were
not able to get through the entire agenda.
In preparation for the next Community
Meeting, items of concern will be included
for our next meeting. I hope to hold another
meeting during the early part of next year.
We provided a “comment” box and received
7 inquiries:
• “When was tribal road 90 going to
be paved”?
• Can a shade be built for the Library
and Department of Education property?
• There was a request of the Tribal
Council to publish the business of Tribal
Council in the newsletter
• Pay attention to the strides the
Elementary School is making for our
children
Administration oversees 44 Departments
and we depend on the Directors to inform
us of concerns affecting their programs.
The questions from the meeting are under
discussion and will be addressed at the next
meeting. The duties of the Governor and
my Lieutenants are 24-7 at the Federal,
State, Tribal, Surrounding Communities
and Isleta’s community issues. During

Transit Services
Coming to the
Pueblo of Isleta
12/4/17
The Pueblo of Isleta and the Rio Metro
Regional Transit District are pleased to
announce two new transit services beginning
Monday, December 4, 2017
Bus Route 208 will connect the Pueblo and Valencia
County communities to the Alvarado Transportation
Center (ATC) in Downtown Albuquerque during the
morning/midday when the Rail Runner does not
operate. Route 208 will feature three northbound trips
arriving at the ATC at 9:30am, 11:00am and 1:30pm,
and three southbound trips departing the ATC at
9:35am, 11:05am and 1:32pm. At the ATC, riders can
transfer to ABQ RIDE bus routes.
Route 208 will serve two bus stops on the Pueblo of
Isleta. The stop closest to the village proper will be
located on NM 147 just east of the Rio Grande bridge.
Please do not park and leave vehicles unattended on
the adjoining roads near this stop, as the bus and other
vehicles use these roads to turnaround and access
other locations. Route 208 will also stop at the Isleta
Pueblo Rail Runner Station, where riders can transfer
to the Isleta Resort and Casino shuttle. Because the
bus serves the station, riders can also consider using
Route 208 in combination with Rail Runner, for example,
taking the bus to Downtown Albuquerque in the midmorning and returning by train in the evening.
Rio Metro, again in partnership with the Pueblo of
Isleta, will also be bringing its Dial-a-Ride service to
the Pueblo. This reservation-only service will operate
on weekdays from 9:00am to 2:00pm, providing trips
within the Pueblo including the ABQ RIDE Route 53
bus stop on NM 314. Limited service to Wal-Mart in
Los Lunas will also be provided on Wednesdays from
11:00am to 2:00pm.
Reserve your Dial-a-Ride trip by calling Valencia
County dispatch at (505) 352-3595 before noon at
least one business day prior to your trip. Rio Metro
will accept reservations beginning Wednesday 11/29
for service starting 12/4. Reservations are accepted
between 8:00am and 5:00pm. On the date and time of
your trip, a wheelchair accessible van will arrive within
15 minutes of your scheduled pickup time. Trips may
also be grouped together; riders should expect to travel
with others.
For more information you are invited to attend a Public
Information Meeting on Tuesday November 14th, 2017
at 5:30pm the Isleta Golf Course. In addition, a copy of
the Route 208 schedule and news story is available online at riometro.org.

PUEBLO OF ISLETA
PUBLIC SERVICES DEPARTMENT
UTILITIES DIVISION
Winter is on the Way !
Colder temperatures and un-protected water lines
can be a disaster! Please take the time now to
properly drain your swamp cooler service lines, turn
off any frost free hydrants and install heat tape and/
or insulation on any exposed water lines to prevent
the lines from freezing, cracking or breaking.
Manufactured home owners need to check under
the home for exposed lines and ensure insulation is
sufficient to protect the water lines located there to
prevent freezing. Heat tape is a great way to help
protect the water lines as well, just be sure there
is an electrical outlet nearby to plug the heat tape
into.
There should be an isolation valve inside the home
to turn off the water supply to the entire house. If
a leak occurs prior to that valve, or the inside valve
does not work, the water will need to be shut off
outside the home, at the isolation valve that will
turn off the water service line coming from the
water main to your home.
Please test the interior isolation valve to make
sure it will work in an emergency situation. If you
can’t turn the valve off, or it turns off but does not
stop the water flow, you will need to have this valve
replaced as quickly as possible.
Locating the outside water service line isolation
valve is a necessity. If you don’t know where your
isolation valve is, please make time to locate it as
soon as possible. If your outside pipes do freeze
or break during the cold winter months, using the
isolation valve located outside the home is the only
way to quickly stop the flow of water.
The exterior isolation valve location needs to be
marked in some way so it can be quickly located in
the event the water supply to the property needs to
be shut off. Some ideas are to place a large rock
near the valve and paint the rock blue. Or use a
tall wooden stake to mark the spot and paint the
stake blue. This way any snow or tall weeds won’t
block your view of the marker, making it easier to
locate the valve in an emergency.
Some homeowners have a shut-off “key” and know
how to turn their water on and off themselves at the
isolation valve. Other residents do not have a “key”
and will have to contact the Utilities Division to
respond and turn off the water. Keep in mind this
will take time, especially if you call late at night in
an emergency situation.
Knowing where your isolation valve is located and
if it is working or not will save a lot of time and
potential damage to your property from any water
leaks. Finding the isolation valve can take a long
time, especially when water is pouring out of the
pipe damaging your home and property. It is the
homeowner’s responsibility to know where the
isolation valve is and to have it tested to make sure
it will operate in an emergency. Valves can fail
due to age and lack of being exercised leading to
additional time and effort to shut the water off.
Take the time now while you are thinking about
this and find your inside water isolation valve and
see if it will work in an emergency. Next go outside
and find the valve that will turn off the water to
your property. If you need assistance, contact the
Public Services Department, Utilities Division at
505-869-9782. Better to do this now than to wait
for help to arrive in the event pipes are damaged
and it becomes an emergency.
If you have an after-hours emergency, you will need
to contact Isleta Police Department dispatch, nonemergency number of 505-869-3030. Dispatch
will contact the Utilities Division on-call staff and
someone will respond as soon as possible.

Car Seat Clinics
Health Educator, Stephanie Barela

Have you ever been to a Car Seat Clinic?
What is it? Why do we have them?
The purpose of a Car Seat Clinic, also known
as a Child Safety Seat Check, is to educate
parents, grandparents and guardians on
properly installing and proper use of their
child/grandchild’s car seat. If the car seat is
expired, recalled or not appropriate for the
child, there is a possibility that the car seat
may be replaced if there are seats available,
a replacement seat is $20. A car seat check
does not just give car seats away. There
are guidelines we must go by and we are not
allowed to give away car seats freely. If you
are in need of a replacement seat, due to
your seat being expired or inappropriate for
you child, there is a $20 replacement free.
Our Child Passenger Safety Technicians
(Frances Anchondo-869-4482 and Stephanie
Barela-869-4479)
are
available
by
appointment year round. Each appointment
can take up to an hour. Your child and the car
seat MUST be present in order complete the
car seat check. During each Car Seat Check,
we will Inspect – Install – Educate:

2.
3.
4.

6.
Demonstrate the correct installation
Check for expired child car seats and

Review the suitability of the child car

Discuss injury prevention
Answer any questions
Why is it important to use Child Safety
Seats for your child?
Motor vehicle injuries are the leading cause
of death among children in the United States,
but many of these deaths can be prevented.
Placing children in age- and size-appropriate
car seats and booster seats reduces serious
and fatal injuries by more than half, according
to the Centers of Disease Control (www.CDC.
com). In the United States during 2009, 1,314
children ages 14 years and younger died as
occupants in motor vehicle crashes, and
approximately 179,000 were injured. One
CDC study found that in one year, more than
618,000 children ages 0-12 rode in vehicles
without the use of a child safety seat, booster
seat or a seat belt at least some of the time.
Not only are parents not insuring the child to
be in a safety seat, but if they do put them in a
safety seat, it is usually used incorrectly. One
study found that 72% of nearly 3,500 observed
car and booster seats were misused in a way
that could be expected to increase a child’s
risk of injury during a crash. Not only do we
see national studies that show a high number
of car seats being incorrectly installed, but
every year at Isleta Health Center’s Car Seat
Clinic’s, we see many car seats incorrectly
installed. In past Car Seat Clinics in Isleta,
there have been high misuse rates. This
shows how important it is to get your child’s
car seat checked, to insure the safety of it.
Come to the car seat clinic on November
17, 2017 from 9-11am at Isleta Head Start
and Childcare, to insure that your child
is safe in their car seat. Call 869-4479 to
make an appointment.

Student of the Month - Natalie Jojola
Ma Gu Wam
My name is Natalie Jojola also known as “Doodle”. I am the oldest
child of Patrick and Joanna Jojola. I have two siblings, a 12-year
old sister Denise, and a younger brother named Tino. Currently,
I am a Freshman (9th Grade) at the Los Lunas High School and
was recently selected as Student of the Month! Upon receiving
this honor, I was informed that I was the first Native American
student of this school year to receive this award. Both Mrs. and
Mr. Benavidez nominated me. Mr. Benavidez has complimented
me that I have a good attitude and appreciates that I say, “Good
Morning” to him every day with a big smile on my face. Mrs.
Benavides has complimented my cheerful personality, she said
it makes her happy to teach. It
makes me feel good to know that
I can brighten people’s days. I
really enjoy school but I have
two amazing interests which are
basketball and reading the bible.
I enjoy basketball because it
is such an amazing sport. I
was honored and privileged
to be a part of the Los Lunas
High School Varsity basketball
team when I was in 8th grade.
Reading the bible provides me
guidance. Both of these keep
me healthy and strong. I hope
I can be an inspiration and role
model to other Native American
students on their quest to fulfill
their dreams, I am proud to
represent the Pueblo of Isleta.

Ms. Natalie Jojola
Submitted by Mr. Ben Analla
I have been associated with Freshman here at Los Lunas High
School for the past months since school started and have also
found her as most talented, respectful, motivated, disciplined,
and courteous young lady among our student body. She is
an individual who exemplifies a strong affirmative character in
leadership in our school and the community of Isleta Pueblo.
Recently she was one of our LLHS Native American Club
members who volunteered her services to assist the Isleta
Pueblo Elder Center, Arts and Craft Fair held at the Isleta Resort
and Casino and did an excellent job! As a Freshman, Ms. Jojola
is also a Tiger basketball member who is looking forward to the
upcoming basketball season. All her teachers speak highly of
her character and academically carries a 4.00 GPA.
We also congratulate Natalie’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick /
Joanna Jojola whom support her in her daily academics and
culture traditions.

Pueblo of Isleta Elementary School
October is flying by as the classroom
instruction and the Fall Activities continue
at the Pueblo of Isleta Elementary School.
One of these activities is School Spirit
Days. They occur on the Early Wednesday
Dismissal Days. All students and staff are
encouraged to participate, and each day
has a special theme. On October 6th we
honored Breast Cancer Survivors and wore
“Pink.” We have also hosted “Disney Day,”
by wearing Disney costumes and/or our
favorite Disney apparel and “Sports Day”
wearing our favorite team’s jersey.

being made for a Summer Camp in 2018.
The school hosted guests from “Down

Australians visited the school to learn about
our students and our Tribal Education
Program. They visited with the Third
Graders during their Tiwa Language Class

FROM THE DESK OF Arnold Sena (PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT DIRECTOR):
I’m sure that all of you have noticed the season change. It’s getting
colder outdoors and the leaves are changing colors or falling off the
trees. It’s time for all of us to start getting ready for the cold, so make
sure and bundle up your children as well as yourselves. Do your best
to stay healthy this winter.
October was a busy month for us, as usual we had our everyday
activities (After school Youth Rec Program, Spin Classes, Swimming
Pool Activities, Fitness Instructors Helping Tribal Members, etc.) taking
place daily but we also hosted our Annual Halloween Carnival.
The carnival was well attended as usual and I really need to thank
everyone who helped with the event. Hosting and putting together
events like these takes a lot of work and requires lots of planning,
organizing and coordination. I want to take this opportunity to thank
my staff for all that they do for the Parks & Recreation Department
and the Pueblo. Great Job Everyone!
We have started a scouting troop in the pueblo. The Scouting Troop
is open to both boys and girls and any parents that are interested
in helping out as well. The meetings are currently being held every
Monday evening for 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. The more people we have in
the Troop the better. We are currently in the early stages and everyone
involved is learning together. I foresee good things for this program in
the future and as of right now it’s all free to any participants, thanks
to the Parks & Recreation Department and LT. Governor Zuni. We
have committed to paying any registration fees and material fees for
the program this year and if the turnout continues to grow I’m hopeful
that we will be able to do so again next, provided that the funding is
still available. Come by and see what this program is all about. If your
child or children like what they see sign them up.
Great Books at Rec Center
Time. Our staff here at the center knows how important education is
to our youth and they want to do their part to help foster the education
process of the youth in our Pueblo community.
I want to publically thank our afterschool program staff for making
their dream become a reality for our youth. If you have time, stop in
at the rec center to take a look at the great books that were donated
for this worthy cause. I attached a picture so you can see what they
produced.
If any of you have any new or gently used age appropriate books
that you would like to donate to the center to help expand our library,
please feel free to bring them to the center.
Keep in mind that the staff does lots of other great activities planned
for the participants that attend the program as well.
Great job everyone!
This past month we were also able to sponsor quite a few tribal
members to run or walk in this year’s Duke City Marathon. Between
the Parks & Recreation Department and the Tribal Committee we
sponsored a total of 46 individuals this year. It was awesome to
see that many individuals from the tribe participate in the marathon.
I’m sure there were more tribal members that participated on their
own as well. Every year we have more and more people wanting to
participate in this event, but unfortunately due to the limited funding
we (Parks & Recreation Department) have available we are unable to
sponsor everyone, but thanks to the help of the Tribal Committee we
were able to sponsor 26 more this year, which was awesome. We
really appreciate their help and support and we hope that they are
able to help again next year, that is if funding is available.
Our afterschool program is going well! We currently have over 40
participants registered in this year’s afterschool recreation program
and approximately 30 of those registered participants attend on a
daily basis.
This year the afterschool program staff (LeeAnne Zuni, Meredith
Platero, Kim Chiwewe and Keenan Gurule) really wanted to try to
create a small library of books here at the center so the kids in the
program will have books to read for the afterschool program. So
the staff contacted an organization in Albuquerque that was willing
to donate books to the center to help make this small library idea of
theirs become a reality. The organization willingly donated lots of
books to the center. We also got a generous donation of books from
The Pueblo of Isleta Library (Nathen Lujan) as well. With the help
of these generous donors we were able to start a small library for the
participants here at the recreation center.
Thanks to the staff’s great idea and all their hard work and persistence,
the participants in the after school recreation program now have age
appropriate books to read during their daily Homework and/or Reading
The Parks crew keeps doing a great job with the parks and other
facilities around the pueblo like always. The aquatics staff is working
on their fall schedule, so keep your eyes open for upcoming classes.
My fitness instructors are working hard like always trying to keep
tribal members healthy and fit with spin classes, putting people on
programs, working people out and working out with people, setting up
cross country meets, and providing good solid advice when needed,
they are also continuing to work with the Elders in our community to
provide fitness opportunities to meet their needs as well. The Rec
staff just keeps plugging away by providing good solid programs and
activities for the youth that attend our afterschool programs daily.
Everyone associated with the after school program pitches in to offer
their expertise. The Nanas are doing their thing as well; they put
together arts & crafts projects for the kids to participate in twice a
week. Last but not least my facilities maintenance person does a
great job of keeping up with our center and keeping it looking good
for all patrons that use our facility daily. THANK YOU ALL FOR THE
GREAT WORK YOU DO FOR ALL OF US HERE IN THE PUEBLO!!!
Parks & Recreation Department Notes to be Aware of:
• They will be giving out Turkeys again this year so keep your
eyes open for more information on this. It’s my understanding
that they will be giving the Turkeys out on Tuesday, November
14th and Wednesday, November 15th, 2017. I believe the
distribution time will be 8 am to 6 pm. Once again keep your
eyes and ears for more information on this.
• The Parks Crew has shut off the water fountains in the parks
for the winter season. As all of you probably know this is done
every year to keep the fountains and the water lines from freezing
and busting. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
• We have also removed port-a-potties from the following parks
(Church, Mousetown, Pickle Heights and Parks/Fields around
the Rec. Center). After talking with my parks superintendent
we determined that the port-a-potties at these parks are rarely
used during the winter months, so for budgetary reasons we are
having them removed from the parks we listed. I hope that this
does not cause too much of an inconvenience. Once again,
thank you for your understanding.
• Our Youth (Boys or Girls) Basketball sign ups have started. If
you have children interested in signing up for the boys or girls
Basketball Teams you can call the Rec Center at 869-9777 and
talk to Keenan Gurule (Girls Team Coach) or John Matt Jojola
(Boys Team Coach).
As always if you have any concerns, questions or if you need any
additional information please feel free to contact us at the New Rec
Center at 869-9777. I would love to hear from you!

U.S. of A. came to being involved in a Nuclear War!!! If you do not know what the Cuban Missile Crisis is
or was, then visit your local Public Library, ask a Veteran, or talk to your Teah-eh and / or Chee-ee before
going back to sleep for that extra hour.

Recap
Our Haunted Book Club concluded on
October 28th with a field trip to the Belen,
NM Harvey House during a special Ghost
Tour hosted by Purple Sage and New Mexico
Paranormal. A total of 10 adults and Library
staff members Diane and Ashley attended
the field trip. Discussions on the book took
place on Tuesdays and crafts inspired by
the book took place on Thursdays in the
month of October. We would like to thank
the participants for the lively discussions,
personal theories, and ghost stories told
during the book club meetings. It made the
book clubs meetings more fun!
On October 12th we hosted a Creepy Snack
featuring Goosebumps Punch. Library
staff member Diane showed everyone how
to make a fast and delicious Goosebumps
inspired punch. The punch was made of
7up, sherbet and gummy worms to make it
extra scary, but not as scary as taking home
sugared up kids! This program was open
to everyone and sign up was not required.
Thank you to everyone who attended and
enjoyed a spooky delicious drink.
For our first Homework Help Incentive Field
Trip we took the students to the Water Park
at the Wyndham Hotel in Albuquerque.
The students were treated to Furr’s Buffet
after swimming for a couple of hours. The
Library staff has helped the children stay on
track with homework in hopes they succeed
in every way possible. We do keep track of
the students in our program when they tell
us they do not have homework so parents
if they are going home with homework and
wondering why, we have it documented. Of
course if you have any concerns or issues
please let us know and we will address it.
We can be contacted at 505.869.9808.
Your Library was recognized! We were
a location of a tour which was featured
during the Association of Tribal Archives,
Libraries, & Museums Conference on
October 10th. We had 29 people visiting
from all over the United States including
Hawaii, Washington, Oklahoma, and
Canada. They toured our facility and got a
glimpse of our Homework Help program.
On October 12th Nathaniel Lujan and
Tara Abeita gave a presentation on
Library Programs at the Association of
Tribal Archives, Libraries, & Museums
Conference held at the Tamaya Resort
in Santa Ana Pueblo, along with Laguna
Pueblo Library. Our session topic was
“Keeping the Community Engaged: Public
Programming in Tribal Libraries” in which
we gave a 20 minute presentation on our
successful programs and how we developed
them. We had roughly 20 people attend
from libraries all over the nation. We were
humbled to have this opportunity to share
our Library knowledge, our programs, and
our community with others.
Halloween Cake Pops took place on October
25th where Library staff member Christino
showed families and students the process
of making cake pops. We had a good turn
out and everyone left with yummy treats!
Thank you to everyone who attended and
learned how to make an easy Halloween
treat.

Isleta Pueblo Veterans
The below list is a further attempt by the Pueblo of Isleta Veterans Association to compile a complete, and as possibly accurate, list of
POI veterans. We do realize that there may be some names that have been left off the list; some names that are on the list that should
not be there…and if you know of any names that should be…or shouldn’t be on the list…please call Fred Lujan at 573-3733, or Ulysses
Abeita at 264-4110, or e-mail to uly2238mc@gmail,com.
If you know of any POI members on active duty, please send their names, and short bio. Also, if you know of any POI member who has
been deployed, please send us their address. POIVA will forward the address to the Blue Star Mothers who will send “care” packages.

Isleta Resort & Casino unveiled its newly
redesigned porte cochére in October, giving
guests a glimpse into the future as the
Resort’s $40 million renovation continues.
With brighter and lighter colors, the new
area features slot machines, large windows,
artistic details, and much more. The Resort
offers its sincere thanks and gratitude to
Isleta Resort & Casino team members who
worked diligently to make this part of the
renovation a success.
“We would also like to offer our thanks to
Tribal Council and the Administration,
as well as the entire Pueblo of Isleta
community, for allowing us the opportunity
to enhance the property and the gaming
experience of our guests,” said Isleta Resort
& Casino CEO Harold Baugus.
The next phase of the construction includes
a new Bingo facility, as well as a redesigned
and enlarged Triple Sevens Saloon. The
renovation is a “Design-build,” meaning
the concept and design are created as the
construction continues. However, the resort
expects to continue to share renderings
and plans with the community, as they are
completed.
The new entrance was completed in time
for the upcoming busy holiday season,
which includes the 5th Annual Pueblo
Market, taking place Saturday November
25th in the Isleta Hotel. This large event
highlights the works of Pueblo of Isleta
artisans, as well as that of pueblo artisans
from around the state of New Mexico and
Arizona.
Guests arriving for this event and others
will enjoy the Resort’s annual holiday
décor, including a 60-foot tall Christmas
tree, large gingerbread house display, and
of course, free visits with Mr. & Mrs. Claus.
Santa is expected to be available during the
following times:
11/25/17 & 11/26/17: 12 Noon – 3pm
12/2/17 & 12/3/17: 12 Noon – 3pm

Flu Season Is Here!
WHAT IS THE FLU?
AND WHO NEEDS THAT FLU SHOT?
The flu is an illness, also called influenza,
which many people get during November to
April. It can cause fever, chills, body aches,
and a cough. It usually lasts about 2-3 weeks,
but for some people it could last longer and
make them very sick. The people at high risk
for complications are:
• Babies and kids under 5
• People older than 65
• Adults and kids who have health
problems, such as diabetes or asthma
These individuals definitely need a flu shot,
but it is also important for everyone else to get
a flu shot so they are less likely to get the flu
and less likely to transfer it to someone who is
more at risk.
DO I NEED A FLU SHOT EVERY YEAR?
Yes, even if you got a flu shot last flu season,
you will need to get a new shot this season
because every year the flu virus changes and
a new vaccine will be helpful in fighting the
new strain.
WHAT IF I GET THE FLU?
If you start to feel the symptoms of the flu
(fever, chills, body aches, cough), and are in a
high risk category, then you may want to go to
the Isleta Health Center. You can also start
taking these steps to feel better:
•
Get a lot of rest
• Drink lots of liquids (water, chicken
broth, and other clear fluids)
• Take medicine your doctor may have
prescribed you, or just take certain over
the counter drugs to help ease your fever,
aches, and pains
• You may need to see a doctor if you
have trouble breathing, your muscles hurt,
or you feel confused

Mental Health First Aid:
Trainers Certification
Indian Health Services (IHS) Albuquerque Area
Office sponsored two Mental Health First Aid
(MHFA) trainings during the month of October
- one for Adults and one for Youth (13 – 18 years
old). The IBHS Program took advantage of this
opportunity through our Methamphetamine
and Suicide Prevention Initiative (MSPI) Grant.
Through this opportunity, we now have two IBHS
Staff who are certified to teach both of these Mental
Health First Aid courses. Through the two-week
trainings, participants were taught by National
MHFA trainers. Participants were evaluated
on Section Presentations and then tested for
knowledge and ability to use Mental Health First
Aid materials.
Both Adult and Youth Mental Health First Aid
are 8-hour courses that teach how to identify,
understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses
and substance use disorders. The training provides
the skills needed to give initial help and support
to someone who may have a mental health or
substance use problem or who may be experiencing
a crisis. Just as CPR training helps a person with
no clinical training assist an individual following
a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid training
helps a person assist someone experiencing a
mental health crisis. The goal is to provide support
to an individual until appropriate professional
help arrives. Mental Health First Aiders learn
a single 5-step strategy that includes assessing
risk, respectfully listening to, and supporting the
individual in crisis until appropriate professional
help is arranged. Participants are also introduced
to risk factors and warning signs for mental health
or substance use problems, engage in experiential
activities that build understanding of the impact of
illness on individuals and families, and learn about
evidence-supported treatment as well as self-help
strategies.
Furthermore, trainees are taught how to apply the
5-step action plan in a variety of situations such as
helping someone through a panic attack, engaging
with someone who may be suicidal, or assisting
an individual who is experiencing psychosis. An
important component of the Mental Health First
Aid course is the opportunity to practice the
intervention strategy rather than to just learn
about it. This simple experience can make it easier
to actually apply the knowledge in a real-life
situation.
Now that the Pueblo of Isleta has two trainers for
Adult MHFA and Youth MHFA, training is more
readily available for Community Members and
Tribal employees of all disciplines. Once trained,
MHFA helps people (family, friends, community,
and workers) recognize those who need help most.

Elder Center
Happy November from the Elder Center!
We have had such a busy October that
we are stunned that November is already
here. We hope everyone is enjoying the
cooler temperatures like we are. October
at the Elder Center was very busy with
the preparation of two very big events we
hosted, the Arts & Crafts fair, as well as
hosting the New Mexico Indian Council
on Aging Quarterly Meeting. Our Arts &
Crafts fair was a tremendous success! We
had 100+ vendors and many visitors walked
through the halls of the Isleta Casino and
Resort looking to take home beautiful hand
crafted jewelry and delicious home baked
goods. We would like to thank all of the
vendors for choosing our Arts & Crafts show
to sell with. We would also like to thank all
of our spectators who came out to see all
of the crafts as well as buy raffle tickets
from the staff. We raffled off donated items
from our vendors which every year is such
a success. We hope to see our vendors back
for our 2018 Arts & Crafts Fair.
On Saturday October 22nd, our very
dedicated Isleta Shuffleboard team traveled
to Mountainair where they were a part of
the Billie Stephens Memorial Shuffleboard
tournament. Near or far, the shuffleboard
team will make sure they are in attendance
to play the sport they love. Great job on
showing up and playing your hardest! For
anyone who is interested in learning or
practicing shuffleboard, please come to the
practices we have set up in the activities
room on Monday mornings. Get hands-on
learning from some of our community’s best
shuffle boarders! Also during the month of
November we will be having shuffleboard
practice at the new recreation center at
5:30pm. If you would like to practice, you
MUST call the rec center the day of. If you
would like to practice at the elder center on
another day beside our scheduled Mondays,
please come in on an open activities day
and Monique will be happy to assist you.
Finally our long awaited Laughlin trip has
come and gone. This year we had 16 elders
take advantage of the great travel deal that
Herrera Coaches has to offer. The Laughlin
trip is 4 days and 3 nights. Our elders stayed
at the Tropicana Laughlin Hotel and Casino
where they were able to sightsee, enjoy
delicious meals and see live entertainment
at the hotel. This trip is a great opportunity
to have a fun vacation at a low cost. Thank
you to everyone who participated and we
are glad to hear you had a wonderful time!
We hope to have YOU join us next year.
Coming up this month…
This month we will begin a new series of
Bingo trips to the Sandia Resort and Casino.
On Wednesdays Sandia offers FREE, yes
I said it, FREE bingo to those who are 55
years of age and older. We will have lunch
at the casino (lunch is on your own) and
then play bingo. These trips are for the
specific purpose of playing bingo, we kindly
ask that you do not play the machines
inside the casino. The Elder Center does
not encourage the spending of money on
gambling.
On November 18, Ron Sarracino will
be hosting another AARP Safe Drivers
Course. For those of you who did not make
it for his past classes, please sign up for
our November class. Ron Sarracino teaches

Quick Facts:
•
Cigarette butts are toxic to our ocean
animals and to us.
•
Cigarette filters are made of celluloseacetate, which is not biodegradable.
•
According to San Diego State University
Public Health Professor Tom Novotny, “Even
one butt in a liter of water can kill the fish in a
period of 96 hours.”
•
Ocean animals like crabs and salmon
can then filter toxins into their systems and
transmit the toxins to humans when the
animals are eaten.
•
Over time these toxins can affect human
health.
It is time to stop the “Butt Cycle.” There
needs to be a shift in individual and collective
thinking to classify cigarette butts as toxic
waste and they should be disposed of in a
way that does not hurt our environment.

Breastfeeding During
Emergencies
Around the world and throughout history
mothers and their infants have experienced
emergencies of every kind. Whether it’s
from natural disasters, war and violence,
or unexpected family events, breastfeeding
can save lives. Did you know that…
1.
In emergency situations almost 95%
of infant and child deaths are caused
by diarrhea from contaminated water
and an unsanitary environment.
2.
Infant formula requires sanitary water
and fuel to sterilize bottles, nipples
and the formula itself. Water and
electricity are often compromised
during emergency situations.
3.
Human milk is full of antibodies that
fight infection and lowers your
baby’s risk and severity of illness.
4.
Breastfeeding releases hormones
that help lower stress for both mom
and baby.
5.
Mothers who are stressed and
malnourished can still make plenty
of milk for their babies.
For more info visit http://www.
usbreastfeeding.org/emergencies
Benefits of Breastfeeding
During Emergencies
1.
No worries about contaminated
formula or water for baby.
2.
Breast milk is always accessible and
at the right temperature.
3.
Consistent warmth and comfort
for baby during a stressful time..
4.
Helps keep baby healthy so you have
one less thing to worry about.
Make a Plan
Ask yourself these questions to
get started:
1. How will I get emergency alerts and
notifications?
2. What is my shelter plan?
3. What is my evacuation route?
4. What is my family/household
communication plan?
