MESSAGE FROM THE PAWNEE NATION PRESIDENT
Nowa,
Another fall has passed as we look forward to winter and the
holidays which follow. Our hope is this newsletter finds you well.

The Pawnee Nation newsletter is our
way of communicating the services,
activities, and doings of our staff
and our programs. It gives a picture
of the past few months and what
everyone has been up to here on the
reservation and beyond. In these
tough economic times, the Pawnee
Nation looks to find ways to provide
needed services for our people
W. Bruce Pratt
through direct assistance, elderly
President
meals, education assistance, clothing
for our school kids, rides to and from appointments and funeral
benefits. We provide motor vehicle registration, including RV’s,
ATV’s, boats and motorcycles. We offer Indian court services and
have an Attorney General on staff to help with legal matters. Our
Law Enforcement keeps our tribal citizens safe. We help our people
in domestic abuse situations, children issues, elder abuse, and
alcohol and substance abuse help. The Nation provides guidance
with environmental issues, land issues and our game rangers patrol
our Indian lands. We have our transportation department which
looks after our roads and bridges. We maintain our enrollment
department, diabetes program, child care, and food distribution
services. I’ve probably left some off, but that’s a lot of services. We
also provide JOBS: Employing our people and the community. I’m
proud of our employees and all that they do. Many of them go
unrecognized, working every day for you, our Pawnee people. We
do all this in spite of the current Presidential administration trying
to cut all of the Indian programs in our country. The Pawnee Nation
is a leader in Indian Country and at the forefront of pushing back
on the efforts to hurt our Tribal economies. Our voice is heard and
respected in the hall of Washington, DC.
There have been some setbacks in our Pawnee Tribal Development
Corporation. Some changes have occurred in the leadership there,
and we believe it will significantly help to get the PTDC to where it
needs to be. We need our PTDC to be strong and healthy because
it provides needed revenues which the Pawnee Nation applies to
help in our services to the people. I believe that the new changes
will bring better results in the days ahead.

AARP RECOGNIZES NATIVE ELDERS AT 10TH ANNUAL INDIAN ELDER HONORS
One by one, the names and accomplishments of 50 Indian
Elders were shared with an audience of more than 800 at AARP
Oklahoma’s 10th Annual Indian Elder Honors celebration at the
National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma
City on Tuesday, October 2, 2018. As the distinguished honorees
were announced, they stood to applause, and a medallion was
presented to each honoree.
AARP State Director Sean Voskuhl said, “This event celebrates
a lifetime of service from these distinguished elders who have
positively impacted their community, family, tribe and nation.
Whether they are well-known or exhibit quiet devotion to
family and community, this year’s AARP Oklahoma Indian
Elder honorees represent what is best about Native American
people: love of family, dedication to culture and respect for all
people.”
AARP honored teachers, veterans, artists, tribal leaders, and
culture preservationists. Among this year’s 50 Indian Elder
Honorees from 28 Oklahoma tribes and nations were:
A third generation, leading metalsmith in the Native American
tradition and a recipient of the National Endowment for the
Arts National Heritage Fellowship. (Bruce Caesar, Pawnee
Nation of Oklahoma)

Deb Echo-Hawk, Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma Keeper of the
Seeds (not pictured), honored for bringing back ancestral
seeds in a sovereign practice in hopes to feed our own people.
Through partnerships with our homeland, local university and
tribal college, the Pawnee Seed Preservation Project now has
18 gardens in Nebraska and seven gardens in Oklahoma and
researches to sustain the seeds. Much of the crop’s bounty is
used for elder meals and tribal ceremonial feasts. Volunteers
have stepped forward in projects related to food and culture,
while increasing socialization of older individuals, promoting
activities for grandparents raising grandchildren, and building
community pride. (Deb Echo-Hawk, Pawnee Nation of
Oklahoma)

Gwen Shunatona accepts the AARP award on behalf of Deb Echo-Hawk
since she was on travel at the Third Annual Conference on Native American
Nutrition as one of the speakers.

AARP Board Chair Joan Ruff said, “Each one of our honorees,
like our founder Dr. Ethel Andrus Percy, has dedicated his or
her life to serving their tribes and their communities – and
none has let age stand in their way.

HONORING ELDERS
Holiday times are beautiful times to visit loved ones. Currently, we
like to visit on FaceBook but also love to visit Face-to-Face. In this
regard, the Pawnee Nation Title VI
Program offers opportunities for
socialization for our revered elders
Monday – Thursday for noon
meals. We would like to have you
think of what socializing means to
our elders.
It is exciting when we hear of elders
visiting elders. Wanda and Florence
invited Linda, Ann, and Jo over several times to the quaint country
home of Wanda and Jimmy. There they have enjoyed late lunches and
great conversation. Linda even took notes when the sisters Wanda and
Florence talk about what it was like growing up in Pawnee. The visits
are heartwarming and kind.

Linda and Ann are part of a group called “The Travelers.” They
are moved to share stories and honor Pawnee men and women by
hosting annual events to do so. Ann remembers how special it was
to have Micki Wolfe facilitate the first event to honor women in the
community; Bruce Pratt and Matt Reed had a turn, too, to honor men
and the doctors of the tribe. Each honoree was able to tell their life
highlights filled with stories that led to their successes and current
thoughts about our people.
Elders inspire … after all it was Nora Pratt’s prayer that inspired a few
to have the Pawnee Seed Preservation Project bring back the seeds
of our ancestors. Elders draw on the past to tell stories that not only
reflect our rich history but humor us in thoughtful ways.
We have planned a socializing calendar in January to come to socialize
with Elders and support our local retailers. It will be Fridays at 9:30
am: January 11th and 25th meet at the Bear Claw Bakery & Café (618
Harrison Street) and on January 18th meet at the Daylight Donut
Shop. We will have door prizes … See you there!

THE TRIBAL HISTORIC PRESERVATION OFFICE (THPO)

This photograph is a site in Ellsworth County, Kansas
visited and written about by the Army in the 1840s. It
was a regular campsite for Pawnees during our buffalo
hunts. At the time of the Army visit, some Ckîris and
Čawîs were camped there together having just returned
from a kûskahâru with our Kirikûruks âkîtarû. In the
photo, you are looking at the excavated site of a tipi
ring which has been refilled with sand to protect it. The
field there has been protected by the landowners since
it was first claimed as a homestead. It holds dozens of
similar tipi rings. The rings are rocks that were laid up
against the bottoms of tipis to stop the wind and then
left in those circles after we moved on. To also show
you how long we used that spot, the other photo is of a
point collected by archaeologists while working on the
tipi campsite but in a filed perhaps 200 yards away. It
is accurately dated to between 2000 and 4000 years old.
From satellite photos, you can see old trails leading to
and away from this area. So Pawnees used the same
camp area and trails for a very, very long time. Our
lands were much bigger than just Nebraska.

1-800-799-7233 National Hotline

Greetings from the Pawnee Nation Ti-Hirasa Healing Center for
Domestic and Sexual Violence, the Violence Against Women
Program! The month of October was a busy time for our program
with the observation of Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the
addition of two new staff members. Amy Kinzie, VAW Coordinator,
and Ashley Hadix, VAW Advocate, joined the Prevention Specialist,
Dina Johnson, on October 1.
With the observation of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the
Pawnee Nation VAW staff participated in several activities to raise
awareness for victims of domestic violence and abuse. On October
5 our staff attended the Native Alliance Against Violence’s Day of
Unity, hosted by the Seminole Nation. This event brought together
legal professionals, advocates, and victims who spoke about their
experiences with domestic violence and abuse. They discussed
practices that have been helpful as well as changes that will help others
in the future.
On October 10, Pawnee Nation VAW hosted a Women, and Children’s
Self Defense Class taught by Pawnee Nation tribal member, David E.
LittleSun, 10th Degree Black Belt, Grand Master, along with Karen
Eden Herdman, 6th Degree Master in the Korean Art of Tang Soo
Doo. Several women and children attended the event where they
learned some fundamental self-defense moves and techniques.
The Prevention Specialist, Dina Johnson, represented the Pawnee
Nation VAW at the Wings of Hope Domestic Violence Walk and Vigil
on October 11 at Boomer Lake.

21

On October 16, the Pawnee Nation VAW participated in the Six
Nations Domestic Violence Walk and Lil’ Monster Dash in Tonkawa.
Our staff set up a booth providing information regarding the Ti-Hirasa
Healing Center for Domestic and Sexual Violence and provided candy
and games to the children there as well.
The Pawnee Nation Fall Festival was held on October 19, and our
program participated by providing candy and flashing bracelets to
the children (which was a big hit). We also gave out flashlights to the
adults that included the information regarding our program and our
crisis line as well.
Pawnee Nation VAW hosted a “Gift for Giving” event, and a come and
go reception for our new staff on October 25. At this event, we were
able to gift a Ti-Hirasa t-shirt to anyone that gave a travel size hygiene
item, beauty item, or canned good for victims in need. We also served
cake and punch as a way to introduce our new staff at an informal
come and go gathering.
The Pawnee Nation VAW Program would genuinely like to express
our appreciation and gratitude for the support we have received from
the Pawnee Nation staff, Pawnee Nation tribal members, and the
community as a whole.
If you or anyone you know is a victim of domestic or sexual violence,
please contact a member of the Pawnee Nation VAW Program. We
can provide crisis intervention and advocacy to those in need. Our
office number is 918-762-3873 Ext. 2, and our crisis number is
918-399-3310.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE PROGRAM (SAP)
We are proud to present you with our Pawnee Nation Substance Abuse Program
and Methamphetamine Suicide Prevention Initiative program updates! Wow!
We had a lot going on within our community, and we’re eager to fill you in
on everything we’ve accomplished this
quarter. Being able to reach the community
of Pawnee with engaging relationships as
well as providing awareness on drug and
alcohol-related issues have and always
will be our mission. We look back with
gratitude for the opportunities we’ve had
to serve our community as well as looking
forward eagerly to the future opportunities
to continue to do the same.
October started with the celebration of Red Ribbon Week within the
Pawnee Public School system. We began the week by having a “Walk
Against Drugs” with all the elementary students and faculty. All the
children were extremely excited and eager to get out of the classroom
to participate in the walk against drugs! Our program also provided
bags filled with prevention materials for not only all the elementary
kids but for the head start, tribal afterschool program, as well as the
Pawnee Middle and High School students. The materials included
prevention worksheet books, pencils, earbuds, and so much more!
Also, we were able to bring in a guest speaker, Joe Fingerhut, to speak
to the children with an anti-drug message. Joe knocked it out of the
park with all the excitement he brought with his presentation. From
juggling to magic tricks and even riding his unicycle, Joe brought
smiles and laughter to all who were in attendance. It was an honor to
have Joe come out to Pawnee and share his positive anti-drug messages
with our community’s youth. He was able to captivate the children
truly and have a lasting effect on each one of them. It was awesome to
see the excitement on all their faces during this awesome week!
To close out the month, the SAP/MSPI Programs also participated in the
Pawnee Nation Fall Festival/ Trunk or Treat event. This event is designed to
give the children in our community a safe way to go out and enjoy the holiday
with their families. Our program passed out candy as well as prevention
materials and even glow bracelets for the kids to enjoy! It was a fantastic time
being able to see all the children in their creative costumes.
We look forward to this time of year every year, and our programs truly enjoyed
every moment of it. All of us here at the Pawnee Nation Substance Abuse
Program and Methamphetamine Suicide Prevention Initiative Program thank
you for the opportunities to reach out to our community and share awareness
on drug and alcohol-related issues.
