President Biden Signed the
Winnebago Land Transfer Act Into Law

WINNEBAGO, NE – President Biden
signed the Winnebago Land Transfer Act
into law today July 12, 2024, bringing a
close to the Tribe’s 50-year effort to restore
approximately 1,600 acres of land illegally
taken by the federal government in the
1970s.
“On this historic day, I am thankful for our
ancestors, including the late Louis LaRose,
who fought tirelessly to secure and protect
our homelands and taught us to how to be
resilient and persistent,” said Winnebago
Chairwoman Victoria Kitcheyan. It has
been an honor to carry on their work and
have the bill signed into law in their honor,”
Chairwoman Kitcheyan continued.
The bill that President Biden signed
into law, H.R. 1240, was introduced by
Representative Randy Feenstra of Iowa
and cosponsored by the entire Nebraska

July 3rd, the first annual “Summer
Toss-up” cornhole event was held at the
Big Screen! Attendees played in a double
elimination tournament. The first-place
winner took home a cornhole set and all
the bragging rights. First place winners

and Iowa Congressional Delegations as
well as Representative Sharice Davids — a
member of the Winnebago’s sister tribe,
the Ho-Chunk Nation. The House of Representatives passed the bill by voice vote on
February 5, 2024.
Senator Deb Fischer (R-NE), along with
Senators Pete Ricketts (R-NE), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), and Joni Ernst (R-IA), introduced
an identical bill and ushered the House bill
through the Senate. On June 20, 2024, Senator Fischer requested unanimous consent
that the Senate approve the Winnebago
Land Transfer Act, which resulted in the bill
being sent to the President. The bill was
subsequently presented to President Biden
who signed the bill into law earlier today.
The Tribe will be forever grateful to Representative Randy Feenstra, Senator Deb
Fischer, Senator Chuck Grassley, Senator

Pete Ricketts, Senator Joni Ernst, Representative Sharice Davids, Representative
Mike Flood, Representative Zach Nunn, Representative Adrian Smith, Representative
Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Representative
Don Bacon, Representative Ashley Hinson,
the House Committee on Natural Resources,
the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, and
the Department of the Interior for aikiruti,
“standing arm in arm,” with the Winnebago
people through this momentous effort.
The enactment of the Winnebago Land
Transfer Act is a testament to the Winnebago
peoples’ persistence, determination, and
commitment to being a good neighbor.
“The Tribal Council would like to thank the
Winnebago people for entrusting us to fight
for this land that is forever ours,” said Chairwoman Kitcheyan.

IRON HORSE CASINO TURNS 20

Early July, Ho-Chunk Renaissance
began their Waje/Ribbon Shirt sewing
class for 20 groups of two (40 total). Materials were provided, upon completion
of the class attendees are able to keep
their sewing machine. Pictured above
is Candace Payer & Wihtha Aldrich
wearing their finished product. More recently, July 15th HCR had their first day
of moccasins class. During all sessions
participants went over Ho-Chunk words
and phrases. Overall, these learning
opportunities connect our community as
well as our culture, Thank you Ho-Chunk
Renaissance!

[Emerson, NE] On July 9th, 2024, the Iron
Horse Bar & Casino located here celebrated
20 years in business. “It’s very nice to see
the operation still moving forward even after
all these years.” said WGDC CEO Sharon
Redhorn-Chamberlain. The Iron Horse Casino operates as a fully owned subsidiary
of the Winnebago Gaming Development
Corporation (WGDC). The WGDC is incorporated under the corporate code of the
Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska as a wholly
owned corporation of the Winnebago Tribe.
Opening its doors for the first time in 2004
the evolution of the property has been gradual and steady. Operated since inception by
the WGDC as a Class II gaming property,

as defined by the Indian Gaming Regulatory
Act of 1988 (IGRA), the Iron Horse remains
a vital part of the local Emerson, Nebraska
community. “We’ve really come a long way.
More than what most people even know
about.” Redhorn-Chamberlain continued.
“Our operation is set up to create opportunities for our people through jobs and other
training methods. I’m proud of what we
continue to accomplish because our people
benefit first from everything we do.”
In 2004, following the decision of the US
Supreme Court to not hear the case won by
the Santee Sioux Nation in Federal District
Court regarding operation of Class II gaming
within the State of Nebraska, the Winnebago
Tribe entered the field boldly but with caution. “The tribe wasn’t sure how to proceed
to be honest. All we knew was the larger

issues needed to be addressed and Class II
gaming provided one route toward that goal.
We secured the location, set it up, opened
the doors, and never looked back.” said
the former WGDC CEO, Brian Chamberlain.
Those larger concerns included protecting
the western side of our reservation from being diminished or ‘disestablished’ by one of
the courts. That kind of attempt was made
in South Dakota against the Yankton Sioux
tribe, among others.
“Providing our people with job opportunities and helping them to grow as managers
and even executives is my favorite part of
what we do here.” said WGDC Board Chair,
Janet Bird. The WGDC has been for quite

some time now nearly fully staffed by Winnebago tribal members and Winnebago
household members. The CEO is a tribal member as are the managers and supervisors.
“That has been one of our highest goals – to hire and train our own people to succeed.
We place them into positions of authority because we know they can fill the roles and do
a wonderful job. We trust our own people. We’re more than happy to promote our own
people too.” the WGDC CEO elaborated.
As a Class II gaming property, the facility is governed by the Winnebago Tribal Code
[Title IX] and meets all requirements of our gaming law to be in compliance with those
rules. The facilities are licensed by the Winnebago Gaming Commission as are each of
the staff members.
“Over these 20 years the operations have seen a whole lot of change. Some of it good,
some of it not, and some really strange!” Redhorn-Chamberlain said with a chuckle. “Working
as a cashier in the early days it’s wild to think about what’s happened over here. I’m glad
we still make good on what we set out to do. Now hopefully soon Class III will come through
and change us even more.” she continued. The Winnebago Tribe opened the doors for
negotiations with the State of Nebraska regarding a Class III gaming compact earlier this
year. [see previous WIN story] The document is with the legal teams now. The WIN has
not received an update on the status of that process as of press time.
“Be sure to come help us celebrate during our 20th anniversary promotion coming up
on the 20th of this month.” their CEO stated. “We always have a good time and you’re all
invited.” Congratulations on 20 years, Iron Horse! May you have many more to come. – WIN

for 17 years.]

Winnebago Public Schools to Expand HoChunk Dual
Language Immersion Classes
Winnebago Public Schools has reached an agreement to fund an expansion of the HoChunk Dual Language Immersion class for the 2024-2025 school year. The class is a joint
venture between the HoChunk Renaissance Program and Winnebago Public School. The
goal of the program is to develop more HoChunk speakers by teaching school curriculum
in both the English and HoChunk language starting in the first grade. The first cohort of
the HoChunk Dual Language Immersion class was set to end once that group of 1st grade
students finished 3rd grade. A proposal to consider continuing cohort one through 6th
grade, and begin a second cohort of 1st grade students was presented to the Winnebago
Public Schools Board of Education. The WPS School Board unanimously approved the
expansion at the May 13th board meeting. Winnebago Public Schools and the HoChunk
Renaissance program are excited to expand this program that is vitally important to our
community in Winnebago.
WPS provides the funding and access to students, while the Renaissance program
provides the teachers with the knowledge of HoChunk language and culture. Winnebago
Public Schools Superintendent Kamau Turner says “Having students that are connected
to their language and culture is an important piece of our goal to improve the quality of
education for Winnebago Public School students. Expanding the dual language program
is another step towards preparing our students for their futures”. The second cohort is
planning to start with 1st grade students in the 2024-2025 school year.

Letter to the Editor

JESUS OUR SAVIOR
LUTHERAN OUTREACH

Dear Winnebago Indian News,
My dad, Robert Franklin Nash, is a Winnebago Indian and he is turning to be 102 years old.
He reads the Winnebago Indian News. Can you
please print an article about him. I am sending
a picture also.
He was born July 14, 1922 in Winnebago,
Nebraska and is the grandson of Josephine
Wilson Nash. He grew up in Thurston, Nebraska.
Robert served in the Army during World War
ll from 1942-1946 and was part of the European
Theater of Operations.
He graduated from the University of Utah
and was in the first graduating class from the
school of Pharmacy in 1950.
Robert moved to California in 1950 and married Lorraine Oblock in 1951. He has 4 children,
8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
He retired from being a pharmacist in 1982.
He still lives at home in Concord, California.
Robert’s wife, Lorraine, lived to be 100 years
old. His secret to longevity is to keep moving
and eating Lorraine’s home cooked food which
she made from scratch.

Happy 102nd
Birthday!

“Wages of sin versus free gift”
The apostle Paul writes that one is either
a slave to sin or, by the grace of God, a
slave of righteousness. One either receives
the wages of sin or is blessed with the free
gift of God.
Paul writes: ‘When you were slaves to sin,
you were free from the control of righteousness. What benefit did you reap at that time
from the things you are now ashamed of?
Those things result in death! But now that
you have been set free from sin and have
become slaves to God, the benefit you reap
leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of
God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord’
[Romans 6:20-23 NIV].
Our natural sinful tendency is to either
make light of the seriousness of sin; or to
condemn one so harshly that the sinner feels
that there is no hope, only shame, regret,
frustration, humiliation, and utter despair!
The apostle Paul balances between these
two extremes. Paul never lessens the seriousness of disobeying God. Disobedience
results in death - namely physical death.
God’s Word further reveals that there is also
a second death; everlasting separation from
the loving presence of Creator God.
Creator God sent His Son, Jesus, to en-

By: Pastor Ricky Jacob

dure both the physical death as well as the
second death - the feeling of being forsaken,
or banished by His heavenly Father. Jesus
in spite of being a slave of righteousness,
paid with his suffer and death the wages of
mankind’s sin.
Paul, in his letters to God’s saints, never
neglects to offer the grace of God. Through
faith in Jesus - one is promised everlasting
life. It is my prayer that you appreciate both
of these sides of God.
One more point to make regarding Paul’s
letter to those to whom he is writing this letter
(namely those who are loved by God and
are called saints at Rome). Paul confronts
the readers with the reality of their nature sinful; as well as the world in which they live
- immoral. As called saints the readers are to
abandon the ways of their past and to avoid
going back to their former sinful lifestyles.
What are these former sinful lifestyles. I
ask you to get out your Bible and read from
chapter one of Romans, beginning at the
eighteenth verse all the way through verse
thirty-two.
In closing, if you consider yourself a
Christian, a follower of Christ Jesus then you
are to live as a slave of righteousness to the
glory of God, obediently walking in the ways
of Creator God.

Case No. CV24-126

What is the perception the public has about suicide victims?
They, and their survivors, are viewed as “guilty” victims. The word guilt is virtually hyphenated with suicide. Even the language reflects this. Kindly intended people will say
such things as, “Oh, it must be terrible for that family dealing with all that guilt”, or “Oh that
poor family; they must feel guilty”. There is no other cause of death that assumes a guilty
complicity on the part of a family.
This has made it very difficult to form suicide survivor grief groups. In ten years these
groups have not achieved a powerful national organization that charters groups or helps
develop facilitators. By contrast, Mothers Against Drunk Driving quickly grew nationwide,
and had a tremendous influence on legislation. Their victims are generally perceived as
“innocent” victims of bad people.
Do “bad” or “busy” parents cause suicide?
NO. Good or bad parenting is obviously important, but it is irrelevant to suicide. To say
bad parents cause suicide is like saying that only children of bad parents get cancer. Busy
and career oriented parents who move a lot because of their jobs do not cause suicide.
There are many “bad” parents whose children do not kill themselves; there are many
“good” parents whose children do. Our society has too often fostered the belief that suicide
occurs in “bad” families – “bad and sick” families. Historically, blaming families and cheap
talk are all society has been willing to spend on suicide prevention.
Does rock music, Dungeons and Dragons or Satanism cause suicide?
No. A person who dies by suicide may be preoccupied with any one of these things,
and after a suicide there is a human tendency to blame it on someone or something. Some
music, games and Satanism are very unpopular, and therefore are convenient to blame.
People also look selectively at suicides.
They look at the suicides of people who were drawn to rock music, but not those drawn
to classical music. They notice the suicides of people who played Dungeon and Dragons,
but don’t notice the suicides of people who played Monopoly. They notice the suicides of
people who dabbled in Satanism, but overlook the suicides of Bible students.
Are some auto accidents really suicides?
Yes. There are some claims that up to 75% of single occupant auto fatalities are suicides.
There is very little research on autocide, but the studies there are indicate that one to five
percent of these facilities are suicides. It is usually not difficult to determine the cause of
death when an individual uses a car as a suicide method.
In such cases the driver hit a fixed object with no evidence of skidding, braking or other
evasive actions. The driver usually had a previous history of depression and talked about
suicide. When there are alcohol or drugs as an added element, the risk to the driver is
higher. Alcohol and drugs make people less inhibited and more prone to impulsive actions
which includes suicide.

Question of the Issue:
What’s your favorite thing about powwow? (Food, dancing,
visiting, snagging or whatever)
Garan: I have had the honor to serve as the Master of Ceremonies for our

Winnebago Homecoming Celebration. When I was asked and presented tobacco by the commander, I told him that I would try my best and that I wouldn’t
take the stipend. I was told if a veteran asks something of you, it’s a blessing.
My payment came in the form of a favorite memory last year. It was Saturday
night’s grand entry and before the victory song I announced that we are still
here. It went something like “Even though they called us “merciless savages”
in the U.S constitution, we are still here, They enacted the Indian Removal
Act and genocide against Indigenous Nations but...we are still here, in the late
1800’s they enacted the “Kill the Indian, Save the man” policy but yet... we
are still here, they tried to relocate us to metro areas under the 1956 Indian
Relocation Act hoping that they wouldn’t have to honor treaty obligations but
yet we are still here!” By the end of that announcement the whole powwow
erupted into cheers, war hoops, and lulu’s because in that moment everyone
was proud to be Indigenous!

Brian: Powwow is always a good time to be with friends and family. To just

enjoy the weekend and take it all in. It is truly a homecoming celebration. The
drums always sound good, especially when they sing the family songs and
do the traditional dances. Food everywhere is great to try, but nothing beats a
good NDN burger for me. I hope everyone has a great time this year.

Tyler: My favorite thing about PW is the environment it creates. It’s always a
good time seeing everyone and watching the arena in movement. Other than
that, the food for-sure!

Kevin: I would have to say my favorite part of powwow is getting to see old

friends and family.
It used to be snagging LOL But now they turned into old friends or baby mamas.

Christina: To see all the dancers dancing their style in grand entry, its such
a beautiful sight with the smell of campfires and frybread grease in the air,
theres truly no other place to experience that awesomeness.

Bethani: My favorite thing about powwow is watching each of the various

dance categories & seeing all the different styles of regalia! It’s always such
a beautiful sight to see.

Allison: My favorite thing about the Winnebago Homecoming celebration

is the specialty dances (Swan, Snake, Fish, and Green Corn dance) on
Thursday evening. I like these dances because they tell our story as Hochunk People, as these dances have never changed after hundreds of years
of dancing. I also enjoy Saturday night live!

FOOD REVIEW:
Garanteed Restaurant Review:
Los Altos Changes The Pace From Other Mexican Restaurants
SOUTH SIOUX CITY, NE - When a new
restaurant emerges in the Siouxland area, it
seems that it is a hit or miss. Most of the time
a restaurant will give it a go for about 2 years
and then shutter. Los Altos does have a lot
of momentum to become a long-standing
restaurant, especially because of the wordof-mouth marketing. Before I tried it, I have
heard from fellow colleagues and friends
“Hey have you tried that new restaurant?”
then it was usually followed by “they make
the Guacamole right in front of you!”.
Being the curious cat that I am
especially when it comes to food. Me, the
ol lady and my son Gavan gave it a whirl.
This location is at the corner of the Cardinal Pointe strip mall in South Sioux City,
NE. Over the years I have seen a Chinese
Restaurant, Pizza Restaurant, and a few
other businesses use the property but didn’t
make it. Los Altos opened for business in
April 2024.
Walking into Los Altos I was impressed
by the décor. I was expecting the usual
Mexican Restaurant type of decorations,
but I was met with a modern and rustic
vibe. We were seated in a booth which was
comfortable and large enough for the food.
The day of the visit was a Sunday, so a lot
of families were in the place. There were
plenty of staff on hand, so it didn’t take
long to get our menu’s and get a helping of
chips and salsa. While looking at the menu
which was nicely designed and explained,
I spotted what everyone was talking about.
They had a Guacamole station on a mobile
cart. The gentleman came over to our table

with the mobile guac station and asked if
we would like some? “Heck ya!”, he then
proceeded to process three avocados in a
stone mixer while adding the spices, lemon
juices and salt. It was tasteful and fresh
however it was marred by the fact that the
chips provided were pretty hard and a little
stale for my liking.
Thinking that this would be a first of many
trips to this restaurant, I ordered the steak
ranchero entrée. It was the first item listed
on the menu, so I decided to commit. Their
version of the steak ranchero featured a 12
oz Ribeye marinated with ranchero sauce,
served with rice, beans and flour tortillas. My
son Gavan got the New York Strip, which he
said was good. The Ol Lady got a La Altena
Salad which featured grilled chicken breast
cut in strips with grilled sweet corn, chopped
avocado, cherry tomatoes in a spring mix.
She also said it was good. My review of the
steak ranchero was that it was flavorful, the
ranchero sauce poured on the ribeye had a
nice kick. I am used to grilled ribeye’s that
are thicker, this particular ribeye was pretty
thin. The rice and beans were good but
normal. I don’t think I will order this entrée
again, but I would recommend it to those
who want steak with a lot of flavor for dinner.
Overall, Los Altos excels in the atmosphere, the experience of having someone
make Guacamole in front of your dining table
and the presentation of its entrees. The price
is a little high for my liking so I think I would
go there for special occasions but not casual
dining. On the HAZZAT scale it gets a good
4.1 out of 5 HAZZZ!!! – Garanteed!

EDITOR’S REVIEW:
Minions Power Illumination
Movie Review: Despicable Me 4

By Brian Chamberlain
Photos: (studio)
Ever since they appeared on the
screen over a decade ago, those adorable and serendipitous Minions have
been unstoppable. As an irreplaceable
part of the overall story throughout the
entire Despicable Me franchise, the
yellow creatures stemming from the
creative minds behind one of Illumination Studios most successful set of
movies, cartoons, and other appearances once again powers this latest
movie forward. The fourth feature film
in the series, Despicable Me 4 debuted
in theaters in June of 2024. Surely set to
be one of the favorites for blockbusting
ticket sales as the summer movie hits
opened to big audiences around the
world.
Despicable Me 4 is the latest in the
set of films where the main character
is anti-hero and one time villain, Gru.
Now married and a father of his own
child, Gru still has the three young
‘gorls’ in tow. Not ageing much in the
films, despite years passing in real life,
the characters are set to appeal to an
audience of a certain age, and it does
just that. With all the hallmarks of great
movies made for children, this flick
doesn’t disappoint when it comes to
gags, comedic character jokes, and of
course the never-ending antics of those
now world-famous Minions.
Produced by equally famous Illumination Studios (Universal Pictures)
the CGI animation has now evolved to
become nearly flawless. The most miniscule details are so well prepared that
to the young eyes seeing the film for the
first time, they probably never knew of
pixelation or even heard of something
called cartoons. The computer driven
animation abilities of these studios is
driving the medium to new heights, and
this franchise is part of that revolution.
Remember how 3-D was once all the
rage? Illumination now captures those
effects with the greatest of ease, even
placing them into the backgrounds
no longer having to be the main focus
because the rendering is just that

amazing.
Voice actors Steve Carell, Kristin
Wiig, and Will Ferrell lead the cast as the
story unfolds with Gru, his compatriot
bride, and his minions attending his
High School reunion. As a former villain,
the student body is made up of some of
the world’s most notoriously sly characters. They are all on display and ready to
cheer their villainous heroes. The school
principal is their mentor and drives to
outshine them all. But still, she has an
award to bestow. Once Gru knows it will
be given to his arch nemesis, he takes
the opportunity to capture this rival as a
new agent working to stop his one-time
counterparts.
The movie is jam packed with Minion
mischief and running jokes that stem
from this episode’s storyline and from
previous films as well. The non-stop energy they have and amazing resiliency
to overcome nearly every obstacle with
clownlike ease make the story light and
fun for the age group the movie is meant
to entertain. With plenty of innuendo in
the story to keep the adults interested,
Despicable Me 4 may not be the best
of them, but certainly earns its place in
the library.
Seeing this movie with my grandkids
they all liked it a lot and even laughed,
especially when the Minions were being
Minions and at the youth-oriented jokes.
On our world-famous HaazZaat! scale,
Despicable Me 4 banana-nabs a solid
4 Haazs. State of the art, excellent CGI;
everything expected from Illumination /
Universal Studios.

MEET OUR 2024 HEAD DANCERS

By Brian Chamberlain / Tyler Snake
Photos by Tyler Snake / archives
[Winnebago, NE] Greetings to you all from
Winnebago! The 158th Homecoming Celebration will be held here in Winnebago from July
25th to July 28th, 2024, at Veteran’s Memorial
Park. The celebration is nearing completion of
its preparation phase, so we did a quick interview with a couple of special people who will
be a large part of the weekend’s activities. We
had some fun too. We want to introduce part of
the head staff for this year’s powwow – our head
dancers. Ladies and Gentlemen, please say
hello to Head Woman Dancer – Christina Parker, and Head Man Dancer – Dillon Bearskin.
WIN (W) Please introduce yourselves.
Dillon (D) My name is Dillon Bearskin. My
hocak name is Sagadera (sp?). I was named
by my great-grandfather, Ben Bearskin, Sr. [My
name] It means: ‘fast one.’
Christina (C) My name is Christina Parker.
My Indian name is Hiugiwi mani wiga. That
means Walking Queen and I’ll be serving as
this year’s Head Lady.
(W) Have you ever done the Head Dancer
before?
(D) At smaller powwows I have. But never
at Winnebago.
(C ) This will be my third time doing it for the
Winnebago powwow. The last time was during
the pandemic. Everyone was pretty much virtual, but we still celebrated for one day.
(W) What are you looking forward to with
the powwow?
(D) I enjoy the drums that they invited. I’m
really looking forward to that. They have a pretty
good line up. Every session, every intertribal
should sound pretty good. The thing I like about
our powwow is we have the traditional dances
too. We have the Snake Dance and the Fish
Dance; women have the Swan Dance. I think
it’s just more personal than it is at other powwows. That’s what I like about ours, it’s unique
to our own tribe and how we do things.
(C ) What I’m looking forward to is kinda the
same as Dillon with the drums and the visitors,
and the overall vibes – what it holds every year.
And just being able to dance with everybody
because everybody’s excited for it and happy
to be there. Despite the hot days, the dancing
and the singing make it all worth it.
(W) If you were to tell your younger self
about what you’ve learned [about dancing],
what would that be?
(D) Relax! Wanting everything to be perfect,
it doesn’t have to be, and letting people help
me. I ran the Harvest Celebration [dance], and
I didn’t know how to do the [one] dance, so I
had help. Just kinda enjoy it. Enjoy being able
to dance and have a good weekend instead
of stressing if everything was right.
(C ) Tell myself to pay attention! Just enjoy it
and there will be people whom are gonna help
you along the way.
(W) How long have you been dancing?
(D) I’ve been dancing since I was a Tiny Tot.
I took a long break as an adult though because
of some family [passings]. As an adult I haven’t
danced as much as I did then, but I’m getting
back into it.
(C ) I started dancing when I was 7 or 8.
My mom bought me a jingle dress from Mrs.
Leedom. I think I only danced about 2 years
with that dress. Then I took a break until I was
about 17 or 18 then picked it up again. Then
danced about 10 years after that but had a
loss in the family. Then [after] I’m starting to
dance again.
(W) Did you always dance the style you
do now?
(C ) Jingle to traditional.
(D) I danced fancy all the way through my
youth, then as a teenager I switched to grass.
It was hard to get bustles made, so it was the
stuff that my mom and grandma made and
put together.
(W) Do you remember your feathering?
(C ) Yeah. That was done by Ed Logan and
my name was given by my Coka Warner Earth
wanagira.
(W) Do you create what you wear today?
[regalia]
(C ) My mom didn’t sew. So, once I started
to figure out those things I started making my

own outfits.
(D) Try a little bit. [laughs] But my
mom’s real particular on how things are
done. My whole grass dance outfit I’ve
helped make a little bit, doing the ribbons,
cutting things up. But I’ve always played
sports so I’m running around. I kinda have
my own time. I think I helped a ‘little bit,’
but I don’t want to take credit away from
their work. [laughs]
(W) As far as the powwow is concerned
this year, is there any message you want
to give?
(D) I have non-native friends that are
coming from my unit in the military. The
one thing that I told them was this is a
celebration for veterans. And they’re veterans now, so I told them you’re welcome
to come. Don’t be scared because there’s
a bunch of natives around. [laughs] It’s for
you guys so that’s the general message
I gave. It’s a homecoming celebration to
honor those who’ve served, and those
that’ve passed on and served. That’s why
we raise the flags and stuff.
(C ) I would say mine is toward the
youth to keep carrying on this way of life.
Pick up what you can and just carry it on.
(W) Do you have a message for those
wanting to dance?
(D) Ask. I know some people don’t
have tegas or aunties or they don’t have
someone to teach them. Just get out there
and figure things out.
(C ) Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
(W) Other than your own [category],
what do you like to see in the arena?
(C ) I appreciate the grass dancers.
That’s probably my favorite to watch,
other than the applique dancers. I stop to
watch them.
(D) Fancy [men’s] and sneak up for
traditional. I like it when they all go toward
the middle and dance. For women I enjoy
the women’s fancy and jingle. I appreciate
fancy because my mom still does it.
(W) As far as the food is concerned, tell
us some of your favorites.
(D) My favorite is the lemonade stand
and the NDN taco bites.
(C ) I like the Healthy Food stand. Because they have fresh food and the frozen
fruit drinks. Just more healthy options.
Because when you’re hot, grease is not
intriguing to me [laughs].
(W) In closing are there any other things
you’d like to add?
(C ) I want to thank the committee for
thinking of me in this way and for letting me
have the honor this year. And the veterans
also. I look forward to leading and doing
my best this year.
(D) I would say the same. [thanks],
The powwow committee for asking me.
Because I know it’s a lot of work. All the
people help the powwow run and those
who’ll be there. It makes things more entertaining, and those coming from a long
way away.
Dillon - Welcome to Winnebago. I hope
you enjoy yourself. Dance hard. Drink a lot
of water. Check everything out and enjoy it.
Christina - Welcome to Winnebago.
Home of the oldest powwow in North
America. Enjoy yourself and hope to see
you in the arena.
We want to thank both of our head
dancers for taking some time to speak with
the WIN. They both had a great outlook
on the coming festivities and understand
the fullness of the job they were asked to
do. We spoke about flag raising and the
Walk/Run and both said they hope everyone who participates has a wonderful
time doing it. The long days are certainly
part of the position, and helping lead the
dancers through all the sessions, as well
as the specials, is something they are
looking forward to throughout the 4-day
weekend. Thank you both for stepping
forward, along with all the head staff and
drums. The powwow is always an exciting
time and 2024 will certainly be one of the
best. – WIN

HoChunks Celebrate in 1921
Thank you to Karen Bass at the Enrollment Department for sending us this way back
item. It is a Homecoming Celebration Powwow announcement from 1921. Amazing!
Originally printed in the historic newspaper – Winnebago Chieftain. Their July 14, 2021,
issue held this information about the coming festivities. It was held along the now named
Highway 77. Back then, however, that road was called George Washington Highway. The
route was also slightly different, running along the bluffs of the hills and crossing over the
creek near the present-day county line north of Winnebago. The names of some of the

WinnaVegas Makes Major Donation to
Annual Winnebago Powwow!
Sloan, Iowa – WinnaVegas management announced today that the
Casino Resort is donating $200,000 to the Winnebago Tribe’s annual
powwow. 2024 marks the 158th
annual homecoming celebration of Chief Little Priest. The celebration will
be held July 25-28 at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Winnebago, Nebraska.
The Annual Homecoming Powwow is the longest running homecoming
celebration in the United States.
In the summer of 1866, upon the return of the Winnebago veterans, a
homecoming festival was held. Shortly thereafter, Chief Little Priest died
of wounds received in army service. An annual memorial celebration is
held in remembrance of his sacrifice. The year following his death, Little
Priest’s service flag was raised as a symbol of the tribe’s allegiance to their
country. This ceremony remains an important part of each celebration.
Later the gatherings became known as the Annual Powwow.
Today, the Annual Winnebago Homecoming Celebration is a multi-day
event that features food and arts/craft vendors, the Wilderness Walk/Run,
Native Dance and Drum contestants from various parts of the United States
and a Grand Entry every day during the celebration.
“WinnaVegas Casino Resort is proud to support the Winnebago Tribe’s
efforts on hosting one of the nation’s most celebrated powwow’s” said
WinnaVegas General Manager Tom Teesdale, “We wanted to be a part
of this event because it celebrates the Winnebago Tribe’s rich history and
is one of the tribe’s most important cultural events of the year.”
