Community Cémments

Shelia Beck District 9 Spoke on the importance of committee meetings via zoom for the Tribal

membership.

Sharon Hunt read Rebecca LaClaire’s community comments that were sent via email. (see below)

I'm currently working with a group to remove the Red Raider mascot in Gaston County, NC. As I'm

doing my part | would ask that the Lumbee Tribal Council separately write to the Gaston County

Board of Education asking for the removal of this mascot. Mascot were also addressed during the

recent NC State Board of Education meeting after the State Advisory Council on Indian Education

yearly report. | encourage you to view this meeting which is on youtube. | also ask that you email

the NC State Board of Education asking them to keep mascots on their agenda and to address this

issue. Both emails carry significant weight. Also have you received a report from the Lumbee

appointees on the State Advisory Council on Indian Education?

I'm still asking the Education Committee to address Dr. Olivia Oxendine’s remarks in that podcast

and to really ask yourself do we have the right representation at the state level for our people.

Vaccine: | understand the vaccine event had a low turnout, but the tribe needs to host another

vaccine. | serve on the state workgroups for COVID. Our people are not going to the clinics and

hospitals to get vaccinated. Not in the numbers they expected. If you want more Lumbee's

vaccinated, then you need to hold a vaccine drive.

It's been 6.5 years since | mentioned out of territory. Formula increase does not determine if you

can implement services. |'m asking again that out of territory is on the IHP for 2022.

Recently LRDA made an announcement about Lumbee Homecoming. The Tribe was not mentioned

as a partner. | don't know about you, but there is no tribe without the people, no homecoming 7

without there being a tribe. So what am | missing here and why is there no partnership mentioned?

We can only assume and I'm not trying to be that person, but this needs to be addressed. It was

quite sad to even read that announcement and no mention of the Tribe. | do not put that blame on

council; however, | think you would agree that a partnership.is needed.

Lastly, I'm asking that you vote to give access to meetings via zoom. We all knew and expected

you to go back to the turtle, what | didn't expect is for you to wait at the last minute to address zoom

and then snatch it away from members. Do the right thing which is vote to bring zoom back and go

from there.
