WINNEBAGO PUBLIC SCHOOL GRADUATES THE LARGEST SENIOR CLASS IN WPS HISTORY
Written by: Allison Levering
Page 3 photography: Garan Coons

WINNEBAGO, NE – On Sunday, May
14th, Mother’s Day, The Winnebago Public
School graduated its largest class in history, with
60 students walking the stage. The ceremony
began at 2:00pm in the Winnebago Public School
gymnasium, where graduates proudly received
their diplomas.
The commencement opened with the
rendition of the Flag song sung by the New Breed
singers and a cedar blessing by Craig (Tunny)
Cleveland Jr. Thank you, Tunny, for taking the
time to individually feather off our graduates.
WPS 2006 alumni William (Willy) Bass took the
floor as our commencement speaker. William
began his speech by honoring all the mothers
in the community and thanking them for their
dedication to our graduates. “When we talk
about what our legacy could be, monumental
things happen.”
Class of 2023 Salutatorian Sae Doxey
(Bear clan) acknowledged the mothers in the
community and especially her classmates for

WPS students are officially alumni after they moved their tassles! Congrats class of 2023!

their outstanding accomplishments and triumphs
throughout their high school years, specifically
during COVID. She also greatly thanks her mother,
Angel, and her sister, Janae, for being strong,
reliable figures in her life.
Class of 2023 Valedictorian Alexander George
(Bear clan) quotes American poet EE Cummings in
his speech. “It takes courage to navigate these new
waters and stay true to oneself.” Alex also thanks his
mother, Iva, for all his dedication, love, and support
during high school. Alexander and Sae received the
Nebraska College Preparatory, Susan Buffet, and the
Academy Student scholarships.
The Ho chunk renaissance team was also
on the scene showing support, gifting the male
graduates medicine pouches and female graduates

bone necklaces to symbolize their accomplishment,
and wishing them luck with their degrees. The
bone necklaces represent wealth and hierarchy to
the Winnebago people, such as education being an
investment in oneself.
The medicine pouches as Bleu St Cyr
explains, “These younger men will be the fathers of
their homes one day, and to make sure they guide
their families in a good way, we want them to use the
tobacco in its rightful way, that’s why we are gifting
them these pouches.”
Congratulations, class of 2023, the largest
graduating class in WPS history! May you all find
your passions and thrive wherever you put your
degree to use. The community stands beside you all.

LIFT UP YOUR EYES

THE GREAT BAGO BANK HEIST

Submitted by: Pastor Ricky Jacobs

Submitted by: Ben Crawford, Musuem Curator

Have you ever questioned the ways of
Mauna? Have you ever said 'my God' would
never allow that to happen? Have you ever
grown impatient with God and complained to
Him?
The chosen tribe of Israel had been blessed
time and time again. They were provided
with grain from heaven, no less, the bread
of angels. They could gather the honey like
flakes each morning and bake it into bread.
They did not have to sow the seed, pull weeds,
or separate the grain from the chaff. This was
not good enough for them. They detested this
'miserable' food.
They spoke against Mauna. How did Mauna
respond? He responded in a way that you
would not expect. You might even reason
that your God would not do that. Mauna sent
venomous snakes which bit the complainers
and they died.
The people came to Moses their God-appointed
leader and said, “We sinned when we spoke
against Mauna [YAHWEH] and against you.
Pray that Mauna [YAHWEH] will take the
snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed for
the people.
Did Mauna take the poisonous snakes away?
He DID NOT. Instead He instructed Moses to
make a snake out of bronze and place it on a
pole. And anyone who is bitten could lift up
their eyes and live. Or they could be obstinate
and die.
We often pray that Mauna would take away our
disease, our suffering, our trials. Sometimes

Ma u n a an s we rs ou r p raye rs an d
mercifully does what we ask. Sometimes
He says wait. And at other times He says
no. (Did Mauna take away COVID?) In
each of these responses He wants us to
lift up our eyes to Him in faith.
Mauna has His ways of dealing with
sin and its consequences, death and
banishment. He offers a compassionate
way for you and for me to be reconciled
with our Creator. It deals with lifting up
one's eyes, but not to a bronze snake.
Today the way to paradise is in lifting one's
eyes in faith the Son of God who was lifted
up on a pole.
In answering Nicodemus' question on
how can one be restored spiritually, Jesus
gave this answer: Just as Moses lifted up
the bronze snake in the desert, so the Son
of Man must be lifted up, that everyone
who believes in him may have everlasting
life in paradise. [see John 3:14-15]
Lift your eyes in faith to Jesus as your Lord
and Savior! Or not.

What are the side effects of antidepressants?
The number of people who have some kind of
side effect from taking an antidepressant is about
the same for all the antidepressant medicines.
However, the side effects of each medicine may
be different, and some medicines are likely to
cause some side effects more often than others.
The most common side effects listed by the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the
antidepressants discussed are:
• Nausea and vomiting
• Weight gain
• Diarrhea
• Sleepiness
• Sexual problems
Other more serious but much less common side
effects listed by the FDA for the antidepressant
medicines discussed can include seizures, heart
problems, an imbalance of salt in your blood,
liver damage, suicidal thoughts, or serotonin
syndrome a life-threatening reaction where
your body makes too much serotonin). Serotonin
syndrome can cause shivering, diarrhea, fever,
seizures, and stiff or rigid muscles.
If you are having suicidal thoughts or other
serious side effects like seizures or heart
problems while taking antidepressant
medicines, contact your doctor immediately.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is
available at 1-800-273-8255 (TALK) or go to www.
suicidepreventionlifeline.org.
Some people have symptoms after they stop
taking certain antidepressant medicines. These
are called “withdrawal symptoms”. Withdrawal
symptoms include headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, and anxiety. You should
never stop taking your medicine without first
talking with your doctor.
• More people had these symptoms after they
stopped taking paroxetine (Paxil, Paxil CR)
and venlafaxine (Effexor, Effexor XR).
• Fewer people had withdrawal symptoms
after they stopped taking fluoxetine (Prozac,
Prozac Weekly).
Ask your doctor
• Which antidepressant medicine do you think
might be best to treat my depression?
• What side effects should I be looking for, and
when should I tell you about them?
• How will we know if it is time to try a
different amount of medicine or a different
medicine?
• Do any of my other health problems or
medicines affect how well the antidepressant
might work?
• Should I also see a talk therapist or counselor?
• What effect that NOT taking medicine for
depression may have on my life, work, and
relationships?
• The cost of the medicine.

Although today there is no bank in
the town of Winnebago, 116 years ago in 1907
there existed the Winnebago State Bank.
Although small, the bank would come to be
involved in some exciting history. At that time,
much of the Tribe still lived closer to the river
and many of the businesses in town were run
by non-natives, including the bank. Having
opened in 1907 the bank was close to where
Rise Up Nutrition now stands. The unlucky
bank was robbed only a shortly after it opened.
At some point around the early
morning hours of May 21st the telephone
lines between Homer and Winnebago were
cut and the owner of the nearby Winnebago
Poolhall heard the sound of breaking glass,
and later the sound of a several explosions.
The explosions were apparently dynamite
used to break open the bank safe. After the
first explosion the Poolhall owner and other
men went out into the night to witness armed
men going in and out of the bank, working
to retrieve the money from the safe. Around
$1,200 worth of cash, silver, gold, and checks
were stolen – the equivalent of almost $40,000
in 2022. Witnesses were held at gunpoint
to prevent them from calling for police.
Eventually the robbers fled north with a team
of horses. Pursers were able to contact Sioux
City police who arrested some suspects, with
one man later being arrested in Montana in
connection with the robbery.
As of May 31, 1907 none of the money had been
recovered and its unknown at if the accused
robbers were convicted as apparently much
of the evidence was circumstantial.

You may need to tr y several different
antidepressant medicines before finding the
one that improves your symptoms and has side
effects that you can manage. It is important to
talk with your doctor about:
• The length of time it may take to try a
medicine before knowing if it is helping you
or if it causes a side effect.
• When you need to let your doctor know
about a side effect from the medicine.
• What role your family and friends might
take to support you while you are treating
your depression.
