Our masthead this issue features legendary
Hochunk / Winnebago tribal chief, Whirling
Thunder / Wakajagi wixka [1791? -1865] Chief
Whirling Thunder accompanied Chief Little
Priest during the days of our tribal movements
as our people traded lands and entered into
treaties with the US Government that established our current reservation homelands.
Whirling Thunder is credited with securing
access to physicians’ services as the treaty
was agreed upon. This provision helped establish healthcare for our people ever since. The
Winnebago Tribe honors Whirling Thunder to
this day as his name is on the local gymnasium
and is also the title for one of the health care
programs for our people. Whirling Thunder
Wellness Center has helped countless numbers of tribal members, of all ages, fulfilling the
legacy created by Whirling Thunder for better
health. We are featuring him here in light of another year’s Health Fair hosted by WCHS and
12 Clans Unity Hospital. Whirling Thunder’s
image and words are still featured inside each
of the facilities to which he is honored.

WCHS HOLDS ANNUAL HEALTH FAIR

By Brian Chamberlain
Photos Brian Chamberlain
[Winnebago, NE] The Winnebago Health
Department held its annual health fair on a
gorgeous late spring day here. The annual
event sponsored by the Winnebago Tribe’s
Health and Wellness fields put forth another
great event that always garners a wide
array of participants. Hosted by 12 Clans
Unity Hospital, the event happened on the
west side of the facility on the lower-level
patio. “The day is gorgeous! I’m glad we
came by.” Said one tribal member who
attended the event.
Winnebago Comprehensive Health

Service (WCHS) and the Winnebago Tribe’s
Health Department have been hosting this
annual fair for over 30 years. “I didn’t know
that it’s been going on that long. But I’ve
been coming to it since I was a little girl,
so yeah.” stated one of those who we interviewed during the event. This year’s fair
was also covered by the Big Voice Radio.
Both hosts for the station, Bethani Redhorn
and Garan Coons, who is also the Communications Officer for the Tribe were on
hand to help build awareness of the event
and welcome guests.WCHS staff member
Crystal Snowball was one of the many tribal
members working at the event. She told the
WIN, “We had so many shirts to give away.
There’s not many left. I like seeing our people
wear them around.” Along with the numerous

t-shirts that were handed out from across the
board, the various sub-departments also had
other collateral items to share. Of course, the
main purpose of the event was to provide
valuable information to our people for all their
health care and wellness needs.
Everything the Winnebago Tribe offers in
this important field was on full display at this
year’s health-based fair. All kinds of things
from prescription services and information
to dental procedure and daily care to child
wellness and immunizations were present.
Even long-standing efforts at women’s health
care needs and awareness, like breast cancer
prevention & examinations, were available.
The blood drive bus was also onsite for anyone wanting to help save a life by donating
some blood.

its 8-week pilot program. In an effort to
promote the workforce, the Community

in the workforce and child poverty. During
the length of the program, opportunities
to create and develop skillsets through
hands-on learning, workforce readiness
training, and life skills are made available
to tribal and community members. Shout
out to those who supplied resources for
the program: Ho-Chunk Construction

SUMMER BEGINS IN WINNEBAGO
By Brian Chamberlain
[Winnebago, NE] Every year the Memorial
Day Holiday marks the unofficial beginning
of summer. This year the kickoff began with
a literal bang. With the end of the school
year, kids are free to roam, and the sunshine
abounds creating the most delicious time of
year to be outdoors. With all this activity there
comes the need to review what is going on in
and around the community. Safety is always
on the mind of our parents. Nobody wants to
spoil anyone’s fun, but there must be a minimum level of attention paid toward keeping
everyone safe and out of harm’s way.
Because temperatures rise well into the
80s or above, most kids like to get into the
pool, or even in the sprinklers. Some even
find the local pond where mud and all the
things that make being a kid fun exist. To
help in this realm we’re going to cover some
of the basics in each of the areas we feel
could be the most helpful. We’ll begin with
water safety.
Water Safety Tips:
When at the swimming pool, only those
who can swim should enter any depth unsupervised. Drowning takes place in any
depth, even inches, especially for small
children. For those kids who are too young or
have not yet mastered the skill of swimming,
parents or a capable adult should always accompany them. Also, when possible, attend
swimming pools with On Duty Lifeguards.
For more information please visit: https://
www.poolsafely.gov/parents/safety-tips/
Fun on the water also comes in the form of
boating and using other watercraft. In these
situations, always make sure the kiddies
are securely fastened inside a well-fitted
life jacket. Water tends to be unsettled, and
the slightest rocking of a boat or craft can
cause one to fall overboard into the water.
Lifejackets are one of the best ways to help
keep everyone safe. For more information

blog/2022/08/know-you-go-boating-safetytips-noaa
https://www.nsc.org/community-safety/
safety-topics/seasonal-safety/summer-safety/boating

And who doesn’t remember playing in
the mud, or at a pond or other standing water
reservoir? These areas abound, especially
following a thunderstorm. Always make sure
proper supervision is being given to help
avoid any unnecessary injuries. Also, some
water-borne illnesses can be contracted.
Local authorities should be sought when
any questions arise. For more information
please visit: https://www.watersafetyusa.org/
prevent-unsupervised-access
Finally, everyone needs to be properly
hydrated. Including pets! Don’t forget about
our four-legged loved ones. Pets don’t perspire in the same way humans do, so having
access to clean, fresh water is an absolute
must for any pet parents. Remember, as the
temperatures climb, the water you provide
can save a life. Also, if you take your pet
with you to the local water feature, for more
information please visit: https://www.medvet.
com/pet-water-safety/
In this same way, people also need

to ensure their water intake is adequate.
When working out in the sun or doing
any activity when the weather is hot
always be sure to drink enough water.
“I always need reminders about drinking water during the heat.” Says David
Edwards CEO at WCHS/12 Clans Unity
Hospital. The WCHS has provided some
documentation following this article that
can help keep you well within the range
of good hydration. For more information

https://health.unl.edu/10-tips-staying-hydrated-summer%C2%A0
As the summer season rolls on the
WIN will continue to bring you valuable
information regarding how to take care
of yourself and those you care about.
The heat is a very real thing, so do your
best not to underestimate the effects it
can have on people and pets. Always
check on those without access to adequate air conditioning, especially on
the hottest days. And never, ever forget
about the pets that depend on you for
fresh water and shade. Be safe this
summer and have a great time!

Letter to the Editor

SUICIDE IN INDIAN COUNTRY PART 48
When Being There and Listening Are Not Enough
Sometimes, in the midst of an emotional storm, listening is not enough.
When listening and caring are not enough, other actions must be taken. For
example, some depressed and/or angry suicidal people will refuse your help.
For young boys or men, but sometimes for women of any age, pride stands
between them and their willingness to accept the very assistance that may
help them find a way to live. Sometimes suicidal people refuse to even talk
about their problems.
What to do?
The answer is to ask yourself a simple question: “If I were angry or depressed or terribly upset and not thinking clearly, would I want those who
love me to stand by while I killed myself?”
The answer is “NO”! Just as you would not allow a friend or love done or
even a total stranger to gag on a piece of meat when you know the Heimlich
Maneuver, neither would you stand by while a suicidal person makes plans
or tries to carry out an attempt on his or her life. When a life is at stake, here
are some things you don’t need to worry about:
Don’t worry about being disloyal.
Don’t worry about breaking a trust.
Don’t worry about bothering the doctor or counselor.
Don’t worry about not having sufficient information to call for help.
Don’t worry about being disliked. (It is better to be disliked temporarily than
to feel sad and guilty forever.)
Remember, we are only responsible for what we know at the time we know
it, not for things we learn later on. So, if in doubt, act. Call. Reach out. Do
something. Don’t wait. Your courage and willingness to do what you feel must
be done are the only things that count.
What If My Help is Still Refused?
If this is the case, your love and caring must now get tough.
Although suicide is not strictly illegal, the law of the land does not permit
someone to kill himself or herself without first receiving the benefit of the doubt.
The “benefit of the doubt” in this case means that, in the final analysis, suicide
is not an acceptable solution to the problems of living.
This law is interpreted to mean that you may pick up the phone, call the
police, your crisis hotline, or your local mental health center, and have your
loved one evaluated by mental health professionals. These highly trained
professionals, as is their duty, will objectively determine if your friend or loved
one represents “a danger to self”.
If the evaluating professionals believe significant danger to self exists,
and your loved one is not willing to accept an alternative outpatient plan
for treatment with a good faith commitment to remain alive, a superior court
judge may order him or her into voluntary inpatient treatment. The required
treatment is usually no more than a few days to two weeks, and typically
consists of crisis resolution, counseling, and (only if your loved one agrees)
medications aimed at reducing the mental and emotional problems that often
lead to suicidal thinking.
As a caring community, society stands with you against death by suicide.
If in doubt about what to do, do not be afraid to let others decide how at-risk
your loved one is and what the best medicine might be. Such consultations
are usually free.
The involuntary treatment law is a wise law, especially when you consider
that studies show that perhaps 95% of those who took their own lives probably
suffered from a treatable brain disorder, or emotional illness. Further, among
those people who actually make an attempt on their life, only 10% go on to
die by suicide. The message is clear: Treatment works – even if, for a time,
it has to be forced.
WARNING: As suicidal people approach the final decision to die, they often
withdraw from those around them. They may pick quarrels, or ask to be left
alone, and may not return calls. It is as if they are rejecting you so that you
will feel less and less obliged to respond to them. This is the time that people
in a suicide crisis may truly test your patience. They are, by rejecting you,
creating an opportunity to suicide.
If you begin to feel yourself withdrawing from someone you know to be
suicidal, double check your emotions, re-evaluate what is happening between
you and the person, and get additional help.

JESUS OUR SAVIOR
LUTHERAN OUTREACH
“Oh the depth of . . .”
‘Oh, the depth of the riches and
wisdom and knowledge of God!
How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his
ways’ [Romans 11:33 ESV]!
Our Creator offers riches while
mankind settles for poverty. Yes,
the poverty of ending up with
nothing. Nothing but emptiness.
Nothing but loneliness. Nothing
but pain, sorrow, suffering. Nothing but separation from God and
from every good gift.
The thrill of having the riches of
this world vanishes. One cannot
take it with them - when one dies.
Naked one comes into the world
and naked one exits the world.
Yet one often places one’s trust
in the riches of this world and
abandons the riches that Creator
God offers. Ask the rich man in
Jesus’ parable about the rich man
and Lazarus. [see Luke 16:19-31]
Creator God offers the riches of
everlasting life through trusting in
the gift of His Son. Through faith
in Jesus one is blessed now with
this blessed hope.
Our Creator offers wisdom while
mankind would rather be foolish.
Who wants to be labeled as a fool?
The book of Proverbs presents
many words of wisdom regarding
a fool. ‘The way of a fool seems
right to him . . .’ [Proverbs 12:15a]
.Or in the case of something going
wrong or when one is disappointed: ‘A fool shows his annoyance
at once . . . ‘[Proverbs 12:16a].
‘As a dog returns to its vomit, so
a fool repeats his folly’ [Proverbs
26:11]. ‘Do you see a man wise in
his own eyes? There is more hope
for a fool than for him’ [Proverbs
26:12].
Our Creator offers knowledge

By: Pastor Ricky Jacob

while mankind settles for google or wikipedia. In the place of
searching the Scriptures - man
searches the internet. Put another way - mere knowledge will not
profit a man or a woman or a child
spiritually. Mankind’s knowledge
and its benefits are quite limited.
First, man continues to add to
his knowledge and yet, he is unable to solve many of the problems
or dilemmas of the world. Take for
example health issues - cancers
and various diseases - some
of which we don’t even have a
knowledge of what one is battling.
Health care knowledge is limited,
there is no doubt about that fact.
Second, knowing the words
of the Bible, the stories that one
learned at Sunday school, or VBS,
or during Bible study or Sunday
morning Divine Service will not
guarantee one a place in paradise. The devil knows Scripture
but that knowledge only condemns him and those who fall for
his lies and deceptions.
A theological degree can be
quite worthless in the eyes of
God - so just because one has
reverend in front of one’s name
means nothing to God - who looks
in one’s heart. God listens whether
His Word is taught in its truth and
purity, not adding to what He has
said, nor taking away from it.
‘Oh, the depth of the riches
and wisdom and knowledge of
God! How unsearchable are his
judgments and how inscrutable
his ways’ [Romans 11:33 ESV]!
Oh, that one would search the
Scriptures in order to begin one’s
quest in getting a glimpse of the
grace and mercy and compassion
of our awesome Creator!

LIVE CONCERT REVIEW:
Pink Friday 2 World Tour – Nicki Minaj
By Bethani Redhorn
Greetings all! This is my first submission
for Hakewe which will be a review for a
concert that I recently attended. I traveled
to Minneapolis, Minnesota with one of my
best friends and two of my cousins for
the Pink Friday 2 World Tour at the Target
Center. The last time Nicki Minaj performed
in Minneapolis was in 2013 as one of the
opening acts for Britney Spears! I thought
that was pretty dope as she is breaking
records in 2024 with the highest grossing
rap tour by a female and top 10 highest
grossing rap tour by any rapper of all time.
To be able to say I attended her SOLDOUT
Pink Friday 2 World Tour brings me a whole
new (peace) of contentment! As soon as
we stepped into the Target Center, you
could feel the energy radiating with shades
of pink everywhere! Maneuvering through
crowded lines to make our way to the floor
was a journey but worth it once we got
to our seats. We had floor seats with an
amazing view and for someone who needs
prescription glasses (that I did not bring),
it was a sight to see to say the least! Nicki
Minaj performed a total of 30 songs, the
show began at approximately 10:10 PM
and went on for a grand total of 3 hours
and 33 minutes! The feeling of pure bliss
is all I felt for the entire 12,780 seconds,

that is the best way to describe what I felt
watching her performance. She brought out
a special guest, Monica, who performed for
about 15 minutes in between Nicki’s sets.
The visuals, the props, the setup, the special effects, the choreography, the vocals,
the outfits, the hair and makeup, and the
energy were all serving to perfection! All
my thoughts and opinions for Nicki are very
much biased as I have had nothing but love
for her since the beginning of her rap career.
My sister Madisyn and best friend Jordana
introduced me to Nicki Minaj, which at the
time was during her come up. It has been
on my bucket list to make it to a show of
hers to see her in real life, human form with
my own eyeballs! I would attend another
show without hesitation, which just so
happens to be that she announced a 2nd
leg for her US tour and that has my name
written all over it! As a less than part-time
concert connoisseur, she is one of my
top shows. (I have not been to as many
concerts as I wish I had, still building my
inventory.) So far, I have been to Drake
(2013), PARTYNEXTDOOR (2014), The
Weeknd (2022), Dreamville Fest (2023),
and now hers can be scratched off my
wish-list! Nicki broke my Haaz Zatt scale,
she is getting 555 Haaz Zatts from me!

Editor’s Movie Review:
Fearless FX – Shogun
By Brian Chamberlain
Photos FX /
There are times, although few,
when a movie or show can compare to the book it came from. I
think we’ve found one of those
‘diamonds in the rough.’ In this
week’s edition we are going to
review, “Shogun.” A limited television series presented by FX.
Available via the streaming platform HULU.
I recall my mom watching the
first iteration of the television
series, Shogun, which was broadcast back in the early 1980s. That
mini-series was based on the novel
of the same name written by James
Clavell. His book, published in
1975, was a tremendous success
hailed by critics as one of his best
works. As part of a series of stories
about the region, Clavell’s Asian
Saga told gripping tales of how life
was in those places of the world,
with historically fictionalized flare.
Clavell captured the storytelling
magic needed to keep readers
enthralled. Shogun became one
of the gems in the series which
sold millions of copies world-wide.
The story of Shogun takes place
in 1600s feudal Japan. During an
era when the fight for control of
the nation was just as fierce as the
need for unity among the sects,
Clavell opens the door by giving
the audience a rare opportunity
to glimpse the inner circles of a
very private world. One where the
leadership navigated the political
landscape just as carefully as the
battlefield.
Based loosely on historical
events and persons, Clavell’s
story features the pathways of two
ambitious men. John Blackthorne,
“Anjin”, an English sailor who finds
himself shipwrecked in a land unfamiliar. Juxtaposed with the unfolding pathway of Lord Toranaga,
a man skilled in battle and politics,
but who finds himself under attack
from nearly all sides. Lady Mariko
joins the two men. A woman from
a tainted past who is just as adept as any man when it comes to
dealing with people in her native
Japan and with foreigners alike.
A number of skilled directors
take the helm of these ten episodes in the limited series. The
actors playing the main roles are
Hiroyuki Sanada (The Last Sa mauri / Rush Hour 3 / 47 Ronin)
who plays Lord Yoshii Toranaga.

He is one of the five Regents ruling
Japan. Cosmo Jarvis (Lady MacBeth
/ Hunter Killer / Annihilation) plays
English sailor John Blackthorne, the
displaced but ambition driven man
who would potentially tip the scales
of power. Anna Sawai (Ninja Assassin / F9 / Pachinko) plays the lead
female role of Lady Toda Mariko.
Each of the leads are exceptionally
strong in their portrayals. The cast of
characters is equally striking as the
writing for the series never ceases
to amaze.
Overall, the cast is extremely well
chosen. Remarking on the individual
performances, it would seem as if
the casting director should definitely
earn an award. Also, what is most
notable about this show is that the
dialogue is almost entirely spoken
in Japanese. With English flares all
throughout, the story captures such
incredible depth by combining the
two languages giving the story more
than anyone could anticipate from a
simple English language over-dub.
With music and production design to match, the imagery is lush,
dynamic, and spectacular. Shogun
is sure to be on the list for all the
awards that come next season when
they are announced. It would not
surprise me at all to see it win them
either.
On our world-famous HaazZaat
scale I am giving Shogun a rock solid 4 ¾ Haaz. This series is seriously
good television. I could not wait for
each episode as the weeks went on.
There is talk of additional season
development, but as of now, these
10 gorgeous shows are the ruler of
our Shogun-esque world.
