Elders unite
An impressive number of elders took part in the annual
luncheon at Lucky Eagle Casino & Hotel’s Events Center.

Luncheon delivers biggest and best gathering to date
By Bobbie Bush

O

n a clear and cold morning, 560
people gathered at Lucky Eagle
Casino & Hotel’s Events Center to
participate in the Confederated Tribes of
the Chehalis Reservation’s 2024 Elders
Luncheon. Tribal elders from many Indian
Nations traveled to the event on April 18.
Chehalis elders prepared 500 bags of
goodies the day before in anticipation
of the invited guests’ arrival. The Events
Center was set up for a banquet-style lunch.
Wayne Barr offered an opening prayer. The
veterans color guard performed the posting
of the colors. Rodney Youckton made a few
announcements regarding the agenda and
flow of events for the day, then Business
Committee Tribal Chairman Dustin Klatush
welcomed guests.
Outside of the main entrance to the
casino, Chehalis people worked together to
prepare the fish on a stick salmon specialty.

Tribe shares lasting
gratitude for Denise
Ross’ job well done
By Bobbie Bush

The Chehalis Tribal Wellness
Center’s lobby was full of more
than 50 people who gathered to
wish former Wellness Director
Denise Ross well as she charts a
new path in her life. Those who
gathered on April 25 wanted
to pay their respects and give
praise for her 10 years of
excellent service and leadership.
Denise did not expect the
lobby to be full of people.
She was moved, as was the
audience. Comments from staff
were peppered with teary eyes
of gratitude for the support
Denise has provided to the
Chehalis Tribe through the
years.
General Manager Liu
Long addressed Denise and
the group: “Today marks the
moment we come together
to celebrate the career of our

From page 1

Cooks included Shawn Ortivez,
Hector Canales, Tony Youckton,
Robert Cayenne, Jessie McMahan,
Ricky Charles, Tara LivingoodSchott, Rachel Simmons, Mya
Ortivez and Todd Delamater. They
cooked 44 salmon.
Jessie Gleason served as the
MC and opened the event with
door prizes right away. There was
a contest to honor the oldest elder.
At age 92, Ivan Willup Sr. of the
Swinomish Nation was the oldest
male elder. Liza Smith, 85, was the
oldest female elder in attendance.
The morning progressed
quickly with door prizes. Pictures
with Tacoma Rainiers baseball
team mascot Rhubarb were very
popular with all of the elders. A
photo booth for instant pictures
was set up front near the stage.
Everyone was ready to dig into
lunch. The delicious meal included
salmon cooked over an open pit on
sticks, ham, green beans, mashed
potatoes and a roll.
Our elders were blessed to see
so many people and enjoy hugs
from family, jokes with friends and
lots of laughter. The camaraderie
brought a lighter spirit to the
luncheon than that of other tribal
gatherings.
An invitation from the Hazel
Pete Institute for a Weaving Event
on May 10-11 was extended to
guests.
The three-piece group Elvis
Unplugged played a full set of
Elvis hits such as “Jailhouse Rock”
and “Love Me Tender” to “In the
Ghetto” and “Viva Las Vegas.” The
group also offered a rendition of
“What a Wonderful World” in the
style of Louis Armstrong. It was a
nice set and folks danced, laughed
and even cried a little.
A special recognition was given
to veterans from all branches of
the United States armed forces:
Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air
Force, Space Force and Coast
Guard. Members from each branch
of services was asked to introduce
themselves and share where they
served. This portion was moving.
Our people exhibited the Warrior
Spirit of their ancestors when they
answered the call to service.
The day concluded with the
quickest drawing of door and
raffle prizes in history. People
stayed until the very end because
they had a good time and hoped to
win one of the 55-inch HD TV’s.
The luncheon was a wonderful
time! Hope to see you there next
year.

The annual Elders Luncheon honored proud veterans and
gave participants the opportunity to greet the Tacoma
Rainiers mascot Rhubarb and visit with members from
many other tribes.

3

Delicious salmon was prepared for the luncheon,
intricate handmade jewelry was available for purchase
and the three-piece band Elvis Unplugged offered an
exciting assortment of songs for those in attendance,
among other highlights.

Golf fundraiser supports CTLF’s work
Rousing tournament
offers prizes, bragging
rights and a great
time on the course
Chehalis Tribal Loan Fund
will host its fourth annual Golf
Tournament Fundraiser on Friday,
July 19.
In 2021, CTLF initiated its
inaugural Golf Tournament
Fundraiser at the Oaksridge 18hole Golf Course in Elma thanks
to the generous support of the
Chehalis Tribe, Lucky Eagle Casino
& Hotel and many others. The
event was a resounding success!
Since then, proceeds from
the yearly tournaments have
empowered CTLF to serve our
community by aiding families,
individuals and businesses alike.
Through educational programs
and financial assistance, we’ve
helped people break free from
predatory lending, develop
sound budgeting strategies,
pursue homeownership, explore
entrepreneurial ventures and
secure loans with fair terms.
The impact of CTLF’s work is
felt immediately and profoundly
by Chehalis tribal members,
non-tribal community members
and local small businesses.
This year, the highly anticipated

making a comeback! Participants
also have the chance to win prizes
for Longest Drive, Closest to the

Pin and the Putting Contest.
Players also can purchase raffle
tickets for a shot at taking home
fantastic prizes donated by CTLF
supporters. Lunch will be provided
post-tournament. Beverages will be
available throughout the day.
In response to last year’s tie
between two teams, CTLF has
introduced a tiebreaker to ensure

a clear winner. The victorious
team of four players will earn
bragging rights and have their
achievement commemorated
on the new CTLF Golf Tourney
Trophy, which will be proudly
displayed in our office year-round.
Winners will receive custom CTLF
polo shirts and complimentary
entry to the 2025 tournament.

CTLF’s fundraiser is made
possible by the collaborative
efforts of sponsors and
supporters.
The contribution of
sponsorships and prizes
makes it an unmissable
occasion for golf enthusiasts.
Sponsorship opportunities
are still available, including
the chance for families and
individuals to support the
event by purchasing a custom
18’x12” sign for $100.
The personalized donation
signs will be showcased along
the 18 holes, symbolizing
the community’s united
commitment to CTLF’s
mission.

ooking together as a family helps children
learn basic kitchen skills. Kitchen time is also
a great time to learn about your child's day
and is a good way to spend more time with your child
at home. Kids are more likely to try new fruits and
veggies if they help make them. Below are some ideas
for what your child can do to help in the kitchen.

Remember:

Wash hands before touching food.
Watch children when they are using sharp
kitchen items: knives, box graters,
blenders or hand mixers.
Watch children when they use the stove top or
oven.

A

s a Washingtonian, I was
born and raised in the
Lakewood area. I attended
the University of Washington
where I majored in biochemistry.
After graduating, life took me
to South Korea, where I taught
English for four years. After having
an unforgettable experience, I
returned to the states to pursue my
lifelong goal of dentistry.
I attended the prestigious

University of Michigan School of
Dentistry, which has consistently
ranked in the top five dental
schools in the world.
Upon graduating, my education
and skills would take me into the
public sector, where I worked for
the State of Michigan.
Being homesick and wanting to
share my services with my home
community, life was kind enough
to bring us back to Washington.
I am honored and privileged
to share my skills and knowledge
with the Chehalis tribal
community. During my short

time here, I have felt the care and
greatness the tribe has to offer.
I value the relationship that I
have with each of my patients, so I
do my best to create a comfortable
and relaxed environment. Making
informed decisions about your
body is crucial, so I make sure to
take time in explaining available
options and answer all questions
that you might have regarding
treatment.
My hope is to show that the
dental clinic isn’t scary, but is
a place that cares and helps
patients.

Dr. Richard Yoo has joined the
Chehalis Tribal Dental Clinic.

RETIRES
From page 1

Importance of increasing eye care access

years, Denise has been the
driving force behind our health
initiatives, dedicating herself
tirelessly to the well-being of
our community. Her expertise
and commitment have made a
permanent impact on all of us.
On behalf of everyone here, I
would like to extend our warmest
congratulations on your welldeserved retirement. May this
new chapter be filled with joy,
adventure and endless happiness.
“I also wanted to convey a
message from Chairman Dustin,
who unfortunately cannot attend
your retirement party today. He
sends his best wishes to you as
well.”

Ensuring all people with
diabetes receive an annual retinal
examination can help prevent
diabetes-related blindness.
Exams identify people at high risk
for losing their sight who require
treatment. In addition to preserving
vision, eye exams and laser
treatment of high-risk individuals
is cost effective, saving many health
care dollars annually by preventing
diabetes-related vision loss.
For many people with diabetes,
there are no symptoms of eye
disease and travel to a specialty eye
clinic for a dilated eye exam can be
difficult. Some people might defer
the exam becsause of this. Only half
of American Indians and Alaska

RETINAL EXAMINATION
The Chehalis Tribal Wellness
Center will offer native diabetic
patients diabetic retinopathy
exams from 2-3:30 p.m. May
22/30, 10-11:30 a.m. May 28
and 9-11 a.m. June 11/13. For
questions, contact Christina
Hicks at 360-709-1741.

Natives with diabetes obtain the
annual retinal examination needed
to identify high-risk disease and
prevent vision loss.
