Pawnee Nation Special Election to be

Held on Saturday, January 2, 2016

Due to the resignation of President Misty Nuttle,

the Pawnee Nation will be conducting a Special

Tribal Election on January 2, 2016. The filing

dates for candidates were November 18 - 21,

2015. The members of the Pawnee Nation

Election Commission encourage all members

of the Pawnee Nation to exercise their right to

VOTE and become a part of this very important

opportunity. Your personal involvement in this

process can and will strengthen our Nation, now

and in the future. All members of the Pawnee

Nation of Oklahoma, who are eighteen (18) years

of age or over on the date of the election are

eligible to vote.

Any qualified member of the Pawnee Nation can

request an absentee ballot in writing, addressed to

the Pawnee Nation Election Commission at P.O.

600, Pawnee Oklahoma 74058. Eligible voters

may also FAX a request to the Pawnee Nation

Election Commission at (918) 762-6446, if they

expect to be absent from the polling place on the

day of the election. A request for an absentee

ballot is printed on page two of this publication

and available by contacting the Pawnee Nation

Election Commission Chairman at (918) 3995426.

Please include a clearly printed valid address and

telephone number when requesting an absentee

ballot. All requests must be made no less than

twenty-one (21) days (December 13, 2015);

before the Election day. (January 2, 2016) Upon

receipt of a valid request, the Election Commission

will forward to the voter all necessary forms to

be used in the pending election. (IMPORTANT)

Any ballots received after 12:00 noon on the day

of the election WILL NOT be counted.

On, election day all eligible voters who vote in

person will also need to bring and show a state

identification or CDIB card on the day of the

election.

which means the amount of time to request

Absentee Ballots, return Absentee Ballots has

OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

November 5, 2015

The Pawnee Nation Business Council officially

accepted the resignation of their President,

Misty Nuttle on Wednesday, November 4, 2015.

President Nuttle, in an email to the Council stated,

“…it is with a heavy heart that I decided …to

resign my position as Pawnee Business Council

President. I must take care of my own obligations

and put my family first in their time of need. It

has been a pleasure serving with all of you and

I will always hope for the best for the Pawnee

Nation.” President Nuttle served the Pawnee

Nation in various capacities and most recently as

President, providing excellence in leadership.

In accordance with the Pawnee Nation

Constitution, Vice President W. Bruce Pratt has

assumed all duties as the Interim Pawnee Nation

Business Council President and Councilman

Nowa! Happy Holidays! With Thanksgiving and

Christmas quickly approaching we would like

to take this time to wish you and your family all

the joy and blessings this season brings. Here

at the Pawnee Nation, we are busily working

toward sharing what Atias Tira Wahat has given

us this past year. With a spirit of unity and pride

in our people, we have recently mailed out ham

and/or turkey coupons to our elders, planned

Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations for our

employees and elders and are busy planning other

holiday events.

Native American Heritage is also being

acknowledged here at the Nation. The Pawnee

Business Council (PBC) hosted a prayer breakfast

on November 2nd, Rock the Mocs Day on

November 9th, Fry bread contest November 17th

and a Native Bling contest was held during the

Employee Thanksgiving Dinner on November

20th. On November 25th there will be a Native

American potluck and Princess parade in at the

Roam Chief Event Center; needless to say we are

eating well this month! We want to congratulate

the winners of the Fry bread contest and winners

of the Native Bling Contest.

On November 6th, we hosted Inter-tribal Fun Day

at the Pawnee Nation Campus. Participating tribes

included the Kaw Nation, Iowa Nation, and Otoe

Tribe. Three of our Council members even turned

into Diana Ross and the Supremes performing

“Stop! In the Name of Love” at the Council Lip

Pawnee Nation for placing 1st overall and thank

the hard work of the planning committee for

making it possible for the Pawnee Nation to be so

well represented among other tribes in our region.

The Pawnee Nation Code Talkers were inducted

into the Oklahoma Military Hall of Fame on

November 13th. It was my honor and privilege

to accept the award on behalf of the Pawnee

Nation. Many Pawnee Nation Tribal members

were present and the Pawnee Nation Princess, Sky

Seeing Leading Fox; Charlie McAdams, Raven

Morgan, Sara Llamas-Howell and Lauren Noriega

performed the National Anthem in sign language

during the opening ceremony.

As you may know, PBC accepted the resignation

of Pawnee Business Council President Misty

Nuttle on November 4th. In accordance with our

Constitution, I, Vice President W. Bruce Pratt,

accepted the duties as President and Councilman

Adrian Spottedhorsechief was elected by PBC

to the role of Interim Vice President. A special

Election will be held on January 2, 2016 for the

Office of President of PBC. Filing began on

November 18th and ended on November 21st.

Please be sure and vote in this very important

election.

The Pawnee Nation’s offices will be closed in

observance of Thanksgiving November 26th thru

the 27th. Let us continue to pray for our troop

overseas, our community and our elders. We wish

you and yours a joyful and blessed holiday season.

on Friday November 13, 2015 at the 16th Annual Banquet and

On Friday November 13, 2015, members of the Pawnee Nation and descendants of the Pawnee Nation Code

Talkers were present in Oklahoma City

to particpate in day-long events that began with a Press Conference recognizing the Pawnee Nation Code Talkers.

Additional events included an afternoon

Gourd Dance honoring Former Pawnee

President, Marshall Gover. Later the

same day, beginning at 5:30 p.m., the

Oklahoma Military Hall of Fame Banquet kicked off at the Tower Hotel. The

Pawnee Nation took part in the Opening Ceremony with the National Anthem sung by Mr. Neill Bayhylle and the

Pawnee Nation Princess, Sky Seeing

Leading Fox; Charlie McAdams, Raven

Morgan, Sara Llamas-Howell and Lauren Noriega performing the National Anthem in sign language.

After the dinner was served, the Induction Ceremony began with recognition

of other Military Hall of Hame Inductees.

The recognition of the Pawnee Code

Talkers was near the middle of the Ceremony and Pawnee President W. Bruce

Pratt accepted the Code Talker Plaque

on belhalf of the Pawnee Nation. At the

close of the Banquet, the Pawnee Nation was given the opportunity to honor

the descendants in their own way with

a drum group led by Pat Leading Fox.

The Pawnee Veterans, Descendants of

the Code Talkers and members of the

Pawnee Business Council paraded into

the Banquet Room. Each of the Descendants was given a plaque and pictures

were taken. After the Pawnee portion of

the event, many families posed for family pictures. Overall it was a very well

attended event and everyone seemed

to enjoy the time spent with family and

friends.

CHR/Health

Education

Program

Update:

The CHR/Health Education Program

hosted several events over the last quarter in

collaboration with other Division of Health

and Community Service Programs. These

wellness events provide fun and healthy

activities for the community. We strive

to incorporate some type of event once or

more per quarter and without the help from

fellow DHCS programs, the community,

and most importantly, the participants,

these events would not be successful.

October served as a very busy month

with several action packed community

events including a Fall Festival, Zombie

5k, and Passionate for Pink Breast Cancer

Awareness Event.

The program also

supported three runners from the Pawnee

Nation Wellness Program in the 2015 Tulsa

Run 15k. Congratulations to Jasha Lyons

Echo-Hawk, Mee-Kai Clark, and Tammy

Hixon, Wellness Program members, for

completing the Tulsa Run 15K (9.3 miles)

on Saturday October 31, 2015.

News from SAP:

The Pawnee Nation Substance Abuse Program (SAP) collaborated with

Pawnee Grade School, Pawnee Nation Law Enforcement, Pawnee Police

Department, and Pawnee County Sheriff’s Office to hold the annual Red

Ribbon Walk. The Pawnee Grade School teachers along with SAP staff and

a few tribal employees walked from the grade school through downtown

Pawnee, carrying banners, and chanting “Don’t Do Drugs”. The SAP

Program provided bags, pencils, cups, and ribbons with alcohol and drug free

messages on them to all the students in the Pawnee Public School system.

This is just one of the activities that the Substance Abuse Program sponsors

for the Pawnee Public School students.

This is only the lead in to trying times for the people that have to contend with

substance abuse issues. For the most part, society views the holiday season as

a joyful or happy time, but for many, this can be a pivotal time in maintaining

a person’s sobriety. The four biggest emotional causes for relapse are faced

during this time frame, which are anger, anxiety, depression, and fear. The

actions can scale from worring about time to finding a way to providing gifts.

Just remember that the best gift of all is to be able to give one self to family/

companion in a healthy way. So just remember to take care of ourselves first

so we can then give others what they need.

Counselor, (918) 399-5324. SAP office hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday,

and Friday from 8am-5pm and Wednesday from 9am-5pm. Support group is

every Wednesday evening from 7-8 p.m. The Substance Abuse Program staff

are on call daily after 5pm.

Pawnee Nation Food Distribution

Program

The Food Distribution Program began

giving out the frozen pork chops in

September. The frozen pork chops were

initially distributed as 1 lb. package per

participant, but now there is no limit on the

amount a household can take as long as it

is within the maximum quantity of meat

per household. The frozen pork chops are

boneless and come four in a package.

The two new fresh produce items,

clementines and fresh cranberries, are

now available for the holiday season. The

clementines come in 3 lb. bags and the

fresh cranberries come in 1 lb. bags. The

program began giving out 3 lb. frozen,

fully cooked boneless hams on November

1. The hams are limited and will be given

out until all are gone.

In the coming months, we will be adding

our regional traditional foods to our food

package. Those foods are blue cornmeal

and frozen bison. The blue cornmeal will be

in its own food group and will not be a part

of the flour/cornmeal group. It will come

in 2 lb. units. The bison will also be in its

own food group and will not be a part of the

standard meat group. The packaging size of

the bison will be either 1 lb. or 2.5 lb. units.

On October 1, the program received the FY

2016 net monthly income standards. If you

would like to see if you are eligible for the

Food Distribution Program or would like

more information, you can come by our

office or call (918) 762-2541. The program

is located on the south side of the Roam

Chief Building.

Pawnee Pride

Pawnee Pride hosted their first glow in

the dark “Nightmare Doubles” disc golf

tournament for Halloween. Twelve teams

entered the tournament for a night filled

with fun; the next tournament is in the

works. Pawnee Pride is also discussing

possibilities of expanding the current nine

hole course into a eighteen hole course. For

Greetings!

My name is Melisa Harris, and I would

like to take the opportunity to introduce

myself and thank the Pawnee Nation for

the opportunity to coordinate the Indian

Child Welfare program. On November 5,

I stepped into this wonderful position. I

am excited not only to serve the children

and families of the Pawnee Nation, but

also look forward to learning more

about the Pawnee traditions, history, and

culture. I am a member of the Chickasaw

Nation and enjoy learning about my own

heritage as well as others. I am passionate

about serving people and especially

children. I have been in the field of

social services for the last 15 years. I

have worked for the State of Oklahoma,

State of Missouri, Chickasaw Nation, as

well as other agencies whose primary

goal is the protection of children. I love

what I do and look forward to this new

adventure in my life.

As your new ICW Coordinator, I am

grateful and committed to serving you.

She was preceded in death by her

grandparents, Vance and Faye

(Duncan) Horsechief and Johnnie

and Vanila (Morphis) Phipps; and

one aunt, Nila Phipps.

Jesica Lee Phipps, Tahlequah resident, passed away Saturday, Aug.

29, 2015, in Tulsa. She was 41

years of age.

Funeral services for Jesica were

held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept.

2, at the Church of Jesus Christ

of Latter-day Saints with Bishop

Spencer Johnson officiating. Interment followed in the Tahlequah

City Cemetery under the direction

of Hart Funeral Home.

Viewing was held on Tuesday, Sept.

1, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and at the

church from 8:30 a.m. until time of

service. The casket was closed following the service.

Pallbearers were Dale Hutchins,

Seth Huntley, Phillip North, Jonathan Phipps, Sequoyah Pritchett

and Gary Phipps. Honorary Pallbearers will be Henry Farmer, Ron

Bywater, Don Price, David Geasland, Freddie Shade and Reasor’s

Grocery.

Jesica was born Aug. 1, 1974,

in Tahlequah to Gary and Gene

(Horsechief) Phipps. She grew up

in Tahlequah and graduated from

Tahlequah High School.

She went on to attend Northeastern

State University graduating with a

degree in speech pathology. Jesica loved attending Native American powwows, doing genealogy,

fishing and reading. She loved to

travel. Her greatest joy was attending church. She was proud of her

Cherokee and Pawnee heritage.

She had a kind, loving and giving

spirit who enjoyed helping others.

Jesica loved spending time with

her nephew, Tristyn.

Survivors include her parents, Gary

and Gene Phipps of Tahlequah;

one brother, Jonathan Levi Phipps

and his wife, Karma, of Westville; sister, Valerie Hubler Walters; one nephew, Tristan Phipps;

four aunts, Lucinda Horsechief of

Tahlequah, Neva Moore of Pawnee, Susan Mae Moore of Red

Rock, and Debra Linn and husband, Bill, of Colcord; three uncles,

Vance Olin Horsechief and wife,

Robert Theodore (Ted) Left Hand,

Sr., of Pawnee, OK, born December

8, 1937, passed away peacefully at

his home in Tulsa, OK on Sunday,

September 6, 2015. Robert was

the beloved husband of Lupe Left

Hand, Tulsa, OK, loving father of

8 children, 2 adopted daughters, as

well as 3 step-daughters: Georgia

Left Hand, Tampa, FL; Cynthia

Zimmers, Fort Bragg, NC; Victoria

Left Hand, St. Louis, MO; Carmen

Left Hand, Deceased; Robert

Left Hand, Jr., St. Louis, MO;

Rebecca Left Hand, Nestor Falls,

ON; Sylvia (Denise) McIntosh,

Sperry, OK; Karen Chisholm,

Coweta, OK; and Deborah O›Hara,

Broken Arrow, OK. In addition to

his children, Robert was the proud

grandfather of 33 grandchildren

and great grandfather to 13. Born to

Sam Left Hand of Concho, OK and

Emma Skye (Young) Left Hand of

Pawnee, OK, after the death of his

mother, he was raised by his uncle

Sam Young of Pawnee, OK. Robert

proudly served his country in the

United States Marine Corps from

1956-1959. During his free time,

Robert coached football, boys› and

girls› basketball and boys› and girls›

softball. A champion fancy dancer in

his early years, Robert later moved

on to straight and traditional dance.

Robert was a devout Christian who

gave his life to the Lord in 1985. He

used his faith in the Lord to lead

many young people to the church

through sports. Many called him

brother, uncle, and friend. Robert

is preceded in death by his parents,

Sam and Emma Left Hand. Uncle

Sam Young, his brothers Sherman

Left Hand, William Left Hand,

Samuel (Phillip) Left Hand, and

Francis (Butch) Left Hand, sister

“Lou” Topetchy, daughter Carmen

Left Hand, and grandson, Clarence

(CeeJay) Kelly, Jr. Robert’s wake

was held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday,

September 9, 2015 at the Pawnee

Nation Roam Chief Building,

Pawnee, OK with Warren Pratt, Jr.,

officiating. Interment was held at

the West (Chaui) Indian Cemetery,

Pawnee, OK with a traditional

mourning feast immediately after.

Services under the direction of

Poteet Funeral Home, Pawnee, OK.

Angela Dawn Brown was born

December 16, 1982 in Tulsa,

Oklahoma. She left with the angels

to move to her Heavenly Home on

September 12, 2015.

Angela played softball during

her preteen years. She was a

cheerleader during middle school.

She enjoyed both activities. She

graduated from Collinsville High

School. Angela’s favorite television

show was “Keeping up with the

Kardashians.” She and her sister

enjoyed and bonded over this show.

She adored cats and her favorite

color was purple.

Angela had three beautiful little boys

whom she loved unconditionally.

She was a loving mother, daughter,

sister and friend. Her family was

her world. She leaves to cherish her

memory……..

Angela’s son, Aden J. Williams

was also killed in the same tragic

accident that took the life of Angela.

Aden was 11 years old at the time

of his death. Obituary information

could not be located for Aden.

Obituary for Dewey A. Butler Sr.

September 22, 1964 – September 18,

2015

Dewey A. Butler died on September

18, 2015 in Oklahoma City. He was

50 years old. His graveside services

were held on September 21st at the

Butler Family Cemetery. Dewey

was the son of the late George H

Butler Sr., and Juana M. VanAerna

M. Butler, Dewey was born on

September 22, 1964 in Pawnee.

He was raised and educated in

Cushing, Oklahoma. Following

High School, he entered into the

U.S. Marine Corp. After leaving the

Marine Corp. he returned home to

Cushing.

His father George H. Butler Sr., one

sister Darlene Butler and a brother

Roland Butler preceded Dewey A.

Butler in death.

Survivors include his mother, Juana

M. Butler and his companion,

Melanie Butler, four children:

Dewey A. Butler Jr., Jaime Jo Eagle,

Thomas Butler and Frances Butler.

Leaving behind his siblings: George

loved

outdoors,

running the funeral services at the

home of his mother, also we want

to thank the Pawnee Veterans for

the dinner they held for the Butler

Family. We fully appreciate the

Honor Guards of Pawnee who for

four days stood watch over my son,

Dewey A. Butler Sr., from the start

to the grave burial. They are truly

dedicated to their fellow Man till the

end. Dewey A. Butler Sr. was proud

to be a Pawnee.

We appreciate the Pawnee Nation

Obituary for Treva Louise Diamond

Treva Louise Diamond went to be

with her Lord, October 14, 2015 at

St. John’s Medical Center in Tulsa

with her loving family by her side.

Treva was born August 8, 1948 to

Horace and Jean (Nelson) Taylor

in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Treva

graduated from Caney High School

in Kansas.Treva spent her life

serving others as a Registered Nurse

from 1987 until she passed, she

worked at the Pawnee Hospital and

the Cleveland Area Hospital many

years. She loved spending time with

her family, especially K’Sea her

granddaughter. As a Nurse Treva

went above and beyond what was

expected, to help many people in

the communities she served in, she

was a kind and caring nurse. Treva

will be missed by all who knew

her.Treva is survived by two sons;

Chris Smith and Rusty Diamond,

one daughter; Sherri Smith, and

one Special granddaughter; K’Sea

Cleveland, two sisters; Donna

Taylor and Darlene Miorandi.

Treva was preceded in death by her

parents Horace and Jean Taylor,her

husband; Marvin Diamond, and son

Darin Diamond. Services were held

Saturday October 24, 2015, at the

Pawnee Indian Baptist Church with

Rev Duane Pratt Sr. officiating. A

Private Family Burial followed and

dinner was served at the Pawnee

Nation Roam Chief Building.

Serving as Pallbearers were Randy

Moore, Ralston Moore, Ryland

Moore, Robert Shillings, Clifford

Shillings, Jake Leading Fox.

Services were under the direction of

Poteet Funeral Home.
