Proposed Data Collection: Public Comment; Leukemia and Other

Cancers Among Chernobyl Clean-up Workers in Lithuania

SUMMARY: In compliance with the requirement of Section 3506 (c) (2) (A)

of the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995 for opportunity for public

comment on proposed data collection projects, the National Institutes

of Health (NIH), National Cancer Institute (NCI) will publish periodic

summaries of proposed projects to be submitted to the Office of

Management and Budget (OMB) for review and approval.

PROPOSED COLLECTION: Title: Leukemia and Other Cancers Among Chernobyl

Clean-up Workers in Lithuania. Type of Information Collection Request:

renewal. Need and Use of Information Collections: A cohort study will

be conducted to investigate the risk of radiation-induced leukemia and

other cancers, and of occupationally related cancers, among 7,000

workers from Lithuania who were sent to Chernobyl to clean-up after the

accident there in 1986. The workers will be asked to respond to a mail

questionnaire or an interview that collects information about specific

duties performed during the Chernobyl clean-up, occupational exposures,

other cancer risk factors, and incident cancers. The information will

be combined with similar information from Estonia and Latvia and used

by the National Cancer Institute to determine site-specific risk

estimates for cancer based on various exposure patterns. Frequency of

Response: One time; Affected Public: Individuals or households; Type of

Respondents: Chernobyl Workers. The annual reporting burden is as

follows: Estimated Number of Respondents: 7,000; Estimated Number of

Responses per Respondent: 1; Average Burden Hours per Response: 0.5;

and Estimated Total Annual Burden Hours Requested: 3,500. There are no

Capital Costs to report. There are no Operating or Maintenance Costs to

report.

REQUEST FOR COMMENTS: Written comments and/or suggestions from the

public and affected agencies are invited on one or more of the

following points: (a) whether the proposed collection of information is

necessary for the proper performance of the functions of the agency,

including whether the information shall have practical utility; (b) the

accuracy of the agency's estimate of the burden of the proposed

collection of information; (c) ways to enhance the quality, utility,

and clarity of the information to be collected; and (d) ways to

minimize the burden of the collection of information on respondents,

including through the use of automated collection techniques or other

forms of information technology.
