On August 30, our Tribal community
gathered for the Coos Dress Transfer
— a moving ceremony that honored our
artisans, the work they put into creating
the Coos Dress Representation, and our
growing relationship with the Daughters of
the American Revolution (DAR).
The Coos Dress Representation carries
not only beauty, but also the spirit of
our people. As Elder Brenda Brainard
shared, “gifting it is like offering a piece
of themselves.” Three of the six artisans
spoke about the importance of the dress,
the artistry of its making, and the teachings
they carried forward from the original
dress. They also shared the significance of
the materials used, such as dentalium and
pinenuts, and the traditional techniques
they studied from the original Coos dress.
Patty Phillips added important history of
the original dress, connecting the past to
the present.
Members of the Tribal Council expressed
amazement at the artistry and thanked
the artisans for their work, as well as the
Culture Coalition and the Daughters for

helping ensure the original dress was symbolized not only the transfer of the

that this new dress carries its own story and shared commitment between our

CTCLUSI’s First Placename Ceremony at haich ikt’at’uu:
Restoring Lands and Restoring Language
Contributed by Dan Kirk, Restoration Projects Manager

haich ikt’at’uu means “Heart of the Big
One” - “Big One” referring to the main stem
of the Siuslaw River. On July 26, 2025
the Tribe’s first Naming Ceremony took
place at haich ikt’at’uu, bringing together
Tribal Citizens and community partners
to celebrate and honor our traditional
languages, traditional homelands.
...and we all repeated after Chief when
he shouted “haich ikt’at’uu!” three times,
and the land was officially
renamed.
haich ikt’at’uu is a 217
acre site just east of
Cushman on the main
stem of the Siuslaw River.
It was formerly named
Waite Ranch, after the
Waite family who owned
and ran a dairy farm
there. They were the
second to last owner
before McKenzie River
Trust purchased the land
in 2010.
Since the time McKenzie
River
Trust
(MRT)

purchased the land, the Tribe, MRT, rainwater from the site. By this time next

Within these 15 years, the Tribe
has seen traditional languages
return to families in new ways
due to a rise in capacity and
programs specific to language
revitalization – in a way, learning
and using our languages helps
restore some of our own natural

simply speaking a language
is a natural process, I mean
that learning and practicing our
traditional languages helps us
reconnect to the ways of seeing
and thinking of our ancestors.

CTCLUSI Canoe Family Takes the Lead in Local Canoe Races
Contributed by Alycia Cossey, Cultural Stewardship Associate

On Saturday, September 13th, Our Tribe joined our
relatives at the Coquille Indian Tribe’s 20th Annual
Salmon Celebration. It was a beautiful day of connection,
culture, and community — both on the water and on the
land.
Our CTCLUSI canoe crews represented our people
with strength and pride in the races:
•

Dugout Race – 1st and 2nd Place

•

Youth Race – 2nd Place

•

Women’s Race – 1st Place

•

Men’s Race – 1st Place

•

Elder’s Race – 1st Place

•

Mixed Pull Race – 2nd Place

Way to represent our Tribe out on our waters!
Meanwhile, on shore, our Department of Culture &
Natural Resources hosted a hands-on activity where
community members and visitors learned how to work
with tule and make headbands. It was wonderful to see
so many people engaging in our traditions and sharing
in cultural knowledge.
Most of all, this gathering was a reminder of the
strength of our relationships with other Tribal Nations. It
was truly a gift to celebrate together, honoring salmon,
water, and the cultural lifeways that connect us all.

Tribal Member Launches New Counseling Practice
Hello, my name is Rachel Schaefer
Glenn, and I’m excited to share that I have
started my own practice, Sit With Me, LLC.
It has been my dream to create a space
where I can walk alongside people in their
healing, and I’m honored to see
that dream come to life. I’m
currently welcoming clients
via telehealth who may be
struggling with anxiety,
depression,
coping
skills, and PTSD.
I’m
passionate
about serving Native
communities and bring
experience working in
tribal settings, including
my internship working at
the Alaska Native Tribal Health
Consortium and with CLUSI at camps. My
practice is grounded in a trauma-informed
approach, and I have specialized training
in EMDR therapy to support healing from
trauma.

IT’S NEVER
TOO LATE!
Want to change your career but
need additional education? The
Oregon Tribal Student Grant can
help support that goal in unexpected
ways.

Launching this business has been both
meaningful and a learning process. I’ve
navigated setting up a HIPAA-compliant
email, phone number, External Health
Records, and a website. I know this
can feel overwhelming, so if
anyone in our community
is interested in starting
their own business or
private practice, I’m
happy to share what
I’ve learned and offer
support.
You can learn more
or connect with me
through my website:

I look forward to walking
alongside those in our community who
are seeking healing and growth.

~ Wedding Announcement ~
On August 9, 2025, Jeremy Petrie and Amy David were
married in a heartfelt ceremony at Rasar State Park in
Concrete, Washington.
Jeremy and Amy’s love story began decades ago in
Millington, where they first met as childhood friends at the
age of 10. At 12, they shared their very first kiss—an innocent
beginning to a connection that would stand the test of time.
Life took them down different paths, but after 37 years apart,
fate brought them back together, and it felt as though no time
had passed at all.
Today, Jeremy and Amy are not only best friends, but also
husband and wife, excited to spend the rest of their lives
together.

Congratulations!
