Message from the President

Nowa,

How time flies. It

was one year ago

this month that

the Pawnee Nation

experienced the

5.7 magnitude

earthquake. We

suffered damage

in almost all of

our buildings. It

has been a long

process, but I am pleased to share with

you that we are starting the repairs of our

buildings on the Reserve. There will be some

inconvenience as we move offices around but

the needed repairs will fix our buildings and

help us to provide services.

The Nation has been extremely busy these

past few months. We have been in the midst

of elections and by the time you receive this

we should have our last councilman elected.

Please continue to pray for each of us as we

try to move ahead. The Stonewolf expansion

is almost completed and looks great. We

are hoping for more use in the facility, and

that will help us to do more in our services.

Kuruks LLC, our own building company,

has been involved in the construction of

the facility. The PBC has approved the

Campground Project which will replace the

arbor, update the bathrooms, replace the

electrical and build a walking track. We are

still in discussion over the swimming pool

and need your input on whether to build this

or not.

Our Culture Resource Division has been busy

these past few months. They have been

involved in the Pawnee language class and

continue to meet. We have had a dance in

our homelands, Nebraska, as we had the

eclipse events with many Pawnee’s giving

speeches and leading out. Many journeyed

north for this rare occurrence of the eclipse.

We had tribal members work in Nebraska to

grow our traditional corn and will have that

corn shipped to Pawnee for use. It’s good to

have our ways practiced, and Herb Adson and

the staff continue to lead out in a good way.

Our Homecoming has come and gone but

many memories were shared once again. It’s

always a blessing to see one another and

to witness our people dancing, eating and

having a great time. We even look at the

storms and thank Attius for his goodness to

us. Thank you Pawnee Indian Vets for a great

Homecoming. Thanks also to the Pawnee

Nation staff for all the activities.

We are in the midst of preparation for a

visit from the HHS Secretary, Tom Price. He

is one of the President’s Cabinet members,

and it’s a great honor for him to visit us. I

invited him while in D.C. this past spring and

told him I wanted to be the first one from a

Tribal Nation to ask him. I told him that the

Pawnees were a small Tribe but had always

had a big voice in Tribal matters. We are

also a Direct Service Tribe (get our medical

service directly from the government) and

have a great facility here in Pawnee. He

visits on September 19, and we are looking

for great things from this historic visit.

My hope is always that things are well for

you. We continue to do our best at the

Pawnee Nation to meet the needs of our

people. Stop by or call and share with us

how we are doing. Your voice is important to

us. Our Creator’s richest blessings to you and

all your family. Once again, every good thing

comes from above, and we give thanks for

that to Attius.

Dear Tribal

Community,

It has been an

outstanding

couple of months

here at the

Pawnee Nation,

and I have a lot

to update you

all on since I

last had the

opportunity

to write to you. First off, I would like to

express my unbounding pride in the staff and

employees here at the Pawnee Nation. Every

day I am amazed by their ability to overcome

great challenges and address those challenges

in a respectful and professional manner. To

our employees: Thank you!

Since the last time I had written to you,

the Nation was entering into the part of the

summer that we all love here in Pawnee:

Homecoming. I would like to say that this

year’s event was an outstanding event and

heck even the weather was great: not too

hot not too cold! To the officers, staff, and

volunteers of the Pawnee Indian Veterans, I

want to thank you for, once again, putting on

a most memorable celebration.

event we also we treated to a presentation,

on the Pawnee in Nebraska, given by the

nation’s tribal historic preservation officer,

Matt Reed. Overall, it was a great weekend,

and I am so pleased with our staff’s ability to

be the ambassadors we need.

The staff here at the nation has also been

extremely busy this summer hosting multiple

activities and events. For instance, towards

the end of summer, the staff at DHCS put

on a summer camp for our youth that was

extremely well attended and enjoyed by all.

The staff is also preparing the campus for an

exciting visit by the Secretary of Health and

Human Services, Tom Price, M.D. We look

forward to this opportunity to highlight the

Pawnee Nation’s unique cultural identity.

Another event put on by the staff here at the

nation was the total eclipse celebration in

Dannebrog, Nebraska. The Cultural Resources

Division led the way by singing, dancing, and

celebrating the event at a park in Dannebrog

where the descendants of white oaks planted

by our ancestors still thrive today. At the

some time, but nobody was prepared for the

will cause some of our services to be delayed,

but we will try our hardest to minimize the

impact felt. I thank you all in advance for

truly wish all of you well, and I know that

the nation will continue to thrive with God’s

what the future has in store for the people of

President W. Bruce Pratt spoke to

representatives from the Bureau

of Indian Affairs (BIA) during a

Department of Interior Listening

Session in Tulsa, Oklahoma on June

27, 2017. The BIA has been seeking

input from tribal leaders and other

tribal representatives on the

Bureau’s upcoming reorganization

plan.

dialogue.” It is supposed to be

done in good faith between two

parties and tribes deserves a “seat

at the table” when discussing “our

future” instead of transcribing

statements and taking those

recordings back to Washington,

D.C. President Pratt’s statements

were received with much applause

from the attendees.

President Pratt stated: “I will say

here that the Pawnee Nation does

not agree with these cuts to the BIA

budget. Now, you can reorganize

all you want, but don’t cut…We

are severely underfunded”.

Executive Order 13781 issued on

March 13, 2017, is a comprehensive

plan for reorganizing the executive

branch of the government. The

head of each agency is to submit

to the director of the Office

of Management and Budget

(OMB) a plan to reorganize. The

Department of the Interior’s plan

is due by September 9, 2017; the

plan will be published soon after

that date in the Federal Register

and the public will be invited to

make comments on the plan. After

the comment period, at least 180

days, OMB submits all the plans to

the President.

He added, “We are so underfunded

in everything. We, as tribal leaders

have stated that and restated

that. And the President’s proposed

budgets for 2018… - - they’re going

to have some terrible consequences

to the Tribal Nations”.

Council Special Meeting

President W. Bruce Pratt called the

meeting to order at 5:32 pm and the

invocation was given by Mr. Andrew

Knife Chief. Seven Council members

were present.

approve the Pawnee Business Council

meeting agenda for August 9, 2017,

seconded by Charles Knife Chief.

Division of Education

On May 10th, 2017 the Pawnee Nation Education Division in collaboration with the Pawnee JOM Parent Committee and

Pawnee Title VI Indian Education hosted a Senior Reception to recognize our Native American seniors. During this reception, twelve students were presented graduation stoles with their tribal seals and an eagle feather, three of the

students present where Pawnee enrolled tribal members Aaron Lieb, Cameron Powell, and Alyssa Howell. Jaden Gardipe was unable to attend the event but was presented her graduation stole and feather before graduation. On behalf

of the Education Division, we would like to congratulate our Pawnee seniors as well as all our Native American seniors!

Pawnee Pride

Pawnee Pride Opens New 3 Mile Exercise

Circuit Route on the Reserve

The Pawnee Pride Program recently

opened a new three-mile exercise circuit

route on the Pawnee Nation Reserve in

August 2017. The route takes the user

on a scenic route of the reserve which

begins and ends at the DHCS Building

(old Indian Clinic) located at 400 Agency

Road, Pawnee Oklahoma. At every quarter

of a mile throughout the route, there

are exercise stations that users can stop

and perform to help with strength and

flexibility. The route map will be posted

at the beginning of the course.

This type of circuit is ideal for users of

all endurance levels, allowing flexibility

to start and stop on your own and go

as far as one feels comfortable. The

reserve serves as a safe exercise area for

community members due to excellent

sidewalks, good lighting, and minimal

traffic in the evenings and early mornings.

DHCS staff encourages all community

members and Pawnee Nation staff to

utilize the free exercise opportunities,

such as this course, as frequent as

possible. It is our goal to establish and

promote healthy opportunities for the

Pawnee community. We look forward

to good health today and in our future!

Substance Abuse Program (SAP)

Methamphetamine and Suicide Prevention Initiative (MSPI)

Pawnee Nation SAP/MSPI Programs had

a busy and exciting quarter. We hosted

several events including our annual

Prevention Day Walk and Horseshoe

Tournament during the Pawnee Indian

Veterans Homecoming Powwow.

he Prevention Day Walk kicked off on

Thursday, June 29. There were (415)

participants, both tribal members

and non-tribal members. Participants

walked a marked course from the Roam

Chief Building heading south around

the Pawnee Nation Fitness Center and

back. Every participant received special

Prevention Day apparel, a healthy

snack, and bottled water. Additionally,

drawings were done for youth and adult

participants.

The horseshoe

tournament was

held on Saturday,

July 1, 2017.

We had a great

turn out with

(10) competing

teams. The

final two teams

played an exciting final round! Prizes

and trophies were awarded to the top

(3) teams. While adults

participated in the

horseshoe tournament,

we provided a

waterslide, inflatable

pool, water balloons,

and various yard games

for the youth to enjoy.

August brought on our Summer Camp!

With the combined efforts of the

Divisions of Education and Health &

Community Services, we were able

to host an average of (56) youth,

ages varying from 5-16. The youth

enjoyed several activities throughout

the weeklong camp including soccer

clinics, baseball clinics, team building

activities, S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology,

Engineering and Math) education, and

cultural presentations; not to mention

our fun filled water day on Friday! Each

youth received a customized certificate,

apparel, and

incentive upon

the completion

of the Summer

Camp.

activities. Our goal within SAP/MSPI is to

continue to bring educational events to

our community.

We look forward to advocating for drug

and alcohol free lifestyles, while also

promoting anti-bullying initiatives. Be

Little Dee Drive as we host a Suicide

Awareness walk at 10am. We will also be

hosting two motivational speakers this

coming fall at Pawnee High School. Look

for our announcements for Ben “Chalk

Guy” Glenn on September 27 for a

community event as well. In October, we

will host Fabian Ramirez as a part of our

collaborations with the Pawnee Public

School district for Red Ribbon Week. Our

Red Ribbon walk is scheduled for October

23, with the grade school kids. Come on

out and join us.
