Dear Sir: a ys
ye. A ° ‘
We have developed a need for special flanges, elbows
and return bends, for 2 in. pipe to withstand:-a working

pressure of 500‘Tbs. per sq: in. at a temperature of 800 .

degrees Fuhr.

‘It is preferred that the bolts in these flanges be spaced

in the open, if practical; that is, to space them sé that none
will be directly under the bend, as it is our intention to
connect;a series of rows of pipe together, and for repair-
ing, desire an accessible connection. ' |

We are desirous of any recommendations proposed by
any of the pipe manufacturers, with a full description of
the joint, accessibility, kind of material, location, and
number of bolts used in the fittings they are able to fur-

The Texas ‘Company
cee : Houston, Texas, June 18, 1918. .

a | . | Estimate No. 2025,

Pre-Heater
Mr. F. B. Capen,
Port Arthur, Texas.

Dear Sir: . pee ala

We are forwarding to-day by. Ww ells Fargo Express, two
2” ammonia return bends, 8” center to center. One-of these
bends is made of malleable iron, and is.furnished by the
York Manufacturing Company. This’ bend is supposed to
be for 300# working presse and is painted grey.’ The-
second bend, painted. red, is that regularly ‘furnished ‘by
the Vilter Mfe. Co. for their extra heavy class’ of goods,
and is also for 300% working pressure... The companion
flanges on this latter bend are dropped forged steel. Both.
bends are equipped with male and female fiange connections
-and were supposed to have been furnished with corrugated
copper gaskets, but we note that one has been furnished
with rubber gaskets and the other with lead gaskets,
neither of which, of course, will be suitable for our require-
ments.

We would like to hate these flanges tested for both: heat
and pressure combined, if this is possible, There is no
doubt in our mind but what either of these bends would be
suitaole for.any pressure they would be called upon to
stand in connection with-the experiments which are to be
conducted, but as to whether the combination of heat and
pressure will affect them any, we do not know and would
like to determine: “We regret very much that we have been
unable to.secure these return bends at an earlier date but
it was only vesterday that we received the one from the
Viitet Manufacturing Company. We had hoped to have
secured information and samples from the Crane Co., Clow
& Co. and the National Tube Company, but we have been
‘advised through the Purchasing Department that these
people have not in stock a class.of goods which they could

2674 DX 699.

recomniend for use in connection with high pressure, ‘high
temperature work; so it will be necessary to do what. we
~can with samples.on hand. , © Peat hose

In making the pressure test, it might be well to build up
pressure as much as the small feed. pump, which you-have’
recently installed at the West Side stills, will give-them. If -
we remember correctly, this pump is suitable for pressure
of about 700% with. 100% steam pressure. - a

We are also enclosing herewith a. pencil-sketeh showing
two types of coils, either of which would be ‘suitable for a
pre-heater ~f the kind-we have in mind, if it is possible
to assemble with ease and on which we may take up bolts
in flanges that may develop leaks after heat and pressure |

have been applied. Sketch ‘‘A’’ cutlines the use of
‘4012 8” center to center return bends and will provide one

and one-half 2” pipe tubes per foot of width per coil.
Sketch ‘‘B’’ outlines the use of .6” center to center return
bends which will provide two full pipes per foot of width
“per coil. The only feature in either of these voils which
will be undesirable is that of the apparent difficulty which
would be encountered in taking up bolts between each layer
of coils Of course, we can design a flange in which all bolts
could be reached with a socket wrench but it would take
considerable time to get such fittings and we doubt if under |
existing conditions we conld even persuade manufacturers
to go to the trouble of running any specials thru their shops.
Will therefore thank you to put this question to Messrs.
Fox and Witherup with the view of ascertaining, if pos.
sibie from samples on hand, whether we eould uke. steck
fittings and make provision to take up leaks after coil had
been put in,use, should the coils’ be installed as outlined |
on either one of the sketches on attached drawing.

We personally prefer the scheme as outlined’ inusketch.
‘“‘B"’: that of using the 6” center te. center return bends: on
horizontal runs and an 8” return bend for # cross-®ve;y be-
tween end pipes of each run, but we await your reply as. to
the possibility of taking care of leaks with the arrangenient
as we. have it outlined. We will also have to have an ex. '
pression from you as to Which sample of the return bends -
stand up the best under test in order that we may arrange
to purchase the one which will best serve our purpose.

Att. Mr. F. B. Capen, Efficiency Kner.

Gentlemen :. |
Ba ae Referring to.vour inquiry of the 23rd ult. concerning a
“Jet Pump to handle oil at 400° -F., we would like some
additional information inorder fo arrive at a clearcunder
standing of vour problem. -

+2676 ie is DX7

Do you désire to supply oil wollen a pressure of 200 to
the Jet Eductor (yes) and entrain 75% of oil against a cer-

tain counter pressure, the value of which will depend on

whether the apparatus can be submerged in the iiquid to

be lifted or whether a suction lift has to be taken care df—

(yes).- We normally figure on obtaining a counter, pressure
equal to-one-fifth of the available pressure-of.the entrain-
ing liquid in which case, the volumes of pressure oil and
entrained oil are about equal. Kindly include in your re-

ply the specific weight (33 B) of. the oil to be handled and
| state whether the liquid to be entrained will also be at a

_tempetature of 400° F. (F. 600-700).

We shall be pleased upon receipt of same, to submit
recommendations for suitable equipment, and in the mean-
time, remain -

Port ates, — April 21, 1919.

- "Ref: W.J. H. Miller /FN.G./ 3/39/19

Mr. Miller,
- The Hancock Inspector Co. i.
119 W. 40th St., ;

New York City.

‘Dear Sir:

” As you suggested, I visited your: hslies at Boston; and .
had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Williston and Mr. Dobson
in respect to the Jet Pump. They advised me that. it would
be necessary to do some experimenting before any definite
statement, also that they were. not. equipped to exactly
duplicate our temperature conditions; and that it would be

‘better for them to do a little preliminary experimenting and
then make up an ejector and send us to trv out under actual’
working conditions. T assured them, that we would be

glad to cooperate with them in perfecting an ejector to
meet. our conditions; that we would’ test out the éjector
under working conditions and report results-back to: them
so that they could make changes and improvements in the
ejector. : a

“The proposition is to find out winthes an ejector can

_ do our work. T believe you understand our problem and,
with your experience in similar tvpes of apparatus, vou will
not have much difficulty in making an ejector suitable for

our purposes. ;

4575 The working conditions are as follows : .
(1) Motive power 16. bbls. oif per hour at 175 4 .
Gauge pressure @.300° F. |

. (2) Suction or pick up 8 bbls. -oil per hour at 100+.
- Gauge Pressure @ 600°F. .
@ (3), Discharge 24 bbls.. oil per hou? at 125 ie pres.

.

_ 2698 , CGE tec. - .

_ As your Boston office suggested, the jet, should be made
of steel so it can be connected to a 2” line at motive. power
end, a 3” Jine at the suction end, and a 2” line at the dis-
charge end. Also it would be advisable to make the body
of. the ejector so that different: sized inlet and discharge
tubes ean be placed:and replaced in the body of the ejector.
If these ejectors: work, we will require a dozen or more
now, but if they don’t work’we do not need any. For that
reason it will probably bé better for you to give us an
approximately idea of the initial cost and experimental
charge before going any farther. Mr, Williston gave nie
_the impression that this: would not be excessive and that
‘being the ease, we shall be very anxious for an.early reply
so we can get something started. a aaa

us for attention, as we regularly handle from this point all
business from your section of the country, intended for our |
eompany, we would state that our factory peo le have very
thoroughly goné aver the conditions outlined in your letter
and they suggest that as they are unable to rig up under»

these conditions to conduct a test, without involving a great |

deal of-expense, they recommend your purchasing one of —
our small Ejectors and testing it under the working condi- .
tions which vou have specified.. A small Ejector costs but
very little money and vou could ‘test it under: any. condi-

a change in either of the jets, this change could readily be

made, “After you have satisfied yourselves with regard to’

its working qualities, we could make an Ejector of Steel,
with tubes of steel or nickle, which would adequately meet

your, requirements and which w ould ‘give you the results’

which you are striving for.

We are sending you, under separate cover, copy of our |

is to say the air condensers of the 4 still battery should
- have four times as large air condensers as ga be |
' (3) There should be left space for two Ee aters to
each battery. One 3” preheater will probably heat the
charge but if the back trap is to be jetted through pre-
heater if will be necessary to have two 3” preheategt] ~— - >
(4) There are a great many. ways these stills be
operated and get fairls. good results; but if the best re-
sults are to be obtained these ‘stills must be operated so
as to maintain the desired cracking temperatures in every -
part of every still. There-are probably only two ways in
which this result can be anengtched depending ‘upon the
“handling of the back trap.

Method 1. | :
- (A) When the back trap is run directly from the heavy
air condenser to the still i. e. without running tlirough the
preheaer, the best method of operating would probably be
to preheat the charge 800-850° F and split the charge be-
tween stills 1, 2 & 3; draw tar from the bottom of still 4;
connect the stills at top as in present battery by 12” oil -
over-flow line and 12” vapor line; take the vapors off still
4: run the back trap down the vapor line; but to prevent.
the back trap from running into still 4 connect a back trap-
line. from vapor line next still to top of still.

The advantagés of this inethod (1)

(1) The temperature condition can be maintained in
all parts:of the still; for it cuts off the cooling effect of
the back trap on the bottom of the still. Lane

(2) Fuel economy. The back trap cools the hot vapors
coming directly from the still. ; -

(3)- The carbon formation is split up between stills 1,
2& 3 = ca |

The Disadvantages of method 1.

(1) Promotes the- formation of Kerosene and will re-
quire greater pressure to run,a given gravity products.
(2) Cuts.off agitation and mixing ‘of oil. in stills con-
sequently greater tendeney for carbon Tormation in bottom

of stills. : .

3600 Method 2.

; ‘ ,

When the back trap-is jetted by the charge through the
preheater, the best method of operating is to heat: the
charge and back trap 800-850 F and split the charge be-
tween stills 1, 2 and 3; draw tar from bottom of still 4;

-

‘a a“ +

“4

OT04 DX-711 (Excerpts from).

connect the stills at top as in present battery by 12” oil over

flow and 12” vapor line; take the vapors off still 4.

The advantages of method 2: .

(1) The temperature conditions can be maintained in’

all parts) of the stills.

(2) The back trap is blended with the charge and heated
to 850. The cracking-efthe back trap is promoted not:

only by its passage through the coil but also by the passage
up through the hot oil-in still -- - - |

(3) It-splits the carbon formation between stills 1,2 & 3
and prevents to a greater extent the deposit of heavy’ oil
and carkon in the bottoms of stills 1, 2 and 3. |. :
(4) Its an internal heating schéme and makes ‘possible
a lower furnace temperature.

Method 2 is in my. opinion. the best method of all; at’

present the jet pump has not been worked out. It-will re-
quire some experimenting with a 3” coil and jet pump
before it will be ready, for that reason it seemis to me it is

--advisalile to plan space in. the new equipment for two. 3”

prebeaters with, each battery of 4 stills, then when the jet
pump is developed it can be easily installed.

Pumping Oil at 80K) Degrees Fahr.
The: Texas Company,
Port Neches,

Attn. at eae let: :
Gentlemen: : .

‘Has ‘this problem ever come up for-your: solution—the
transferring of oil, asphaltum or tar from stills to-tanks
at temperatures from 400 ‘to 800 degrees Fahr.

The efforts of refiners today in obtaining a greater per-
centage of gasoline from eryde oil has in many instances
been blocked by their iniability to, secure suitable pumping
equipment for the handling of liquids at_ very high -tem-
peratures. Various makeshifts have been resorted | to, but,
in all instances, great difficulty has been encountered due
to the inability of any type of shaft or rod packing to with-
stand high temperatures. | : .
