Part IIL.A.1. The "Guys' Thing" is a Christian men's retreat held annually at

Tomales Bay outside Oakland, California. It began approximately 15 years ago. I

have been a featured Teacher at this event for a number of years even before I was

appointed to the position of Magistrate Judge on January 5, 2004. Iam typically

reimbursed for my expenses (e.g., airfare, meals and car rental). I teach

exclusively on the Old and New Testaments. The teaching is entirely Christian in

subject matter. For example, in November, 2012 I spoke on how to be a good

father. None of my teaching involves the law or the judicial system. Rather, my

teaching is the same as would occur in an adult Bible study in a Christian church.
