September 2011
From the Desk of Governor Frank Lujan
August is ending and with it comes our annual St. Augustine Feast
day followed by the St. Augustinito Feast in September. We all look
forward to these celebrations as we continue to honor our patron
Saint, St. Augustine. We now have full use of our church again and
this year’s feast will began a new era. Let’s all come together and
celebrate, enjoy, and continue on with our traditional ways.
Let me back up a bit to July 30, the date on which I delivered the
State of the Pueblo Address. We issued a Special Edition of the
Newsletter and printed the speech in its entirety. For those you
who would like a copy of the speech, you may pick up a copy at our
office. We still have a few available.
I just want to once again give a big THANK YOU to all of you who
volunteered to make the The St. Augustine Re-Dedication a huge
success. It was estimated that over 1000 people attended. A special
thank you to Ms. Shirley Zuni and my staff, Carmella, Elaine, and
Laura, the St. Augustine Restoration Committee, and all others
who all orchestrated the re-dedication event. What a huge success
as evidenced by the stories published in the Albuquerque Journal
and the Valencia County News. I found out that the evening news
in Los Angeles also reported this event. Awesome.
On August 25, 2011, we received from the Bureau of Indian Affairs
their approval of the revised Residence Ordinance enacted by the
Tribal Council on July 5, 2011. What this means is that we will now
begin enforcing the Ordinance. My Lieutenants, my staff and I will
develop a process to make it easy and least stressful as possible. The
applications are for permission to reside and consent to continue
to reside. As was requested during the community meeting, and I
agreed, a meeting will be scheduled as soon as possible to provide
you with additional information as we move forward. We will post
date, time, and location. Please be patient with us.
the Pueblos, Nations and Tribes. This meeting is pursuant to the
enactment of the State-Tribal Collaboration Act signed by then
Governor Bill Richardson. It is intended to strengthen government
to government relationships with tribal governments. We intend
to present to Governor Martinez our issues relating to water,
economic development, health, and education. We were to provide
four topics however. We will include and ask the State to maintain
the Tribal Infrastructure Fund, and the Capitol Improvement
Project funds. This is where we get assistance for projects we are
undertaking, for example, the Long Term Care Facility. We want
to use this meeting for us to introduce ourselves to her and her
cabinet secretaries to further and establish a meaningful working
relationship with the State. I am looking forward to this meeting.
The Tribal Council approved a Per Capita distribution of $1,200.
The date is October 4, 2011, one day only. The date has been
moved up to help with school children in need of school supplies
and clothes and other needs you may have. In addition, we made
a recommendation and the Tribal Council approved a one time
5% Cost of Living Payment for Pueblo of Isleta employees except
for those who are in elected, appointed and employees who do not
qualify as a result of their employment status, however. I want
to express my sincere appreciation to the council as employees
have not seen any pay adjustments for quite some time. We are
experiencing economic hardships and this will help some with
your needs. Thank you to the employees. Know that you are
appreciated.
Lt. Torres, Vice President Joseph Lucero, Sec. Barbara Sanchez,
Councilwomen Regina Zuni and I will be attending the State
- Tribal Summit at Buffalo Thunder on Monday, August 29,
2011, meeting with Governor Susana Martinez along with other
Governors, Presidents, and Chairmen of other Pueblos, Nations,
and Tribes to present to Governor Martinez issues pertaining to
In closing, this is the best time of year for me. Chiles are roasting,
football will start, hunting, and other fall and winter activities.
School has started and I know the summer went by so quick. I
hope you all had a wonderful summer and now look forward to
this school year. As always, we are here to help you the students
and the parents in any way we can. Call my office or call the
other departments should you need assistance. Do not be shy and
PLEASE stay in school. You are preparing yourself for your future,
preparing yourselves for a career, and setting your sights for a
bright future. But mainly have FUN. I’ve got to say this with no
disrespect to other schools, “GO TIGERS”.

St. Augustine Church
Rededicated — Thank You!
Submitted by Alan Cherino,
Church Preservation Committee Co-Chair
The Rededication event of the St. Augustine
Church was a huge success! We estimate
that approximately 1100 people attended
the event. This was a historic event for
the Pueblo of Isleta. Just think, when will
our people ever restore the church again
of this magnitude and rededicate it as a
place of worship? Maintenance work and
improvements will come in future years,
but a complete restoration? Probably not
for another 150 years or more!
The Church tells a story of our people since
the arrival of the Spaniards. What they were
looking for and the difficult relationship
among the Pueblo and Spanish people in
these early years of the New World have
been told over and over by many historians.
I won't go into that but I will say that what
the Spaniards left behind was a legacy of
worship that our People have not only
adopted but have also integrated into our
Pueblo lives. So while the church tells us
some of our history, we have also become
part of its history by being part of the
Isleta community who saw the Church's
Restoration and Rededication event come
alive!
Planning the Rededication event for August
13 was a huge endeavor that took several
weeks of planning and coordination.
Archbishop Michael Sheehan was very
pleased with the day's events and quite
proud of Isleta's efforts to restore the church.
Following the Rededication Mass, our
traditional Isleta fiesta meal was served to
the public along with several Native dance
performances, and a running slide show of
the church's restoration. Thank you to all
who helped plan, contribute, and work the
day's activities!
With respect to the Rededication Planning
Committee, I want to thank Governor
Lujan and his Lt. Governors, their Tribal
Administration staff, Police Chief Alvarez
and his staff of officers, Fr. George and
the St. Augustine Parish Community, the
St. Augustine Choir, and Sara Zuni for
her beautiful photography! Thank you
very much for all your time, your effort,
your hard work, your dedication, and your
contributions. And a huge THANK YOU to
Shirley Zuni and her assistants who worked
very hard and long hours keeping the rest
of us on track and coordinated to deliver
such a beautiful Rededication Mass and a
day of celebration.
There were many people involved in restoring
the church. Several key individuals and
committees were acknowledged during the
Rededication Mass. However, we neglected
to acknowledge some of own Isleta people
who were hired as part of the contractor's
restoration crew. I'm glad that some of our
people were given an opportunity to actually
work and rebuild the church. Individuals
who actually worked on the church "handson" were Jose Olguin, David Trujillo,
Nathan Jiron, Dominic Jojola, Derek Jojola,
Charles Zuni and Ronald Olguin. You guys
did an outstanding job! Thank you!
Thank you to the Isleta Tribal Administration
— past and present. Our Tribal Governors
and the Tribal Council have always been
supportive of our efforts and endeavor to
see this project to the end.
I also want to thank the Restoration
Planning Committee which was comprised
of the project manager, Neil Carter, Ed
and Jess Crocker (restoration contractor),
the Tribal Planning Office, the Tribal
Procurement Office, the Culture Committee,
and the Church Preservation Committee.
The Planning Committee met bi-monthly
throughout the entire project duration.
We discussed and evaluated options and
made some tough decisions along the
way — all with good intentions in mind.
I am personally grateful for the Cultural
Committee’s participation and input in
these meetings. Their advice and guidance
was valuable. Thank you!
And finally, I am very grateful for my
Church Preservation Committee who came
together in 2004 with a vision to save St.
Augustine from a future catastrophe of
falling. We did not know whether the church
would fall and if it were to happen, we could
not predict when. However, take note of the
more recent tragedies of several churches
in New Mexico that have fallen and had
to be closed until they can be restored.
Some are being restored now and some are

still searching for restoration solutions.
I’m glad we did not wait for something like
to this happen to St. Augustine. I offer a
special thank you to Gene Jojola (my cochair) and Fr. Hilaire for hanging in there
with me on this committee and not giving
up on our vision. I’m also glad that Fr.
George came along when we needed him
in our committee and parish as well. Other
committee members who helped along
the way, at one time or another, were
Cynthia Jaramillo, Ernest Jaramillo, and
Dr. Ted Jojola. And, a word of thanks to
Cornerstones Community Partnerships
of Santa Fe, too. They got us started and
helped forge our committee to understand
what needed to be done.
Thank you all! May our Gracious Lord
bring you many blessings!
Congratulations to Cyrus Jiron

but since Cyrus caught
him on a Wednesday
that doubled the
value of "Mudcat" to

Happy Fiesta and Labor Day, people of the Island. I hope everyone is ready for the new football season
and may your favorite football team/players have a good season. Most importantly, may your team give
them Dallas Cowboys a beat down on the “Grid Iron”!
NEWS
In last month’s newsletter, the library
announced that it would be taking down
the shelves in preparation of moving to the
new library/educational complex. Well,
we still have not moved, but our shelving
has been taken down and the books as well
as the other library material are all boxed
up. However, this does NOT mean that the
library is closed; it just means our services
are limited. Our computer lab is still open
and we are still offering tutoring services as
all schools are now in full swing of things.
If Xerox copies are what you need, you are
still more than welcome to come by to fulfill
your needs.
Starting September 6, the library will
extend its hours of service to 6:30pm for
those extra hours of tutoring services and
internet needs. The library will return to
its normal business hours of operation when
we open up the new library complex which
should take place sometime in the month of
September.
Overdue notices and fine notices have
been sent to those patrons who still have
library material out or have an outstanding
account. If books are returned, fines will
be waived if books are not damaged. If
fines are a result of lost, damaged, or late
multi-media material, please talk with the
librarian about your fine to possibly work
out a solution.
UPCOMING
The library is thinking about starting a book
club, but instead of using normal books, we
are looking into purchasing five to ten nook
colors from Barnes and Noble. This way we
can introduce the interactive books, Vooks
(Video Books), and other formats of books to
the community. We are still discussing the
digital book licenses, leasing agreements
(patrons), replacement prices, and other
minor things, BUT we are interested in how
many community members would want to
be a part of such a group. Please, come by
the library, send us an email, or give us a
phone call and let us know if you would be
interested in being a part of a book club.
Also, let us know what titles or formats of
books you would like to read in the book
club.
During the last week of September, the
Isleta Behavioral Health will be conducting
its third round of the Photo Voice Program
and they will be using the library’s
computer lab on Tuesday evenings for six
weeks. So, please plan your internet usage
accordingly as the Photo Voice students
will have first priority of the three Macs
and three Computers with the Photoshop
software. For more information pertaining
to the Photo Voice Program, please contact
Jennifer Padilla or Juan Rey Abeita of the
Isleta Behavioral Health Department at
505.869.5487.
The next After School Homework Incentive
Program will take place after we get
established in the new library. So, give us
a month after we open our doors in the new
complex. At the moment, we have not put
any thought into what we will do or offer
first. Until then, please check the library’s
Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/
IsletaPuebloLibrary for the most recent and
current news as it is updated on a weekly
basis, if not daily.
RECAP
On Friday, August 26 the library hosted
the “Drop The Beat!!!” student concert
in the courtyard of the current library/
educational complex. The concert gave the
four Isleta students in the Hip Hop Music
Class an opportunity to showcase their new
found musical talents to an audience of fifty
to sixty people. The student performers
were C-Krit, Amuze, Code-E, and Make-Up
Girl collectively known as the music group
MCCR. MCCR performed their three songs
titled, “Get Up”, “Robots”, and “Why?” to
a supportive crowd which cheered them
on to the point where the performers
became nervous, but quickly regained their
composure and handled their business by
rocking the mics. They even took time after
their performance to hand out buttons/
pins of their group photo, CDs, pose for
pictures, and took the time to sign CDs for
their fans. Thank you, MCCR for being the
first participants of the library’s Hip Hop
Music Program and, with all honesty, you
rocked the show and deserved all the cheers
on that evening. We hope you enjoyed it as
much as we did.
Guest performers/opening acts for the
students were the student’s instructors
and mentors who helped them during the
six week program. They were: Savannah
of Isleta, Davin “Legun” Coriz of Santo
Domingo, Jimmy James & Nate Raves of
Los Lunas’s FameKrew, Carl “Watermelon
7” Anderson of Isleta, and Ian “DJ TyKne”
Talahaftewa of Isleta. Without the help
and proper guidance of these mentors
the students would not have the talent or
confidence to do what they did on August
26. The library and the students are
VERY GRATEFUL to Ian “DJ TyKne”
Talahaftewa for his time and willingness
to create the six curriculum and for finding
mentors with the patience and skills to
work with the students. If you know any
of the instructors mentioned, please Thank
them for sharing their musical talents with
our youth of Isleta.

pose for a quick pic.
The concert was also catered by the ladies
of the company of “Frosted Fusion”. They
served beef sliders, chicken chimichangas,
pork wonton tacos, cupcakes, virgin
mojito, and ice tea to the grateful crowd.
As a surprise the ladies made chocolate
gold dusted BOOM Boxes for the student
performers, which they loved and claimed
NEVER to eat.
Thank you, Frosted
Fusion for great food and a surprise for the
students.
September 2011
Just to give you all an idea of how big this
program/event was, let me give you a quick
rundown of what kind of publicity the
program generated in the library profession.
The New Mexico Library Association
(NMLA) has requested the Isleta Library
and students (if permitted) would conduct
a session/panel during their October MiniConference at the State Library in Santa
Fe, New Mexico. The Native American
Library Special Interest Group (NALSIG)
has donated their session spot to our library,
if we should agree to do so. Then on the
morning of the event, we received an email
or a proposal to host a similar session/panel
at the 2012 Joint Conference of Librarians of
Isleta’s Watermelon 7 performs “Get It On
The Rez” with oldest Son.

Colors in Kansas City, Missouri. When we
decided to go through with this program
in March, we did not have the intention
to exploit the students, the library, or the
pueblo. We just wanted to introduce the
endless possibilities of the new Macs and
its programs which the library purchased
for the community members to utilize.
The Hip Hop Music Program would not
have been as successful as it was if it had
not been for the following people and the
Departments. They are and in no particular
order: Ian “DJ TyKne” Talahaftewa, the
instructors (LeJohn Marquez, Davin
“Legun” Coriz, Jimmy James & Nate Raves

the Recreation Center; the Department of
Education for lending us their tents, chairs,

Procurement Office for setting up accounts
and completing unexpected paperwork
at moment’s notice; Tribal Council for
approving the library’s 2011 Budget;
Administration for approving our contracts;
and lastly, the parents of the students who
allowed their children to be a part of our
program. Thank you,

Greetings Everyone,
As the 2011-2012 begins, I
wanted to take a moment to
introduce myself to you all. My
name is JoAnn Myers and I
am the new principal at Isleta
Elementary. To provide you some
basic background information,
I am entering my 19th year in
education and I have experience
as a classroom teacher, a school
psychologist, and a building
and district level administrator. My most recent experience in
education was in the Bronx, NY where I founded a middle/high
school charter school and I served as the Principal/Executive
Director for the last three years. My family and I have recently
relocated back to New Mexico and I am excited about the
opportunity to work with the Isleta Elementary students, staff,
parents, and community members.
We have four primary goals this year and they are:
1. to increase student achievement in reading,
mathematics, and science as measured by the New
Mexico Standards Based Assessments (NMSBAs) to
75% school wide proficiency by the end of the 2011-2012
school year;
2. to increase student proficiency on the selected priority
standards for Isleta Elementary to 85% proficiency by
the end of the 2011-2012 school year;
3. to increase our student daily attendance rate to 95%
for the 2011-2012 school year; and
4. to increase Isleta's student enrollment to 225 students
by the end of the 2011-2012 school year.
Our goals are ambitious but attainable and for those of you who
have children attending Isleta, we are confident that you will
see the positive impact of the attainment of these goals through
your child's academic progress. Members of the community with
elementary age students who do not have children attending
Isleta, we are hopeful that you will see our strong focus on
academics and consider our school as your school of choice for
your children.
Again, I look forward to working with the students, staff,
parents, and community members of Isleta. If you have any
questions, comments, concerns, or suggestions, please do not
hesitate to contact me at 869-2321 or at joann.myers@bie.edu.
Here's to an academically prosperous
2011-2012 school year!

WIC NOTES
Why Babies Come Early
A baby may arrive ahead of schedule for many reasons, the most
common of which is preterm labor. Preterm labor can result from
infection, bleeding from the placenta, or water (amniotic fluid)
that breaks too soon.
boosters found in breast milk help all babies fight off infection.
Babies who receive breast milk are six to ten times less likely to
develop necrotizing entercolitis-this is a condition primarily seen
in premature babies where a portion of the bowel tissues dies.
Premature refers to the birth of a baby less than 37 weeks
gestation. Premature babies are not just smaller versions of fullterm babies. Premature babies have medical problems. Because
they are born too early, preemies weigh much less than full-term
babies. They may have health problems because their organs did
not have enough time to develop. Preemies need special medical
care in a neonatal intensive care unit.
Know the Signs of Preterm Labor
Many of the signals of premature labor are similar to symptoms
that can be present in healthy pregnancies. So it is important to
pay close attention to your body and do not hesitate to call your
OB if you suspect there may be a problem.
Despite all the advances in medicine, we cannot duplicate mother's
womb, which is the best environment for your developing baby.
Therefore, it's important to do everything you can to ensure a full
term pregnancy. The most important thing is to get good prenatal
care. The earlier the better. And never skip appointments. Skipping
prenatal checkups can result in problems going undetected.
• Contractions that occur every ten minutes or less
• Change in vaginal discharge
• Pelvic pressure, or the feeling that your baby is pushing
down
• Aching or dull lower-back pain
• Cramps that feel like your period or any abdominal cramps
with or without diarrhea.
Breastfeeding is the natural way to feed all babies and this holds
true for premature babies as well. Antibodies and immunity
WIC Breastfeeding Corner
Women, Infants, and Children
Program
Hospital practices that support breastfeeding can
make a difference in helping to prevent obesity and
overweight in children. Currently in the U.S., 1 in 5
preschool children is overweight. Studies have shown
that with every month that a child is breastfed, their
risk of becoming overweight goes down.
Babies who are not breastfed are at a 32% higher risk
of developing childhood obesity.
About 70% of babies born to mothers in New Mexico
start out breastfeeding in the hospital, but by the end of
the first week of life, many infants have already received
formula. Many times, mothers are given formula in 'gift
bags' from the hospital. The 'gift bags' are actually a
cheap way that infant formula companies advertise
their expensive brands of formula. Using formula in
the early weeks of breastfeeding can really decrease
a mother's breast milk production. Hospital practices,
such as giving out advertising bags, make it harder for
mothers to breastfeed successfully. Without the support
from the hospital, 1 in 3 mothers will stop breastfeeding
early. In addition to not giving out formula advertising
bags, hospitals can also allow 'rooming-in' during the
entire hospital stay, instead of separating mother
and baby. Hospitals can allow mothers to keep their
newborn skin to skin after birth and postpone getting a
weight and giving the newborn a bath. In Albuquerque,
Presbyterian Hospital and University of NM Hospital
are no longer giving formula advertising bags.
Mothers who do not breastfeed have a higher risk of
breast cancer and ovarian cancers. Infants who are not
breastfed, have higher rates of eczema, diarrhea
and vomiting, type 2 diabetes, childhood obesity,
and childhood cancers, as well as many other health
conditions.

Welcome back all students to the 2011/2012 school year. We hope
you all had a enjoyable summer vacation and are ready to start
the year. Many educational activities are scheduled as we do
have staff members ready to work with you. This year we have a
lot of new staff members on board with a lot of new ideas. Many
activities are planned for the beginning of the new year, as you
will have six classes per day along with intervention and study
hall scheduled. Any students that falls behind or has low grades
will have the opportunity to get assistance from your teachers to
help bring your low grades up to par.
The Program of Study is designed to guide high school students
and parents in the Los Lunas Schools District in their selection
of appropriate course work during high school. Students have the
opportunity to choose from a wide selection of course offerings
which are: freshman academy, small learning communities with
career pathways, course prerequisites, grade level in which the
course is offered, school where the course is offered and special
fees. Parents/guardians are encouraged to be a major part of the
course selection and registration process. The school can help
and guide, but it is parents and guardian who will truly make a
positive difference in their student's education.

Valencia High School
It is exciting to be a senior in high school and be making plans for
graduation. We also encourage our seniors to start planning for what
will come after high school. This is a huge transition in the life of
every person. Leaving the pre-K through grade 12 system and going
on to college, vocational school, business college, technical college,
on the job training, the military or other is a huge transition. Please
take some time to do some planning and to talk to folks who have
already gone through it. Ask them if they had it to do over, what would
they do this time? It is good to seek out people who have gone down
the path that you are thinking of taking and talk to them, as well as to
look up topics on the internet related to your chosen field or what you
are considering. Talk with your teachers and clergy about it as well.
We urge all seniors to take the ACT or the SAT if they are considering
a 4 year college. Information about these college placement exams,
financial aid and all the career paths mentioned above is available on
our school website.
Go to the Los Lunas Public Schools website and then to the Valencia
High School webpage and then click on the Counselor section on the
left. More later.

Isleta Pueblo News
September 2011
Parks & Recreation
The month of August was an extremely sad one for the Pueblo of Isleta Parks & Recreation
Department with the passing of Bernie Jojola. Bernie was a long time employee of the Parks &
Recreation Department as a Coach of Basketball and of Little League Baseball. He was one of
the founding members involved in the formation of the Cross Roads Fun Runs held throughout
many of the Reservations in our neighborhood region. He was a long time advocate of teaching
the proper fundamentals of basketball and baseball and allowing the children then to realize
their potential by letting them grow into the athletes that many of his students became to being.
I personally had the opportunity to spend some time with him prior to his death where we
spoke of the many things that he loved and enjoyed and would miss. The top of his list was
his family and the love, emotions (loss of his two sons) and devotions they shared with him as
they grew into the family they are today. We talked extensively about his playing baseball as a
young man, his service in Vietnam and his walk from Isleta to the Santuario of Chimayo upon
his return from Vietnam. He also talked extensively about him and his brothers and friends
life in San Francisco, California as they went to school, work and
partied in the Bay City. And last but not least, his coaching days (at
the Rec. Center) as he worked with the many children (elementary)
who grew up to be outstanding athletes in mid-school, high school
and several who became outstanding college athletes, and last year's
disappointing lost basketball season where our elementary school
children didn't play competitive basketball. Although he knew all
students didn't necessarily become athletes, he truly championed
the idea that they should learn the fundamentals where the children
wouldn't be afraid of playing because of their skills or lack of them.
His love for coaching and mentoring the young children was an asset
that he loved and truly possessed, and as your Director of the Isleta
Parks and Recreation Department we lost an outstanding employee,
a co-worker and a true friend and that will be sorely missed. God
Bless You, Coach Bernie Jojola and your family, until we meet again.
Pictured is Coach Bernie Jojola with the children he coached 20062007 Basketball Season, and the second picture was while he was
involved with the Cross-Roads Fun Walk/Run Program.
End of Summer Fun Day/ Barbecue
Because of prints deadlines I was unable get
pictures in about our end of summer Fun Day/
Barbecue. As I promised last month, pictured
below is a collage of pictures reflecting that
last day of our summer activity program
which the children, parents and employees
who joined in had the opportunity to really
enjoy. Activities included: Face- painting, fun
jumpers, Roulette, Dunk tank, slip-n-slide,
balloon toss, arts/crafts display, snow cones,
cotton candy and a barbecue of hamburgers,
baked beans, chips and watermelon.

Johnson - O'Malley Program
Back to School
No More Sleeping In!
Everyone has officially started the 2011/2012
school year! Early morning buses are a
common sight around the pueblo, as well as
students walking home in the afternoons.
We hope that students and parents alike are
making a smooth transition into the school
year and, as always, please let us know
if we can do anything to help and we will
try our best. The remainder of the month,
as well as September, is filled with Open
Houses! Most run from 6:00pm to 7:30pm
with a couple of exceptions. The J.O.M Staff
will be attending these open houses so keep
your eyes open! Attending the open houses
will give us an opportunity to reach families
who missed or did not know about School
Supply Distribution. Please use these
opportunities to speak with us if you need
to.
J.O.M Report
School Supply Distribution
Information
School Supply Distribution started to
taper off by Friday, August 19. During the
School Distribution, a total of 438 students
received supplies from the J.O.M Program.
Approximately 361 of those students are
from the Los Lunas School District. This is
amazing since it means 61.8% of LL Schools
Native Students were served by the J.O.M
Program! So far, we have given out 12 TI83 calculators and will be ordering more. If
your student still needs a calculator, please
bring in your forms so we have a better idea
of how many to order.
Release of Information waivers were also
counted and over 90% of parents at some
schools gave the J.O.M Program the okay
to access student information, if needed.
Remember, we will never pull grades or any
other student information without letting
you know FIRST. We have not yet finished
counting all the waivers, but should have
the rest of the information at the Parent
Meeting on Wednesday, as well as the
Needs Assessment results.
I have tested out the email list and out of 140
emails I only had 5 returned undeliverable.
This is a huge improvement from previous
years. Thank You!
We will continue to do individual meetings
with parents who have not yet been able to
come in while supplies last. Please spread
the word.
Tutoring
Starting Off the Year
In the flyer I sent out recently, I accidentally
stated that tutoring would be starting on
Sept. 5th. This is incorrect! It completely
slipped my mind that this was Labor Day
and our offices will be closed. SO! Tutoring
will start on Sept. 6th instead. I apologize
for any confusion this may have caused.
I am currently signing up students for
tutoring, however, as you can see by the
calendar, September is a busy month for us
and we will get off to a slow start. This is
not terribly detrimental though. It will give
students a chance to get used to me before
we get into the nitty gritty stuff. The days
and times for tutoring are:
Mon/Wed OR Tues/Thurs at 3:30,
4:30, 5:30, and 6:30. I will also have a
homework help/open classroom day on
Saturdays from 9:00am to 4:30pm.
Students can feel free to come and do
homework or use the computers. If you have
any questions regarding tutoring please feel
free to call me, Bernadette, at 924-3189.
August Parent Meeting Info
What's Crackin'?
On August 24, 2011 we held our very first
parent meeting and student activity night.
First off, we would like to say, "Thank You"
to all the parents and students who made an
effort to attend our very first event. We also
appreciated parents contacting us to let us
know that they would not be able to attend
our meetings due to scheduling conflicts.
We hope to see you at the next one!
During the J.O.M Parent Meeting, The
I.E.C made an amendment to the bylaws by adding an additional two I.E.C
members. There are now 7 I.E.C members
for the Pueblo of Isleta J.O.M program. Two
parents, who were present at the meeting,
were nominated and voted in. That now
brings our I.E.C member total to 6! The last
spot is still vacant but can be filled at the next
J.O.M Parent Meeting. If you are interested
in representing parents and students by
becoming an I.E.C member, please come
to the next meeting. If you are interested
in finding out what it means to be an I.E.C
member or what duties/responsibilities
come with the job, please feel free to give us
a call and we will be happy to explain it.
The I.E.C also held its in-house election.
Jeanette Abeita is president, Joyce Jojola,
is Vice President, Odessa is the secretary,
Karen Olguin and Karen Roybal are
members, and there is 1 vacant position
available. Joyce Jojola and Karen Olguin
are our newest members. Welcome! We
look forward to working with you as well as
the other I.E.C members to help our Native
students.
The National Johnson-O'Malley Conference
is just around the corner. This year the
N.J.O.M Conference is being held in Tulsa,
Oklahoma and we will be taking students.
The I.E.C unveiled the criteria that must
be met by students who are interested in
going.
Students must:
• Be J.O.M Eligible
• Enrolled in High School
• Have a GPA of 2.0
• Have good attendance and behavior
• No suspensions
• Submit an Essay no later than
September 9th.
The J.O.M Program will be taking 13
students. The 5 students who were scheduled
to attend last year's N.J.O.M already have
their spots saved (assuming that they still
meet the criteria). Students who would like
to take advantage of this opportunity will
need to write and submit an essay. What
does the essay have to be about, you ask?
Just tell us a little about yourself, why you
are interested in attending this conference,
and how you think that it will benefit or
assist in your education. As mentioned
above, essays must be in no later than
September 9th.
In addition to taking students to the
N.J.O.M Conference, Geraldine and I
have been selected to do a presentation.
We decided to title our presentation
"Empowering Parents and Students by
Building Community, That's the J.O.M
Way". We will give other members of the
J.O.M Community an overview of the types
of services we provide to our students as well
as the importance of parent involvement in
academic success. The N.J.O.M Conference
will be held from October 16th to the 19th.
We are excited to showcase our program to
the rest of the nation's J.O.M Community.
We will be reporting on our presentation as
well as share the information gained from
attending workshops with all of you at the
parent meeting following our return.
Our next activity will be a day trip to
Tinkertown! Tinkertown is a local attraction
located in the Sandia Mountains. This is
an all ages, first come first serve, event
for K to 12th grade. There are 12 spaces
available. Stop by or send us an email to
sign up for the trip. Once we receive the
permission slip your child(ren)'s spot will
be saved. Remember this is all expense paid
trip! We will be leaving the J.O.M Tutoring
Building at 9am and return at around
4:30 pm. Again, thank you very much to
all the students and parents that showed
up to the parent meeting! We appreciate
the increased interest and hope that we
will continue to see you all. Have a great
September and keep an eye out for more
J.O.M Information!

There is still Gold, Silver and Bronze in
California.
Karate One of Isleta team recently competed in the

Pan American Games programs, as well as sports
with regional popularity in each state.
This year the biennial event was held in various
locations within San Diego, California area. The

This year some of Isleta Pueblo's talented
athletes had the honor of representing
New Mexico playing baseball in the

thanks go out to Chical Haystack (Nicky
and Daisy Lucero) for allowing us to use
their business for the car wash and Isleta
Golf Course for their donations for the
raffle. Bert Danielson, Pat Jojola, Deanna
Lucero, Rudy Jojola, Anthony (Narps)
Jiron, Frank (Kuptu ) Jiron, Izzy Lujan,
Leandra Jojola and Mark Dixon also helped
with donations and their time in the food
sales and fund raisers. Please forgive us if
we forgot to mention anyone else that made
contributions to helping this experience a
success for these talented athletes. The
fund raising helped make it possible for the
parents to be a part of their experience and
we will never forget it.
Owen Eastman, son of Delores Lujan and
Michael Eastman, Marcello Chavez, son
of Bernard Chavez and Adela Bird, Iziah
Waseta, son of Rachel Jojola and Paul
Waseta.
Iziah plays pitcher and left field.
Marcello Chavez, Owen Eastman and lziah
Waseta played in the 14U division bringing
home the Silver Medal with the team work
of other talented athletes from NM tribes
and the excellent coaching from Vance and
Lance Aspaas, residents of Farmington.
Eugene Chavez and Ryan Lujan represented
NM in the 19U division bringing home the
Silver Medal also with team work and
talented coaches John Romero and Mike
Manuelito, residents of Jemez Pueblo.
These athletes played their best and the
competition did also, but they held their
heads high, win or lose, as all great athletes
should. Benny Shendo, Chairperson for
New Mexico, was presented with the Spirit
Award for good sportsmanship, which is
another great honor NM brought home.
This opportunity was a great experience
for all the athletes who attended. The
boys made new friends and experienced
independence they will never forget. They
were housed at Marquette University
dormitories where they ate meals as a team
creating a bond every good team needs, and
attended athlete events where they were
able to meet and create friendships with
other Native athletes from throughout
the United States. The athletes were not
allowed to leave the team for any reason
which they did not mind at all, only allowing
the parents time with them during game
times.
This experience would not have been possible
without the dedication and hard work from
these athletes and also the support from
the parents, family, community members
and local businesses. We are very grateful
for Governor Lujan for having the Hard
Rock Casino and Hotel and Isleta Higher
Education Department sponsor these
athletes. We would also like to thank the
community for supporting our bake sales,
car washes, food sales and raffles. Special
Marcello plays catcher and 2nd base.
The next Indigenous Games will be held in
2013 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and the 14U
boys are already talking about attending
the tryouts and making team NM in the
16U division. These opportunities keep
young athletes interested in sports and
out of trouble. These athletes will continue
Baseball locally and have been asked to play
with other teams having more opportunities
to travel because of their talent. They
have already made commitments at young
ages to attending long practices and to
be the best athlete they can be and we as
parents commit to supporting them in any
way. Again we thank everyone for all the
continued support.
Owen plays pitcher, 3rd base, short stop
and outfield.
