Wa-s-un-pa Wi

(Wah shoon-pah We)

This month, the Dakota Word for July is Wasunpa Wi or the Moon when

the Geese shed their feathers. The name of the Moon / Month can vary

from region to region, tiospaye to tiospaye. Some refer to the month of

July as the Moon when the chokecherries ripen. This year, we chose to

honor our feathered kodas of the north.

Did you know?

Canadian Geese, the species most commonly seen in our region cannot

fly durng a period from early June to early August. This period is known

as the molting process, where birds loose their feathers, which are then

replaced by new healthy feathers just in time for relocating to warmer

climates. In the northern regions geese tend to molt later whereas

southern flocks can begin molting as early as spring.

Dakota Significance

The Canadian Goose and other migratory birds marked. the changing

seasons for all who observed them throughout time, Their flight was

often celebrated and ther geese were often revered as beings capable of

delivering prayers for good health and healing to the grandfathers of the

north.

In addition to being a significant food source, their feathers, wings and

other body parts were preserved and utilized in ceremonial artifacts and

ceremonial events. The blessings that this elegant being brought to the

people was recorded in oral traditions, teaching Dakota children virtues

and how to respect their winged relatives.

undergoing an installation of solar

storage batteries for the solar panels,

which will be mounted on the roof.

Each battery is approximately 200 lbs.

and there are 160 of them providing 160

kW per hour. Once completed the

Government building could be powered

for up to 2 days and be recharged via

generators durng an outage or
