Hopi Tutuveni Attempts to Gather Updates on Hopi Tribe’s
Current State of Leadership Affairs
By: Romalita Laban, Managing Editor - Hopi Tutuveni
Kykotsmovi, Ariz. – Tuesday, September 3, 2024 and since August
7, 2024 Hopi Tutuveni has received contact and inquiries about the
Hopi Tribe’s current state of leadership affairs.
Many folks have various conceptions of what a newspaper is supposed to publish and what is appropriate reporting. It is a goal of Hopi
Tutuveni staff and the Editorial Board to continue remaining a good
source of information, while following best guidelines and ethics, and
stands determined that the Hopi newspaper cannot publish gossip, hearsay, rumors and innuendo for the sake of democracy.
As of Tuesday, August 27, 2024 during a “gathering” in Hopi Tribal Council Chambers, in addition to Hopi Tribal Secretary making a
statement that, “…since Hopi Tutuveni is here, this is off the record…”
Hopi Tutuveni did not agree nor disagree with the Secretary, however,
staff informed those Hopi Tribal Council members that were present,
including the Hopi Tribal Secretary, about the recent contacts and inquiries being received.
Tutuveni urged the Council to seek aid from Hopi Tribe Office of
General Counsel in issuing a written statement or press release, to
ensure its Hopi public is being made aware of the state of affairs and to
ensure transparency, as well, for Tribal employees.
Tutuveni also expressed concern about the Chairman’s health and
hoped something in writing could be issued to reduce what has been
described to Hopi Tutuveni as feeling like they, the Hopi public, are
being “kept in the dark.”
The Tutuveni is just as much in the dark, as the Hopi people, due to
no contact and non-response as of this date from Hopi Tribal Leadership, regarding the functional status of these tribal offices and the
present chain or line of authority throughout the tribal government.
The Hopi Tribe, Office of the Chairman and its official public relations source needs to issue press releases concerning the extended
medical leave for the Chairman and any actions taken against any of its
Representatives and/or its Officers and anyone else, for that matter.
Until we get official confirmation of when, why and by whom anyone
has been suspended and/or is under investigation, anything we publish
would be nothing more than speculation based on what inquirers are
notifying staff about.
The Tutuveni is anxiously awaiting to receive formal statements and/
or press releases concerning the operational and administrative status of
the following tribal offices - Offices of the Chairman and Vice Chairman, Tribal Council Secretary and/or Office of the General Counsel.
Hopi Village Representatives are also encouraged to inform their village members and issue statements to Tutuveni, as well.
Further actions taken by the Hopi Tribal Council regarding continued leadership will also need explanation and reasons by and for those
sources, as well, including the nomination and official action to seat
Wendell Honanie, Village of Kyakotsmovi Representative, as the pro
tem Presiding Officer of the Hopi Tribal Council as of Sunday, September 1, 2024.
With a quorum present and as the pro tem Presiding Officer, Honanie
called the September 1, 2024 Hopi Tribal Council 4th Quarter Session
to order and presided over items I. CALL TO ORDER through III.
ROLL CALL.
Maude Yoyhoeoma, Tribal Council Representative, Village of Sipaulovi was not present to be sworn in and certified during Item II. CERTIFICATION OF COUNCIL REPRESENTATVE AND APPOINTED
OFFICIALS. Presiding Officer Honanie called for a recess at approximately 10:08 a.m. with Hopi Tribal Council reconvening its session on
Tuesday, September 3, 2024 at 9:00 a.m.
Hopi Tutuveni staff arrived at the Hopi Tribal Council Chambers
at approximately 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 for Item
11. “Discussion & Possible Action – Email dated August 29, 2024 Re:
ANDREWS NA AND LETTER 8.29.2024. From Fred Lomayesva,
General Counsel, Office of the General Counsel. **Time Certain on
September 3rd, 2024 at 10:00 am”.
Tutuveni staff was informed, by Hopi Tribal Council Representatives,
present in Chambers, that quorum was not established at the 9 a.m.
starting time, so there was no meeting. Hopi Tribal Secretary also confirmed that quorum was not established and attempts to meet tomorrow,
Wednesday, September 4, 2024, will be tried once again.
Just as Hopi Tutuveni has done, the Hopi public is encouraged and
can also contact the Hopi Tribal Secretary’s office for further information, details and inquiries at 928-734-3132.

Kykostmovi, Ariz. – June 26, 2024 Immunizations are your best
defense against severe illness if you are diagnosed with the Flu, RSV
and CIVID-19. The season of germs and viruses will continue to be
amongst us; the best protection to avoid severe illness and sickness is
to get updated on your family’s immunizations. You may have been
hearing family discussing COVID-19 diagnosis being a result of large
gatherings within the month of June. Gatherings with family during the
summer season is common due to the ceremonial and cultural activities, graduation celebrations, birthday celebrations and planting parties.
The Hopi Health Care Center encourages and recommends the following:
1.
Everyone 6 months and older, regardless of current vaccination
status, should get an updated COVID-19 vaccine to protect against
COVID-19 illness.

September is Childhood Obesity
Awareness Month
Submitted by: Kaleena Kewanwytewa, Diabetes Prevention Educator - Hopi Special Diabetes Program
Kykotsmovi, Ariz. - September 3, 2024 This month we are focusing on Childhood
Obesity. A lot of times we, as families, are away from one another due to everyday
life of work and school. It is very hard to monitor what our children eat while they
are out of our sight. The health of our children should be a priority along with our
health. Taking care of our bodies will contribute to our minds and souls also becoming healthy. Thus, will lead to a happier and confident child. So, as one parent whose
children are continuously snacking, here are a few factors we can try to avoid to help
our children make healthier choices. Remember, a little helps a lot when it comes to
our children. Take some time to encourage our little ones to eat healthy and share the
benefits of eating healthy.
