The Environmental Crimes Section (ECS) is empowered to investigate and prosecute violations of additional criminal statutes when such violations arise in the course of environmental crimes investigations, subject to provisions that expressly assign certain matters to another division, see e.g., 28 C.F.R. §§ 0.55 (Criminal Division), 0.70 (Tax Division), or otherwise require prior authorization from another component.
