Governor’s Report
Maguwam,
We hope this newsletter finds our community is in
good health and spirits. Fall is quickly approaching
and it’s starting to become chilly late at night and
in the early mornings. I would like to remind all
ATV/UTV users to follow safety protocol while in
use. I recommend utilizing a helmet for your safety
and the safety of others.
Again, we would like to recognize and thank our
Mayordomos for another successful feast day. We
celebrated with a mass, traditional dances, and a
live band. I would like to extend my gratitude to
our staff, departments and most importantly our
families and friends who prepared for the feast
days. I would like to also give a special thank you
to the Brandon Saiz band for the live music and a
night of dancing. It is always a pleasure to work
with you Mr. Saiz.
Mayordomos
September 3rd – Harold Jiron Jr.
September 4th – Anthony “Narps” Jiron
On September 12th and 17th, we visited Los Lunas
Public Schools to address our Native American
students. We shared some words of wisdom with our
students and answered their questions. We are very
proud of our students and how far they have come
and we ask for you to continue to provide words of
encouragement to them.
On September 30th, I will be attending the 2025
Coalition of Rio Grande Water Users 3rd Annual
Conference. I am scheduled to speak on behalf of the
Six Middle Rio Grande Pueblo Coalition on October
1st at 8:30 in Santa Fe.
Department of Culture & Historic

and Laurel Goodluck, and to our staff who supported this event.
I also want to thank all the community supporters who were part
of the planning and design of this exhibit, including the New
Mexico History Museum. As well as the Cultural Committee who
helped to bring this exhibit to the Pueblo. Your presence and
support help us to continue preserving our history.
See you at the next event!
Congratulations to the Isleta Grill, who participated
in the New Mexico State Fair Green Chile
Cheeseburger challenge. Isleta Grill was crowned
once again as 2025 champions for the People’s
Choice & Blind Competition. I am so happy for all
their accomplishments!
Last, I want to send my condolences to the families
of those who have lost their family members during
the month of September.

See Something,Say Something:
Breaking the Silence
The Pueblo of Isleta is a community rooted in
tradition, strength, and care for one another. But even
the strongest can struggle in silence. Depression,
isolation, and thoughts of self-harm don’t always show
up loudly — sometimes they come quietly, in the form
of withdrawal, sadness, or changes in behavior.
We all have a role to play.
If you notice someone pulling away, seeming
hopeless, or just not acting like themselves — don’t
stay silent. A simple check-in or a call to someone
who can help might be what saves a life.
Your voice can be a lifeline.
Let’s break the silence around mental health. Let’s
look out for our youth, our elders, our friends — and
speak up when something feels off.
See the signs. Start the save.
You are never alone, and neither is anyone else —
not in this community.

PUEBLO OF ISLETA
PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
SEPTIC SYSTEM DO’S AND DON’TS
In order for the Pueblo to pump out the septic tank, we first have to
locate your residence. Please have house numbers posted on your
residence. If your address includes an alphabetic letter, include this
on your home as well. If we can’t locate your home, we won’t be able to
pump the septic tank. When you call the Public Works office (505-8695170) to request a work order for a septic pumping, be sure to include a
good contact number so the driver can contact you, if needed.
Clear access to the septic system must be maintained by the homeowner.
Please move any vehicles, wood piles, or any other obstacles far enough
away from the septic system so the septic truck can get close to the tank.
Weeds need to be kept under control. Please do NOT burn the weeds,
especially on the leach line portion of your septic system. Burning the
weeds will damage the piping under the ground, rendering the leach
field inoperative as the pipes will melt.
If there is not sufficient access, a door hanger will be left advising the
tank could not be emptied and why. When access is available, the
homeowner should call the Public Works office at 505-869-5170 to
request a work order to have the septic tank pumped out. Public Works
regular business hours are from 7:00am till 3:30pm. While Public Works,
if available, can be a source to help with septic pumping, the homeowner
may also hire a private company to accomplish the work as well. Last, if
a private company is hired there will be no reimbursement.
Remember: Don’t put anything down the drains/toilets that can cause
damage to the septic system. Grease, flushable wipes, paper towels,
sanitary products, trash and excessive toilet tissue which can cause
sewage back-ups. Grease is the #1 cause of sewage back-ups. Tree/
shrub roots are a close second. Plant trees and shrubs as far away as
possible from your septic tank, sewer clean-outs and leach fields. Roots
will search out sources of water (including wastewater) and once the
roots get inside the pipe, the roots will grow in size, eventually creating
a blockage in the piping.
If you have a slow draining sink or bathtub and have poured a harsh
chemical down the drain, please advise Public Works/Housing employees
that may later respond to help clear the back-up. Many products sold
to clear drain blockages have acid in them and are a hazard to you and
the employees that may be trying to clear the blockage.
If you have any questions, please call the Public Works office at 505869-5170.

PUBLIC NOTICE
Opportunity for Public Comment
The Pueblo of Isleta is requesting public comment
for Clean Water Act 401 tribal water quality
certification of the Isleta Diversion Dam Peralta
Sluiceway and East Bank Realignment project.
The Pueblo of Isleta is given an opportunity to identify
any comments, concerns, and suggestions our
community may have regarding the U.S. Bureau of
Reclamation project known as the Isleta Diversion Dam
(“IDD”) Peralta Sluiceway and East Bank Realignment
Project.
The purpose of the project is to improve sediment
management by realigning the east bank of the Rio
Grande upstream of the IDD, to mechanize and
automate three radial dam gates at the IDD and three
headwork gates one sluiceway exit gate at the Peralta
Main Canal. The laydown area for the project is 3.05
acres, both upstream and downstream of the IDD.
The work area will be isolated using a cofferdam to
minimize impacts to aquatic species and habitat. The
project is expected to occur during the non-irrigation
season from November 2025 through February 2026.
The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation issued a Finding of
No Significant Impact for the project (May 24, 2024).
Supplemental environmental information dated July
2025 to support the project is available.
When coverage is sought under a Nationwide Permit
for discharge into surface waters, the Pueblo of Isleta
has an opportunity to assure that the discharge will
not negatively affect the Pueblo’s waterbodies. This
is documented through the 401 certification and
is required in accordance with the Pueblo of Isleta
Surface Water Quality Standards. The Pueblo of
Isleta can submit comments to the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers for consideration in granting permit
coverage. The Pueblo of Isleta also has the authority
to deny certification if the permitting circumstances will
not guarantee that the discharge will meet Pueblo of
Isleta surface water quality standards.
The Nationwide Permits (NWPs) issued in December
2021 are available electronically at:
h t t p s : / / w w w. m v n . u s a c e . a r m y. m i l / M i s s i o n s /
Regulatory/Permits/Nationwide-Permits-Program/
Permit coverage for the project is requested under
Nationwide Permit Numbers 3 “Maintenance,” 13
“Bank Stabilization,” and 16 “Return Water From
Upland Contained Disposal Areas.”
Comments concerning the Pueblo of Isleta’s Clean
Water Act Section 401 certification may be sent to:
Ramona M. Montoya, Water Quality Control Officer
Pueblo of Isleta Environment Department
PO Box 1270

Environment Department will review all comments
received, draft a recommendation on the Pueblo of
Isleta’s 401 certification action for consideration and
review by POI Legal Department. The final approved
certification (with or without conditions), denial, or
waiver shall be signed by Governor Jiron and will be
submitted to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

upcoming new year. Your participation and enthusiasm made the
event a success, and we look forward to continuing to support your
growth and success in the months ahead.

CONGRATULATIONS
“Isleta Grill”
Here’s to hard work and dedication. Last year they were
the winners of the New Mexico State Fair Green Chile
Cheeseburger Challenge.
This year they outdid themselves by not only winning “People’s
Choice” but bringing home this year’s trophy for the “Blind
Judging”.
Kudos to Isabel and Isleta Grill Crew for putting Isleta Pueblo
on the map. Make sure to come out to support this local
eatery, you won’t be disappointed.

ISLETA POLICE DEPARTMENT NEWS
OCTOBER – 2025
We begin the fourth and final
quarter of the year and one has
to wonder where the time went.
October brings about many
activities where there are
gatherings and many events.
Safety and preparedness will make for a
successful and fun time for all participants.
ALBUQUERQUE EVENTS:
The major event of the year for Albuquerque,
is, of course “Balloon Fiesta” which takes
place October 4 through October 12, 2025.
If traveling to the fiesta or just on the main
thoroughfares of the city, please be an alert
and conscientious driver. This event brings
in thousands of visitors, some who may have
been to the city before for this event, and
first time newcomers. Be aware of “chase
crews” maneuvering through the roadways
to stay within close proximity of the balloon/
pilot they are “chasing”. Be alert, stay
calm and just resign yourselves to traffic
slow downs, perhaps some fender benders,
tempers igniting, etc. Driving challenges
will be evident and if any of you plan on
attending or driving in that area, please
be cautious, alert, patient and prepared to
take measures to avert mishaps.
all, though temperatures may be cooling
off slightly, the interior temperatures in
a vehicle can rise quickly and become too
hot for a person or pet to be left in the
vehicle, so do not be fooled if it is a balmy 80
degrees outside. Always check your vehicle
before leaving each and every time. There
have been too many incidents resulting in
serious injury or death to a child and pets
left in vehicles.
Drinking and driving is still problematic
as many feel they are okay to drive, but
remember “Driving Buzzed is Driving
Drunk”. Anything that impairs a person’s
ability to safely operate a motor vehicle
will have consequences, so make the right
choice and get a designated driver. The
Traffic Unit will be conducting random
checkpoints through the end of 2025, don’t
become a DWI statistic.
TIPS & REMINDERS:
Goblins and ghosts will soon be out
canvassing neighborhoods for “treats” and
we ask all drivers to be patient, courteous
and alert. Consider walking with your
little “trick or treaters” rather than
driving – devise a plan to travel in groups
with meeting points along the way. The
youngsters will be excited and normally
not paying attention to traffic so drivers
“keep your entire time and attention to
your driving and do not allow distractions
(answering telephones/texting etc.) distract
you. Let’s all strive to keep everyone during
this season safe and out of harm’s way.
Please dispose of any carseat which may
have been in a vehicle involved in a crash,
avoid purchasing a carseat at a garage
sale and check the expiration date (yes,
carseats do expire) for the seat. Knowing
the history of the seat is imperative to
ensuring it is not defective and in good
order.
If you encounter a reckless or suspicious
driver, please contact the Police Department
and report it. Impaired driving, road rage,
medical emergencies can attribute to the
nature of the person driving and we are
here to ensure the roadways are safe for all
to travel.
As usual, this unit will be out for traffic
violations to include speeding, seatbelt,
DWI and any other traffic violations that
can contribute to unsafe travel upon the
roadways of the Pueblo. A reminder to
TRICK OR TREAT!!
CONGRATULATIONS!
The unit is preparing to order new carseats
with the new grant funding and ask all who
believe they may be in need of one to contact
the Police Department. Until new carseats
are obtained, carseat checks will continue
and if anyone has questions or doubts of
the proper installation of a carseat, contact
Gertrude Lujan to make an appointment.
NEIGHBORHOOD EVENTS:
IHSP TRAFFIC UNIT:
The carnival is just around the corner and
IPD will be in attendance so please come by
and see us, play games, win prizes and just
get to know the officers and staff. A fun
time will be had by all!
HALLOWEEN CARNIVAL
